What Kobalt 24V and 40V Yard Tools Are Best For (and How to Choose)

Choose by the job and the exact model, not by voltage alone. Kobalt’s 24V and 40V families both cover several handheld yard-tool categories. The 40V line also includes mower offerings, while 24V can make sense when you already own compatible batteries or need a documented handheld tool for lighter work. Battery capacity, included kit, runtime guidance, weight, yard conditions and confirmed compatibility matter more than the number printed before the V.

What the 24V and 40V labels actually tell you

Voltage identifies a battery platform; it is not a universal performance score. A tool’s practical results depend on its motor and design, the battery’s capacity, the cutting or blowing hardware, workload, grass or brush conditions, and how the manufacturer specifies the kit. A 40V tool should not automatically be treated as twice as capable as a 20V-class tool, and a 24V tool is not automatically inadequate for every yard.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The available Kobalt material shows overlap between the two families. Search results for the 24V yard-tool ecosystem name string trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers and a mower, although that list is not a verified current catalog. Kobalt’s 40V overview identifies mowers, string trimmers, blowers and chainsaws. A Lowe’s corporate announcement from 2014 described seven tools powered by one 40-volt rechargeable battery, including a hedge trimmer, pole saw, string trimmer/edger, blower, chainsaw and two mowers. That announcement is historical and does not establish today’s model count or availability.

Platform Categories identified in the available material Best reason to consider it What is not established
24V String trimmer, blower, chainsaw, hedge trimmer and a mower are named in a search result. A documented 24V tool fits the task, or you already own compatible 24V batteries. A complete current lineup, model-level runtime, power ranking or current prices.
40V Mowers, string trimmers, blowers and chainsaws are identified by Kobalt; Lowe’s 2014 announcement also named a hedge trimmer and pole saw. You want a Kobalt mower or are building around the 40V outdoor-equipment family. A complete current lineup, current model availability, independent performance tests or proof that 40V is always better.

When a Kobalt 24V tool is the better fit

Existing 24V batteries are the strongest practical reason

If your household already owns confirmed-compatible Kobalt 24V batteries and chargers, a 24V yard tool can avoid buying another battery system. Verify the exact tool and battery in the manual before assuming that a pack fits. Platform branding alone is not enough, because battery interfaces and approved combinations can vary by model or generation.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Handheld, intermittent jobs

A 24V string trimmer, blower, chainsaw or hedge trimmer may be sensible when the job is limited to edging, clearing a patio, pruning branches within the tool’s stated limits or shaping a small hedge. The evidence does not establish a universal workload threshold for 24V, so use the individual manual’s cutting limits, bar length, runtime guidance and duty instructions.

A 24V mower requires model-specific scrutiny

The search material mentions a mower in the 24V ecosystem, but it does not provide a verified current model, cutting width, recommended lawn area, battery count or runtime. Treat any 24V mower listing as a separate product decision rather than assuming it has the same capability as a 40V mower. Confirm whether the kit includes one battery or multiple batteries and whether the manual specifies a lawn size or operating conditions.

When a Kobalt 40V tool is the better fit

Mowing is the clearest 40V use case

Kobalt’s 40V outdoor-equipment overview includes mowers. One Kobalt-branded product page describes a Gen4 40V cordless mower as handling “up to 0.5 acres on a single charge” on flat areas. That is a manufacturer claim for a particular configuration, not an independent test or a guarantee for every lawn. The page’s figure cannot be transferred to every 40V mower, battery size or terrain.

Longer or heavier handheld work may justify checking 40V models

The 40V family also covers string trimmers, blowers and chainsaws. If you regularly clear a larger property, move substantial leaves, cut thicker material within a saw’s rated limits or want one platform that includes a mower, start by examining 40V models. Do not skip the specifications: a smaller 40V battery, a heavy tool or demanding wet vegetation can change the practical result.

