xperiacompanionbundle.exe is normally an installer or cached installer bundle used by Sony Xperia Companion, not a standard Windows system file. Its name alone does not prove that it is safe. Check where the file came from, where it is stored, whether Windows shows Sony as the signer, and whether a security scan is clean before running or deleting it.
What xperiacompanionbundle.exe belongs to
Sony Xperia Companion is a Windows and macOS utility that includes software-repair functions for Xperia phones. The related filenames XperiaCompanion.exe, XperiaCompanionAgent.exe and XperiaCompanionBundle.exe are listed as installer-related names for the application. A deployment reference places XperiaCompanionBundle.exe below C:ProgramDataPackage Cache and uses it as part of an uninstall command. That pattern is consistent with a package-cache or bootstrapper component rather than a Windows component required by the operating system.

The executable may therefore appear while Xperia Companion is being installed, updated, repaired or removed. It can remain in a package cache after the main application is installed. The same filename can still be abused by malware, however, because filenames are easy to copy. Treat the individual file—not merely the spelling of its name—as the object you need to verify.

Is XperiaCompanionBundle.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer based only on the filename. A copy is more consistent with the legitimate installer when it was obtained through Sony’s official support-downloads route, sits in an Xperia Companion installation directory or C:ProgramDataPackage Cache, carries a valid Sony publisher signature, and passes a current security scan. A file delivered by an unexpected pop-up, email attachment, cracked-software page or random mirror should be treated as untrusted even if the name looks identical.

Check where the file came from
Ask how the file arrived on the computer. If you installed or updated Xperia Companion from Sony’s support page, the bundle may be an expected installation artifact. If you never installed Xperia Companion, or the executable appeared immediately after a suspicious download, do not launch it to find out what it does.
Check the location
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and read the location shown on the General tab. A path below the Xperia Companion installation directory or C:ProgramDataPackage Cache is consistent with the deployment reference. A copy in a random temporary directory, a browser-download directory, or an unrelated user-profile folder needs additional investigation. Location is a clue, not proof.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click
xperiacompanionbundle.exeand select Properties. - Open Digital Signatures. Select the listed signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Sony or Sony Mobile Communications.
- Use View Certificate to check that the certificate is intended for code signing and has not expired or been revoked according to Windows.
A missing, invalid or unrelated signature does not by itself identify malware, but it is a reason not to run the file. The available documentation does not publish a build-specific hash for every copy, so a signature check cannot replace a malware scan.

