xperf.exe is Microsoft’s command-line collector and processor for Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) performance traces. It is normally installed with the Windows Performance Toolkit (WPT), which is delivered through the Windows SDK or Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). A genuine copy is expected under C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10Windows Performance Toolkitxperf.exe, but the filename alone does not prove that a file is safe.
Most xperf errors have a practical cause: WPT is missing, its folder is not on PATH, the command was not run with elevation, or the toolkit is too old to understand an ETW trace. The steps below show how to verify the executable, capture a trace, repair installation and environment problems, and open recordings with the currently supported analyzer, Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA).

What xperf.exe is and what it does
Microsoft describes XPerf as a set of performance-analysis tools built on top of Event Tracing for Windows (ETW). ETW can record requested kernel and software-provider events into an Event Trace Log (ETL) file. xperf.exe controls tracing from a command prompt and can process the resulting recording so that it can be inspected in WPA.

Windows does not need xperf.exe for ordinary startup, browsing, gaming or office work. It is a specialist utility used when someone is collecting evidence about CPU scheduling, disk activity, drivers, boot performance or another timing-sensitive problem. Seeing the process briefly while a trace is being captured can therefore be normal. A persistent process that you did not start, especially from an unexpected folder, deserves verification.

Where it comes from
Xperf ships as part of the Windows Performance Toolkit. Microsoft distributes WPT with the Windows SDK and the Windows ADK; it is not intended to be downloaded as an isolated executable from a DLL or “missing file” website. The documented default directory is:
C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10Windows Performance Toolkit
On a 64-bit Windows installation, the (x86) segment is normal because this is the documented location for the toolkit. A customized installation can use another folder, so the path is an important check rather than an absolute rule.

Microsoft still maintains support for the previous command-line tool, Xperf, for collecting data. Xperfview, the older graphical viewer, is no longer supported. Current Windows Performance Toolkit documentation directs users to open and analyze Xperf recordings with Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA). This distinction matters when an old tutorial tells you to launch Xperfview: the recording method may still work, but the viewer instruction is obsolete.
Is xperf.exe safe?
A copy installed by Microsoft’s Windows Kits Performance Toolkit and carrying a valid Microsoft Authenticode signature is the expected xperf.exe. Safety cannot be established from the name alone because malicious software can use a familiar filename. Check the file’s complete path, signature and installation source before allowing it to run or adding its directory to PATH.
Check the location in File Explorer
- In Task Manager, right-click an
xperf.exeprocess and choose Open file location, or locate the file manually. - Compare the folder with
C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10Windows Performance Toolkitor with the custom folder you selected for WPT. - Treat a copy found in
%TEMP%, a user-profile Downloads folder or an unrelated application directory as untrusted until its origin and signature are explained.
An unexpected path is a warning, not proof of malware: administrators sometimes install development kits on another drive. The next checks establish whether the file is actually signed and whether it came from an installer you recognize.
Verify the Microsoft signature
Right-click the executable, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details. Windows should report that the signature is valid and identify Microsoft as the signer. You can perform the same check in PowerShell:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature 'C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10Windows Performance Toolkitxperf.exe'Look for a valid status and a Microsoft signing certificate. A valid signature supports the file’s authenticity, but it does not by itself prove that the whole computer is free of unwanted software. If the signature is missing, invalid or issued to an unexpected publisher, do not run that copy; remove the untrusted package and install WPT from Microsoft’s SDK or ADK distribution.
Why xperf.exe may be running
A deliberate performance capture
A support engineer, developer or troubleshooting script may start xperf to collect ETW data. The command normally runs only for the duration of a capture and then writes an ETL file. If you recently investigated freezes, high disk use, slow startup or driver latency, that is a plausible explanation.
An automated diagnostic or script
Build scripts and support procedures can call xperf by its full path or through PATH. Check Task Manager’s command line (when available), the parent process and recently run scripts to identify what launched it. Do not delete a signed toolkit file merely because it appeared during diagnostics; first determine whether a capture is active.
An unexpected or suspicious invocation
If the process starts repeatedly without a known diagnostic task, or the executable is outside the Windows Kits directory and lacks a valid Microsoft signature, stop treating it as the genuine tool. Disconnecting from sensitive services while you investigate, preserving the file’s path and signature details, and using your organization’s security process are safer than replacing the file with a download from an arbitrary site.

The basic Microsoft quick-start sequence uses a short capture:
xperf -on DiagEasy
(reproduce the performance problem)
xperf -d trace.etlThe first command enables the DiagEasy tracing profile. Reproduce the slowdown or other symptom while the capture is active, then use xperf -d trace.etl to stop and process the recording into an ETL file. Open that file in WPA for analysis.
Use an elevated command prompt
Start Command Prompt with Run as administrator before configuring tracing. Some providers and hardware performance counters require elevation, and a non-elevated shell can produce access-denied or counter-configuration errors even when the executable itself is genuine.

Keep the capture manageable
ETL files grow as more providers and longer intervals are recorded. Capture only the period needed to reproduce the problem, save the output to a drive with sufficient free space, and record the exact commands and time of the symptom. A short, focused trace is easier to transfer and analyze than an unattended recording that runs for hours.

Install a current WPT build that includes WPA, then open trace.etl from WPA’s file menu. Do not rely on Xperfview instructions from older articles: current Microsoft guidance says Xperfview is no longer supported and that Xperf recordings must be opened and analyzed with WPA.
WPT, WPR and WPA: which component to use
These tools overlap but serve different parts of a diagnostic workflow.

