A Lucky Locator is a single-use Extraction Gizmo in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3. Activate it from the Pickaxe/Gizmo wheel and it marks a buried Sprite Chest guaranteed to contain a Sprite you have not collected. It does not let you select the exact Sprite or guarantee a rarity.
The best time to spend one is after normal hunting starts producing duplicates, provided you have enough equipment and a safe way to extract the Sprite before another player, the Storm, or the season timer removes the opportunity.

What the Lucky Locator actually does
When activated, the Lucky Locator creates a map objective for a buried Sprite Chest. The chest is guaranteed to contain a Sprite missing from your collection. Epic described the mechanic on July 30, 2026, as: “The Lucky Locator Gizmo guarantees a Chest containing a Sprite you haven’t collected yet.” The v41.30 notes use the same guarantee and identify the item as a new Gizmo unlocked through Sprite Mastery.

If several Sprites remain uncollected, the game does not promise a particular named entry, the rarest entry, or the one you personally want. The result is simply a Sprite that is not already registered in your collection when the chest is generated.

It is a consumable Extraction Gizmo
Lucky Locators are consumed when activated. They are accessed through the Pickaxe slot rather than the normal weapon inventory, and the activation control depends on your platform. After activation, you must still reach, uncover if necessary, open, equip, and extract the Sprite. The Locator does not automatically deliver the item to your collection.
What happens to the Gizmo after the season
Extraction Gizmos are seasonal items. Epic Support says they can be earned from Bonus Goals quests, Sprite Dust trades, and Sprite Mastery progression; they cannot be traded or dropped when you are eliminated; and they remain available during the season before expiring when that season ends. The Lucky Locator notes specifically apply that expiration to Chapter 7 Season 3 Gizmos.
How to get a Lucky Locator
The confirmed acquisition route is the Sprite Mastery progression track. The currently documented reward screen shows one Lucky Locator for an account at mastery level 50, reached by mastering 50 different Sprites. That level and quantity are patch-sensitive rather than a permanent promise: Epic confirms the progression-track source and says more Lucky Locators are on the way, but it has not published a universal reward schedule that should be assumed for every future update.

What mastery level 50 means
Mastery levels are tied to the number of different Sprites you have mastered, not to duplicate pickups of the same Sprite. If your account has not reached the displayed threshold, continue collecting and mastering distinct Sprites. The reward is account progression, not an item that another player can hand to you.
Other Gizmo sources
Epic lists Bonus Goals quests and Sprite Dust trades as general ways to earn Extraction Gizmos. Those sources do not establish that every one of them awards a Lucky Locator specifically. Check the current in-game reward panel for the exact item before planning around a quest or trade.

When you should use one
A Lucky Locator has the most value when ordinary Sprite hunting is no longer efficient. If repeated chests are giving you duplicates and only a few collection entries remain, the guaranteed-new result removes much of that uncertainty.
Use it for a stubborn collection gap
Spend it when a missing Sprite has become difficult to find naturally, when you are repeatedly searching the same locations without progress, or when completing the collection matters more than preserving the consumable. The Locator does not identify the missing entry in advance, so inspect your collection first and understand which gaps are still open.
Wait until you can defend the objective
Activation is risky if you are under-equipped. Gather weapons, shields, healing, and mobility first. A marked chest can attract opponents, and an elimination before extraction can waste both the opportunity and the time spent reaching it.
Do not wait past the expiration timer
Holding a Locator for a theoretical perfect match is not useful if Chapter 7 Season 3 ends first. Check the season countdown and plan a final use while the item is still valid. The in-game expiration timer is the practical deadline for this inventory.
Preparation checklist before activation
Use this checklist before consuming the Gizmo:
- Collection: Open your Sprite collection and confirm that a meaningful gap remains.
- Position: Move to a relatively quiet area inside the current safe zone, rather than activating in a crowded point of interest.
- Equipment: Carry a serviceable weapon loadout, shields, healing, and at least one mobility option.
- Storm timing: Leave enough time to reach the chest and extraction point before the next circle forces a rotation.
- Extraction plan: Identify a safe Extraction Site or carry a Portable Extractor before spending the Locator.
- Team coordination: In a squad, tell teammates who will watch the approach, who will uncover the chest, and who will carry the Sprite.
How to activate and claim the Sprite
- Enter Battle Royale or Zero Build and rotate to a quieter location within the safe zone.
- Loot until you have weapons, shields, mobility, and enough healing to survive a fight or a long rotation.
- Equip your Pickaxe. Extraction Gizmos are selected from this slot, not from a conventional weapon slot.
- Open the Gizmo wheel and highlight Lucky Locator.
- Press the activation control shown for your platform. The Gizmo is consumed and a marker appears for the buried Sprite Chest.
- Follow the marker while checking for opponents and the Storm. Avoid a direct route through an exposed, busy landmark if a safer path is available.
- Reach the marked location and use the Pickaxe to uncover the chest when the terrain has buried it.
- Open the chest, equip the Sprite that is new to your collection, and move immediately toward your planned extraction method.
- Complete the extraction at a safe Extraction Site or with a Portable Extractor. Treat the process as unfinished until the Sprite has been secured.
Managing the main risks
Another player reaches the marker first
The chest marker is not private. An opponent can see or discover the objective and arrive before you. Activate from cover, listen for nearby movement, and avoid standing still while uncovering the chest. If the area becomes contested, disengage and return with a better angle rather than forcing a fight beside the objective.

