Littelfuse’s September 21, 2026 product-change notice starts the phase-out of its remaining active microcontroller families, including products identified in industry coverage as the eZ80 line. For a circuit-protection designer, this is not a change to fuses, breakers, transient suppressors or other protection components. It matters when an affected eZ80 is the processor that monitors faults, controls a protection subsystem, logs events or manages a protected product.

The immediate action is to verify the exact part number against the notice’s attached affected-part list, then choose between a constrained last-time buy and a full migration. The last-time-buy cutoff is December 21, 2026, and acceptance does not guarantee that all requested units will be supplied.

What Littelfuse announced

Product Change Notice PDN ZAC26-0074, dated September 21, 2026, says Littelfuse will phase out all remaining active microcontroller product families. The notice places the complete affected part-number list in an attachment. Do not assume that every eZ80 ordering code, package, speed grade or derivative is included until your purchasing or engineering team checks that attachment in the official Littelfuse PCN.

An October 11, 2026 report describes the announcement as affecting the eZ80 and other Littelfuse MCU lines, but the PCN controls the contractual dates and conditions. The practical meaning is an end-of-life process, not an immediate power-down of products already in the field.

Last-time-buy deadline December 21, 2026 Orders must be submitted by this date for consideration; it is not a guarantee that all requested quantity will be accepted.
Delivery-schedule requests Through June 21, 2027 Customers may request schedules for accepted orders, but actual delivery can extend beyond that date.
Supply conditions Limited supply; full fulfillment not guaranteed Quantities may be pushed out or canceled, depending on manufacturing schedules, capacity and material availability.
Order status Formal acceptance required A purchase request is not the same as an accepted allocation. Obtain written confirmation.
Accepted last-time-buy terms Non-cancelable, non-returnable and non-reschedulable Once accepted, you carry the inventory, financial and storage risk.

For a regulated or long-service product, treat December 21 as an order cutoff, not as a promised shipment date. Build your plan around the quantities Littelfuse formally accepts and the schedule it confirms, while allowing for later delivery.

What the eZ80 is—and what compatibility does not prove

The eZ80 is an 8-bit processor architecture described in Zilog’s eZ80 CPU User Manual, revision UM007715-0415 (April 2015). It provides a Z80-compatible operating mode and a 24-bit Address and Data Long (ADL) mode. In ADL mode, the architecture supports linear addressing of up to 16 MB. The manual says Z80 and Z180 programs can execute with little or no modification.

Those are processor and software-architecture statements. They do not establish that another microcontroller is pin-compatible, electrically compatible, timing-compatible, supported by the same compiler and debugger, or suitable as a drop-in replacement for a complete board. Even another processor that executes the same instruction set can require a different power tree, reset circuit, clock source, memory interface, interrupt arrangement, peripherals, boot process and qualification effort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, the eZ80 is not a fuse or a circuit-protection component. It may be part of the control layer around protection hardware: for example, sampling a current sensor, deciding when to open a contactor, recording an overtemperature event or communicating a fault to a host controller. The retirement affects those systems only when their bill of materials contains an affected device or depends on its software and development ecosystem.

Why this matters in a protection system

Protection equipment often has a longer service obligation than the processor inside it. A board may remain installed for years in industrial controls, power equipment, instrumentation or communications gear. If its MCU becomes unavailable, the immediate risk is not that a fuse stops working; it is that you cannot build replacement control boards, service returned units or reproduce a qualified safety response.

Potentially affected functions include:

  • Sampling voltage, current, temperature or pressure sensors used to trigger protective action.
  • Driving relays, contactors, solid-state switches or gate-control circuitry.
  • Applying delay, retry, latching and fault-clear logic.
  • Storing fault history, calibration constants and service counters.
  • Providing communications, diagnostics or a maintenance interface.
  • Supervising a separate hardware protection path and reporting its state.

The consequence depends on the exact product. A non-safety monitor may tolerate a board redesign and firmware port. A certified protection controller may require a formal change assessment, regression testing, environmental testing and renewed customer or authority approval.

