What lights should beachfront homes use to protect sea turtle hatchlings?

Use no light unless it is needed for safety. For essential lighting, choose the lowest practical output, mount it as low as possible, aim it downward, and use a fully shielded fixture whose source cannot be seen from the beach. The source should be a genuine long-wavelength amber, orange, or red LED that emits wavelengths greater than 560 nanometers and no wavelengths below 560 nanometers, the specification used by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

A bulb’s appearance is not proof that it qualifies. Check the product’s actual spectrum, current FWC wildlife-lighting certification and approved conditions of use, compatibility with the fixture, and the ordinance for your property. Interior, pool and reflected light must be controlled as well.

Begin with darkness

Turning off unnecessary lighting is the simplest and most effective protection. Decorative uplights, string lights, landscape accents, illuminated signs and lights left on in empty rooms can make the beach brighter without providing a safety benefit. Remove those sources from the nighttime routine.

Do not switch off a light that people need for stairs, entrances, parking or other safety tasks. Instead, reduce its output, shorten its operating time, move it lower, and shield it so neither the lamp nor its glow is visible from the beach. A safety light that is hidden from beach view is preferable to a brighter fixture pointed toward the shoreline.

FWC sea-turtle biologist Dr. Robbin Trindell explains the stakes this way: “Interfering with a sea turtle hatchling’s trek to the ocean can have fatal consequences.” Keeping the beach, beachfront buildings and hatchlings’ path dark gives them space to orient toward the sea.

The specifications that make a light turtle-safe

Use all of these controls together. A compliant-looking bulb in an exposed or high fixture can still send light toward the beach.

Criterion What to require What to check on site
Need Only lighting required for safety or a specific task Switch off decorative and vacant-area lights
Spectrum Long-wavelength source greater than 560 nm, with no wavelengths below 560 nm Read the manufacturer’s spectral specification; do not rely on color names
Source type Qualifying amber, orange or red LED Confirm that the exact lamp or board, not merely the fixture family, is listed
Shielding Full cutoff: no light emitted above the 90-degree plane Stand at likely beach viewpoints and verify that the glowing source and reflected lens are hidden
Direction Downward-directed beam Adjust the head or visor so light does not travel horizontally
Height and output Lowest practical mounting height and minimum output that meets the task Use a lower-lumen setting or shorter duty cycle where safe
Controls Timer, photocell or short-duration motion sensor when appropriate Test that the light turns off promptly after the task ends
Certification Current FWC wildlife-lighting certification and approved use conditions Check the current FWC certified list before purchase and after product changes

How to select and install necessary exterior lighting

  1. Define the safety task. Write down why the light is needed, such as illuminating a step or door lock. If no specific task exists, leave it off.
  2. Choose the lowest practical location. A low wall, stair riser or doorway-side fixture generally needs less output than a high-mounted floodlight. Keep the fixture as low as safety and local code allow.
  3. Specify the spectrum in writing. Require documentation showing emissions greater than 560 nm and no emissions below 560 nm. “Amber,” “orange,” “red,” “turtle-friendly” or “wildlife-safe” printed on a package is not enough without the underlying specification.
  4. Specify full cutoff. FWC’s criterion means no light emitted above a 90-degree plane. A hood that blocks only the top of a lamp is insufficient if the glowing lens remains visible from the beach.
  5. Check every viewing angle. Walk the beach, dunes and adjacent properties after dark. Look back toward the home from standing and low angles. Shield gaps, side windows and bright reflections that are visible from those positions.
  6. Add automatic control. Use a short-duration motion detector, timer or other control where it can safely replace an all-night light. Set the shortest practical on-time and test the sensor from the path people actually use.
  7. Verify the exact product and installation. Review the current FWC certified-product list, restrictions and approved conditions for the specific lamp, LED board or fixture. Certification applies to a product and its approved use; changing the lamp, cover, orientation or mounting can defeat the result.

Which light sources and labels are reliable?

Product or label How to treat it Reason
Amber, orange or red LED with documented spectrum Potentially suitable when it meets the greater-than-560-nm/no-below-560-nm rule and is fully shielded The wavelength and installation, rather than the color name, determine suitability
PC amber LED Do not assume it qualifies FWC identifies PC amber as not qualifying for its source criterion
RGB, dual-board or color-changing LED Do not use for wildlife compliance FWC identifies these options as non-qualifying
Yellow “bug light” Not established by appearance alone A yellow-looking lamp may still emit shorter wavelengths; obtain a verified spectrum
Kelvin or CCT-only label Insufficient evidence Color-temperature numbers do not establish the required emission cutoff
Colored party or decorative light Turn it off during periods when turtles may be present Decorative light has no safety justification and can be visible from the beach

Retrofitting common exterior fixtures

Globe and carriage fixtures

Clear globes and open carriage lanterns scatter light in every direction. Replacing only the lamp does not solve the problem if the glowing globe remains visible. Replace the fixture with a directional, recessed or fully shielded model, or add a shield that blocks every beach-facing angle. Do not rely on a partial cap that leaves side emission exposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Floodlights and security lights

Re-aim heads toward the ground and reduce the output to the minimum that covers the safety area. A motion sensor can prevent hours of unnecessary illumination. If the housing still exposes the lens from the beach, install a true full-cutoff replacement rather than taping or improvising a small visor.