Scan the exact file
Use your installed Windows security software to scan the file itself. Scan the folder containing it as well if the alert identifies associated files. Do not disable protection to force an installer to run. If a scan detects a threat, quarantine the file, record the detection name, and avoid restoring it merely because the filename resembles Sony’s component.
Watch what it does
Stop if the file launches unrelated programs, creates unexplained startup or scheduled-task entries, makes network connections unrelated to installing Xperia Companion, or requests administrator access outside an installation or removal you intentionally started. These observations do not establish a diagnosis on their own, but they are inconsistent with treating an unknown copy as routine installer cache.
Should you delete xperiacompanionbundle.exe?
Do not delete it simply because it is an executable. If Xperia Companion is installed, the bundle can be part of the package-cache workflow used for uninstalling or repairing the program. Removing it may leave the application running today while making a later uninstall or repair incomplete. The safer sequence is to uninstall Xperia Companion through Windows first, restart, and then inspect any remaining cache only after you have confirmed that no repair or uninstall is pending.
When deletion is reasonable
- You have confirmed that Xperia Companion is no longer needed.
- The program has been uninstalled successfully through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or the equivalent Apps list in your Windows edition).
- No installer, update or uninstall process is running.
- The file has been scanned and is not being held as evidence of an active security incident.
If Windows says the file is in use, do not force-delete it. Restart and check for a pending uninstall instead. If the file fails its signature or malware checks, preserve the alert details and follow your security software’s removal process rather than manually experimenting with the file.
Windows requirements to check before troubleshooting
Sony’s current Windows requirements for Xperia Companion are broadband internet access, at least 5 GB of free disk space, an available USB port and USB cable, and Windows 11 64-bit or Windows 10 64-bit with Microsoft Extended Security Updates. A 32-bit Windows installation is not listed in those requirements.
Sony states that versions older than 24.9.1.202408201019, released on September 2, 2024, are no longer supported and cannot be brought current through automatic updating. If your installed version is older, replacing it with the latest release is the correct starting point rather than repeatedly repairing the old bundle.
Fix xperiacompanionbundle.exe errors: a safe order of operations
Use the following sequence. It separates an obsolete or damaged installation from phone-connection problems and avoids downloading an unofficial executable.
1. Record the exact error
Write down the complete message, any error code, and when it appears: during launch, installation, uninstall, phone detection or software repair. A message that the bundle is already running points toward an installer-state problem; a message that the phone is not detected points toward USB or MTP configuration instead. Exact wording is more useful than a screenshot cropped to the title bar.
2. Check the installed Xperia Companion version
- Open Xperia Companion.
- Open About this application.
- Record the displayed version and compare it with Sony’s support cutoff of
24.9.1.202408201019.
If the version is older than that identifier, close the application and continue with a clean replacement. Sony says unsupported versions should be replaced and that automatic updating is unavailable for them.
3. Restart Windows and retry the intended action
Save work, restart Windows, and try the uninstall or installation again. A restart releases a bundle process left behind by a failed update and clears many temporary installer locks. Do not run multiple copies of the installer at once.
4. Uninstall the old or damaged installation
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps (the wording can vary slightly by Windows release).
- Find Xperia Companion, open its menu, and select Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard. If it reports that the bundle is already running, restart Windows and try once more.
The package-cache copy is identified in deployment documentation as an uninstaller component. That is why deleting the executable first is a poor substitute for using the normal Apps uninstall path.
5. Download the current installer from Sony
Use Sony’s Xperia Companion support page and its official support-downloads domain. Do not substitute a file from an unofficial mirror. Before launching the installer, confirm that the download completed, the file’s Properties page identifies Sony as signer, and your security software reports no detection.
6. Install with the required resources available
- Confirm that Windows is a supported 64-bit edition: Windows 11 64-bit or Windows 10 64-bit with Microsoft Extended Security Updates.
- Make at least 5 GB of disk space available.
- Connect the computer to broadband internet.
- Use a working USB port and keep a USB data cable available for the phone connection.
- Run the official installer and follow each on-screen prompt.
If installation fails again, note whether the failure occurs while extracting files, registering the application or starting the program. Keep that detail for Sony support instead of trying a different executable with the same name.
Fixes when Xperia Companion does not detect your phone
A working Windows installation can still fail to see an Xperia phone. Sony identifies three common classes of problem: an MTP connection issue, Xperia Companion not detecting the device, or the phone not appearing in File Explorer. Work through the physical connection and Android USB mode before reinstalling the application again.
Use a data-capable cable
Unlock the phone before connecting it. Use a known-good USB cable that supports data, not a charge-only cable. If you have another cable that is known to transfer files, test it rather than assuming the original cable is suitable.
Select File transfer (MTP)
- Connect the unlocked phone to the PC.
- Pull down the phone’s USB notification or connection panel.
- Choose File transfer or Transfer files (MTP), not charging-only mode.
- Restart Xperia Companion and check for the device again.
The exact notification wording can vary by Xperia software version, but the required behavior is the same: Windows must receive an MTP file-transfer connection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Try another USB port
Disconnect the phone, try another known-working USB port, unlock the phone again, and reselect File transfer (MTP) if the notification returns. Avoid drawing a conclusion from one port or one cable. If the phone appears in File Explorer but not in Xperia Companion, record that distinction; it narrows the problem to application detection rather than a total USB failure.
Restart both sides of the connection
Close Xperia Companion, restart Windows, restart the phone, reconnect with the phone unlocked, and select MTP again. Then open Xperia Companion. This sequence prevents the program from retaining a stale connection state.
| Symptom | First check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Phone charges but is absent from File Explorer | USB mode and cable | Select File transfer (MTP), then test a known-good data cable and another USB port |
| Phone appears in File Explorer but not Xperia Companion | Application detection state | Restart Xperia Companion and Windows; record the result if detection still fails |
| Bundle says it is already running during uninstall | Stuck installer process | Restart Windows and retry uninstall from Installed apps |
| Installation fails on an old release | Version support | Replace versions older than 24.9.1.202408201019 with the current official installer |
When Xperia software repair fails
Software repair can rewrite the phone’s software. Before accepting a repair operation, preserve any available backup and read Sony’s warnings about the consequences. Do not assume that a repair is a harmless reinstall of the Windows application.
- Verify the Windows edition and 64-bit requirement.
- Confirm broadband internet access and at least 5 GB of free disk space.
- Use a secure, known-good USB data cable and a direct USB port.
- Keep the phone connected as instructed and do not switch it to charging-only mode.
- Follow Xperia Companion’s repair prompts exactly.
- If the repair stops, record the exact message and the step at which it stopped.
If the application still cannot complete repair after those checks, stop rather than downloading an unofficial replacement executable. Contact Sony support with the Xperia model, Windows edition, Xperia Companion version, exact error text and the steps already attempted.

Official reinstall or troubleshooting the existing install?
| Situation | Prefer | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Version is older than 24.9.1.202408201019 |
Official reinstall | Sony says the older release is unsupported and automatic updating is unavailable |
| Application opens, but the phone is not detected | Troubleshoot cable, USB port and MTP first | The connection mode can fail even when the Windows installation is intact |
| Uninstall is blocked by a running bundle | Restart, then uninstall from Installed apps | The cached bundle may be the uninstall component |
| File fails signature or malware checks | Stop and seek security or Sony support | The available documentation does not establish a hash or malware verdict for your exact file |
When to stop troubleshooting
- The file is unsigned, has an invalid signature, or names a publisher unrelated to Sony.
- Your security software detects the executable or associated installer files.
- The file came from an unexpected source and you cannot establish its provenance.
- Repeated official reinstalls fail on a supported Windows system with sufficient disk space and internet access.
- Phone software repair fails and you cannot preserve or verify a backup.
In the first three cases, keep the file quarantined and follow your security product’s incident guidance. In the last two, provide Sony support with the exact error and environment details. Do not infer that a clean-looking filename or a successful launch proves authenticity.
Quick Recap
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
Outbyte PC Repair can optionally help with common Windows issues such as damaged system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache cleanup, vulnerability checks and crash logging. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a paid subscription.
What to remember about this executable
xperiacompanionbundle.exeis normally associated with the Xperia Companion installer or package cache, not with Windows itself.- Provenance, file location, the Sony digital signature and a scan of the exact file are more meaningful than the filename.
- Supported use requires 64-bit Windows 11 or Windows 10 with Microsoft Extended Security Updates, broadband internet, 5 GB of free space and a USB connection.
- Versions older than
24.9.1.202408201019are unsupported and should be replaced. - For phone detection, check the data cable, USB port and File transfer (MTP) mode before repeating a reinstall.
- No published build-specific hash or independent malware verdict establishes the safety of every copy, so an individual file still needs verification.
