A remaster, meanwhile, is not automatically the same game with sharper graphics: one project may preserve every core rule while modernizing audio and online services, while another may revise presentation, matchmaking, balance, or user-created content.
The safest way to judge any remaster is to compare the original and new release across six areas: visuals, audio, gameplay and balance, story and other content, online and social systems, and access to the original presentation or client.

“Classic” is a judgment, not a Blizzard product category
There is no universal Blizzard checklist, award or technical format that turns a game into a classic. The word is an editorial judgment about whether a game’s identity and influence remain legible after years have passed. A useful test asks four questions.

Do people continue to play it?
Enduring play is stronger evidence than launch excitement. Players may return through an original client, a rerelease, organized competition, local events or an active modding community. Continued play does not require a game to have the largest current audience; it shows that its systems still give people a reason to come back.

Did it shape or represent its genre?
A classic either changes what later games attempt or becomes an especially clear example of a genre at its best. Real-time strategy games that followed StarCraft had to contend with its approach to asymmetric factions, readable unit design, campaign storytelling and competitive play. Influence can be direct imitation, a design conversation or a lasting reference point for players and developers.
Is its creative identity still recognizable?
Art direction, sound, setting, interface language and mechanical rhythm can remain distinctive even when technology ages. A game may look dated by current rendering standards yet still be immediately identifiable from a few units, musical cues, environments or interface decisions. That recognizability is part of what a remaster must handle carefully.
Does a community or culture persist around it?
Communities preserve knowledge: build orders, tactics, maps, speed-running routes, fan art, tournaments and shared memories. Their persistence helps explain why a game matters beyond its original sales window. It is evidence of cultural reach, not a guarantee that every service or online feature is still available.

These signs overlap. A game can have a memorable art style but little influence, or strong influence without a large present-day community. Calling it a classic is therefore a reasoned conclusion from several kinds of evidence, not a measurable status.
Why StarCraft is a useful example
Blizzard’s retrospective describes StarCraft as a landmark real-time strategy game and a fixture of global esports. Nineteen years after its release, the retrospective said the game remained popular around the world, particularly in South Korea, where it was shown on cable television and played live before thousands of fans. That is a dated observation from the retrospective, not a current audience measurement, but it illustrates the kind of long-term visibility associated with a classic.

The same account connects the game’s identity to deliberate creative choices and technical constraints. Limitations on the hardware and production environment did not erase its personality; they helped shape a readable visual language and a coherent science-fiction world. A classic is not necessarily a game that was technologically unrestricted. Sometimes the constraints produce choices that players remember long after the underlying hardware has become obsolete.
The retrospective also includes technical director Bob Fitch recalling that the team hoped to sell 100,000 copies and that the game “turned out to be in the millions.” This is an attributed recollection in an official Blizzard retrospective, not an audited sales figure. It is useful as context for the game’s unexpected reach, not as a precise market statistic.

The stronger evidence is the combination of lasting play, genre significance, recognizable design and community culture.
What a remaster actually changes
“Remaster” describes a revision of an existing release, but the scope is not standardized. Before deciding whether a remaster preserves the original, inspect each of these dimensions separately.
Visual presentation
Changes can range from higher-resolution artwork and modern display support to newly modeled characters, environments, effects, cinematics or interface layouts. A visual overhaul can make a game easier to read on current screens, but it can also alter silhouettes, color contrast or animation timing in ways that affect how veterans perceive it.

Audio
A remaster may replace or re-record music, effects and dialogue, or it may deliver cleaner versions of the original assets. Audio affects atmosphere and feedback: a changed sound can make a familiar action feel different even when its underlying rule is untouched.

Gameplay and balance
This is the dividing line between a presentation-focused remaster and a broader revision. Preserving gameplay and balance means the rules, unit values, timing and competitive interactions are intended to remain the same. Rebalancing changes the practical game, even if the campaign and setting are familiar. Patch histories and current service updates may also matter, because an announcement describes intended scope at a particular moment rather than guaranteeing every future state.
Story, campaign and other content
Remasters may restore missing material, revise cinematics, add illustrations or include expansions that were sold separately. A release that gathers an original campaign and its expansion is a larger preservation package than one that only replaces textures. New cinematics or rewritten presentation can also change how the story is experienced without changing mission objectives.
Online, matchmaking and social systems
Modern authentication, ranked ladders, matchmaking, cloud saves, friends lists and social interfaces can make an old game practical on current networks. These services are also dependent on servers and policy, so an announcement should be read as a description of the planned or launched feature set, not a permanent service guarantee.
Access to the original look or client
Some projects keep the original presentation available, allowing a direct comparison. Others replace the old client or provide only a new rendering mode. The distinction matters to preservation: being able to switch graphics in the same match is different from maintaining a separate, historically accurate executable.

