What Judges Look for in Microscopy Video Competitions

Judges usually reward microscopy videos that make a meaningful scientific observation understandable, distinctive, technically clean, and visually engaging. A beautiful clip can still fail if viewers cannot tell what they are seeing, while a scientifically important sequence can lose impact when focus, exposure, motion, artifacts, or captioning obscure the evidence.

There is no universal scorecard. Nikon Small World in Motion publishes originality, informational content, technical proficiency, and visual impact. The Microscopy Society of America (MSA) emphasizes scientific content together with exceptional composition and aesthetic qualities. NUS CBIS 2026 lists scientific interest, artistic creativity, technical quality, and caption content and quality, explicitly saying the criteria are not in order of importance. Use those recurring dimensions as a preparation framework, then follow the exact rules of the competition you enter.

The five qualities that recur across judging criteria

Scientific or informational meaning

The clip should show something a viewer can understand as scientifically meaningful: a structure, behavior, interaction, transformation, or reconstructed result. Official guidance from the MSA, Nikon Small World in Motion, and NUS CBIS all requires or names scientific interest, scientific content, or informational content.

Judges do not need a lecture in every frame, but they do need a clear point of observation. Identify the specimen or process and decide what the audience should notice. If the sequence is only attractive but its subject and significance are unknowable, it may not satisfy the information criterion.

Originality and creative choices

Originality is not the same as adding confusing effects. Nikon lists originality, NUS lists artistic creativity, and the MSA links scientific content with composition and aesthetic quality. A distinctive subject, unusual preparation, revealing time sequence, inventive reconstruction, or disciplined framing can make a real observation memorable.

Creative decisions should strengthen interpretation. Color, timing, cropping, and movement are useful when they direct attention or reveal a relationship; they are counterproductive when they conceal structures or imply information the data do not contain.

Technical quality

Technical proficiency appears in Nikon’s criteria. NUS gives concrete examples such as resolution, dynamic range, and artifacts. In practice, inspect focus, exposure, noise, compression, unwanted motion, stitching errors, and whether important detail remains legible at the size at which judges will view the entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These checks are practical applications of the published criteria, not a universal official checklist. A contest may define acceptable formats, processing, duration, or resolution differently, so technical polish cannot substitute for reading the entry rules.

Visual impact and composition

Nikon names visual impact, while the MSA refers to composition and aesthetic qualities. Strong composition gives the eye a subject, a readable scale, and a reason to follow the motion. Movement should reveal a process or relationship rather than merely keep the frame busy.

Caption and explanation

NUS includes caption content and quality in its judging criteria. The MSA asks for a short title, descriptive caption, scientific significance, acquisition information, and post-acquisition processing where applicable. A caption is therefore part of communication and, in some competitions, part of evaluation.

How major competitions frame the criteria

The following comparison shows what the published guidance actually establishes. It does not convert different contests into a single ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Competition or program Published judging emphasis Video and submission details Important qualification
Microscopy Society of America Micrograph Awards Scientific content plus exceptional composition and aesthetic qualities Video-category movie or streaming-data clips up to 15 seconds; accepted formats include MOV, MPG, AVI, MP4, and WMV; a permission form is required Rules apply to the MSA entry category, not every contest
Nikon Small World in Motion Originality, informational content, technical proficiency, and visual impact Judged by an independent expert panel The published page reviewed gives no numerical weights
NUS CBIS 2026 Scientific interest, artistic creativity, technical quality (including examples such as resolution, dynamic range, and artifacts), and caption content and quality Accepted still images, 3D reconstructions, and videos; highest-quality media in standard formats; detailed contributor and instrument information requested The rules say the criteria are not in order of importance; digital manipulation was limited to specified adjustments
Proteintech 2026 microscopy image competition Overall aesthetics, technical difficulty, research relevance, originality, and suitability; a public vote selected the overall winner Image competition rather than a video-specific rubric The listed entry deadline was October 5, 2026, so it had passed by October 16, 2026

None of the cited official criteria publishes a percentage breakdown. Do not claim, for example, that science counts for half the score unless the current rules for that specific contest say so.

