Lithium is used for far more than electric-car batteries. The latest global estimate from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) places batteries at 88% of lithium end use in 2026, leaving 12% for ceramics and glass, lubricating greases, specialized air treatment, continuous-casting mold fluxes, medical pharmaceuticals and other industrial applications. The largest non-battery category is ceramics and glass; lithium-complex grease is the clearest everyday product connection, while air treatment is a specialized technology used in confined environments such as spacecraft and submarines.
What the latest global estimate actually measures
The USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 estimate describes global lithium end use. It is not a measure of lithium ore reserves, mine production, the dollar value of finished goods or the number of electric vehicles sold. “Batteries” is also a broad category: the 88% figure covers battery uses generally, not electric-car batteries alone. The published breakdown does not separate electric vehicles from phones, laptops, grid storage or other battery products.

The remaining 12% is distributed across several very different applications. Some consume lithium as a mineral concentrate in a formulation; others use a processed lithium compound as a chemical ingredient; and some use it as an industrial process input. A small percentage can still represent a substantial supply chain because the figures describe the share of total lithium demand, not the quantity in an individual product.

The 2025 and 2026 snapshots differ by one percentage point in batteries and ceramics and glass. They should be read as dated global estimates, not as a complete time series or proof that demand moved from one application to another. Local use patterns can differ considerably from the worldwide mix.

Ceramics and glass: the largest non-battery use
Lithium minerals can be supplied directly as mineral concentrates for glass and ceramic manufacturing. In a formulation, lithium-containing material helps producers make specialized glass and ceramic products. The USGS assigns this category 4% of global lithium end use in its 2026 estimate, making it the largest non-battery destination.
This is a materials-engineering use rather than a consumer-facing lithium product. A finished glass panel, laboratory item or ceramic component may contain lithium-derived ingredients even though a buyer would not see “lithium” listed as a separate functional part. The mineral or compound is selected for the behavior it gives the overall formulation, so the relevant comparison is between complete recipes and manufacturing requirements, not between loose lithium and a finished object.

- Setting: Manufacturing plants and specialty-material supply chains, not a typical household purchase.
- Scale: Four percent of global lithium end use is small beside batteries but larger than any other non-battery category in the 2026 estimate.
- Limits: The estimate does not identify a universal recipe, product list or lithium content for every glass or ceramic item.
Lubricating grease: why lithium is used as a thickener
Lithium compounds are used as thickeners in lubricating grease. A thickener turns a liquid lubricating oil into a semisolid product that can stay where it is applied instead of immediately flowing away. Lithium-complex grease is therefore a concrete maintenance consumable linked to lithium’s documented use.
Grease is not the same thing as the base oil. The oil supplies lubrication, while the thickener creates the grease structure that carries and releases that oil during service. In a lithium-thickened product, the lithium compound is part of that structural system. This explains why lithium can be present in a maintenance product without being an energy-storage material.

Where a reader is likely to encounter it
Lithium-complex grease is sold through industrial-maintenance, machinery-service and automotive-service channels. Product labels normally identify the grease type or thickener system rather than advertising the mined source of the lithium. If you need to identify a product, look at the technical data sheet or safety data sheet for the thickener description; do not assume that every grease is lithium-based.
What the 2% figure means
Lubricating greases account for 2% of global lithium end use in both the 2025 and 2026 USGS estimates. That is a demand share for lithium entering grease manufacture, not a claim that 2% of all grease products contain lithium or that 2% of a grease cartridge is lithium.

Air treatment: a specialized answer to “Is lithium used for air purification?”
Yes, but the documented use is specialized rather than the ordinary consumer air-filter market. The USGS assigns air treatment 1% of global lithium end use in 2026. Lithium compounds are associated with carbon-dioxide removal and air-purification systems used in confined environments such as spacecraft or submarines.
In those settings, air treatment is a life-support and atmosphere-management problem. A system must deal with a closed or tightly controlled volume in which carbon dioxide can accumulate and fresh outside air is limited or unavailable. Lithium-based chemistry can be selected as part of that specialized removal process.
What this does not mean
- It does not mean that a normal room air purifier requires lithium.
- It does not mean that a lithium battery is filtering the air.
- It does not establish that every spacecraft or submarine uses the same lithium compound or system design.
- It does not provide a consumer recommendation for modifying an air cleaner.
The 1% share is unchanged between the 2025 and 2026 global estimates. The category is important for specialized engineering, but it is not a major outlet by volume compared with batteries or glass and ceramics.

