xpupg.exe is a Windows executable historically associated with Trend Micro OfficeScan’s “Multi-Session Process Management Service.” That history does not make every copy safe: malware can use the same filename. Judge the particular file by its location, owning application, digital signature, behavior and Microsoft Defender results—not by the name alone.
Do not delete xpupg.exe before identifying it. The safest sequence is to inspect the running file, scan with updated Microsoft Defender, remove an unwanted owning application, and repair the related Trend Micro installation or Windows itself when the file is legitimate.

What xpupg.exe is
A historical Comodo File Intelligence record describes xpupg.exe as a legitimate process originally developed by Trend Micro. It identifies the process as the Trend Micro OfficeScan Multi-Session Process Management Service, part of the Trend Micro OfficeScan Client, with a default installation location under C:Program Files.

That is a historical third-party process record, not a current Trend Micro support statement. OfficeScan is commonly found on computers managed by an organization, so a home computer may never need this executable. Conversely, a business computer can depend on it as part of a centrally managed security installation. The product name, edition and installation path on your own computer matter more than the filename.

Windows can show xpupg.exe when the associated security client starts, updates, logs on a user, or handles multiple sessions. Seeing the process briefly is not by itself a fault. Persistent crashes, a missing-file message, unusual resource consumption or a copy in an unexpected folder requires investigation.
Is xpupg.exe safe or a virus?
There is no safe answer based only on the filename. A genuine OfficeScan component can be legitimate, while a malicious program can be saved as xpupg.exe to look trustworthy. The Comodo record specifically warns that malware authors may create files with this name. Its warning symptoms—unusually high CPU or memory use, browser pop-ups or redirects, freezes and degraded performance—are reasons to investigate, not proof that your copy is malware.
Microsoft’s malware-classification criteria also make an important distinction: unfamiliar software is not automatically malicious. After analysis, Microsoft may classify software as benign, malware, unwanted software, tampering software or a potentially unwanted application (PUA). Use several checks together:

None of these individual observations is conclusive. A familiar path can be used by a malicious file, and a legitimate component can misbehave after a damaged update. Treat the combination of evidence as your decision point.

How to identify the copy that is running
Before removing or repairing anything, establish which file Windows is actually using. These steps apply to Windows 11, 10 and the older Windows versions on which OfficeScan may still be installed.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Find
xpupg.exeunder the Processes or Details tab. If several copies appear, record each one’s location and resource use. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Copy or write down the complete path; do not rely on the shortened name shown in Task Manager.
- Note the application or service that launched it. If the folder belongs to Trend Micro OfficeScan, record the installed product and version shown in Windows’ app list.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. Record the publisher, version and whether Windows reports a valid signature.
- Check whether the file is currently consuming unusual CPU, memory or disk resources. A short spike while a security product starts is different from sustained usage accompanied by freezes or browser changes.
Do not execute a copy from an email, download folder or removable drive merely to test it. If the process exits before you can inspect it, use the file’s containing folder and the installed-app list to identify its owner instead.
Manual workflow for a suspicious or unwanted xpupg.exe
1. Update Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence
Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, and use the available protection-update control to check for the latest security intelligence. A scan made with stale intelligence can miss newer detections.

From Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start the scan. A full scan examines the computer rather than only the locations checked by a quick scan, so it can take considerably longer. Keep the computer powered on until Windows reports a result.

3. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the problem persists
If the executable keeps returning, cannot be removed while Windows is running, or symptoms continue after a full scan, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan in the same scan-options area. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, then restarts again to return to the desktop. Save open work first. This is Microsoft’s documented option for persistent unwanted software.
4. Apply a PUA or malware action
When Windows Security reports a threat or potentially unwanted application, open the detection details and select an action such as quarantine or removal, then choose Start actions (the exact wording can vary by Windows release). Microsoft notes that detecting or blocking a PUA does not necessarily remove it; you must select and start the remediation action.
5. Uninstall the owning application if you do not want it
If the detection points to an unwanted or obsolete program, remove that program rather than deleting an isolated executable:
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Older systems may use Control Panel > Programs and Features or the legacy Add or Remove Programs panel.
- Locate the application associated with the recorded xpupg.exe path.
- Select Uninstall and follow the program’s removal wizard. Restart if Windows requests it.
- After the restart, check Task Manager and run another Defender scan. If the executable remains because another component owns it, do not delete it blindly; investigate that component first.
On a company-managed computer, contact the administrator before uninstalling OfficeScan. Removing part of a managed security installation can leave the client incomplete and may violate your organization’s security policy.