Step 1: prove whether your design is exposed

  1. Inventory exact orderable numbers. Search released bills of materials, approved-vendor lists, service-part records and contract-manufacturer data for every eZ80 or other Littelfuse MCU ordering code. Include production, engineering, spare and regional variants.
  2. Check the PCN attachment. Match the complete part number, package and revision to the affected list in PDN ZAC26-0074. Record the result in your component-lifecycle system. Do not generalize from a family name or from a distributor search result.
  3. Map each use to a product variant. Identify which hardware revision, firmware image, bootloader, compiler version, debugger and field-service procedure depend on that device.
  4. Document architecture dependencies. Record whether the design uses Z80-compatible mode, ADL mode, external memory, special wait-state behavior, interrupt modes, serial interfaces, timers, GPIO, DMA-like features or device-specific peripherals.
  5. Classify the protection role. Separate safety-critical trip logic from monitoring, display, logging and communications. This determines the evidence needed for a substitute or redesign.
  6. Set the required support horizon. Estimate production demand, repair demand, warranty obligations, installed-base replacements and qualification samples through the planned end of service.

If the exact device is not in the attachment, the retirement notice alone does not prove that your part is discontinued. Keep the written determination and continue normal lifecycle monitoring.

Route 1: secure a controlled last-time buy

A last-time buy can be sensible when the existing design is stable, qualification is expensive and demand is predictable. It is not automatically the lower-risk choice: the PCN limits supply and makes accepted orders NCNR.

Build a demand model

Forecast more than factory consumption. Include units already committed, expected field failures, depot repairs, destructive-test samples, engineering rework, minimum service stock and a contingency for scrap. For a protection controller, estimate the number of replacement boards rather than simply multiplying annual production by years.

Address storage and aging

Define the package, moisture sensitivity, temperature and humidity limits, traceability requirements, stock-rotation method and inspection policy for long-term storage. A large buy creates exposure to handling damage, corrosion, counterfeit substitution and loss of programming or calibration records. Preserve approved incoming-inspection procedures and lot traceability.

Get acceptance in writing

Submit the order before December 21, 2026, then obtain written confirmation of the accepted quantity and delivery schedule. The notice allows schedule requests through June 21, 2027, but warns that manufacturing capacity and material availability can push deliveries later. Do not treat an internal purchase order, distributor quote or requested quantity as an allocation.

Plan for allocation shortfall

Model at least three cases: the full requested quantity, the quantity formally accepted and a materially reduced allocation. Decide in advance which customers, product variants or repair obligations receive stock if supply is constrained. Because accepted orders cannot be canceled, returned or rescheduled, secure management approval before committing cash and storage space.

Route 2: redesign or migrate

Redesign is the durable option when the service horizon exceeds available stock, demand is uncertain or the existing toolchain is already difficult to maintain. Select candidates by system behavior, not by instruction-set marketing.

Compare electrical and physical interfaces

Check supply-voltage range, reset thresholds, clock requirements, oscillator startup, input leakage, output drive, analog characteristics, package footprint, thermal behavior and decoupling. A processor with similar code execution may still require a new regulator, level shifter, crystal network or board layout.

Recreate timing and protection behavior

Measure interrupt latency, timer resolution, watchdog behavior, startup sequencing, brownout response, ADC sampling timing and output-state behavior during reset. Protection decisions that were safe on the original MCU must remain safe across clock tolerances, compiler changes and fault conditions.

Port the complete software environment

Inventory compiler and assembler versions, linker scripts, startup code, interrupt vectors, libraries, bootloader, flash-programming tools, debugger probes, manufacturing test scripts and field-update procedures. Z80 source compatibility can reduce code conversion, but it does not remove work caused by different peripherals, memory maps or debug interfaces.

Requalify the product

Repeat functional, electrical, environmental and EMC testing appropriate to the product. Inject sensor faults, open and short circuits, brownouts, watchdog events, communication loss and reset during a trip decision. Verify that the safe state is reached and retained under every relevant power and timing condition.

