Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →xmlvalue.exe (also written XMLValue.exe) is a PRTG Network Monitor sensor executable from Paessler. PRTG uses it to retrieve values from HTTP/XML or REST endpoints during sensor scans. It is not a standard Windows component, so the filename alone cannot prove that a copy is legitimate. A normal copy is usually inside PRTG’s Sensor System directory or a deliberately configured custom-sensor folder. A copy in Downloads, a temporary directory, %AppData%, or an unexplained startup location needs investigation before you run it.
This guide explains what the program does, where it should be, how to verify its publisher and origin, when deletion is unsafe, and how to handle 404, timeout, crash, and StackOverflowException reports without replacing the file with an untrusted download.

What xmlvalue.exe does in PRTG
PRTG Network Monitor polls devices and services through sensors. XMLValue.exe is the executable used by a PRTG sensor that requests a URL and extracts values from an HTTP/XML or REST response. Paessler documents that PRTG runs the file with every scan. In practical terms, a sensor can launch the program repeatedly, pass it a URL and related parameters, receive the endpoint’s response, and publish the returned value in the PRTG interface.

It is not a standalone Windows utility
Windows does not install xmlvalue.exe as part of the operating system. Its legitimate context is PRTG Network Monitor, including a local probe or a remote-probe installation that has been configured to use the executable. If you have never installed PRTG and cannot identify a monitoring administrator or custom sensor that needs it, treat the file as unverified rather than assuming it is harmless.
How custom sensors use it
Paessler’s product documentation describes an unofficial custom-sensor arrangement in which an administrator copies xmlvalue.exe into the PRTG custom sensorsEXE directory (or the equivalent folder on a remote probe), creates a custom EXE sensor, and supplies URL parameters. This is different from the copy in the normal Sensor System directory, but it can still be legitimate when an administrator intentionally configured it.
Where a legitimate copy should be
The full path matters more than the spelling of the filename. The exact installation root varies by edition, architecture, and administrator choice, so check the PRTG installation configured on your computer instead of relying on one hard-coded path.

PRTG Network Monitorcustom sensorsEXE |
Possible location for an administrator-created custom EXE sensor. | Ask who created the sensor, inspect its parameters, and check that the file was copied from the trusted PRTG installation. |
Custom SensorsEXEXML |
Paessler documents this arrangement for an EXE Script Advanced Sensor when a custom timeout is required. | Verify the sensor type, timeout parameter, and source of the copied executable. |
Downloads, a temporary directory, %AppData%, or an unrelated application folder |
Not established as a legitimate PRTG location by the filename alone. | Do not execute it until its provenance, signature, parent process, and scan result are clear. |
A remote probe can have its own PRTG program and custom-sensor directories. Compare the file’s path with the probe that owns the failing sensor; a copy on a workstation may be unrelated even if another machine runs PRTG normally.

Is XMLValue.exe safe?
There is no universal safe-or-malicious verdict based only on the name. Evaluate five independent signals: location, publisher and signature, launcher, provenance, and security-scan results. A file that matches the expected PRTG directory and is launched as part of a configured sensor is consistent with legitimate use. A file that fails several checks should be treated as potentially compromised.
Check the path and owner
- In PRTG, open the sensor that reports the error and note whether it is on the local probe or a remote probe.
- In Task Manager, right-click the process if it is running and choose Open file location. If it is not running, search the PRTG installation and custom-sensor folders rather than downloading a replacement.
- Compare the discovered path with the installation recorded in Apps or Programs and Features. An identical filename in an unrelated directory is a separate file that needs its own investigation.
Inspect the signature and publisher
Open the file’s Properties, select Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer details and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. A vendor build that is unsigned, has an invalid signature, or has a signing identity unrelated to the installed PRTG release deserves additional scrutiny. Do not assume that a displayed company name proves authenticity; verify the signature status and the file’s origin together.
PowerShell can show the signature without launching the executable:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature -FilePath 'C:pathtoxmlvalue.exe'
Replace the path with the exact file you found. A status such as Valid is useful evidence, not a guarantee that the file is safe.