6. Never download a replacement executable from an unverified site
If Windows says xpupg.exe is missing, do not obtain a replacement from a random DLL or EXE-download website. A similarly named file can be tampered with, bundled with unwanted software or the wrong version. For a managed Trend Micro installation, use the organization’s approved installer or administrator process.

There is no current, official xpupg.exe-specific error-code catalog in the available documentation. The correct repair depends on when the message appears and whether the file is legitimate.
The message appears when OfficeScan starts
First confirm the path, signature and Defender status. If they match a legitimate, intentionally installed OfficeScan client, repair or reinstall that managed security product through the organization’s approved administrator or vendor channel. Do not delete the executable first: doing so can leave the security client with missing components. If the product is no longer needed, uninstall it through Windows’ app-removal path instead.

Microsoft’s general installation and upgrade guidance recommends working through system and software conflicts in this order:
- Install available Windows updates and current hardware-driver updates, then restart.
- Remove nonessential or conflicting software. Microsoft specifically includes third-party antivirus software among possible conflicts when relevant; coordinate with an administrator before changing protection on a managed computer.
- Confirm that the system drive has enough free space for the operation.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the Windows image-repair command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthAllow DISM to finish, restart Windows, and retry the installation or upgrade. If the error continues, perform a clean boot to prevent nonessential startup services from interfering, then repeat the operation. Re-enable services after testing so the computer is not left in a diagnostic startup state.
The file is gone but Windows still reports it
An uninstall that leaves a startup reference can produce a missing-file message even after the executable has been removed. Recheck the owning application in Settings > Apps or the legacy programs panel, complete its official uninstall or repair, and restart. Avoid deleting random registry entries or scheduled tasks based only on a filename; an incomplete cleanup can cause additional startup failures.
Why xpupg.exe may use high CPU or memory
Resource use can have several explanations. A legitimate security client may be starting, updating or handling multiple user sessions. A damaged installation, incompatible software or a malicious copy can also cause sustained usage. The warning signs that deserve priority are high usage that does not settle, freezes, redirects, pop-ups, or a file path and publisher that do not match the installed product.
Use Task Manager to note whether usage is constant or temporary, and record the path before taking action. Then scan with updated Defender. Do not try to solve unexplained CPU use by ending the process repeatedly or deleting it; if it belongs to a security client, that can interrupt protection and make repair harder.
Choosing the least-disruptive response

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the name proves safety. Malware can copy a legitimate filename.
- Deleting before recording the path. You may remove a real security component or lose evidence needed for a diagnosis.
- Relying on a path alone. A malicious file can be placed in a plausible directory, and legitimate software can be installed somewhere else by an administrator.
- Treating a PUA block as removal. Open the detection and start the selected remediation action.
- Downloading a replacement from an unverified website. Use only an approved Trend Micro installer or administrator process for a managed installation.
- Removing protection from a managed PC without approval. Coordinate with the person or team responsible for the device.
- Using a cleanup tool as a substitute for antivirus protection. Utility software may help with Windows problems, but it is not a replacement for Microsoft Defender or another security product.
When to seek administrator or professional help
Ask your organization’s administrator for help if OfficeScan is managed, if Windows Security settings are locked, or if uninstalling the client requires a password. Escalate promptly when Defender reports malware that returns after remediation, when several unknown executables appear, when browser redirects continue, or when Windows cannot complete an upgrade after image repair and a clean boot.
Keep the recorded path, publisher, signature status, Defender detection name and the time the error appeared. Those details let an administrator distinguish a broken legitimate client from an impersonating file without requiring you to experiment with deletions.
Bottom line
xpupg.exe has a documented historical link to Trend Micro OfficeScan, but that link is not proof that every copy is legitimate. Verify the exact file and owning application, scan with updated Microsoft Defender, apply any detected remediation, and uninstall unwanted software through Windows. For a legitimate managed client, repair or reinstall it through the approved channel. For Windows upgrade failures, address conflicts and use the elevated DISM command rather than deleting the executable.
