Transporting a nuclear reactor to the Moon means landing and deploying an integrated power plant—not just a reactor core—and then connecting it to its users. NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy announced a 2030 development goal in January 2026; that is a program target, not evidence that a lunar reactor has been built, launched, landed, or installed.
What has to go to the Moon
A surface fission power system needs more than the reactor. NASA concept work includes the reactor, power-conversion equipment, heat rejection, and power-management and distribution hardware. These components must be packaged together, secured for launch and landing, and made compatible with the cargo lander and whatever equipment will unload or move them.

The distinction matters: a lander that can accommodate the reactor does not automatically accommodate the full power plant, deployment equipment, and the hardware needed to deliver electricity to a habitat or other users.

How the current program target differs from a finished design
In January 2026, NASA and DOE announced a renewed development partnership with a goal of developing a lunar surface reactor by 2030. NASA described work that includes developing and fueling a reactor, obtaining authorization, and preparing it for launch. The agencies describe a system intended to operate for years without refueling and supply continuous power regardless of sunlight or temperature. These are plans and intended capabilities; the announcement does not establish a finalized flight design or completed mission.

DOE says the demonstration is expected to produce up to 40 kWe and operate autonomously to match demand. Program descriptions of the demonstration period have varied by date:
| Program description | What it says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| DOE, 2026 | At least a one-year initial demonstration | An expected initial demonstration period, not an achieved operating record. |
| NASA, 2024 project update | One demonstration year followed by nine operational years | An earlier program description, not proof of a ten-year lunar operating plan being completed. |
NASA’s 2024 project material described a 40 kWe-class concept and an early-2030s launch-pad target. The later January 2026 announcement gives the current public schedule goal: 2030. Neither date by itself confirms a selected reactor architecture, lander, or installation sequence.
How the payload could reach its operating site
The system must first survive launch vibration and the loads of lunar touchdown. DOE identifies both launch and landing vibration as design requirements for space surface power systems. Protection cannot be limited to the reactor core: the coolant system, controls, power-conversion equipment, and supporting structure also have to remain functional through the trip.

One NASA concept for a 40 kWe system assumed a large crew-class cargo lander and a six-wheel rover chassis pre-deployed on the surface. It studied a sled for lowering payloads from the chassis to the ground. This was a conceptual architecture; the sources do not identify it as the selected flight lander or deployment method. A different NASA deployability study considered repurposing a pressurized rover chassis to transport power-system components. Both studies rely on assumed lander and rover capabilities, not demonstrated lunar cargo handling.
Moving the plant after touchdown may be necessary to put it at a useful distance from crews and equipment. In the deployability study, a rover-based approach could place the system at least one kilometre from users. The 10 kWe concept could be moved as one unit; the 40 kWe system required several rover trips. The transport chassis itself may need to arrive earlier than the reactor components, adding a deployment dependency.
Deployment approaches trade shielding against transport and wiring
A NASA 40 kWe concept paper compared placing the reactor close to users with transporting it to a remote operating location. The study selected one kilometre as a representative separation distance and considered high-voltage transmission to reduce conductor mass. Neither placement is established as the final flight arrangement.

| Approach | Potential advantage | Work and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Near users, with burial or cover | Shorter power connections and less need to move the plant across the surface. | Could require shielding and construction, including preparing a hole and covering the reactor. The sources do not establish the excavation method or its final mass. |
| Remote placement | Greater separation from users can reduce shielding demands in the studied concept. | Requires surface transport, deployment equipment, and a longer power link, with added cable, connectors, conversion, and power-management hardware. |
Distance is not a free safety margin: it shifts some of the burden from shielding and construction to rover logistics and electrical infrastructure. A NASA technical design-trade paper published in 2025 listed a goal of less than 5 rem per year at one kilometre. That is a Phase 1 design requirement, not a measured dose from an operating lunar reactor.
How power would travel from a remote reactor
For its one-kilometre, 40 kWe remote-deployment concept, the 2022 NASA study used ±2,800 VDC transmission. That is a study parameter, not a final system specification. Higher voltage can reduce conductor mass for a given transmission task, but the cable is only one part of the link: it also has to be deployed, connected, protected, and interfaced with equipment that converts and manages power for users.
The more remote the plant, the more the installation plan depends on getting that distribution equipment to the surface and connecting it reliably. The concept papers do not establish a final cable route, connector design, or selected user interface.

Why lunar surface power is designed for darkness and autonomy
DOE describes lunar nights as lasting about 14 Earth days and says solar power at the south pole cannot provide sufficient sustained power for extended missions. Fission is intended to complement solar power with steady electrical output when sunlight is unavailable or insufficient, rather than relying on sunlight alone.
That role makes reliable unattended operation central to the design. DOE describes autonomous operation that matches energy demand; NASA’s earlier concept material aimed at operation over a decade without human intervention. In practice, the system must manage startup, control, demand changes, and fault response without depending on routine onsite maintenance. It must also endure lunar temperature extremes, in addition to the launch and touchdown vibration it faces before operations begin.

| Figure | Context and qualification |
|---|---|
| Up to 40 kWe | DOE’s 2026 expected demonstration output; NASA’s 2024 project account described a 40 kWe-class initial concept. |
| Under 6 metric tons | NASA’s 2024 initial reactor mass target. A separate 40 kWe conceptual design exceeded its 6,000 kg goal while still fitting the assumed cargo lander volume; that study result is not a final project mass. |
| At least 1 kilometre | Distance from users achievable in the NASA deployability study’s rover-based concepts, recorded by NTRS as a 2022 study. |
| ±2,800 VDC | The NASA 2022 concept paper’s transmission design parameter for a one-kilometre, 40 kWe remote deployment. |
| Less than 5 rem per year at 1 kilometre | A Phase 1 radiation-protection goal in a NASA 2025 design-trade paper, not observed reactor performance. |
The mass comparison shows why packaging and deployment cannot be treated as afterthoughts. The power plant has to fit the lander’s payload envelope, remain within a feasible mass budget, and include whatever chassis, sled, cables, and connection hardware its chosen deployment architecture requires. No source here establishes the final mass or payload configuration.
What has actually been tested
NASA’s Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY) experiment demonstrated heat-transfer technology on Earth in 2018. NASA reported that it performed as expected under normal and off-normal conditions. That test provides relevant ground-test heritage; it was not a test of a lunar-ready 40 kWe system, a launch or landing, or installation on the Moon.
The central gap between concept and installation is therefore a chain of unproven operations: qualifying the integrated plant, fitting it to a cargo lander, surviving launch and touchdown, unloading and possibly relocating its components, deploying power distribution, and starting autonomous operations at the chosen site. The final reactor architecture, lander, route, and installation sequence are not established in the cited program descriptions and studies.
