Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutexmousebuttoncontrol.exe is the main Windows executable for X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC), a utility that remaps mouse buttons and applies different button profiles to individual applications or windows. A copy is more likely legitimate when it came from the official Highrez download, is installed at C:Program Fileshighresolution enterprisesx-mouse button control, and has matching Highresolution Enterprises or Phillip Gibbons publisher and signature information. The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe.
For an error, first verify the file’s location and signature, then update or reinstall XMBC, check that the correct x86 or x64 build is installed, inspect its log, and test with a clean profile. If you do not want XMBC to run, disable its startup entry or uninstall it.

What is xmousebuttoncontrol.exe?
xmousebuttoncontrol.exe is the executable that runs X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC), a free Windows program from Highresolution Enterprises and developer Phillip Gibbons. XMBC lets you reconfigure and remap mouse buttons so a button can perform a different action in a selected application or window. It supports application-specific and window-specific profiles, with up to 10 layers per profile.

The official product description says it supports up to five mouse buttons. If a mouse driver does not expose its fourth or fifth button through the normal Windows input path, XMBC cannot remap that button. It also does not support more than five buttons.

The process normally remains in the notification area after it starts. Closing the visible settings window does not necessarily stop xmousebuttoncontrol.exe; XMBC can continue running in the background so its remaps remain active.
Is xmousebuttoncontrol.exe safe?
There is no universal answer based only on the filename. Malware can be given the same name as a legitimate program, so check provenance, path, publisher information and behavior together.
Check the installed path
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Find
xmousebuttoncontrol.exeon the Processes or Details tab, right-click it and choose Open file location. - Compare the folder with the usual XMBC installation directory:
C:Program Fileshighresolution enterprisesx-mouse button control.
A different path is not automatic proof of malware, because portable installations can be placed elsewhere. It is, however, a reason to investigate the download source and signature before allowing the process to run.
Check the publisher and digital signature
- In the file’s location, right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab, if present, and open the signature details.
- Check that the signer and product information correspond to Phillip Gibbons or Highresolution Enterprises and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
Also confirm that you obtained XMBC from the official Highrez download rather than a repackaged mirror. An unsigned file, a signature that does not match the expected publisher, or a download from an unknown source should be treated as untrusted until investigated.
Understand the available scan evidence
Independent HerdProtect metadata identifies the common installed path, associates the executable with Phillip Gibbons and Highresolution Enterprises signing metadata, and records an automatic startup value named XMouseButtonControl. One sampled build, SHA-1 91fa0e936841bf697d4cf34ce5e20a9bd8bfb21d, was reported as 0 detections out of 68 scanners in an analysis dated 2026-09-08 by HerdProtect/Reason Core Security.
That result applies only to that hash and date. It does not certify every executable named xmousebuttoncontrol.exe, a modified copy, or a later build. If your path or signature is unexpected, calculate the file’s hash and submit it to a reputable multi-engine scanner before permitting it to run.

Why does xmousebuttoncontrol.exe start with Windows?
Automatic startup is normal for an installed XMBC copy. Highresolution Enterprises says XMBC is configured to run when you log on and normally stays minimized in the notification area. The program needs to start at sign-in to apply your mouse profiles without requiring you to launch it manually.
Recommended Free Tools
The startup entry can appear as XMouseButtonControl. On Windows 8 and later, the official guidance points to the Startup tab in Task Manager or to MSConfig for changing this behavior.
Disable startup without uninstalling
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Find XMouseButtonControl, select it, and click Disable.
- Restart Windows and confirm that the process no longer launches automatically.
Disabling startup prevents automatic remapping after sign-in; it does not remove the program or its profiles. You can still launch XMBC manually when needed.
What causes xmousebuttoncontrol.exe errors?
The same visible symptom can have different causes. Common patterns include:
- A damaged or mismatched installation, including the wrong x86 or x64 build.
- An unsupported or older Windows version.
- Invalid XMBC profile or settings files.
- A mouse whose extra buttons are not exposed through the Windows message path.
- Another remapper, overlay or vendor mouse utility competing for input messages.
- An elevated application receiving input at a different privilege level from XMBC.
- An executable copied from an unknown source or altered after installation.
Record the exact symptom before changing anything. “The process will not start,” “the process starts but remaps do nothing,” and “saving a profile causes an error” point to different troubleshooting branches.
How to fix xmousebuttoncontrol.exe errors
1. Verify that the Windows version is supported
Check Settings > System > About to identify your Windows edition and version. XMBC’s current official list covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, plus the GUI editions of Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019 and 2022. Older Windows releases may work but are unsupported, so an error on one of those systems may not have a supported software fix.

