A data center module is AI-ready when it can deliver the selected AI platform’s power, remove its heat, sustain service during defined faults and maintenance, provide the required network and storage performance, and expand without redesigning the supporting plant. “AI-ready” is therefore a design outcome for a specific workload and rack platform—not a universal certification or a single rack-density number.
The practical test is evidence: a design basis, equipment compatibility records, calculations, commissioning results and operating procedures that show the module will work at the intended training, inference or mixed workload. A module advertised for a high rack wattage is not necessarily ready if its electrical paths, cooling loop, network fabric, controls or maintenance plan cannot support that load together.

Start with the workload and rack platform
AI infrastructure varies widely. A small inference cluster, a fine-tuning environment and a distributed training pod impose different demands on rack power, network traffic, storage throughput, cooling and failure recovery. Define the workload before choosing the module.
Specify the hardware envelope
- List the exact servers, accelerators, switches, storage systems and management equipment.
- State the rack layout, number of racks and planned cluster scale.
- Record sustained and peak IT load per rack and for the complete module, including networking and storage.
- Identify whether the workload is training, fine-tuning, inference, simulation or a mixed schedule.
- Set a growth allowance and state which capacity can be added without replacing upstream electrical or mechanical equipment.
For perspective, NVIDIA’s DGX GB200 SuperPOD reference describes an eight-rack scalable unit with a 1.2 MW TDP and a hybrid direct-liquid/air cooling approach. Those values describe that particular architecture; they are not a minimum specification for every AI facility.

Power and cooling must be designed as one envelope
Every watt delivered to AI hardware becomes heat that must be rejected. Electrical capacity without a matching cooling path is unusable, and a cooling system sized for average load may fail when accelerators, memory and networking reach peak demand simultaneously.
Use rack figures as platform-specific examples
NVIDIA’s DSX Facilities Infrastructure Design Guide v2.0, dated August 2026, gives example cabinet TDP values from 198 kW for MGX Gen 1.1 to 330 kW for Vera Rubin NVL72. These are reference-design values for the cited systems, not a universal “AI-ready” threshold. A vendor should state whether its headline number is IT load, cooling capacity, electrical equipment rating or a marketing maximum.
Select a cooling method that matches heat density
Uptime Institute’s February 2025 guidance provides useful practical ranges:
| Cooling approach | Typical guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Perimeter air cooling | Preferred for traditional low-density loads up to about 20–25 kW per rack | Actual limit depends on room airflow, containment, climate and hardware. |
| Close-coupled cooling | Typically supports up to about 50 kW per rack | Requires compatible in-row or rear-door equipment and careful airflow design. |
| Liquid cooling | Typically used above 50 kW per rack | Requires qualified servers, distribution units, piping, monitoring and procedures. |
| Total or near-total liquid cooling | Expected for rack powers approaching 150 kW or more | This is a practical guideline, not a guarantee for every deployment. |
Do not infer that a rack can accept liquid cooling merely because a module has a water connection. Confirm the exact server cold plates, coolant type, supply and return temperatures, flow, pressure drop, allowable chemistry and quick-disconnect specification.
Engineer the complete liquid-cooling loop
Direct-to-chip systems add a facility loop, coolant distribution units (CDUs), manifolds, isolation points, sensors and operational responsibilities. The rack connection is only one part of the system.

What a credible design package contains
- CDU capacity and redundancy, including pump curves and control logic.
- Technical-grade secondary-loop design serving the GPU cold plates.
- Supply and return temperatures, design flow, pressure limits and heat-rejection capacity.
- Leak detection, drip management, isolation valves and quick disconnects.
- Fluid-quality monitoring, filtration and a documented fill, drain and sampling procedure.
- Pipe routing, service clearances and a method to replace a CDU or isolate a rack without losing the rest of the cluster.
The DSX reference example places redundant CDU groups in a mechanical gallery using an N+1 group arrangement and cites a technical cooling system (TCS) design flow of at least 1.5 LPM/kW. That is a reference value for its pattern, not a universal requirement. The server manufacturer’s coolant specifications and the facility’s heat-rejection design must be validated together.
Define behavior during a power interruption
Cooling controls and pumps do not automatically inherit the IT system’s UPS protection. In the DSX example, the GPU cooling plant is not UPS-backed; thermal mass in the chilled-water loop carries the load until generator backup is available, after which the system auto-restarts. A different module may require UPS-backed pumps, an orderly workload shutdown or another sequence. Require a written sequence of operation for utility loss, generator start, pump failure, leak detection and automatic restart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify electrical capacity and resilience
Usable AI capacity is the power that reaches IT after redundancy assumptions and facility overhead—not the nameplate rating of a transformer or generator. Request a one-line diagram and load study that show every path from utility service to rack power supplies.
Questions for the electrical design
- How many independent utility, UPS, generator, switchboard and rack-distribution paths serve each rack?
- Can each rack maintain the server’s specified PSU input requirements during a planned maintenance event or a single defined failure?
- Are breaker coordination, short-circuit calculations, grounding, labeling and arc-flash documentation complete?
- How are load balancing, power quality, harmonic limits and power monitoring handled?
- What restoration steps follow a trip, and who is authorized to perform them?
- Is future capacity physically installed, reserved in switchgear, or merely allowed in a forecast?
Resilience is workload-specific. The GB200 reference calls for concurrent maintainability and no single point of failure for its design. A separate DGX H100 electrical guide describes three discrete rack power sources for fault tolerance in specified systems. Neither example proves that every cluster will survive every failure. Map the required failure scenarios to the actual server and cluster architecture.
Battery energy storage (BESS) may help with peak management, ride-through or generator transition, but the DSX reference treats sizing and application as case-specific rather than a default requirement. If a module relies on BESS, obtain its usable energy, duration, controls, fire protection, maintenance and black-start assumptions.