Continuous-casting mold flux powders in steelmaking
Lithium compounds are used in mold-flux powders for continuous casting, a metallurgical process input. During continuous casting, molten metal is formed into a continuously produced strand. Mold flux is a powder added around the casting operation to perform process functions determined by the steelmaker’s formulation and operating conditions.
For a general reader, the key point is that this is an industrial consumable, not a product normally purchased on its own. The USGS places continuous-casting mold flux powders at 1% of global lithium end use in both 2025 and 2026. The percentage describes lithium going into these powders, not the share of steel made by continuous casting and not the lithium content of every mold-flux product.
Medical pharmaceuticals: a real use, not self-treatment advice
Medical applications represent 1% of global lithium end use in the USGS 2026 estimate. The USGS critical-minerals methodology includes psychotherapeutic pharmaceutical preparation among lithium-consuming industries.
This is an industry classification that confirms a medical-material use for lithium. It does not tell a reader which medicine is appropriate, how much to take, or whether a lithium-containing medicine is safe for a particular person. Prescription decisions depend on a clinician, an approved product label and the patient’s medical circumstances. The 1% figure should therefore be read as a demand category, not as health guidance.
Other industrial uses
The 2026 estimate groups 3% of global lithium end use under “other.” This catch-all category is secondary and application-specific rather than one single product family. The USGS’s 2025 industry assessment also identifies lithium-related activity involving aluminum alloys and other manufacturing sectors.

Because the category combines different uses, its 3% share cannot be assigned to aluminum, a particular alloy grade or a single manufacturing process. A responsible description is that lithium has additional industrial roles beyond the named categories, but the available estimate does not provide a detailed percentage for each one.
How lithium appears in a product or process
Looking at the physical form of the input helps explain why these uses seem unrelated:
- Mineral concentrate: In ceramics and glass, lithium minerals may enter the formulation directly as concentrates.
- Chemical ingredient: In grease, air treatment and mold-flux applications, a lithium compound is selected for a defined material or process function.
- Pharmaceutical preparation: In the medical category, lithium-consuming manufacture is counted as part of the pharmaceutical industry.
- Unspecified industrial input: The “other” category covers additional manufacturing applications whose individual shares are not stated.
This distinction also explains why a search for a “lithium product” can be misleading. A buyer may encounter a branded grease, a glass formulation or a specialty process powder rather than a raw mineral labeled for general use.

Four questions provide a useful way to compare the applications without treating them as interchangeable:

That last point matters. A material can be a small percentage of total demand yet be difficult to replace in a particular process. Conversely, a manufacturer may have alternatives in one formulation but not another. The percentages alone cannot answer a substitution question.

Common misconceptions to avoid
“All lithium demand is for electric cars.”
No. The USGS’s 2026 global estimate puts all battery uses at 88%, not electric cars alone. The other 12% includes the non-battery categories described above.
“Lithium in glass means glass is a battery material.”
No. Lithium-containing glass and ceramic formulations are materials applications. They do not turn the finished product into an energy-storage device.
“Every grease contains lithium.”
No. Lithium compounds are one documented thickener system. A grease must be identified by its specification or technical documentation rather than assumed to be lithium-based.
“Lithium air purification is the same as a home purifier.”
No. The documented air-treatment use concerns specialized carbon-dioxide removal and purification in confined environments such as spacecraft or submarines. It is not evidence that ordinary household filters need lithium.
“The percentages show the value of each market.”
No. They are shares of global lithium end use. They do not represent sales value, profit, the value of finished products or lithium-ore reserves.
Bottom line for readers
Besides batteries, lithium is used most prominently in glass and ceramics, then in lubricating greases, specialized air treatment, continuous-casting mold fluxes and medical pharmaceuticals.