Path and stair lighting

Use low-mounted, downward fixtures with narrow coverage. Space several dim fixtures only when one light cannot safely cover the route; a single high-output floodlight is usually harder to shield. Confirm that railings, wet pavement and pale walls are not creating a visible glow toward the shoreline.

Control light inside the home

Hatchlings respond to visible brightness, not just outdoor fixtures. At night, close curtains or blinds in rooms facing the beach and switch off unneeded interior lights. Move table and floor lamps away from windows, and arrange shades so the lamp itself cannot be seen through glass.

Where local rules require it, use window tint, darker glazing or approved coverings. Check the whole opening, including sidelights, transoms, sliding doors and balconies. A shaded fixture outside cannot prevent a bright room behind uncovered glass from reaching the beach.

Manage pools, vegetation and reflected glow

Pool lighting

Pool surfaces can reflect a broad glow even when the lamp is not aimed directly at the beach. FWC describes locking pool lights to amber or red during nesting season and improving vegetation buffers. Confirm that the setting is available on your equipment, that it meets the required spectrum, and that local rules permit the operating schedule.

Vegetation buffers

Dense, healthy vegetation between a building and the beach can block line of sight. It is a supporting measure, not a substitute for turning off unnecessary lights or shielding fixtures. Maintain the buffer without creating an unsafe route or violating dune-protection rules.

Temporary work and event lighting

Plan construction, maintenance and gatherings so portable lamps face inland and downward, operate only while people are present, and are removed when the task ends. Do not use colored decorative strings as a workaround for an unshielded fixture.

Buying and verifying a product

A search such as sea turtle friendly amber LED bulb can locate products, but it is only a category query. Before ordering, obtain the exact model number, spectral data, shielding details, output, mounting instructions and compatibility information. Then compare that product with the current FWC certified list and its approved conditions of use.

Certification status can change when a manufacturer revises an LED board, lens or housing. Save the listing and specification sheet that applied when you installed the light, and recheck the current list when replacing a lamp. If a seller cannot provide the spectrum or the fixture’s cutoff geometry, treat the product as unverified.

For a retrofit, compare the cost and safety of a complete shielded fixture with an add-on shield. An add-on is acceptable only when it blocks all beach-facing views and remains secure in wind, salt and storms. Follow electrical, wet-location and pool-equipment instructions in addition to wildlife-lighting requirements.

Florida seasons and local ordinances

Florida’s statutory framework directs the Department of Environmental Protection to designate coastal areas used or likely to be used for nesting and establish guidelines for local regulation. FWC provides ordinance resources and a model ordinance, but a model is guidance, not the code that automatically applies to every property.

FWC’s public information describes Florida’s nesting season as March 1 through October 31. Fort Myers Beach publishes May 1 through October 31 for its local season. The difference is a reminder to check the current county or municipal code, permit conditions and enforcement guidance for the exact address. Keep beach-facing light controlled whenever turtles may be present; there is no universal product exemption outside a calendar period.

Fort Myers Beach’s published ordinance is a geographically specific example. It applies to all properties in town, not only parcels directly on the beach, and addresses long-wavelength amber or red LEDs, low downward-directed shielded fixtures and window-glazing or covering measures. Do not treat those dates or requirements as statewide rules.

Nightly inspection and troubleshooting

  • You can see the glowing lamp from the beach: Reposition or replace the fixture, then repeat the check from several points and low angles.
  • The lamp is amber but documentation is missing: Do not infer compliance from color. Obtain spectral data or choose a product with current certification.
  • A shield creates a bright patch on a wall or window: Lower output, change the angle, add an approved shield or move the fixture so reflected light is not visible beachward.
  • A motion sensor stays on: Reduce sensitivity and on-time, remove triggers such as moving vegetation, and verify that the safety area remains illuminated when occupied.
  • Indoor light is still visible: Close or upgrade coverings, move lamps farther from glass, and inspect doors and sidelights as well as windows.
  • A pool produces a nighttime glow: Use the equipment’s approved amber or red setting where available, add or maintain a vegetation buffer, and confirm the setting with local guidance.
  • A product was certified but the installation changed: Recheck the certification conditions. A different lens, lamp, height or orientation may no longer match the approved use.

A practical decision rule

For every light, ask three questions: Is it necessary? Can it be made lower, dimmer and shorter-lived? Can the source and its reflected glow be completely hidden from the beach while meeting the documented long-wavelength specification? If any answer is no, turn it off when safe or replace it with a configuration that satisfies all three conditions. Finally, confirm the current local ordinance and FWC information before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a bulb be compliant if its fixture is not shielded?

No. The wavelength requirement and the fixture’s optical control work together. A qualifying source can still be visible from the beach if the housing allows side or upward emission, so the fixture must meet full-cutoff and downward-direction requirements as installed.

Do local nesting-season dates make ordinary lighting safe at other times?

No automatic exemption applies everywhere. Official dates differ by location, and the concern is whether turtles may encounter visible light. Use the current dates and rules for your property and keep unnecessary beach-facing light off whenever turtles could be present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when no certified replacement fits my existing fixture?

Leave the unnecessary light off. For a necessary light, replace the entire housing with a compatible, fully shielded fixture or consult the local authority and an installer about an approved retrofit; do not assume a colored replacement bulb fixes an exposed fixture.
