Mohamed Diawara is the Knicks’ clearest second-year breakout candidate entering 2026–27, but a leap is not guaranteed. Fans should watch whether he earns steady minutes, sustains his outside shooting, fits the team’s power-forward needs and gains coaches’ trust in consequential games.
Why Diawara is the player to watch
The NBA’s 2026–27 Knicks season preview, updated September 22, 2026, describes New York as a veteran team and says 21-year-old Diawara may be its only player under 25 with a good chance at regular rotation minutes. A second-round pick who appeared as a rookie in 2025–26, he made 36.9% of his three-point attempts that season. That percentage is a useful baseline, not a forecast. NBA.com’s season preview identifies him as the potential breakout story.

The case is about opportunity as much as individual development. The preview points to limited frontcourt depth and describes two possible lineup approaches: playing Karl-Anthony Towns at power forward alongside another big, or going small. It identifies OG Anunoby and Diawara as the roster’s only true fours. If Diawara improves in Year 2, preview author John Schuhmann writes, “If the latter shows improvement in Year 2, he’s a valuable piece.”

1. Regular minutes, not just a brief opening
Look for Diawara to appear consistently in the rotation, rather than receiving a short run only when injuries or a particular matchup create an opening. The preview anticipates regular-season opportunities, but does not say that a rotation place is secured. Continued minutes would be a stronger signal of progress than a temporary spike.

2. Whether the three-point shot holds up
Use his rookie 36.9% mark as a reference point, then watch whether he remains a credible perimeter option as opponents adjust. It also matters whether his attempts fit the offense rather than coming only in isolated stretches. The available figure describes his rookie season; it does not establish what he will shoot in 2026–27.
3. A workable role at power forward
With Towns at center, Diawara could have a chance to handle true-four minutes. Fans can also watch whether he has a place in smaller lineups. The preview supplies this roster and lineup context, but does not provide a detailed assessment of Diawara’s defensive ability or other specific skills, so those should be judged from his play rather than assumed from the role.

4. Greater trust when games matter
Diawara was outside the Knicks’ playoff rotation last spring. Earning a role in meaningful regular-season games would mark a step; making a case for postseason minutes would be a further one. Playoff time is a possibility, not an expectation—especially if the roster is healthy.

How to read the Knicks’ other young forward
Pacôme Dadiet is another young forward, but the NBA preview’s explicit breakout framing centers on Diawara. The official Knicks roster page lists Dadiet as a second-year player and gives his 2025–26 averages as 1.7 points, 0.4 assists and 0.9 rebounds across 29 games. Those figures show limited production to date; they do not make him the preview’s primary breakout pick.

What would make the breakout convincing?
The clearest evidence would be a combination: minutes that last beyond injury-driven stretches, reliable enough three-point shooting to keep defenses honest, a useful fit in frontcourt lineups and increasing trust in consequential games. No single indicator guarantees a breakout. The NBA preview names Diawara as a candidate because the roster may create an opening—not because a larger role or postseason contribution is assured.