Make the scientific point legible before editing for style

Define one observation

Write a one-sentence description before you choose music, transitions, color treatment, or titles: identify what is shown and what changes over time. If you cannot state the observation plainly, the judge may struggle to find it in the frame.

Choose motion that adds information

A video has an advantage when time, movement, z-stacking, flow, growth, transport, contraction, or reconstruction reveals something a still image would not communicate as clearly. This is a preparation recommendation inferred from the video format and the published information and visual-impact criteria, not a universal narrative requirement.

Show enough context to orient the viewer

Use framing that establishes the relevant structure before moving into detail. A very tight crop can be impressive but meaningless if the audience cannot tell what part of the specimen it represents. Conversely, excessive empty area can make fine structures disappear at normal viewing size.

Build technical clarity into the clip

Focus and resolution

  • Keep the structure carrying the scientific point in focus for the needed duration.
  • Review the exported file, not only the original capture; resizing and compression can erase small features.
  • Check legibility on an ordinary display at the likely submission or judging size.

Exposure and dynamic range

  • Preserve detail in both bright and dark regions where those regions matter to interpretation.
  • Avoid clipping that turns a fluorescent structure into a featureless white block or a background into unusable black.
  • Use consistent brightness through a sequence unless a documented acquisition change is itself relevant.

Artifacts and motion

  • Look for dust, dead pixels, stitching seams, drift, flicker, compression blocks, and reconstruction errors.
  • Distinguish genuine biological or physical movement from stage movement, focus drift, or processing instability.
  • Do not add transitions or effects that make the observed motion ambiguous.

NUS’s references to resolution, dynamic range, and artifacts support these checks. They remain practical guidance rather than a claim that every competition scores each item separately.

Use composition and timing to direct attention

Start with a readable first frame

The opening moment should establish the subject quickly. A short pause or gradual reveal can work when it helps orientation; an unexplained title card or a long empty lead-in spends scarce viewing time without conveying evidence.

Control speed and duration

Choose a playback speed that lets a judge perceive the process. Fast motion can hide a transient event, while very slow motion can make ordinary drift look like the central discovery. If a contest imposes a limit, edit for the strongest continuous segment rather than forcing an entire experiment into the available seconds.

Compose for the relevant structure

Place the feature of interest where it remains visible during movement. Leave enough surrounding context to show relationships, but remove distracting regions that compete with the subject. These choices serve the MSA’s composition emphasis and Nikon’s visual-impact criterion.

Write a caption that a judge can use

Cover the required facts

MSA instructions ask for scientific significance, acquisition details, and post-acquisition processing when applicable, along with a short title and descriptive caption. NUS CBIS requests information such as who prepared the sample, who performed imaging, the instrument, laboratory, principal investigator, institution or department, and an informative and imaginative caption.

Prepare those fields before uploading, then copy the requirements for the actual form rather than assuming one contest’s fields apply to another.

Explain interpretation, not just appearance

A useful caption identifies the specimen or process, states what the viewer should notice, and describes the imaging method and relevant processing accurately. If colors represent channels or a reconstruction rather than natural appearance, say so. Do not imply that a visual effect is a measured feature.

Preserve provenance

Keep a record of the sample, instrument, objective or acquisition setup when the form requests it, operators, laboratory, and the steps used after capture. Accurate provenance makes unusual imagery credible and allows the judging panel to understand what was acquired versus reconstructed.

Follow processing and manipulation rules exactly

Processing limits are competition-specific. MSA asks for a processing description when applicable. NUS CBIS 2026 permitted only specified adjustments, including LUTs, 3D lighting, and minor brightness- or contrast-type adjustments, and otherwise disallowed digital manipulation. That restriction applies to the 2026 NUS rules; it is not a universal standard.

