xrhr1aRender.exe is associated with a Xerox printer driver in a third-party file database. One recorded location is C:WINDOWSSystem32spoolPRTPROCSW32X86xrhr1aRender.exe. That association is a useful clue, not proof that every copy is genuine. A safe decision requires checking the file’s exact location, publisher, digital signature, version, hash and Windows Security results.

Do not delete the executable simply because its name is unfamiliar. First determine whether it belongs to a Xerox printer installation, whether the driver is damaged or incompatible, or whether malware is using the same filename. The repair path differs for each case.

What xrhr1aRender.exe is

A third-party file database identifies xrhr1aRender.exe as a Xerox Printer Driver component developed by Xerox. The filename may appear with different capitalization, such as xrhr1arender.exe; capitalization normally does not change how Windows identifies a file.

The database gives this example path:

C:WINDOWSSystem32spoolPRTPROCSW32X86xrhr1aRender.exe

This is part of the Windows print-spooler driver tree. The W32X86 folder conventionally indicates a 32-bit print processor location, so a 32-bit Xerox driver on a 64-bit Windows installation can still place files in a path like this. The path is consistent with a printer-driver component, but it is not an authentication mechanism. A malicious program can be copied into a convincing folder, and a legitimate driver can also be damaged.

What is not established by the filename alone

  • No universal hash, signer certificate, exact version or complete list of Xerox printer models has been established for this filename.
  • The same name in a different folder is not automatically malicious, but it needs more scrutiny.
  • A crash message does not by itself prove that the executable is infected; it may indicate a broken driver, an architecture mismatch or damaged Windows components.

Is xrhr1arender.exe safe?

It can be legitimate when it was installed with the correct Xerox printer package and is digitally signed by the expected publisher. It can also be unsafe if it is an impostor, has an invalid signature, appears in an unexpected directory or is detected by Microsoft Defender. Microsoft cautions that uncommon software is not automatically malicious, while unknown software carries higher risk until it has been analyzed and assigned a reputation.

Use the following checks before deciding whether to keep, repair or remove the file.

1. Confirm which file is generating the alert

  1. Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or use the file path shown in the error dialog.
  2. On the Details tab, locate xrhr1aRender.exe if it is running.
  3. Right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process has already exited, use the path displayed in the error message or search for the filename in File Explorer.
  4. Record the complete path, drive letter, file size and modification date before changing anything.

A copy beneath a Xerox driver directory or the Windows print-spooler tree is more consistent with the database record than a copy in Downloads, Temp, an unusual AppData folder or the root of a drive. Location alone cannot prove legitimacy.

2. Inspect the digital signature

  1. Right-click the executable and select Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if it exists.
  3. Select the signer and choose Details. Windows should report whether the signature is valid and whether the certificate chain is trusted.
  4. Compare the signer with the publisher expected for the Xerox package installed on your PC. A missing, invalid or unrelated signature is a warning, not an automatic verdict.

Also check the Details tab in Properties for the product name, company, file version and original filename. A sensible version that matches the time you installed the printer supports the driver explanation; inconsistent metadata increases uncertainty.

3. Calculate a hash when you need a precise comparison

If Xerox support or your organization’s administrator gives you a known-good hash, calculate the local value in an elevated or ordinary PowerShell window with:

Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:pathtoxrhr1aRender.exe"

Replace the path with the actual location. A hash comparison is meaningful only when you have a trusted reference for the same driver package and version. An unmatched hash does not by itself identify malware; a different package version will naturally produce a different hash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Scan the file with Windows Security

  1. Right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender, if that option is available.
  2. Open Windows Security and go to Virus & threat protection.
  3. Use Scan options and select Custom scan for the file or its containing folder.
  4. Review the result in Protection history. Do not whitelist the file merely because deleting or quarantining it stops an error.

A full scan is appropriate when the file is suspicious or the custom scan does not explain repeated behavior. Microsoft describes a full scan as checking every file and program on the device.

5. Use Defender Offline for persistent suspicion

If the detection returns after quarantine, the process recreates itself, or it starts before normal Windows tools are fully available, run Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment, where persistent malware has more difficulty hiding or defending itself.

Before repairing: identify the printer and Windows build

Write down the exact Xerox printer model, whether it connects by USB, Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a print server, and the Windows edition and build. You can view the build with Win+R, entering winver, and pressing Enter. Also note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit in Settings > System > About.

These details matter because a driver package for a similar-looking model may not contain the same print processor, and a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch can cause loading or printing failures. If the printer is managed by a company print server, obtain the approved package and permissions from the administrator instead of replacing the driver independently.

Fix a legitimate Xerox driver that is missing or crashing

Step 1: Remove the affected printer

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the Xerox printer and choose Remove or Remove device.
  3. Disconnect the USB cable or temporarily disconnect the printer from the network if Windows immediately rediscovers it with the same broken package.

Removing the printer does not always remove the driver package. If the executable continues to crash, use the classic printer-management interface to remove the driver as well.

Step 2: Remove the old driver package

  1. Press Win+R, enter printui.exe /s /t2, and press Enter.
  2. In Print Server Properties, open the Drivers tab.
  3. Select the Xerox driver that belongs to the removed printer and choose Remove. If Windows offers Remove driver and driver package, use it only when you are certain no other printer relies on that package.
  4. Restart Windows.

If another Xerox printer or a shared queue uses the same driver, removing it can affect that device. On a managed computer, check with the administrator first.

