Working at a submarine shipyard does not require one standard background or one universal license. Shipyards hire electricians, electronics mechanics, shipfitters, welders, pipefitters, machinery mechanics and other specialists for construction, overhaul, installation, testing and support. You can enter through a naval or employer-run apprenticeship, apply for an advertised skilled-trades vacancy, or bring relevant experience from another industrial setting. The exact education, experience, screening and work assignment are set by the individual employer and posting.

The most reliable way to qualify is to choose a trade, build its practical fundamentals, and then follow the current apprenticeship announcement or vacancy for the yard and location you want.

What jobs are available at a submarine shipyard?

“Submarine shipyard job” describes an industry, not a single occupation. A federal naval shipyard may employ the same broad trades as a private shipbuilder, but the work scope, hiring authority and qualification language can differ. NAVSEA’s skilled-trades information lists electricians, shipfitters, welders, pipefitters, marine machinery mechanics and electronics mechanics among its career fields. Its Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard apprenticeship descriptions provide more specific examples.

Trade or role Typical work described by the sources What to verify in the posting
Electrician Install, operate, test, troubleshoot and maintain shipboard electrical systems. Pearl Harbor assignments may include shop work, surface craft, crane electrical systems, or submarine non-nuclear and nuclear electrical work. Required electrical knowledge, experience level, work location and the exact systems covered.
Electronics mechanic Troubleshoot, repair and test electronic systems such as communications, sonar, radar and fire-control equipment. Which systems, instruments and test methods the vacancy names.
Shipfitter Structural-shop work that shapes, fits and installs ship structures and components. Trade-specific qualification standards, drawings or fabrication skills and the current work assignment.
Welder Structural and other shipyard welding associated with fabrication, repair or installation. Processes, weld qualifications, experience requirements and any employer testing.
Pipefitter or insulator Pipe-shop work installing, aligning, repairing or insulating shipboard piping and related systems. The piping systems, materials, drawings and qualification level listed by the employer.
Machinery mechanic Mechanical installation, maintenance, alignment or repair. Pearl Harbor lists production machinery mechanics among its pipe-shop occupations. Whether the role concerns ship machinery, production equipment or both.

These descriptions are examples, not a promise that every yard offers every trade. NAVSEA directs experienced candidates to search its current skilled-trades openings, while local apprenticeship pages publish their own occupations and dates. Treat the live announcement as the controlling document.

Skills employers look for in each trade

Shipyard work rewards people who can follow technical information precisely, work safely around other trades and learn in a structured, hands-on environment. NAVSEA describes skilled-trades work as requiring people who work safely and efficiently, but it does not establish one universal physical test, certification list or clearance rule for every job. Those details belong to the specific vacancy.

Electrical skills

An electrical applicant should be ready to discuss wiring, electrical controls, equipment installation, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance. Be able to explain how you read a schematic, isolate a fault, verify that a circuit is de-energized when required, and document a repair. Shipboard work can move between a shop and a vessel, so the posting may distinguish installation, testing, maintenance or repair experience.

Electronics skills

Electronics mechanics diagnose equipment rather than simply replace parts. Relevant foundations include signal paths, connectors, power supplies, measurement, fault isolation and controlled testing. The Pearl Harbor descriptions identify communications, sonar, radar and fire-control systems as examples. A posting may emphasize a particular system family, so match your examples to its wording instead of presenting every electronics discipline as interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shipfitting and welding skills

Shipfitters and welders work from drawings, dimensions and fit-up requirements. Useful evidence includes fabrication or repair projects, accurate layout, distortion control, joint preparation, quality checks and the ability to coordinate with adjacent trades. Do not assume that a general welding credential automatically satisfies a naval-yard qualification; read the employer’s current requirements and any stated test or process.

Pipe and insulation skills

Pipefitters must interpret routing and dimensions, prepare and align components, and install or repair systems to the specified standard. Insulators work with the materials and installation methods named by the yard. Safety, housekeeping and careful control of components matter because several trades may work in a confined or changing area at once.

Machinery and mechanical skills

Machinery mechanics may install, align, maintain or repair production equipment or shipboard machinery, depending on the job. Emphasize measurement, tolerances, bearings, drives, lubrication, mechanical drawings and systematic troubleshooting only when you can support those claims with your actual experience. The title “mechanic” alone does not identify the equipment or level of responsibility.