The Storm starts moving
A marker outside the safe zone can turn a collection run into an extraction race. Check the next circle before activation and keep mobility available for the return trip. If the Storm is already closing, delay the Locator until you can operate inside a stable zone.

You are eliminated after opening the chest
Opening the chest is not the same as completing the objective. Elimination before extraction can waste the run, so move directly to the extraction method you selected instead of taking unnecessary fights or detouring for extra loot.
You lack a public Extraction Site
A Portable Extractor is useful when public sites are distant, exposed, or controlled by another team. It gives you a way to secure the Sprite without crossing the map to a contested location. If you have neither a safe site nor a Portable Extractor, consider postponing activation.

The practical distinction is certainty. A standard Sprite Locator helps you find a chest, while a Lucky Locator changes what you can expect to find inside it. That makes the Lucky version more valuable when only a handful of collection entries remain.
Useful situations and poor ones
Good situation: the final few Sprites
You have mastered most of the available Sprites, normal chests are repeating entries, and you are entering a match with a full loadout. Activate in a safe zone, use the marker to reach the chest, and extract immediately. This is the clearest case for converting the Gizmo into collection progress.

Good situation: a Portable Extractor is ready
A Portable Extractor reduces dependence on a public site. You can choose a safer position after opening the chest and avoid a long, predictable rotation through enemy territory.
Poor situation: early landing with no gear
Using the Locator immediately after landing exposes the objective before you can defend it. The guaranteed contents do not compensate for being eliminated with no shields, weapon, or escape route.
Poor situation: a moving Storm and crowded point of interest
A chest in or near a busy area is easy for opponents to contest, while a moving Storm limits your time to uncover and extract. Loot and rotate first, then activate from a stable position.
Poor situation: the season is nearly over but you cannot finish extraction
Do not activate merely to avoid owning an unused item. If the remaining match time, circle position, or extraction access makes completion unlikely, preserve the Gizmo for a match in which the full sequence is realistic—provided the season timer still allows it.
Common questions and fixes
Does it guarantee a specific missing Sprite?
No. It guarantees that the chest contains a Sprite absent from your collection, but it does not let you name the result or guarantee rarity.

Can I trade or drop a Lucky Locator?
No. Epic’s Extraction Gizmo rules do not allow these items to be traded or dropped on elimination.
Why can’t I find it in a normal inventory slot?
Equip the Pickaxe and open the Gizmo wheel. Extraction Gizmos are accessed there rather than alongside ordinary weapons.
What if the chest marker disappears?
Recheck the map and your position, then look for the buried chest around the marked area. If another player has already taken the objective or you were eliminated, the run may no longer be recoverable; avoid consuming another Locator until you have confirmed that your collection still needs one.

No. Chapter 7 Season 3 Gizmos expire when that season ends. Use the in-game timer as the final authority for the remaining window.
Bottom line for deciding in a match
Use a Lucky Locator when you have verified a collection gap, finished gearing up, and can reach and extract the marked chest from a defensible safe-zone position. Save it for late-stage or unusually stubborn gaps, not for an improvised early-game gamble. Remember that the guarantee is “new to your collection,” not “the exact Sprite you want,” and spend it before the Chapter 7 Season 3 expiration.