Choose WPR and WPA when a guided capture and visual analysis are more convenient. Choose Xperf when you need a repeatable command-line capture or an existing script already depends on it. Whichever recorder you use, a newer WPT build is the safer choice for newer ETW event schemas.
Fix “xperf is not recognized” or “xperf.exe not found”
That message means the shell cannot resolve the command. It does not necessarily mean the executable is damaged.

1. Install or repair the Windows Performance Toolkit
- Use the Windows SDK or Windows ADK installer obtained from Microsoft.
- In the feature selection screen, select Windows Performance Toolkit. If WPT is already installed, run the installer again and choose its repair or modify option when offered.
- After installation, confirm that
xperf.exeexists in the Windows Kits Performance Toolkit directory.
The SDK/ADK installer is the supported distribution channel. Avoid replacing a missing file with a standalone copy from a third-party download site.
2. Run Xperf by its full path
This bypasses a broken environment variable and confirms whether the executable itself can start:

"C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10Windows Performance Toolkitxperf.exe" -on DiagEasyUse quotation marks because the path contains spaces. If this works while xperf alone fails, the installation is present and the remaining problem is PATH.
3. Add the WPT folder to PATH
- Press Windows key, search for Environment Variables, and open Edit the system environment variables.
- Choose Environment Variables. Under System variables, select Path and choose Edit.
- Add the directory that contains
xperf.exe, for exampleC:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10Windows Performance Toolkit. Do not replace the existing entries. - Confirm every dialog, close existing Command Prompt windows, open a new elevated prompt and try
xperfagain.
A new terminal is required because an already-open shell keeps its old environment. If the command still fails, check for a typo in the directory and confirm that the file was not removed by an incomplete installation.

Fix “failed to configure counters” and access-denied errors
Run the shell elevated
- Close the current prompt.
- Open Command Prompt from the Start menu, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt, then repeat the Xperf command.
ETW providers and hardware performance counters can require administrator privileges. Elevation is therefore the first correction for counter-configuration failures; changing PATH will not solve a permissions problem.
Reduce the capture to the needed profile
If a broad tracing configuration fails, start with the documented DiagEasy profile and reproduce the issue briefly. Capture only the providers needed for the diagnostic question. A smaller configuration reduces the chance that an unavailable counter or restricted provider blocks the entire session.
Check for another active tracing session
Close duplicate diagnostic scripts and stop an earlier capture before starting a new one. Two tools trying to configure the same resources can create confusing failures. After ensuring only one capture is active, retry from the elevated prompt.
Fix ETL-open failures and WPA error 0x80070032
When WPA refuses an ETL or reports 0x80070032, the problem can be a version mismatch rather than a corrupt recording. Microsoft’s Performance Diagnostics guidance explains that a trace processor can fail when an existing ETW event contains newer values that the installed toolkit or processing library does not understand.

Update the processing tools
- Install the current Windows Performance Toolkit through the Windows SDK or ADK.
- If your workflow uses a separate EventTracing processing library, update that applicable library as well.
- Open a new WPA session and retry the same ETL with the updated components.
Use the same or a newer WPT generation for both collection and analysis when possible. Updating the analyzer is particularly important when the trace was recorded on a newer Windows build or with newer providers.
Preserve the original trace
Work on a copy of the ETL so that repeated attempts do not overwrite the evidence. Note which WPT version created the trace and which version reports the error. If the current tools still cannot process it, that information helps determine whether the recording itself is incomplete or whether a provider schema remains unsupported.
Fix outdated Xperfview instructions
There is no supported repair that brings Xperfview back into the current WPT workflow. Replace the viewer step in the procedure:
- Keep Xperf for command-line collection if the existing script requires it.
- Install WPA from the Windows Performance Toolkit.
- Open the resulting ETL in WPA and use its analysis tables and graphs.
WPR plus WPA is the modern alternative when you are creating a new capture and do not need Xperf’s scripting behavior.
When to update WPT instead of changing Windows
Update WPT when the command is found and starts, but tracing or analysis fails against newer ETW data. A current toolkit improves compatibility with newer event schemas. Updating Windows itself is not a substitute for updating the SDK/ADK component that supplies the recorder and analyzer.
Conversely, do not reinstall WPT just because a command is not recognized if a full-path invocation works: repair the environment variable first. Likewise, do not edit permissions or system files when the actual error is an outdated viewer; use WPA.
A practical diagnostic sequence
- Identify the file. Record the full path shown by Task Manager or File Explorer.
- Validate provenance. Confirm the path is an intentional WPT installation and check the Microsoft digital signature.
- Confirm installation. If the file is absent, install or repair WPT through the Windows SDK or ADK.
- Confirm command resolution. Run the executable by its quoted full path, then repair
PATHif necessary and open a new terminal. - Elevate before tracing. Use an administrator Command Prompt for provider and counter configuration.
- Capture briefly. Run
xperf -on DiagEasy, reproduce the issue, then runxperf -d trace.etl. - Analyze with a supported viewer. Open the ETL in WPA, not Xperfview.
- Update for schema errors. If WPA reports
0x80070032or cannot understand newer event values, update WPT and the applicable processing library.
This sequence separates security verification, installation, environment, privilege and compatibility problems instead of treating every xperf message as a damaged executable.
