What Lunar Faults Are and How They Form on the Moon

Lunar faults are fractures or fractured zones in the Moon’s crust where blocks of rock have moved. Most of the youngest examples are low-angle thrust faults. As the Moon’s still-hot interior cools and contracts, its brittle outer crust is squeezed; one block is pushed up and over another, leaving a curved, stair-step cliff called a lobate scarp. Earth’s tides add changing stresses that help organize fault directions and may trigger some shallow moonquakes.

What are lunar faults?

A fault is the break—or zone of breaks—along which crustal blocks have slipped relative to each other. The fault itself is a subsurface structure. A scarp is the topographic step that movement produces at the surface. Keeping those terms separate matters: spacecraft images show the scarp directly, while the geometry of the landform lets geologists infer the hidden fault and the direction of slip.

On the Moon, the clearest young faults are lobate thrust faults. “Thrust” describes compressional movement: the upper block rides up and over the lower block along a relatively shallow fault plane. “Lobate” refers to the rounded, tongue-like planform of the resulting scarp. From orbit, a scarp commonly appears as a curved, asymmetric ridge with a steep face on one side and a gentler slope on the other. In a low-sun image, the long shadow can make the relief especially obvious.

These structures are tectonic landforms, not merely impact-rim fragments. An impact can modify or bury a fault, but a continuous, sinuous step that cuts across older terrain and shows consistent displacement is evidence for crustal shortening. Faults can occur in both the lunar highlands and volcanic maria, although their surface expression and age relationships depend on the local rocks.

How do faults form on the Moon?

The basic mechanism is global contraction, expressed through a sequence that links the Moon’s thermal history to a visible cliff.

  1. Early heating. The young Moon was heated by accretion, large impacts and radioactive decay. Much of its interior remained hot enough to deform or partially melt.
  2. Long-term cooling. Since formation, the interior has lost heat to space. Cooling causes the interior to occupy slightly less volume as materials solidify and contract.
  3. Planet-wide shortening. The reduction in interior volume puts the outer shell into compression. The process is gradual on human timescales but acts across the whole Moon.
  4. Failure of the brittle crust. Near the surface, cold rock cannot shorten smoothly. Stress accumulates until a fracture develops at a favorable angle.
  5. Thrust motion. One crustal block moves up and over its neighbor. Repeated or cumulative slip folds and breaks the surface, building a curved, stair-step scarp.
  6. Seismic release and slope response. If a locked section slips suddenly, stored elastic energy travels through the ground as a moonquake. Shaking can also destabilize loose regolith on the scarp’s slopes.

Earth’s solid-body tides impose an additional, changing stress field. The tidal contribution is small compared with the Moon’s overall contraction, but it can favor certain fault orientations and help determine when a pre-stressed fault slips. That combination—slow thermal contraction plus periodic tidal stressing—explains why scarps are not randomly oriented and why some shallow seismic events correlate with particular parts of the lunar day.

Is the Moon still shrinking?

Yes. NASA reported in 2019 that the Moon’s diameter has decreased by about 150 feet (50 meters) over the last several hundred million years. That is a cumulative change, not a yearly shrinkage rate, and it should not be converted into a precise present-day slip rate for any individual fault. The contraction is nevertheless large enough to keep generating compressive strain in the brittle crust.

Evidence for geologically recent contraction comes from the distribution and freshness of lobate scarps. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) imagery expanded the inventory from the limited regions photographed during Apollo to a global catalog of more than 3,200 lobate thrust-fault scarps (NASA, 2015). Their crisp relief and limited crater degradation indicate that many formed relatively recently in lunar geologic terms. “Recent” here means young compared with the Moon’s total history; the available evidence does not assign one exact age to every scarp.

NASA senior scientist Thomas Watters summarized the activity evidence in 2019: “Our analysis gives the first evidence that these faults are still active and likely producing moonquakes today as the Moon continues to gradually cool and shrink.” The statement describes a population-level interpretation. It does not mean that every mapped scarp is slipping now or that scientists have measured a single universal rate of motion.

