There is no dependable universal monthly price for running your own Playwright or Puppeteer screenshot service. The real cost includes browser compute, networking and storage, reliability work, and the engineering time needed to keep browsers and infrastructure healthy. To decide whether self-hosting still makes sense, compare those costs with serverless or managed-browser options using the same workload and service expectations.
What belongs in the cost calculation?
Start with the full service, not just the browser process. A useful planning formula is:

Monthly total = compute + storage + network/proxy + monitoring and queueing + paid licenses or services + engineering hours × loaded hourly cost

Browser compute and session duration
Record monthly screenshot volume, actual render-time distribution, memory use, and peak concurrency. Include time spent navigating, waiting for page content, and leaving a browser session open while work is idle. A screenshot count by itself does not describe the compute needed.
For standard AWS Lambda functions, AWS describes billing in terms of requests and execution duration. A meaningful estimate also needs the function’s memory, architecture, region, invocation count, and network setup; the pricing page does not supply a workload-specific Playwright estimate. AWS Lambda pricing.
Network, storage, and delivery
Account for traffic through proxies, outbound data transfer, and any network configuration required to reach private systems. AWS notes that using a VPC may incur additional charges. Image retention and delivery can also add storage or CDN costs, but the reviewed sources do not establish a general amount: estimate them from your own architecture, image sizes, retention period, and delivery pattern.

Operations, reliability, and staff time
Self-hosting means someone owns host sizing, concurrency limits, browser and operating-system updates, monitoring, security patching, queue behavior, retries, and incident response. Browserless describes memory growth in Chrome, CPU and RAM contention between concurrent sessions, security patching, and capacity planning as operational overhead for self-hosted browsers. Browserless documentation on browsers as a service.
Estimate the hours your team actually spends on upkeep and multiply them by the loaded hourly cost of that time. Counting staff effort as free can make a service look cheaper on paper without making it cheaper to operate.
How do self-hosted, serverless, and managed browsers differ?
| Option | What shapes the bill | What your team still owns |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted containers or VMs | Compute, storage, networking, monitoring, and any required license or paid services. The total depends on measured runtime, memory, concurrency, retention, and traffic. | Host sizing, capacity, browser and OS updates, security, monitoring, and reliability. Browserless describes its open-source Docker image as “Free, open-source” and identifies its license as SSPL-1.0; it also lists a commercial license for closed-source products and CI that cannot meet those terms. Check the current license for your use. Browserless self-hosting and licensing. |
| Standard serverless functions | For AWS Lambda, requests and execution duration, with configuration and region affecting the estimate. Networking and ancillary services can add costs. | Workload design, integration, and verification that the selected browser setup meets your compatibility and latency requirements. The cited pricing source does not establish Playwright or Puppeteer cold-start performance. |
| Managed browser service | Provider-specific plan allowances and metered usage, plus any proxy or CAPTCHA-related usage that applies. | Application-level workflow and service selection. Browserless says its managed browser pool handles resource isolation and runtime updates; private deployments and licensed self-hosting have custom pricing. Browserless pricing. |
These options should be compared at an equivalent service level: use the same request volume, render-time distribution, peak concurrency, retention policy, latency expectations, reliability target, and security or data-location requirements. A lower compute bill may not be a lower total cost if it shifts substantial operations work onto your team.

How should you model metered browser usage?
Browserless bills browser time in 30-second increments and rounds a partial increment up: a session open for 31 seconds uses two units. Its documentation says multiple tabs do not multiply browser-time units by themselves, though a longer session still consumes more time. Browserless browser-time terminology.

Its pricing page also lists proxy traffic and successful CAPTCHA solving as separate unit consumers:
- Residential proxy traffic: 6 units per MB.
- Datacenter proxy traffic: 2 units per MB.
- Successful CAPTCHA solve: 10 units.
These are usage-unit rates, not dollar prices; their monetary value depends on the customer’s plan. CAPTCHA usage is relevant only if the workflow legitimately needs that feature, not as an assumed cost of ordinary screenshot capture. Browserless pricing.

How do you estimate your own monthly total?
- Measure the workload. Track monthly request count, render-time distribution, session duration, memory use, peak concurrency, proxy traffic, and screenshot retention.
- Price each deployment model. For self-hosting, estimate compute, storage, networking, monitoring, and any license. For serverless, use the matching request, execution, memory, architecture, region, and network assumptions. For a managed service, apply the relevant plan allowances and usage meters.
- Add operating labor. Count the engineering and on-call work required for updates, capacity, failures, security, and reliability under each option.
- Compare like with like. Apply the same expected and peak load, latency and reliability goals, data-location constraints, and retention policy to every option.
AWS’s Lambda Managed Instances page illustrates why billing examples need context: it gives an example with $0.20 per million requests, a 15% management premium on EC2 on-demand instance pricing, and a $160.36 example total under its stated hypothetical assumptions of 100 million requests and reserved capacity. That is an AWS illustration for Lambda Managed Instances—not a standard Lambda price or an estimate for screenshot workloads. AWS Lambda pricing.

Self-host when control is worth the ownership
Self-hosted containers or VMs can suit teams that need control over network location, browser configuration, or data boundaries. That control comes with direct responsibility for capacity, patching, security, and service reliability. Check applicable software terms as well as infrastructure costs, particularly for commercial closed-source use.
Consider serverless for intermittent work, but validate the design
Request- and duration-based billing can align with intermittent workloads, but the pricing structure alone does not prove a browser workload will be cheaper or faster. Measure compatibility, execution time, memory needs, networking, and cold-start behavior in the design you plan to deploy.

Consider managed browsers when operational burden is the problem
A hosted service can preserve familiar Playwright or Puppeteer workflows while shifting browser-pool and runtime upkeep to the provider. Before comparing prices, check concurrency and session limits, plan allowances, metered units, proxy requirements, data location, and the terms for custom private deployments.
What a price comparison cannot tell you by itself
A monthly infrastructure number does not establish whether a service meets its latency, reliability, security, or data-residency needs. Nor do open-source software or a free image label mean that production operation has no cost: compute, network, monitoring, storage, licensing where applicable, and staff time remain separate considerations. The available official material does not provide an independent benchmark for total cost per screenshot or a general engineering-hours statistic, so any such figure should be calculated from a disclosed workload rather than presented as a norm.
