The test is comparative, not absolute: define the format, role, opposition, conditions and expected output, then measure how much the player adds above an appropriate average or replacement-level baseline.
Runs, wickets, averages and strike rates remain useful evidence. They become misleading when treated as complete valuations. Context-aware ratings, expected-run models, replacement-level measures and (for financial claims) market prices can reveal value that a conventional scorecard misses.

Undervaluation is a comparison, not a permanent label
Calling a player “undervalued” should answer two separate questions. First, does the player contribute more to winning matches than the standard statistics suggest? Second, is that contribution cheaper or less recognized than comparable contribution in the same competition and period? A player can be statistically valuable without being financially underpriced, and a player with an attractive contract can still be under-recognized by a simple average.

A career average across formats can therefore conceal the exact role in which a player creates value. Comparisons should use the same format and period, similar batting position or bowling phase, comparable opportunities, and an explicit benchmark such as league average, role average, expected output or replacement level.

Why raw scorecard numbers miss impact
Totals ignore opportunity and difficulty
A batter who faces the new ball on a difficult surface may score fewer runs than a middle-order player entering an easy chase. The totals are not measuring the same task. Likewise, a bowler used mainly in power-play overs may concede more runs than a specialist who bowls defensive overs, even when the first bowler creates more pressure and dismissals against top batters.
Averages hide match state
The same 40 runs can have very different value. Runs made while a team is rebuilding after early wickets, protecting a narrow total, or attacking a high required rate should be evaluated against the runs expected in that state. A dismissal can also be more valuable when it removes a set batter or breaks a partnership than when it ends a low-impact innings.
Scoring conditions change the meaning of output
On a high-scoring ground, runs are easier to obtain and preventing them is harder. On a low-scoring surface, a modest total or economical spell may be decisive. The ICC explains that its ratings reduce the credit attached to runs when scoring is easier and increase it when runs are at a premium, using programmed calculations based on scorecard information and match circumstances (ICC rankings methodology).

A defensible assessment records the following variables before comparing players:

- Format and competition: Test, one-day international, domestic one-day cricket and Twenty20 have different scoring patterns and replacement pools.
- Role and opportunity: batting position, innings phase, bowling phase, overs available, and whether the player regularly fields in a specialist position.
- Opposition: quality of the bowlers or batters faced, not just the player’s aggregate totals.
- Conditions: venue, pitch, weather, boundary dimensions and innings scoring environment.
- Match state: target, wickets in hand, required rate, pressure and whether the player’s actions changed the expected result.
- Baseline: league or role average, expected performance for that state, or a replacement-level player who could realistically fill the role.
- Observation window: a defined season, tournament or career segment, with enough opportunities to avoid treating a short hot streak as a stable skill.
Without this frame, a statistic can be precise but answer the wrong question. A T20 impact score should not be placed on the same scale as a Test career batting average.
Batting measures that reveal hidden value
Pair runs with dismissal and scoring context
Runs should be read alongside dismissals, balls faced, scoring rate and the state of the innings. A batter who scores at a moderate rate while preserving wickets in a difficult chase may be more useful than a player with a higher strike rate accumulated after the result is nearly settled. Conversely, a high average built from not-outs can look stronger than the batter’s actual contribution if the player regularly arrives when little risk is required.
Use expected runs or a role baseline
Estimate the runs an average player in the same situation would be expected to produce, then compare the observed result with that expectation. The difference is more informative than the raw total because it credits difficulty and opportunity. The expectation must be specified: a league average, a role-specific average or a model based on ball-by-ball match state will produce different answers.

Twenty20 expected run differential
Davis, Perera and Swartz’s peer-reviewed 2015 work on Twenty20 evaluation proposes “expected run differential”: additional runs contributed against a standard player. Their measures did not correlate highly with conventional batting average, strike rate, bowling average, economy rate and ICC ratings. That finding supports using the measures together, not discarding traditional statistics; each captures a different part of performance (Player evaluation in Twenty20 cricket).

Bowling value is more than wickets and economy
Separate wicket-taking from run prevention
Wickets and runs conceded describe different skills. A bowler may be valuable through breakthroughs even with an ordinary economy rate, or through sustained run prevention despite taking few wickets. Evaluate both against the phase in which the overs were bowled and the quality of batters faced.
Account for role difficulty
Power-play bowlers face fielding restrictions and new-ball aggression; death bowlers operate when batters can attack with wickets in hand. Comparing their economy rates without adjusting for phase can label a difficult assignment as poor performance. A role-aware baseline asks what an average bowler would concede and how often that bowler would take wickets in the same circumstances.
Value the event, not only the final figures
Ball-by-ball models can estimate how a delivery changes expected runs. A dot ball that prevents a boundary opportunity, a wicket that ends a dangerous partnership and a boundary conceded after a batter is already set can carry different values even when they produce similar over-level figures.
All-rounders and the fielding blind spot
For an all-rounder, calculate batting and bowling contributions separately before combining them. Otherwise, one strong discipline can hide a weakness in the other, or a small sample in one skill can dominate the total. The ICC’s all-rounder explanation describes an index that combines batting and bowling points, then explicitly cautions: “Incidentally, this index does omit one important all-rounder skill, namely fielding” (ICC, “How do you rate all-rounders?”).

