1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe safest workplace uses for a humanoid robot are tightly defined, repetitive tasks in a controlled area—such as moving parts, positioning components, or loading a machine—where the complete application has been assessed and safeguarded. There is no universal list of jobs that are automatically safe. A humanoid shape does not make a robot safe around people, and examples of conventional industrial-robot work do not prove that a humanoid system can perform the same task without additional engineering.
Employers must evaluate the robot, end-effector, workpiece, software, surroundings, human interaction, operating conditions, and maintenance activities as one system. The decision should be based on a documented task risk assessment, effective safeguards, trained personnel, and controls that still work when the workplace changes or the robot fails.

Which workplace jobs are realistic candidates?
OSHA describes industrial robots as commonly performing material handling, assembly, welding, machine-tool loading and unloading, painting, and spraying. Robots are also used for work that is unsafe, hazardous, highly repetitive, or unpleasant. Those are task categories for industrial robots generally, not a certification that a humanoid robot can safely perform every example. A humanoid candidate must be assessed in its actual configuration, with its actual tool, payload, software and surroundings.
| Candidate task | Why it may suit a humanoid form | Conditions required before approval |
|---|---|---|
| Moving parts or materials between stations | Walking or reaching could let one platform serve several nearby work positions. | Verify load stability, route control, speed limits, obstacle detection, stopping distance and protection from dropped loads. |
| Repetitive assembly or positioning | Two arms and human-scale reach can help with repeated placement, fastening or presentation tasks. | Define the exact sequence, tool forces, pinch points, quality checks and safe human access for replenishment or intervention. |
| Loading and unloading a machine tool | The robot can repeat a predictable transfer between a fixture and a machine. | Interlock the machine and robot, prevent access during hazardous motion, control residual energy and validate recovery after jams. |
| Welding | A robot can keep a torch on a programmed path and remove a person from arc, fume and heat exposure. | Use process-specific guarding, fire and fume controls, protection from hot workpieces, and procedures for setup, teaching and maintenance. |
| Painting or spraying | Automation can reduce exposure to coatings, solvents and repetitive overhead movement. | Control flammable materials, ventilation, ignition sources, overspray, cleaning operations and access to the spray envelope. |
| Repetitive, physically demanding assistance | A robot may help lift, carry or position loads while a worker directs the operation. | Keep the shared task bounded, detect people and objects reliably, limit force and speed, and define who has control at every step. |
The table identifies plausible applications, not approved jobs. The sources reviewed do not establish a broadly certified commercial humanoid deployment for any one of them.

Material movement
Transporting parts between fixed points is often easier to analyze than a task that requires improvisation. The employer still has to account for the weight and shape of the load, the robot’s grasp, floor condition, route crossings, shelves, doors and people entering the path. A load that shifts, breaks or blocks the robot’s sensors can turn a routine transfer into a struck-by or caught-between event.
Assembly and positioning
Assembly is suitable only when the sequence, forces and handoff points are understood. Fingers, fixtures and components can create pinch and crush points even when the robot moves slowly. A risk assessment should cover normal cycles, replenishment, quality inspection, clearing a misaligned part and every situation in which a worker reaches into the cell.
Machine loading and unloading
Machine tending combines robot motion with the machine’s own hazards, such as cutting tools, clamps, heat and stored pressure. Interlocks must prevent a person from entering while either system can move, and the control design must address what happens after a door is opened, a sensor fails or power returns after an interruption.

Welding, painting and spraying
These processes can remove people from intense heat, arc radiation, fumes, solvents and overspray, but they are not automatically low risk. The tool, process and material introduce hazards independent of the robot’s joints. Cleaning, tip changes, paint-line entry and troubleshooting are often more dangerous than automatic production and need their own controls.

Assistance with heavy or repetitive work
NIOSH describes ongoing research on collaborative masonry robots that help workers lift and position heavy concrete masonry units. In that research, the robot follows the mason’s movements, while computer vision is intended to detect people, objects and movement so the system can slow or stop when collision hazards arise. This is a research example, not evidence that a general-purpose humanoid is ready for every construction or material-handling job.
What makes a task safe enough to automate?
Safety is a property of the complete application, not the robot’s appearance. OSHA’s technical guidance calls for an assessment that lists each task, the hazards associated with it, the risks and the suitable controls or safeguards. The assessment should include design, use, programming, operation and maintenance.
Define the operating envelope
Map every position the robot, tool, load or a broken component can reach. Include access points, transfer areas, storage locations and spaces below or behind the robot. Measure stopping distance at the fastest permitted speed and with the heaviest permitted load. If a person can enter the envelope, the design needs a reliable way to prevent hazardous motion or to bring it to a safe state.

Analyze normal and non-routine work
Automatic production is only one part of the job. OSHA reports that accidents often occur during programming, maintenance, testing, setup or adjustment, when workers may be inside the operating envelope. The assessment must therefore cover teaching a new path, clearing a jam, changing an end-effector, recovering from a fault, cleaning, software updates and restarting after an emergency stop.