Skills shared by all trades

  • Reading drawings, procedures, work instructions and technical measurements.
  • Working safely and efficiently while coordinating with other crafts.
  • Using a disciplined troubleshooting process and recording what was tested.
  • Learning classroom theory and applying it during supervised hands-on work.
  • Following the exact quality, documentation and conduct rules in the employer’s announcement.

Apprenticeships: the main entry route for beginners

NAVSEA describes its apprenticeships as tuition-free college-level academic and trade-theory classes combined with hands-on training. Its overview says apprenticeship programs are offered at each of four naval shipyards. NAVSEA summarizes the model this way: “Several NAVSEA locations offer apprenticeships in these career fields, combining classroom instruction with hands-on training to sharpen your skills and lay the foundation for a life-long career.” The current program page is at NAVSEA’s apprenticeships overview.

“Tuition-free” describes the academic and trade-theory instruction in that overview; it does not establish a universal wage, benefits package, age rule or selection process. Check the local announcement for those terms. NAVSEA also cautions applicants indirectly through its location-specific pages: the trades offered and application dates can change.

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard examples

The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Apprentice Program lists structural-shop occupations such as sheet-metal mechanic, shipfitter and welder. Its pipe-shop examples include insulator, pipefitter, electrician and production machinery mechanic.

The electrician description is broader than a single submarine specialty. Assignments may include shop work, surface craft, crane electrical work, or submarine non-nuclear and nuclear electrical work. That wording means an apprentice should not assume that applying to an electrician program guarantees a particular vessel, system or nuclear assignment; the yard determines placement and current openings.

Employer-operated training

The Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding is an employer-linked option, not a prerequisite for every submarine-yard job. Its electrician program says apprentices learn to install, operate and test shipboard electrical systems while taking electrical-theory courses alongside on-the-job training. This illustrates how a shipbuilder can combine classroom instruction with supervised production work. Other employers may use different trades, schedules and selection steps.

How an experienced applicant should approach a posting

Apprenticeship is not the only route. NAVSEA’s skilled-trades page invites candidates to search current openings. The reviewed sources do not establish that all jobs require prior experience or that all jobs waive it. For each vacancy, follow its own qualification statement and application instructions.

  1. Pick a target trade. Decide whether your evidence is strongest in electrical, electronics, structural fabrication, welding, pipe, insulation or machinery work.
  2. Read the complete announcement. Record the location, employer, closing date, qualification level, schedule, required documents and any stated examination or screening step.
  3. Translate your experience into trade language. Describe the equipment, drawings, measurements, tests, repairs and safety procedures you actually performed. Avoid broad claims such as “worked on submarines” without naming the task.
  4. Separate required from preferred items. If the posting lists a credential, experience threshold or other condition as mandatory, do not assume an apprenticeship substitutes for it unless the announcement says so.
  5. Apply through the named channel. Federal, employer-operated and contractor applications can use different systems. A résumé sent to the wrong channel is not an application.
  6. Prepare for practical discussion. Be ready to explain a troubleshooting sequence, a quality check, a safety decision and how you learned a new procedure. Use examples from your own work, school or supervised training.

Do you need Navy nuclear training to work on submarines?

No universal civilian requirement is established by these sources. Civilian shipyard apprenticeships and military nuclear training are separate pathways.

The Navy’s Electrician’s Mate (Nuclear) career page describes a military route for serving on nuclear-powered vessels, including a six-month course covering naval nuclear-plant principles and systems. That is training for a Navy rating and military assignment. It should not be presented as a prerequisite for applying to a civilian shipyard electrician, electronics, pipe, welding or machinery vacancy.

A civilian posting may identify nuclear work, non-nuclear work or both, as the Pearl Harbor electrician description does. Read the employer’s exact language for any job-specific training, access or screening requirement rather than inferring it from the word “submarine.”

What the work environment demands

Submarine construction and maintenance involve tightly controlled procedures and many interdependent trades. Even where a source does not specify a physical-demand test or security requirement, applicants should expect the employer to evaluate whether they can follow instructions, work safely, maintain quality and learn unfamiliar processes. The practical question is not whether you possess every shipyard skill on day one; it is whether your current trade foundation and learning record fit the role’s stated requirements.