Fielding should therefore be added when reliable evidence exists: run-saving stops, catches, run-outs, positioning and the difficulty of chances. Public data is less consistent for fielding than for runs or wickets, so report the coverage and avoid pretending that an index including only batting and bowling is a complete all-round valuation.
What established rating and valuation frameworks actually measure

The ICC also provides a comparison interface organized around format, role, batting, bowling, fielding and career statistics. It is a practical starting point for like-for-like checks, not evidence that those categories capture every aspect of value (ICC Player Comparison).

“Above average” and “above replacement” answer different questions. Average compares a player with the typical player in a selected population. Replacement level asks what a team could obtain from an available substitute who could realistically perform the role. A reserve-level player may be below the league average, so a modest-looking contribution can still be highly valuable if suitable replacements are scarce.
Wins-above-replacement models translate expected-run changes into an estimated effect on winning. That translation is useful for team building, but it is model output rather than a directly observed fact. Check how the model defines replacement, which competitions and seasons supply data, how missing fielding is treated, and whether the run-to-win conversion fits the format.

Performance undervaluation versus financial undervaluation
A player is performance-undervalued when common statistics fail to reflect contribution. A player is financially undervalued only when the estimated contribution exceeds the compensation or auction cost of comparable options in the same market and time period. The second claim requires contract or auction prices, roster rules, salary constraints and an appropriate valuation model.
The IIM Bangalore record on “Measuring the values of cricket players” describes a technique for franchise worth and illustrates it with IPL players. That distinction matters: a high impact score can establish sporting contribution, but it does not by itself establish a bargain price.
A practical workflow for evaluating one player
- Define the question. Decide whether you are measuring match impact, role quality, selection value or financial cost. Do not mix these conclusions.
- Fix the sample. Select one format, competition and period. Record matches, innings, balls or overs so opportunity is visible.
- Match the role. Compare openers with openers, finishers with finishers, and power-play or death bowlers with the same assignments.
- Collect component data. For batting, include runs, dismissals, balls, scoring rate and innings state. For bowling, include wickets, runs conceded, overs, phase and batter quality. Add fielding where data is dependable.
- Adjust for context. Include opposition strength, venue and scoring environment. ICC’s methodology is an example of incorporating these circumstances rather than treating every run identically (ICC methodology).
- Choose and publish the baseline. State whether the comparison is against league average, role average, expected output or replacement level.
- Inspect uncertainty. Flag small samples, missing fielding records, changing roles and competitions with incomplete ball-by-ball data.
- Only then discuss price. For a market claim, compare the performance estimate with actual salary or auction cost from the same market and period.
Common mistakes that create false undervaluation claims
- Comparing formats directly: a Test average and a T20 impact score are not interchangeable scales.
- Using career totals for a changed role: a player may have moved from opener to finisher or from middle overs to the death.
- Ignoring not-outs and opportunity: averages can rise when a batter has fewer dismissals, while a part-time bowler may have too few overs for a stable rate.
- Rewarding volume over difficulty: more deliveries faced or overs bowled can reflect opportunity rather than superior performance.
- Combining skills too early: an all-round total can hide whether the player is genuinely above baseline in either discipline.
- Treating a model as an objective fact: expected runs and wins above replacement depend on definitions, training data and conversion assumptions.
- Calling performance cheap without a price: “undervalued” in the financial sense requires market compensation evidence.
How to report the conclusion responsibly
A strong assessment should state the player’s role, sample, comparison group, baseline, context adjustments, included skills and major data gaps. Prefer wording such as “above the role-adjusted Twenty20 baseline in this period” over an unqualified claim that a player is universally underrated. If fielding is omitted, say so. If the sample covers one tournament, do not generalize it to a career. If the result comes from a model, identify the model family and its assumptions.

Statistical undervaluation appears when a player’s context-adjusted contribution exceeds what conventional totals imply relative to a defined role and baseline. The most reliable approach combines component statistics, match state, opposition, conditions and replacement or expected output, then treats market price as a separate question. No single rating proves value in every format; the comparison frame determines whether the label is justified.