On a supported release, install current Windows updates before testing XMBC again. Do not assume that a copy designed for an older operating system is the correct build for a current installation.
2. Update or reinstall from the official Highrez download
Use the current official installer or the official portable build. Updating is a practical first repair because the XMBC change log documents fixes for invalid application or window profile files, invalid settings files, Windows 11 scrolling behavior and other defects.
- Export or copy any profiles you need to keep.
- Close any XMBC settings window and run the current installer.
- Allow the installer to close the existing XMBC instance; the installer is designed to do this automatically, so you do not need to uninstall the old version first.
- Let the installer choose the appropriate x86 or x64 build, then complete setup.
- Sign out or restart Windows and test a simple profile before restoring custom configurations.
If you prefer not to modify the installed copy, test the portable build in a separate folder. Keep the portable and installed versions from running at the same time, because two XMBC instances can make input behavior harder to diagnose.
3. Confirm the installation architecture
A damaged or mismatched architecture can prevent launch or produce unstable behavior. The official installer selects x86 or x64 during setup. If you manually copied files, downloaded an old archive or moved an installation between computers, reinstall with the current installer rather than mixing files from different builds.
Check the operating system type in Settings > System > About > System type, then use the installer’s selection instead of forcing a build. Keep the executable, supporting files and profiles from the same XMBC release.
4. Read the XMBC log
XMBC records diagnostic information in the default directory:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press
Win+R, enter%AppData%RoamingHighresolution EnterprisesXMouseButtonControl, and pressEnter. - Open the log file with a text editor and look at entries created at the time of the failure.
- Note whether the message concerns startup, a profile, a settings file or an input device.
From XMBC’s settings or notification-area menu, you can enable debug logging while reproducing a problem. The user guide warns that debug mode is very resource-intensive and may reduce mouse responsiveness. Turn it off immediately after collecting the relevant entries.
5. Reset a damaged profile or settings file
If XMBC launches but fails when you save, import or apply a profile, the configuration may be malformed. The change log specifically mentions handling for invalid profile and settings files.
- Export working profiles, or copy the XMBC profile directory to a safe location.
- Switch temporarily to the default profile.
- Remove or recreate only the profile that triggers the error.
- Apply one simple remap and test it before importing additional layers or application rules.
- Restore saved profiles one at a time so the problematic file can be identified.
Do not delete your only copy of a custom profile before backing it up. A clean default profile is a diagnostic control, not proof that every custom profile is damaged.
6. Test the mouse and its button exposure
XMBC relies on standard Windows mouse messages and supports no more than five buttons. Test the mouse in another application and verify that Windows recognizes the button you are trying to remap. If the fourth or fifth button never reaches Windows because of the device driver, XMBC cannot assign an action to it.

When possible, test a different mouse. If another mouse works with the same profile, the original device or its driver is the likely point to investigate. If neither mouse works, return to the installation, profile and conflict checks.

7. Check elevation and software conflicts
A remap can fail in an elevated application when XMBC is running at a lower privilege level. As a diagnostic test, run XMBC and the affected application at matching elevation only when necessary, and avoid leaving applications elevated without a reason.
Temporarily exit other mouse remappers, gaming overlays and vendor control panels, then test again. XMBC operates through the Windows input/message path, so competing hooks can interfere with one another. Re-enable other utilities one at a time to identify a conflict.
8. Recheck the executable if behavior is suspicious
If the process appears outside the expected installation or portable folder, lacks a matching signature, changes its name, or runs without your having installed XMBC, stop troubleshooting it as an ordinary application error. End the process, preserve the file for analysis, verify its hash with a reputable multi-engine scanner, and investigate the source before relaunching it.
A clean result for the specific sample noted above cannot substitute for checking your own file. Do not replace a suspicious executable with one copied from an unofficial archive.

Disable only automatic launch
Use Task Manager > Startup apps and disable XMouseButtonControl, or use MSConfig’s startup controls. This keeps the installation and profiles available for manual use.
Uninstall XMBC
- Back up profiles you may want later.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on current Windows, or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older interfaces.
- Select X-Mouse Button Control and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows and confirm that the startup entry and process are gone.
- Only after confirming the uninstall, remove leftover XMBC files or profiles that you no longer need.
If the uninstaller is missing or fails, first reinstall the same official build and then run the uninstall again. Keep any configuration backup separate from the program folder.
Choosing the next troubleshooting action
| Situation | Best next action | Trade-off or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Official installer, supported Windows, normal path | Update or reinstall with the current installer | Preserves supported deployment, but custom profiles should be backed up first |
| Portable build needed for testing | Run the official portable build in a separate folder | Useful for isolation; do not run it beside the installed instance |
| Legacy Windows version | Move to a supported Windows release or accept unsupported operation | Older versions may work, but fixes and support are not assured |
| Error appears only with one custom profile | Test the default profile, then recreate or restore profiles one at a time | Can identify malformed settings, but unsaved changes may be lost without a backup |
| XMBC starts normally but is unwanted | Disable the startup entry or uninstall | Disabling retains the program; uninstalling removes it |
| Unsigned or unexpected-path executable | Do not run it; verify provenance and scan its hash | A filename match is not evidence of legitimacy |
When to stop troubleshooting and seek help
Collect the exact Windows version, whether the installation is x86 or x64, the XMBC version, the executable path, the signature result, the affected mouse model, the profile involved and the relevant log entries. Reproduce the problem with debug logging only long enough to capture useful evidence, then disable it. This information distinguishes an invalid configuration from an input-device or installation problem and gives the developer a usable report.