Historical lineup claims are context, not a shopping list

Lowe’s 2014 announcement said seven tools shared one 40-volt rechargeable battery. It named a hedge trimmer, pole saw, string trimmer/edger, blower, chainsaw and two mowers. Because the announcement is historical, it should not be read as confirmation that those exact products remain on sale or that current batteries and tools are interchangeable with them.

Match the tool to the task

Mower

  • Check the exact cutting width, recommended lawn area, battery capacity and number of batteries supplied.
  • Look for the manufacturer’s stated conditions, such as the flat-area qualification attached to the 0.5-acre Gen4 40V claim.
  • Account for slopes, wet or tall grass, repeated stops, narrow gates and the need for a spare charged battery.
  • Confirm whether the charger in the kit matches the battery you plan to use.

String trimmer or edger

  • Compare the documented cutting width, shaft or handle design, head type and line-loading method.
  • Estimate how much perimeter you trim after mowing and whether the work is occasional or continuous.
  • Give extra weight to balance and harness or handle ergonomics; a higher-voltage tool that is tiring to control can be a poor fit.

Blower

  • Check the stated airflow or air-speed figures for the exact model, because voltage does not supply those figures by itself.
  • Consider whether you clear hard surfaces, beds, wet leaves or large piles. Those conditions affect runtime and the number of passes.
  • Confirm trigger, speed-control and tube features in the listing or manual rather than assuming that every 24V or 40V blower has the same controls.

Chainsaw

  • Use the specified bar length and cutting limits as the boundary for the work. Do not choose by voltage alone.
  • Check chain-tensioning instructions, oil requirements, brake features and approved battery sizes in the manual.
  • For work beyond the tool’s stated limits or for overhead and hazardous cutting, use a qualified professional instead of stretching a consumer tool’s capability.

Hedge trimmer or pole saw

  • Compare blade or bar length, reach, tool weight and whether the attachment is supplied.
  • For a pole saw, check the operating angle and the manual’s branch-size limits; the historical 40V announcement does not provide current specifications.

Use these comparison axes before buying

Decision axis What to verify on the exact model Why it changes the choice
Task and workload Mowing, trimming, blowing, pruning or sawing; frequency and material thickness. Two tools on the same platform can be designed for very different loads.
Yard size and conditions Area, slope, grass height, wetness, leaf volume, gates and obstacles. Runtime and maneuverability vary with terrain and resistance.
Battery capacity Capacity rating, number of packs included and whether the manual permits your existing pack. Voltage does not tell you how long a charge will last.
Runtime guidance The manufacturer’s stated runtime, test conditions and whether a figure applies to one battery or a pair. Published runtime is conditional, not a promise for every yard.
Weight and ergonomics Tool weight with the specified battery, handle layout, balance and adjustment range. Control and fatigue can matter more than nominal voltage.
Working dimensions Mower cutting width, trimmer swath, blower airflow, saw bar length or hedge-trimmer blade length. These dimensions determine how quickly and safely the tool can handle the job.
Kit contents and cost Tool-only versus kit, charger included, battery count, attachments and current availability. A lower tool price can become more expensive if you need a battery and charger.
Compatibility Manual-confirmed battery and charger part numbers. 24V and 40V batteries should not be assumed interchangeable.

How to choose a platform step by step

  1. Write down the actual jobs. Separate mowing from edging, leaf clearing, hedge work and branch cutting. A platform that suits one job may not have the right model for another.
  2. Measure the workload. Note lawn area, slopes, typical grass height, leaf volume, hedge length and the largest material you cut. Include whether the work is occasional or weekly.
  3. Inventory your batteries. Record the voltage, capacity, model number and charger. Do not rely on color, connector shape or a retailer category.
  4. Shortlist exact models. For each candidate, capture tool weight, cutting or blowing dimensions, stated runtime, battery requirements and kit contents. Mark any field the listing does not state as unknown.
  5. Read the manual’s compatibility section. Confirm approved battery and charger combinations, operating limits and maintenance requirements before purchase.
  6. Check the physical fit. If possible, handle the tool with its specified battery. A balanced trimmer or blower may be more useful than a heavier model with a higher platform voltage.
  7. Plan charging. Decide whether one battery can cover the work, whether you need a spare, and where packs will be charged and stored according to the manual.
  8. Recheck availability. Current catalogs, prices and kit contents can change. Historical announcements and search-result snippets are not substitutes for the current product page and manual.

