IT administrators can manage selected Apple Intelligence features on supervised Apple devices by deploying Apple’s dedicated Apple Intelligence declarative configuration. The documented minimum is iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS 26.4, or visionOS 26.4, and Apple lists Automated Device Enrollment plus Device Enrollment on Mac as supported enrollment methods.
The important boundary is ownership and enrollment: Apple does not list User Enrollment for this configuration. A personally owned device enrolled through the BYOD User Enrollment path therefore cannot be assumed to accept the same feature controls. Before a broad rollout, verify that your MDM or UEM service implements the exact settings, then test delivery, user-visible behavior, status reporting, and recovery on representative devices.

What the Apple Intelligence configuration does
Apple’s Apple Intelligence declarative configuration is a feature-policy payload for Apple devices. Apple describes it as a way to control which Apple Intelligence features are available, rather than as a single master switch for every AI-related service. The settings include major creation and writing features, selected app functions, and options that constrain particular processing paths.

The policy is part of declarative device management: an administrator declares the desired state, the device reports status, and the state can be maintained even when the device is temporarily offline. The practical result is different from sending a one-time command and hoping it remains in effect.

Minimum operating-system versions
| Platform | Minimum version listed by Apple |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iOS 26.4 |
| iPad | iPadOS 26.4 |
| Mac device enrollment | macOS 26.4 |
| Mac user enrollment | macOS 26.4 |
| Apple Vision Pro | visionOS 26.4 |
These are configuration prerequisites, not a promise that every Apple Intelligence feature runs on every model. Hardware availability, regional language support, account state, and Apple’s own feature requirements still apply separately.
Prerequisites: supervision and enrollment
Apple marks the Apple Intelligence configuration as requiring supervision. Supervision is therefore a gating condition: an administrator should inventory enrollment state before writing a policy or troubleshooting a missing setting.
Enrollment methods Apple lists
- Automated Device Enrollment: the organization assigns eligible devices to its management service so they enroll during setup and can be supervised without relying on a user to opt in.
- Device Enrollment on Mac: Apple lists this Mac enrollment method as supported for the configuration.
Apple does not list User Enrollment as a supported method for this configuration. That omission matters for personally owned devices. User Enrollment is Apple’s BYOD path, designed to separate managed work data from personal data and to limit administrator actions such as remotely erasing the entire personal device. It should not be treated as an alternative way to obtain the same Apple Intelligence controls.

- Platform and exact operating-system build.
- Organization-owned or personally owned status.
- Supervised or unsupervised state.
- Enrollment method and management-service record.
- Whether the device is in the pilot group or production scope.
- Language, region, and account conditions that could affect feature availability.
Use this inventory to split policy scope. A supervised, organization-owned iPhone on iOS 26.4 is a different deployment target from a personally owned iPhone using User Enrollment, even when both appear in the same directory.
Which Apple Intelligence features an administrator can control
The configuration is granular. Apple documents controls for the following areas:

Many keys are named as permissions such as “Allow” a feature. Read the configuration table’s behavior carefully: setting an allow key to disallow is the action that turns the feature off. Do not represent every entry as an independent on/off control unless Apple’s table defines it that way.
Creation and visual features
Genmoji, Image Playground, Image Wand, Personalized Handwriting Results, and Visual Intelligence can be included in a prohibition policy where the organization does not want those capabilities available. Document the business reason for each restriction; a blanket ban can remove useful accessibility or creative workflows that another department needs.

Writing and app-specific features
Writing Tools is a separate control from the app-specific settings. Calendar and Reminders Natural Language Editing, Mail Smart Replies and Summary, Notes Transcription and Transcription Summary, and Safari Summary are listed as app-level choices. This lets a team distinguish, for example, between allowing Writing Tools while disallowing automatic summaries in Mail, subject to the exact keys exposed by the management service.
On-device-only processing options
The configuration can force on-device-only Dictation and on-device-only Translation. These settings address where those functions process requests; they do not automatically turn off every Apple Intelligence feature or every network connection made by an app. State the scope in the policy documentation so users do not interpret an on-device-only option as a universal offline guarantee.
Apple Intelligence Report
Apple lists Apple Intelligence Report as a configurable item. Treat it as its own setting and explain to stakeholders what the chosen value means in the Apple configuration and in the MDM console. It should not be presented as a complete enterprise audit log unless Apple’s current documentation explicitly says so.

Apple Intelligence versus external intelligence
Apple documents an External Intelligence declarative configuration separately from the Apple Intelligence configuration. The two should not be collapsed into one policy.
The Apple Intelligence configuration governs the listed feature-level controls. The external-intelligence configuration addresses a different class of integration. Blocking or restricting an external integration does not, by itself, prove that all Apple Intelligence capabilities are disabled. Conversely, turning off a listed Apple Intelligence feature does not establish that every external service path is blocked.
When creating a compliance standard, name the configuration you are evaluating, record its supported operating-system versions, and verify the corresponding key in the MDM console. Keep separate change records for the two payloads.
How to deploy the policy safely
- Define the policy outcome. Write a plain-language list of features to allow, features to turn off, and any on-device-only requirements. Map each outcome to the exact Apple configuration key.
- Segment the fleet. Filter devices by platform, OS build, ownership, supervision, and enrollment method. Exclude unsupervised and User Enrollment devices from a payload that requires supervision.
- Confirm service support. Read the current documentation for your MDM or UEM service. Apple says not all configurations are available in every device-management service and that developers implement settings differently.
- Create a pilot group. Include each platform and OS version in production scope, at least one device per relevant enrollment path, and users who exercise the affected apps.
- Deploy declaratively. Publish the Apple Intelligence configuration through the service’s declarative-management workflow rather than assuming a legacy profile exposes every key.
- Check device status. Confirm that the service reports the declaration as accepted, active, and current. A successful server-side save is not proof that the device applied the setting.
- Verify the user-visible result. On the device, check the affected feature or app. Test both a prohibited function and an allowed function so an overly broad payload is caught.
- Check reporting and recovery. Confirm that the service can show compliance, that a changed declaration reaches the device, and that removing or revising the policy restores the intended state.
- Expand in stages. Move from pilot to a small production cohort, monitor failures by OS and enrollment state, then continue only when the behavior and reporting match the written policy.
What to verify in an MDM or UEM service
Provider support is not uniform. Apple’s device-management service guidance says these services send configurations, profiles, and commands; receive status; monitor compliance; and can remotely lock or wipe devices. It also recommends evaluating service support and trying candidate services with a small group of test devices.