Step 3: Install the model-matched package

  1. Use Xerox’s official Drivers and Downloads service, search by the exact printer model and select the package for your Windows edition and system architecture.
  2. Prefer the current package supplied for that model rather than a generic executable from a file-hosting or “DLL fixer” site.
  3. Run the installer with the printer disconnected if its instructions require that sequence. Reconnect the printer only when prompted, or add it after installation if the package uses a separate setup process.
  4. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.

The official Xerox workflow directs users to its Drivers and Downloads page and web-based print-driver installer. Do not download a replacement .exe from an unrelated executable repository; you need the complete, model-specific driver package, not an isolated copy of the file.

Step 4: Re-add the printer and test

  1. Reconnect the USB cable or make sure the printer and PC are on the same network.
  2. Return to Printers & scanners, choose Add device, and select the Xerox printer. For a shared printer, use the approved shared-queue path.
  3. Open the printer’s properties and print a Windows test page.
  4. Print a document from the application that previously triggered the crash.

If the test page works but one application still crashes, the application or its print settings may be the separate fault. If every print attempt still invokes xrhr1aRender.exe and fails, continue with the isolation checks below.

Step 5: Check for driver conflicts and architecture mismatches

  • Look for a newer Xerox package for the exact model and Windows build.
  • Confirm that the installed package matches 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
  • Check whether another installed printer uses the same Xerox print processor. Temporarily remove an obsolete queue and test again.
  • If the printer is shared from another computer or server, verify that the server is not repeatedly pushing an older package after you install the newer one locally.

Repair Windows components when corruption is involved

Use these commands when Windows components may be damaged, when multiple system-related errors appear, or when the driver reinstall does not explain the crash. They repair Windows components; they do not substitute for a model-matched Xerox driver.

  1. Save open work.
  2. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for it to complete. The process can take time and may appear to pause. Keep the window open until it reports completion or an error.

  1. In the same elevated window, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow

SFC scans protected Windows files and replaces incorrect versions when possible. Restart Windows after both commands finish, then print another test page. If either command reports that it could not complete repairs, preserve the exact message for support; repeatedly deleting the printer executable will not correct component-store corruption.

What to do if Defender detects the file or it is in an unexpected location

Treat a Defender detection, an invalid signature combined with an unusual path, or repeated recreation after quarantine as a security incident rather than an ordinary printer error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect the PC from networks if active compromise is suspected, especially if the computer is showing other signs of unauthorized activity.
  2. Allow Microsoft Defender to quarantine the file. Do not create an exclusion simply to make printing work.
  3. Run a full scan. If the detection returns or the process starts before normal Windows tools load, run Defender Offline as described earlier.
  4. Review Protection history and note the detected file path, threat name and action taken.
  5. Check startup entries and recently installed software for an item that recreates the file. Remove only entries you can identify confidently; preserve evidence for an administrator or incident-response professional when the computer belongs to a business.
  6. If credentials may have been exposed, change important passwords from a clean device and enable multifactor authentication where available.
  7. Seek professional incident-response help for repeated detections, signs of persistence or a business system. Manual malware removal can make the situation worse.

Can you delete xrhr1arender.exe?

Do not manually delete it while it is part of a working Xerox driver. Removing a print-processor file can leave the printer unusable, cause spooler errors or make Windows repeatedly attempt to repair the installation. Remove a legitimate copy through the printer and driver uninstall process, then install the correct package.

Deletion is appropriate only after Windows Security has identified the file as malicious or you have confirmed that it is an orphaned component no longer used by any printer. Even then, quarantine through Defender or uninstall through the associated driver is safer than deleting an executable from the spooler directory by hand.

Troubleshooting branches for recurring crashes

The crash occurs only when printing from one application

Print a test page from the printer’s Windows properties and from a different application. If those succeed, update or repair the failing application, clear its saved printer settings and select the Xerox printer again. The executable may be exposing an application-specific print path rather than failing for every job.

The crash occurs for every printer and Windows reports file errors

Run DISM followed by SFC, restart, and test again. If more than one printer driver fails, Windows component corruption or a shared print subsystem problem becomes more plausible than one damaged Xerox package.

The crash started immediately after a driver or Windows update

Record the update date and the previous driver version shown in the printer’s Properties. Install the current model-specific Xerox package cleanly. If the problem began after a package replacement supplied by a print server, ask the administrator to check the server’s driver version and architecture.

The file keeps returning after quarantine

Do not restore or whitelist it to regain printing. Run a full scan and then Defender Offline, inspect startup and recently installed software, and obtain professional help if the detection persists.

The file is in Downloads, Temp or an unrelated AppData folder

Do not assume it is the Xerox component merely because the name matches. Check its signature and metadata, scan it with Windows Security, and compare its hash with a trusted package if one is available. Do not replace it with a similarly named download.

Verification checklist after the repair

  • The executable is in the expected driver or spooler location, or has been quarantined after a confirmed detection.
  • The Properties dialog shows a valid signature from the expected driver publisher.
  • The product and file version match the installed Xerox package.
  • Windows Security reports no unresolved detection.
  • The printer appears once in Printers & scanners, with no duplicate obsolete queue.
  • A Windows test page and a real document print without the crash returning.
  • If Windows component repair was needed, both DISM and SFC completed and the PC was restarted.

How to avoid the same problem

  • Keep the exact Xerox model and Windows architecture recorded for future reinstallations.
  • Obtain drivers from the manufacturer’s official download service or an administrator-managed print server.
  • Keep Windows Security active and investigate detections instead of adding exclusions for convenience.
  • Before replacing a driver, note the current version and export or record printer settings that you may need to restore.
  • When several printers share a driver, test one queue at a time so a replacement does not disrupt every device.

As an optional shortcut after you have identified the printer and confirmed that the problem is driver-related, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a two-day free trial and no credit card before subscription; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