What is a lobate scarp?

A lobate scarp is the visible surface step made by a young contractional thrust fault. It is usually:

  • Curved in plan view: the scarp traces a lobe or arc rather than a perfectly straight line.
  • Asymmetric in profile: one side is relatively steep, while the displaced block forms a broader, gentler rise on the other side.
  • Low-angle at depth: the underlying thrust commonly dips only modestly beneath the surface.
  • Young-looking: its sharp crest and subdued crater damage contrast with heavily battered ancient terrain.

The Lee–Lincoln scarp in Taurus–Littrow Valley is a well-known example. NASA describes it as an approximately 80-meter-high, relatively young, low-angle thrust fault near the Apollo 17 landing site. Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt drove the lunar rover over it in a zig-zag route, crossing the uneven ground rather than attempting a direct ascent of the steepest face. The feature demonstrates why a scarp is a landscape expression of a fault: the cliff is what visitors would see, while the low-angle slip surface lies beneath it.

Not every curved ridge is a lobate scarp. Image lighting, ejecta deposits and degraded crater rims can mimic a fault step. Geologists look for consistent relief, displacement of recognizable layers or landforms, cross-cutting relations and a geometry compatible with thrusting before classifying a feature as tectonic.

What causes moonquakes?

A moonquake is seismic shaking produced by a sudden release of stress inside the Moon. Apollo seismometers operated from 1969 through 1977 and recorded thousands of events. The network detected several kinds of seismic signals, including shallow events that are especially relevant to active faults. Analyses associate some of those shallow quakes with nearby young scarps and find timing consistent with tidal stressing.

The physical sequence is comparable to an earthquake, but the setting differs:

  1. Contraction and other forces load a fault over long periods.
  2. Friction holds the blocks temporarily, allowing elastic strain to build.
  3. When the applied stress exceeds resistance, a section slips.
  4. The rupture radiates seismic waves through the Moon and shakes the surface.

Because lunar soil is dry, fractured and largely unweathered, seismic energy can persist and reverberate differently than it does in Earth’s water-rich crust. A shallow event near a scarp can also loosen boulders or destabilize steep regolith, creating a hazard for future surface operations. The Apollo data support a tectonically active Moon, but they do not provide a simple one-to-one identification for every event. Event locations have uncertainties, and assigning a particular quake to a particular fault depends on models of the interior and the local structure.

How do lobate scarps differ from wrinkle ridges and graben?

Lunar tectonic landforms record both compression and extension. Their appearance alone is not enough; stress regime, setting and cross-cutting relationships must be considered.

Landform Stress regime Typical geometry Common setting What the surface shows
Lobate scarp Compression Curved, asymmetric step or cliff Highlands and maria Young-looking thrust-fault relief where one block moved up and over another
Wrinkle ridge Usually interpreted as compression, but structural details remain debated Broad, sinuous ridge with multiple slopes Solidified mare basalt Possible folds and thrusts; alternative interpretations exist
Graben Extension Elongated trough bounded by faults For example, volcanic plains such as Mare Frigoris A down-dropped block between roughly parallel normal faults

Wrinkle ridges are not simply oversized lobate scarps. A USGS analysis of the Apollo 17 region discusses anticlines and thrust faults as possible explanations but notes competing structural interpretations. Their broad shape and mare-basalt setting differ from the sharper, more discrete step commonly produced by a lobate scarp.

Graben record the opposite stress regime. Extension pulls the crust apart, allowing a central block to drop between normal faults and leaving a trough. NASA groups graben with other tectonic features in Mare Frigoris. A map that contains both scarps and graben therefore records more than one stress state, either at different times or in different local settings.

How do scientists determine a lunar fault’s age and activity?

Crater degradation

Fresh craters have sharp rims and recognizable ejecta. Micrometeorite bombardment gradually softens those forms. A scarp that cuts a relatively fresh crater is younger than that crater; a crater superposed on the scarp is younger than the faulting. This method yields relative ages, not an exact date for each displacement event.