- Does the console expose Apple’s current Apple Intelligence declarative configuration, including the feature keys your policy needs?
- Is the payload available on iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 where applicable?
- Does the service require a supervised enrollment record before it will send the declaration?
- How are “allow” values represented, and how does the console show that a feature is turned off?
- Can the service report declaration status and device-level errors?
- How does it handle a device that is offline when the desired state changes?
- Can administrators target organization-owned devices without accidentally including User Enrollment devices?
- Does the service separately support Apple’s External Intelligence configuration?
Keep the provider’s answer and the tested console behavior in your change record. A vendor’s generic Apple-management badge is not evidence that every Apple Intelligence key is implemented.
BYOD boundaries and privacy
Personally owned devices need a separate decision framework. Apple describes User Enrollment as a BYOD method that keeps managed and personal data separate and limits actions such as a full remote wipe. Because User Enrollment is not listed for the Apple Intelligence configuration, an organization should not promise employees that it can turn off the same feature set on their personally owned device.
Options for a BYOD policy include restricting access to sensitive work systems, publishing user guidance, or requiring an organization-owned supervised device for roles that need feature-level enforcement. Do not label a recommendation as technical enforcement when it is only an acceptable-use rule.
Apple’s enterprise device-management description says management cannot access personal information such as personal email, messages, browser history, or device location. Attribute that boundary to Apple’s management framework and explain what your own service collects for compliance reporting. The two are related but not identical: a service may receive enrollment, declaration, and status data without receiving the personal content listed above.

Apple’s Apple Intelligence Report documentation distinguishes requests processed on the device from requests processed by Private Cloud Compute. That distinction helps explain the execution environment for a request, but it is not proof that an organization receives a complete record of every relevant event.

Use precise language in security and privacy materials:
- “On-device-only Dictation” or “on-device-only Translation” describes the setting applied to those functions.
- “Private Cloud Compute” identifies a processing environment described by Apple for applicable requests.
- “The management service reports declaration status” describes administrative telemetry.
- None of these statements alone means that IT can read a user’s prompts, messages, generated images, or complete Apple Intelligence activity history.
Troubleshooting deployment failures
The setting is missing from the console
Check whether the service has implemented Apple’s current declarative configuration. Confirm that you are using a declaration workflow, not an older profile editor, and ask the provider which product release supports the key. Do not substitute an unrelated external-intelligence setting.
The declaration is rejected by the device
Verify the OS build, supervision state, enrollment method, and platform. A device below 26.4, an unsupervised device, or a device enrolled through an unsupported method can fail before feature testing begins.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The declaration is accepted but the feature still appears
Check the exact allow/disallow value, the affected app’s own availability conditions, and whether the device has received the latest declaration. Test after the device reports the declaration as active. Capture the device’s OS version and the service’s status record before escalating.
Only some devices change
Compare the successful and failing devices by ownership, supervision, enrollment method, OS build, region, and language. Provider implementations can vary by platform, so a working iPhone result does not establish that the same key works on Mac or visionOS.
The policy cannot be rolled back cleanly
Use a staged change: first remove the restrictive value from the pilot declaration, confirm the device reports the revised state, and then expand. Keep a documented recovery declaration rather than relying on an emergency manual change on each device.
Policy choices by deployment model
| Deployment model | Supervision and enrollment | Apple Intelligence policy implication | Privacy boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organization-owned, Automated Device Enrollment | Supervision required; supported method listed by Apple | Eligible for the Apple Intelligence declarative configuration when the OS and service support it | Managed under the organization’s device-management policy |
| Mac using Device Enrollment | Supervision required; supported Mac method listed by Apple | Eligible when macOS 26.4 and the provider implementation meet the prerequisites | Managed Mac controls apply within the enrollment scope |
| Personally owned, User Enrollment | User Enrollment is not listed for this configuration | Do not promise feature-level enforcement through this payload | Managed and personal data are separated; full-device actions are limited |
Rollout checklist
- Record the exact Apple configuration version and publication date used for the policy.
- Confirm every target device is on the required OS version.
- Confirm supervision and supported enrollment before assignment.
- List each feature key and the intended allow or disallow result.
- Keep Apple Intelligence and External Intelligence declarations separate.
- Verify the MDM provider’s implementation and reporting.
- Pilot on every platform and enrollment state in scope.
- Test an affected feature, an unaffected feature, status reporting, and rollback.
- Document what the service can see and what Apple says remains personal.
- Recheck Apple’s current Platform Deployment documentation before changing production policy, because configuration details are version-sensitive.
Can IT manage Apple Intelligence on supervised Apple devices?
Yes, when the device meets Apple’s prerequisites and the management service implements the configuration. The enforceable scope is the feature list Apple documents; it is not a guarantee that every AI-related function on the device is controlled by one payload.