Check the parent process and command line
Legitimate execution should fit the PRTG sensor workflow: a PRTG service or probe process launches the file, and the command line contains parameters that correspond to a configured sensor. An unexplained browser, script host, scheduled task, or random user application launching XMLValue.exe is a warning sign. Use Task Manager’s Details tab, Process Explorer from a trusted administrative source, or PowerShell process inspection to record the parent and command line before ending the process.
Calculate a hash when identity is disputed
If two machines contain different copies, calculate a SHA-256 hash and compare it with a known-good copy from the same PRTG release or with a value supplied by your administrator. Hashes identify whether files are identical; they do not by themselves prove that either file is trustworthy.
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -Path 'C:pathtoxmlvalue.exe'
Scan before allowing execution
Use current Microsoft Defender or another maintained security product to scan the individual file and then the system if indicators remain. If the file is outside the PRTG context, was created unexpectedly, has suspicious persistence, or makes unexplained network connections, disconnect the computer from networks where practical and follow Microsoft’s malware-response process: review startup Run keys and scheduled tasks, remove unauthorized Defender exclusions, and run an up-to-date full scan. Do not keep testing a suspicious executable merely to see whether the PRTG sensor recovers.
Why XMLValue.exe errors happen
- HTTP 404 or URI-encoding failure: encoded characters in the requested URL can be decoded incorrectly, so the server receives a different path and returns 404.
- Timeout: the endpoint, DNS, proxy, TLS negotiation, or response generation takes longer than the sensor’s configured limit.
- Malformed or unexpected response: the URL returns HTML, an authentication page, incomplete XML, or a schema that the sensor parameters do not handle.
- StackOverflowException or repeated crash: a defect, recursion condition, incompatible executable build, or problematic input can terminate the process.
- Missing or replaced file: antivirus quarantine, an incomplete PRTG update, manual cleanup, or an unauthorized replacement removed or altered the executable.
- Wrong sensor context: a custom sensor on a remote probe may be looking in that probe’s folder while the administrator repaired only the core server.
Read the PRTG sensor message, probe location, timestamp, URL parameters, and Windows event details together. The same filename can represent a configuration problem or a security problem, and the repair path is different for each.