Before export, make a short processing log: acquisition software, reconstruction steps, color mapping, brightness or contrast changes, denoising, cropping, speed changes, and any edits. If a rule is unclear about a step, ask the competition organizer or omit the step rather than conceal it. Never use post-processing to manufacture structures, remove inconvenient evidence, or create motion that was not present in the data.

A submission workflow that reduces avoidable losses

  1. Choose the contest and read its current rules. Record the closing date, eligible entrants, clip or file limits, accepted formats, processing restrictions, rights language, and required forms.
  2. State the scientific point. Write one sentence naming the specimen or process and the observation the judge should notice.
  3. Select the strongest sequence. Prefer a segment in which motion or reconstruction adds information and the subject remains understandable.
  4. Review at normal viewing size. Check focus, resolution, dynamic range, artifacts, drift, flicker, compression, and whether the important detail survives export.
  5. Refine composition and timing. Remove empty lead-ins, distracting regions, and effects that compete with the observation. Set a speed that preserves perception.
  6. Document acquisition and processing. Gather sample, instrument, operator, laboratory, investigator, method, and processing details requested by the form.
  7. Write and proof the caption. Include the scientific significance and a clear description of what appears on screen; disclose color keys or reconstruction choices when relevant.
  8. Validate the file and rights. Open the final file on another system, confirm the format and duration, and complete any permission or release form. MSA’s video instructions, for example, require a permission form and cap clips at 15 seconds.
  9. Submit the exact final version. Keep the submitted file and caption together with the processing log so that later questions can be answered consistently.

How to compare two competitions before entering

When deciding where a clip fits, compare the dimensions below instead of assuming that a prestigious contest uses the same test as another.

Question Why it matters
What scientific or informational explanation is required? A contest may emphasize research significance, viewer information, or both.
How are aesthetics described? Look for terms such as visual impact, composition, artistic creativity, or suitability.
What technical qualities are named? Check whether the rules mention resolution, dynamic range, artifacts, technical proficiency, or other limits.
Is the caption judged? NUS explicitly includes caption content and quality; MSA requests extensive explanatory fields.
Are videos eligible, and what are the limits? Duration, file format, media type, and whether reconstructed data are accepted can eliminate an otherwise strong entry.
What processing and rights disclosures are required? Processing permissions and permission forms vary; a file acceptable in one contest may violate another’s rules.

Common ways strong footage loses impact

The image is attractive but unexplained

Fix: Name the subject and the observation in the title and caption, and give the opening frames enough context to orient the viewer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Processing overwhelms the evidence

Fix: Use color and lighting to separate structures without hiding their relationships, and disclose the adjustments required by the rules.

Technical defects look like biology

Fix: Inspect for drift, flicker, clipping, stitching errors, and compression after export. If an artifact cannot be corrected without changing the evidence, choose another sequence.

The clip ignores the competition’s limits

Fix: Treat duration, format, permission, and manipulation requirements as eligibility conditions, not optional polish. MSA’s 15-second ceiling and accepted-format list illustrate why this check must happen before upload.

The caption omits the people and method

Fix: Prepare the contributor, instrument, laboratory, sample, and acquisition details requested by the specific form. Do not copy NUS’s 2026 fields into another contest unless that contest asks for them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final pre-submission checklist

  • The subject and one scientific observation are understandable without personal explanation.
  • Motion or reconstruction contributes information rather than decoration alone.
  • The important structures remain focused and visible at normal display size.
  • Brightness, contrast, and dynamic range preserve relevant detail.
  • Artifacts, drift, flicker, and compression have been checked in the exported file.
  • The title and caption accurately describe the subject, method, significance, and permitted processing.
  • All requested sample, operator, instrument, laboratory, investigator, institution, and rights details are present.
  • The final file meets the current contest’s duration, format, media, processing, and permission rules.

The recurring judging dimensions are clear, but their order and weight are not universal. Treat scientific communication, originality, technical execution, visual design, and caption quality as connected parts of one submission, then let the current rules of the chosen competition decide the final constraints.