How to interpret the 0.5-acre 40V mower claim

The phrase “up to 0.5 acres on a single charge” describes a specific Gen4 40V mower page and a flat-area qualification. “Up to” means the result is an upper bound under the manufacturer’s conditions, not a guaranteed coverage figure. Your result can be lower when the lawn is sloped, wet, unusually tall, rough or divided by obstacles that require extra passes. Battery capacity and the exact mower configuration also matter.

Use the claim as a screening question: a flat lawn near that size may be within the page’s stated scope, while a hilly or heavily overgrown property needs more conservative planning. Obtain the exact manual and current listing for the mower you are considering; the available material does not establish a universal 40V acreage rating.

Battery compatibility: the rule that prevents expensive mistakes

Kobalt-branded guidance says to match the battery voltage platform to the tool and to confirm exact compatibility in the manual. Do not put a 24V battery in a 40V tool, or a 40V battery in a 24V tool, because the platforms are not presented as interchangeable. Even within one voltage family, verify the battery series, capacity limits and charger requirements listed for that model.

  • Read the voltage and model markings on the battery, tool and charger.
  • Check the manual’s approved battery table or compatibility statement.
  • Confirm whether the product is tool-only or includes a battery and charger.
  • Do not modify connectors or use an adapter that the manufacturer does not approve.
  • Keep the purchase record and model numbers in case a safety notice applies later.

Recall and safety check for certain USB-C battery tools

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall covering specified Greenworks-made Kobalt 24V and 48V yard tools using USB-C batteries because of a fire hazard. The notice identifies affected product and battery numbers and describes a remedy involving replacement batteries and related materials. It does not mean that every Kobalt 24V or 40V product is recalled.

What the available evidence cannot tell you

There is no verified, exhaustive current catalog in the available material, and no model-by-model laboratory comparison of runtime, cutting power, airflow, noise or durability. Prices, stock status, battery capacities, weights and included accessories are not established for every model. No independent test proves that the 40V platform wins every task or that a 24V tool is the better value in every household.

That uncertainty is a reason to compare current model pages and manuals carefully, not a reason to treat voltage as a shortcut. When a specification is missing, mark it as “not stated” and contact the seller or manufacturer rather than guessing.

Practical platform choices for common households

Small property with occasional trimming and blowing

Start with a 24V handheld tool if its documented capability covers the work and you already own compatible batteries. Check runtime and weight for the longest session you expect, rather than buying a larger platform solely for its voltage label.

Home that needs a cordless mower plus handheld tools

Investigate the 40V mower and the matching trimmer or blower models as a system. Confirm the mower’s exact area guidance, battery count and charger, then decide whether the same platform covers the handheld jobs without excessive weight.

Mixed tools and no existing batteries

Compare complete kits, not bare tools. Add the cost and availability of batteries and chargers, then choose the platform whose current models meet all of your recurring tasks. A platform with one appealing mower but no suitable trimmer, blower or saw may be less practical than a family with balanced coverage.

Large, irregular or demanding yard

Prioritize battery capacity, spare-pack availability, tool balance and the manufacturer’s workload limits. The 0.5-acre statement for one flat-area mower configuration should not be used to promise coverage for a larger, sloped or obstructed property.

Bottom line

Choose a Kobalt 24V tool when the exact handheld model fits your work or when you already own compatible 24V batteries. Choose among Kobalt’s 40V models when a mower is central to the plan or the current 40V lineup better matches your workload. In both cases, verify the exact manual, battery and charger, capacity, kit contents, weight and task-specific dimensions. Voltage is a platform clue; it is not a substitute for those specifications.