Control energy and unexpected movement
Servicing requires isolation of electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, thermal, mechanical and gravitational energy. A stopped program is not the same as an isolated machine. Procedures must prevent a restart while someone is exposed and must address stored energy in a raised arm, suspended load, pressurized line or hot process.
Hazards that need explicit safeguards
A humanoid system can combine mobile-robot, industrial-robot and human-machine hazards. The following controls should be addressed in the application design and operating procedures.
| Hazard | How it can arise | Safeguard questions |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected movement | A software fault, recovery routine, communication loss or restart commands motion. | Does the system enter a defined safe state, show its status and require a deliberate, authorized reset? |
| Crush, pinch or caught-between injury | A joint, tool, load or fixture traps a person against a fixed object. | Can access be prevented, forces limited and hazards detected before contact? |
| Struck-by or dropped load | A carried object slips, the robot falls or a person crosses the route. | Are loads secured, routes separated and detection and stopping performance validated with real loads? |
| Tool and process hazards | Welding arcs, blades, hot surfaces, paint, solvents or sharp workpieces cause injury. | Are process controls, ventilation, fire protection and tool-specific guarding independent of motion control? |
| Sensor or communication failure | Dust, rain, glare, poor lighting, network loss or a damaged sensor reduces detection. | Does degraded sensing cause a safe stop rather than continued operation on stale assumptions? |
| Fault recovery | The robot behaves differently after an interruption, collision or protective stop. | Is recovery predictable, supervised and tested for every relevant fault? |
| Battery and stored energy | A mobile platform carries high-energy batteries or remains loaded while powered down. | Are charging, thermal events, isolation, storage and emergency response covered? |
Can humanoid robots work safely alongside people?
They can be designed for a shared task, but proximity is not proof of collaboration safety. A person may approach from a blind spot, carry an object that the vision system does not recognize, or move differently from the training examples. Safe cooperation requires a defined division of control: who starts the task, who may pause it, what speed and force limits apply, and what happens when either party deviates from the expected sequence.
Controls should be tested under the actual lighting, dust, weather, floor reflectivity, clothing, tools and layout. A camera or lidar demonstration in a clean laboratory does not establish performance on a busy shop floor. The employer should document detection limits, minimum separation distances, stop times and the conditions that require the robot to slow, stop or be removed from service.

Why construction and mobile worksites are harder
NIOSH’s 2026 construction-safety bulletin highlights changing work areas, overlapping trades, uneven surfaces, weather, dust, lighting changes and visibility problems. A route that was clear at the start of a shift may be blocked by materials or another crew later. Blind spots, limited visibility, dropped or unstable loads, unexpected equipment movement and caught-in or caught-between hazards become more difficult to control as the site changes.
Fixed barriers or permanent exclusion zones may not provide adequate protection on such sites. Safe deployment also depends on daily coordination, temporary boundaries, traffic planning, inspection of sensors and a process for stopping work when conditions exceed the robot’s validated envelope. Rain, glare, dust or poor lighting can degrade sensing; communication failure, firmware changes or object-recognition limits can produce unexpected behavior. These conditions need explicit operating limits and a supervisor with authority to withdraw the system.

What standards and regulations apply?
OSHA’s Robotics Overview states: “There are currently no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry.” That agency statement does not remove an employer’s duty to protect workers, and it does not turn consensus standards into OSHA regulations. Employers still need to comply with applicable occupational-safety requirements and use recognized engineering practice appropriate to the application and jurisdiction.
ISO 10218-1:2025 is the third edition of the industrial-robot safety standard, published in February 2025. ISO 10218-2:2025 is the companion part covering robot-system integration and applications. Part 1 has important scope exclusions, including service robots in areas accessible to the public, healthcare robots, consumer products, mobile-platform applications and systems for handling or transporting people. It should not be presented as a humanoid-specific rulebook or extended casually to every workplace scenario.
Before deployment, identify the robot’s classification, the applicable national and local rules, the current editions of relevant standards and the responsibilities of the manufacturer, integrator and employer. A qualified safety professional should review the complete documented application.

How to compare two humanoid systems for one job
There is no authoritative basis in the available sources for ranking named humanoid models. Compare systems against the application instead:
- Task and workpiece: payload, center of gravity, grasp reliability, tool hazards and process tolerance.
- Perception: people and obstacle detection under the site’s actual light, dust, weather, layout and clothing conditions.
- Stopping and recovery: stop distance, force limits, restart behavior and handling of sensor, power, network and software faults.
- Workspace: stable cell versus changing floor plan, access control, route separation and emergency access.
- Human factors: training, supervision, communication with other trades and clarity about who controls the task.
- Documentation: risk assessment, validation evidence, maintenance instructions, change-control process and records showing that safeguards were tested.
These dimensions are practical implications of OSHA’s application-risk guidance and NIOSH’s construction hazard descriptions, not a published humanoid certification checklist.
A deployment sequence that reduces avoidable risk
- Describe the task precisely. Specify the workpiece, tool, payload, cycle, speed, locations, people present and every non-routine intervention.
- Map hazards and energy. Identify motion, crush points, process hazards, dropped-load paths, stored energy, batteries, software dependencies and environmental limits.
- Design safeguards. Use guarding, interlocks, separation, speed and force limits, protective stops, isolation procedures, warnings and administrative controls in combination.
- Validate under real conditions. Test the heaviest loads, worst lighting, dust, glare, wet surfaces, communication interruptions, sensor degradation and foreseeable faults.
- Train and authorize personnel. Confirm competency for operation, programming, integration, maintenance and emergency response before assigning duties.
- Control changes. Reassess when the robot, end-effector, software, payload, route, layout, lighting or surrounding trade changes.
- Monitor and stop when necessary. Record near misses, protective stops, faults and changing conditions; suspend work when the validated envelope no longer applies.
Bottom line for employers
Humanoid robots are most defensible as workplace tools for bounded, repetitive or hazardous tasks where the environment can be controlled and the robot’s behavior can be verified. Material transfer, repetitive assembly, machine tending, welding, painting, spraying and heavy-load assistance are candidate applications drawn from established industrial-robot functions, not guarantees of humanoid safety.
The decisive question is not whether the robot looks human. It is whether the employer can demonstrate, for one defined application, that hazards have been identified, safeguards work during routine and non-routine activity, people are competent, and the system fails safely when conditions change. If those conditions cannot be demonstrated, the task is not ready for deployment.