Build the network and storage fabric into the module
AI jobs can fail or slow when the compute is powerful but the interconnect or data pipeline is undersized. Readiness includes the scale-up and scale-out networks, storage, management traffic and physical pathways.

- Match switch models, port counts, link speeds, optics and cabling to the selected cluster topology.
- Verify bandwidth, latency, oversubscription and route diversity under full concurrent traffic.
- Provide separate or logically protected management networks.
- Reserve fiber pathways, meet-me spaces and cross-connect capacity for planned growth.
- Document testing at cluster scale, not only an isolated switch or server test.
Storage checks
- Measure throughput and latency for training data reads, checkpoint writes and restore operations.
- Confirm usable capacity after replication, erasure coding and filesystem overhead.
- Define the path from ingest systems to local cache, shared storage and backup.
- Test behavior when a storage path, controller or fabric link fails.
NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD architecture treats networking and storage as core elements rather than optional add-ons. A module that supplies power and cooling but cannot feed data to the accelerators is not operationally AI-ready.
Make modularity measurable
Prefabrication is valuable when interfaces, testing and expansion are explicit. NVIDIA’s MGX description identifies compute trays, switch trays, rack busbars, power shelves, cold plates, manifolds and quick disconnects as modular rack elements. Its technical blog claims approximately 80% factory pre-integration and deployment timelines reduced from 12 months to under 90 days. Those are NVIDIA’s claims for the MGX approach, not independently verified outcomes for every project.
Ask what “factory integrated” includes
- Which mechanical, electrical, controls and liquid assemblies are tested before shipment?
- Which connections, software configuration and validation remain on site?
- Are interface drawings, pinouts, pipe schedules, firmware versions and acceptance criteria supplied?
- Can another module connect without interrupting existing service?
- What shared-plant limit—chiller, generator, switchboard, CDU or network—will cap expansion?
- Are spare parts, technician clearances, lifting plans and operator training included?
A short quoted delivery schedule is meaningful only when its scope, site readiness, permitting assumptions and commissioning responsibilities are written into the contract.
Commission the module at real operating conditions
Component certification does not prove that a complete AI module works under simultaneous load. Commissioning should progress from documentation review to integrated systems testing.

A NEXTDC operator checklist asks whether a facility supports high-density racks “up to 600kW per rack,” offers rear-door, direct-to-chip or immersion cooling, and provides modular power provisioning and thermal zoning. These are useful procurement prompts from that operator, not independently validated universal specifications. A 600 kW prompt should not be compared directly with the 198–330 kW cabinet examples or Uptime Institute’s practical cooling ranges without checking what each number measures.
Include site, compliance and operating governance
Technical readiness can be defeated by an unsuitable site. Confirm utility availability, ambient design conditions, water restrictions, heat-rejection options, flood and wildfire exposure, permits, noise limits, seismic requirements and local electrical and building codes.
Procurement should also verify certifications, data-residency representations, connectivity availability and customer-specific sovereignty obligations. These are jurisdiction- and contract-dependent questions, not generic proof that a module is AI-ready.
Assign the facilities–IT boundary
- State who owns coolant quality, filters, CDUs, manifolds and leak response.
- Define who acknowledges alarms and who can isolate a rack or loop.
- Integrate power, cooling, network and compute telemetry into a common operations view where practical.
- Document preventive maintenance, spare inventory, vendor response times and escalation contacts.
- Train operators on normal states, bypasses, emergency shutdown and restart.
Common failure modes and corrective actions
“The module is rated for enough kilowatts.”
Problem: The rating may be a power-equipment nameplate or a theoretical cooling maximum. Correction: Demand sustained and peak IT capacity at the rack and hall, with redundancy and ambient assumptions attached.

Problem: Cold-plate geometry, coolant chemistry, pressure and flow can differ by platform. Correction: Require a qualified hardware list and a complete CDU, pipework and monitoring design.
Best Value
“Tier or redundancy labels guarantee cluster availability.”
Problem: Facility labels do not describe every server, network or software failure mode. Correction: Test the failure scenarios required by the workload and document recovery time and data-protection behavior.
“Factory pre-integration eliminates commissioning.”
Problem: Site utilities, controls, network routes and operating procedures still need integrated testing. Correction: Keep a witnessed commissioning plan and workload-level acceptance test.
“Expansion is possible because floor space remains.”
Problem: Shared chillers, generators, switchgear, CDUs or fiber pathways may be the real limit. Correction: Obtain an expansion model showing when each shared system reaches its limit and what work is required.
A procurement checklist for an AI-ready module
- Exact compute, network and storage bill of materials approved.
- Sustained and peak IT loads calculated per rack and for the module.
- Cooling method matched to each rack, with qualified hardware and coolant data.
- CDU capacity, redundancy, flow, pressure, heat rejection and leak response documented.
- Independent power paths, maintenance states and restoration sequences demonstrated.
- Network topology, storage performance and route diversity validated under concurrent workload.
- Expansion capacity and shared-plant constraints quantified.
- Factory integration scope, site work and acceptance tests written into the contract.
- Facilities/IT ownership, monitoring, spares, access and training agreed.
- Permits, code compliance, climate, water, security, sovereignty and connectivity checked for the actual site.
Bottom line
A data center module earns the AI-ready description only when its defined workload can run at the required scale with coordinated power, cooling, connectivity, controls and service procedures. Use published rack and cabinet figures as architecture-specific examples, not universal thresholds. The strongest buying decision is the one supported by a design basis, qualified interfaces, integrated fault testing and a credible expansion and operations plan.