Cross-cutting relationships

When one landform interrupts another, the interrupter is younger. A scarp that offsets a wrinkle ridge, lava boundary or crater rim provides a sequence of events. Multiple cross-cutting observations can establish a regional chronology even when no absolute age is available.

Orbital imaging

LRO’s high-resolution camera provides the coverage needed to identify small scarps globally, measure their continuity and inspect boulder tracks or fresh-looking slopes. The result is a much larger sample than Apollo photographs alone could supply. Imaging demonstrates morphology and relative youth; it does not by itself measure current millimeter-scale slip.

Seismic association

A shallow Apollo event located near a young scarp is stronger evidence for present tectonic activity than morphology alone. Researchers compare estimated event locations with mapped scarps and test whether the timing fits changing tidal stresses. Both location errors and assumptions about the Moon’s interior limit the certainty of individual assignments.

Why are lunar faults not randomly oriented?

A purely local process would produce a more scattered pattern. The Moon’s global contraction supplies a broad compressive component, while Earth’s tides add stresses that vary as the Moon moves through its orbit. Faults are most likely to slip when the combined stress on their particular orientation is favorable. This does not mean tides create every fault; contraction provides the long-term shortening, and tides help organize orientations and trigger some episodes of slip.

Local factors still matter. Pre-existing fractures, variations in crustal thickness, buried impact structures and the mechanical contrast between highland rock and mare basalt can divert or terminate a scarp. Consequently, two scarps formed under the same global contraction can have different lengths, heights and apparent ages.

What does a lunar fault look like in spacecraft images?

Look for a laterally continuous, curved step with a steep shadow-facing wall and a smoother back slope. Stereo images or photographs taken under different Sun angles help separate real relief from albedo boundaries. A likely scarp may truncate small craters, offset ridges or show a line of disturbed blocks at its base.

  • Check the context: Is the feature crossing mare basalt, highland terrain or an impact deposit?
  • Check continuity: Does the line persist for kilometers, or does it resolve into isolated boulders and crater rims?
  • Check relative age: Are craters on the scarp less degraded than nearby craters, and does the scarp cut older features?
  • Check the stress sense: A raised block and compressed, overlapping relief suggest thrusting; a depressed trough suggests extension.

These observations support a geological interpretation, but definitive mapping combines image measurements, topography and, where available, seismic constraints.

What remains uncertain about lunar faults?

The broad conclusion is secure: the Moon cooled, contracted and developed compressional faults, and some of those faults are geologically young. The uncertainties concern details. Scientists do not have a precise present-day slip rate for every scarp, an exact age for every mapped feature or a definitive fault assignment for every Apollo seismic event. A scarp’s apparent freshness can also reflect local resurfacing or lighting, so age estimates must use multiple clues.

Interpretations of wrinkle ridges are less settled than interpretations of classic lobate scarps. Likewise, a correlation between a shallow moonquake and a nearby scarp is persuasive but not equivalent to watching the fault rupture at the surface. Future seismometers, repeat topography and higher-resolution monitoring could narrow those uncertainties.

Why lunar faults matter for exploration

Active contraction changes the risk map for landing sites, traverses and long-lived instruments. A young scarp can mark steep terrain, unstable regolith and blocks that may be shaken by a shallow quake. Mapping faults also reveals where the crust is mechanically weak and where future seismic stations could provide the greatest scientific return. For mission planners, the practical lesson is not that every scarp is about to move, but that tectonic relief and seismic activity must be included alongside impact hazards and slopes in site assessments.

Bottom line

Lunar faults are moving fractures in a crust that is still cooling and contracting. The most recognizable expression is a lobate scarp—a curved, stair-step cliff created when one block thrusts over another. More than 3,200 such scarps have been mapped, the Moon has contracted by roughly 150 feet (50 meters) over several hundred million years, and Apollo seismic records show that shallow tectonic shaking can still occur. Those facts make the Moon a slowly shrinking, internally active world rather than a geologically dead body.