StarCraft: Remastered: conservative rules, modern access
In its March 27, 2017 announcement, Blizzard described StarCraft: Remastered as a full graphical overhaul of StarCraft and Brood War. The announcement said the project would modernize graphics and audio, update online support, add cloud saving and improve campaign illustrations while preserving gameplay and balance.
That combination makes it a relatively conservative remaster in its core rules. A player seeking the original competitive interactions would expect the rules and balance to remain the anchor, while a player using contemporary hardware would gain updated presentation and service features. The distinction is important: “preserved gameplay” does not mean “nothing changed.” It means the announced changes were concentrated around presentation and access rather than the game’s fundamental balance.
Morhaime summarized the goal at the time: “With StarCraft: Remastered, we’re modernizing the original game’s visuals, audio, and online support to ensure that players can enjoy StarCraft for another 20 years and beyond.” That quote describes the 2017 modernization objective. It should not be treated as an independent audit of every current feature.
Warcraft III: Reforged: a wider announced scope
Blizzard announced Warcraft III: Reforged as a recreation of Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne with revitalized visuals. The announcement also listed a campaign of more than 60 missions, rebalanced online play, social and matchmaking features, and player-created games.
That announced scope goes beyond a graphics pass. Rebalancing online play can affect competitive interactions; matchmaking and social systems change how players find one another; and player-created games expand the ways the community uses the platform. The campaign and expansion package also make the release a broad recreation of the Warcraft III experience rather than a single visual layer applied to one original build.

Keep the wording tied to what Blizzard announced. The announcement establishes intended features and scope at release, not a claim that every feature met every player’s expectations or remained unchanged over time. A careful comparison separates the promise, the delivered version and the present service state.

Blizzard announced Warcraft I and Warcraft II Remastered in 2024 and said players could switch between original and remastered graphics in real time. This is a particularly clear preservation model because the comparison happens inside the game rather than through separate screenshots or an old installation.
A real-time toggle does not prove that every underlying system is identical; it answers a narrower question about visual presentation. It lets players see what the remaster changed, retain the original visual reference and identify whether a perceived difference comes from artwork rather than from a rule change.

Is a remaster the same game?
There is no single yes-or-no answer. If the rules and balance are preserved, as Blizzard said for StarCraft: Remastered, the competitive core can remain the same while graphics, audio, saving and online access change substantially. If a project includes rebalancing, redesigned online play or expanded user-created content, it is the same historical property presented through a meaningfully revised product.
Use “same game” for the dimension you actually mean. A remaster may preserve the same campaign missions but use different cinematics; preserve the same unit rules but add modern matchmaking; or preserve the same visual option while changing network services. Precision prevents an argument about labels from obscuring the changes that affect play.
A practical checklist for comparing any Blizzard remaster
- Identify the baseline. Record which original release, expansion and regional edition the remaster contains.
- Check the rules. Look for an explicit statement about gameplay, balance, unit values, mission objectives and control behavior.
- Separate presentation from systems. List visual, audio, interface and cinematic changes independently from matchmaking, social tools and saving.
- Check content coverage. Confirm whether expansions, campaigns, maps, cinematics and player-created modes are included.
- Test preservation access. Determine whether original graphics can be toggled in real time, selected as a mode or accessed only through a separate client.
- Date the evidence. Mark whether each claim comes from an announcement, a later patch note or the current service description. An announcement is not a perpetual guarantee.
- Decide what matters to you. Competitive players may prioritize unchanged balance; historians may prioritize original visuals and audio; new players may value readable art, cloud saves and matchmaking.
The bottom line for judging “classic” status
Call a Blizzard game a classic when its identity, influence and community remain visible after its original technical moment has passed. StarCraft illustrates that case through long-running play, genre importance, esports visibility and a distinctive design language shaped by both creative intent and constraints.
Judge a remaster on its change list, not its label. StarCraft: Remastered was presented as modernized presentation and online access around preserved gameplay and balance. Warcraft III: Reforged was presented as a broader recreation with revitalized visuals, online rebalancing, social and matchmaking systems and player-created games. Warcraft I and II Remastered demonstrate another useful choice: letting players switch between original and remastered graphics directly. Those differences are why the original release and the remaster should be compared feature by feature.