Apprentices should expect classroom theory to connect directly to supervised work. Experienced hires should expect their prior skills to be mapped to the yard’s procedures and qualification system. Neither path eliminates the need to follow local rules.

Tools and technical preparation

Bring demonstrated competence, not a shopping list. The Pearl Harbor electronics description identifies multimeters among equipment used in electronics troubleshooting. That makes a multimeter a role-specific example of test equipment, not a universal purchase requirement for applicants. Do not buy personal tools or assume they are permitted until the employer says what it supplies and what its safety policy allows.

Before applying, review the fundamentals that your trade uses: electrical measurement and schematics for electrical roles; signal tracing and controlled testing for electronics; layout, fit-up and drawing interpretation for structural trades; alignment and tolerances for machinery; and routing, preparation and joint integrity for pipe work. Use school, documented work samples or supervised projects to demonstrate those abilities.

How to compare shipyard opportunities

Decision factor Questions to ask
Trade Is the opening electrical, electronics, structural/welding, pipe, insulation or machinery work?
Entry route Is it an apprenticeship with classroom and hands-on training, or a vacancy seeking existing experience?
Employer and location Is it a federal naval shipyard, an employer-operated school, or another submarine-industrial-base employer?
Work scope Does the announcement describe construction, overhaul, shipboard installation, shop work or support work?
Current qualifications What does this specific notice require, and which details are merely preferred?
Schedule and selection What dates, shifts, tests, documents and application steps does the live notice specify?

There is no reliable universal answer for these fields across every yard. Compare the actual announcements, not the occupation title alone.

Finding legitimate programs and current openings

Start with official employer and Navy pages. NAVSEA’s apprenticeship overview and skilled-trades page explain the federal routes; local pages such as Pearl Harbor publish the trades and postings for that yard. The Apprentice School provides an example of an employer-run program. The Department of the Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base Workforce Development page describes workforce initiatives and identifies BuildSubmarines.com as a hub connecting job seekers with companies, training programs and career pathways.

Use those pages to locate a current announcement, then verify every requirement in the vacancy itself. Program descriptions can remain online after a cohort closes, and trade lists, dates and eligibility can change.

What placement statistics do—and do not—tell you

The Department of the Navy workforce-development page reports more than 1,400 program completers and more than 90 percent placed in defense-industrial-base careers. The available page excerpt does not identify a reporting year or period, so these figures should not be read as current annual placement rates or as a guarantee for an individual applicant. They indicate that structured workforce programs have produced substantial numbers of completers and placements, while the result for any applicant still depends on the program and vacancy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every submarine job is nuclear. Electrical assignments can be non-nuclear or nuclear, and many shipyard trades never involve nuclear systems.
  • Treating military training as a civilian prerequisite. The Navy’s nuclear electrician route is a military career path, not a blanket civilian hiring rule.
  • Relying on a generic résumé. Name the trade, equipment, measurements, drawings and repairs that match the announcement.
  • Assuming one yard’s apprenticeship applies everywhere. NAVSEA programs, Pearl Harbor listings and employer schools have location-specific occupations and dates.
  • Inventing a requirement from a job title. Do not infer a clearance, physical test, certification or personal-tool requirement unless the current employer notice states it.
  • Ignoring the closing date or application channel. A strong qualification cannot correct an incomplete or late application.

A practical decision framework

Choose an apprenticeship when

You need structured instruction, want to build a trade foundation and can meet the local program’s eligibility and selection rules. NAVSEA and employer-run schools show that classroom theory can be paired with supervised hands-on work.

Apply directly when

Your documented experience aligns with a live skilled-trades vacancy and you can meet its stated qualifications without assuming an apprenticeship will substitute for them.

Build more preparation first when

You cannot yet identify a trade, read the basic technical information it uses or describe a safe troubleshooting or fabrication process. A relevant technical course, supervised project or entry-level industrial role can give you concrete evidence before you target a shipyard opening.

The essential qualification is fit with a specific trade and announcement. Submarine shipyards need many kinds of specialists, and the strongest route is the one that matches your existing skills while giving you a credible way to learn the yard’s procedures.