Existing supply versus migration

Decision factor Last-time buy Redesign or migration
Availability Depends on the quantity Littelfuse accepts; full fulfillment is not guaranteed. Depends on selecting and qualifying a continuing device; no universal successor is established by the notice.
Near-term schedule Preserves the current board if accepted stock arrives, but deliveries may slip beyond June 21, 2027. Requires redesign, prototypes, software work and verification before release.
Firmware effort Lowest if the current image and toolchain remain usable. Can range from a source-level port to a substantial rewrite around new peripherals and memory.
Hardware effort No planned board change, but storage and incoming-inspection controls are needed. May require a new footprint, power, clock, reset, memory and debug design.
Lifecycle risk Concentrates risk in finite inventory, aging and allocation shortfall. Moves risk to qualification, supply-chain approval and migration defects.
Long-term support Suitable only for the service life covered by confirmed stock. Can support a longer horizon if the replacement ecosystem is maintained and qualified.

Validation checklist for a protection-controller migration

  • Power: Verify rails, sequencing, brownout thresholds, current transients and decoupling over temperature.
  • Clock and reset: Test oscillator tolerance, startup time, watchdog expiry, reset pin behavior and recovery after interrupted power.
  • Memory: Confirm address width, wait states, nonvolatile-memory endurance, boot placement, checksum handling and corruption recovery.
  • Inputs: Recheck sensor ranges, filtering, sampling rate, threshold hysteresis and behavior with disconnected or saturated sensors.
  • Outputs: Verify relay or gate-driver timing, default states during reset, fault latching and energy limits for connected loads.
  • Firmware: Rebuild with controlled tool versions, compare generated timing-critical code and run regression tests on every protection path.
  • Communications: Check electrical levels, baud-rate error, interrupt load, protocol timing and behavior when the host is absent.
  • Manufacturing: Requalify programming fixtures, debug adapters, serial-number handling, calibration and end-of-line fault injection.
  • Compliance: Determine whether the MCU change triggers safety, EMC, cybersecurity, customer or regulatory reapproval.

Board-level details that can be easy to miss

A documented eZ80 module project shows why “same CPU family” is not a complete hardware description. The builder reports a breakout board, decoupling capacitors, ZDI access, a Smart Cable adapter for flash and debugging, and explicit clock choices. That account is an individual project report, not a validated reference design or a general recommendation; it is useful as a reminder to inventory every support circuit around the processor. See the project description for those implementation details.

During a migration, capture equivalent information for your own board: programming connector, debug access, flash algorithm, oscillator parts, bypass-capacitor placement, external memory, pull-ups, reset supervisor and test points. Omitting one of these can leave production or service unable to program a board even when the application firmware is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common planning errors

  • Assuming every eZ80 is affected: verify the attached part-number list first.
  • Treating the deadline as a shipment promise: the deadline is for orders; accepted quantity and delivery remain constrained.
  • Buying only production quantity: service, repair and qualification demand can outlast the factory plan.
  • Choosing a replacement by instruction set alone: compare electrical, timing, peripheral, package and toolchain behavior.
  • Leaving the old debugger in the process: confirm programming and debug support for the migrated board.
  • Skipping fault-injection testing: a protection controller must be tested in abnormal states, not only during normal operation.
  • Ignoring contractual terms: accepted last-time-buy orders are non-cancelable, non-returnable and non-reschedulable.

What is and is not established today

The retirement notice establishes the phase-out, the December 21, 2026 last-time-buy cutoff and the supply terms described above. It does not identify a universal replacement, guarantee current distributor inventory, provide a price, or prove that a different MCU will be a drop-in substitute. Those decisions require your exact affected part number, system requirements, supplier confirmation and qualification plan.

For an eZ80-based protection system, the responsible sequence is therefore: confirm exposure, quantify the service obligation, obtain a written allocation if buying stock, and run a complete hardware-and-software migration in parallel when the support horizon or supply uncertainty justifies it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the eZ80 itself a circuit-protection device?

No. It is a processor. It may control or monitor protection hardware, but the retirement concerns the controller’s availability rather than the operation of fuses, breakers or suppressors.

Does Z80 software compatibility make another processor a drop-in replacement?

No. Z80-compatible code can reduce porting effort, but pinout, power, timing, peripherals, memory, debug tools and qualification still have to be validated for the complete product.