Fix XMLValue.exe 404 and URI-encoding errors
Use this path when the endpoint works for a correctly encoded request but XMLValue.exe produces a 404 after characters in the URL are encoded or decoded. Paessler documents an XMLValue.exe.config file that changes .NET URI parsing for this case.
- Stop changing the URL until you have saved the current sensor parameters. Record the exact address, encoding, credentials method, and the probe that runs the sensor.
- Back up the existing
xmlvalue.exeand any existingXMLValue.exe.configfile. Keep the backup outside the program folder with its original timestamp. - Create a text file named exactly
XMLValue.exe.configbeside the affected executable in the PRTGSensor Systemdirectory. For a custom sensor, place the configuration beside the copy that the custom sensor actually launches. - Enter the
<startup>and<uri><schemeSettings>entries from Paessler’s documentation for the installed PRTG release. Do not copy a configuration intended for a different application or .NET runtime. - Save the file as plain text, not
.txt. Confirm in File Explorer that the complete name isXMLValue.exe.configand that it is in the same directory as the executable. - Trigger a manual scan and inspect the returned URL and sensor value. If the server still returns 404, test the URL independently with the same encoding and credentials; a server-side route or permission problem is not fixed by the configuration file.
- If the sensor becomes less stable, remove the new configuration file or restore the backup, then verify the exact PRTG version before trying again.
This setting addresses URI parsing; it does not repair a deleted endpoint, an expired token, a bad hostname, or an HTTP authentication failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix XMLValue.exe timeout errors
First determine whether the remote service is slow or whether PRTG’s ordinary sensor interface simply does not expose a long enough timeout. Check the endpoint from the probe’s network, not only from your desktop: DNS, firewall rules, proxy settings, TLS inspection, and route differences can change the result.
Recommended Free Tools
- Record the elapsed time until failure and compare it with the endpoint’s normal response time.
- Confirm that the URL returns the expected XML or REST payload and not a login page, redirect loop, or large diagnostic document.
- Reduce avoidable work at the endpoint, such as an unbounded query or an unnecessarily broad response, when you control that service.
- If the standard sensor cannot expose the required timeout, copy XMLValue.exe to the PRTG
Custom SensorsEXEXMLdirectory as Paessler documents. - Create or edit an EXE Script Advanced Sensor that launches that copy and supplies the documented timeout parameter. Keep the original executable in
Sensor System; do not overwrite it with the custom copy. - Run several scans across the normal and peak response periods. A timeout that succeeds once but fails during ordinary load is still too short for reliable monitoring.
Do not set an extremely long timeout merely to hide an unavailable service. A sensor that waits indefinitely can delay other monitoring work and make an outage harder to detect.
Best Value
Fix StackOverflowException and repeated crashes
A StackOverflowException is different from a timeout. The process has terminated, so increasing the network wait period will not address it.
- Capture the PRTG version, probe type, sensor definition, URL parameters, timestamp, and Windows event details.
- Back up the current executable before changing anything. Preserve its digital signature information and SHA-256 hash.
- Disable or pause only the affected sensor long enough to prevent a rapid restart loop; keep unrelated monitoring running.
- Check whether the crash occurs for one endpoint or for every XML/REST sensor on that probe. One endpoint suggests input or response data; all sensors suggest a shared executable or runtime issue.
- Review Paessler’s current support guidance for the exact installed release. A historical Paessler support record mentioned a beta XMLValue.exe package, but that record is not a current compatibility guarantee.
- Do not install that historical package, or any file from an executable-download archive, until Paessler or your administrator confirms that it matches your PRTG release. If a replacement is approved, keep the original backup and document the change so it can be reversed.
- After replacement or configuration change, test one sensor manually, then observe several scheduled scans before re-enabling a larger group.
If the crash began immediately after a PRTG update, compare the release notes and support recommendations rather than assuming that a Windows system file is at fault. XMLValue.exe belongs to the PRTG installation, so repairing Windows component files is not a substitute for checking PRTG compatibility.
What to do when xmlvalue.exe is missing or suspicious
When PRTG legitimately needs the file
If the sensor is intentional and the executable was deleted or quarantined, identify the exact PRTG release and probe first. Repair or reinstall PRTG from Paessler’s official distribution using the administrator’s normal change process. Recreate custom-sensor copies only after the core installation is verified, and rescan the restored file before enabling the sensor.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
When the file has no PRTG explanation
Do not search for a random replacement named xmlvalue.exe. Disconnect a potentially compromised machine from networks where practical, preserve the file’s path and timestamps, and run the security checks described earlier. Review startup Run keys, scheduled tasks, services, browser launchers, and Defender exclusions for entries that appeared with the file. Quarantine or remove unauthorized persistence through your security product or incident-response procedure rather than simply deleting the executable and losing evidence.
When antivirus quarantined a known-good copy
Record the detection name and hash, then have an administrator verify the PRTG source and signature. Do not create a broad Defender exclusion for the entire PRTG directory. If an exclusion is justified after verification, limit it to the smallest necessary scope and review it after the sensor is repaired.
Can you delete xmlvalue.exe?
Deleting it is safe only when no PRTG installation, local probe, remote probe, or custom sensor uses that particular copy and your security process has cleared the file. Removing the executable from Sensor System can make every XML/REST sensor that depends on it fail. Removing a custom copy can break one sensor while leaving the standard installation untouched.
- List every PRTG server and remote probe that could contain the file.
- Search sensor definitions and custom-sensor folders for references to XMLValue.exe.
- Pause affected sensors and save a backup before making changes.
- If the file is legitimate but obsolete, rename it to a backup extension first and monitor PRTG; permanent deletion can follow your retention policy.
- If it is suspicious, isolate and quarantine it through your security process rather than deleting it blindly.
A practical diagnosis table
| Symptom | Most useful first check | Appropriate repair category |
|---|---|---|
| 404 after encoded characters are added to a URL | Compare the encoded request received by the server with the sensor’s original parameters. | Place the documented XMLValue.exe.config beside the affected copy and retest. |
| Sensor exceeds its time limit | Measure endpoint response time from the responsible probe. | Correct the endpoint or use the EXEXML and EXE Script Advanced Sensor timeout arrangement. |
| StackOverflowException | Check PRTG release, endpoint scope, and crash details; back up the executable. | Seek version-specific vendor confirmation before any executable replacement. |
| File is absent after an update or quarantine | Verify the installation and security-product event. | Repair or reinstall the matching PRTG release from an official source. |
| File runs from an unexplained directory | Inspect signature, parent process, command line, hash, and persistence. | Isolate and scan; do not force the file to run. |
Preventing future XMLValue.exe incidents
- Document whether each XML/REST sensor runs on the local probe or a remote probe.
- Keep the sensor URL, encoding requirements, authentication method, and expected response format with the sensor’s change record.
- Back up the original executable and configuration before PRTG upgrades or custom-sensor changes.
- Use the smallest practical timeout and alert on rising response time before outright failure.
- Review custom-sensor directories periodically and remove copies that no active sensor references.
- Keep Windows security software and PRTG maintenance current, but do not assume an alert or a clean scan replaces path and provenance checks.
These practices separate a normal monitoring configuration fault from an unrelated executable that happens to use the same filename.
