It is not a Windows system component. The filename alone cannot prove that a particular executable is genuine or safe.
If the program will not open, reports that it is looking for devices, or fails to detect your phone, work through the manual checks in this order: verify the file’s source, install a compatible Java Runtime Environment, enable USB debugging and authorize the computer, install the correct ADB drivers, then test the cable, port and ADB connection before attempting any destructive operation.

What xiaomi-adb-fastboot-tools.exe is
Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot Tools is described by its project README as “A simple tool for Xiaomi devices, utilising ADB and Fastboot.” It is a community graphical utility developed in Java. The program can read device properties, reboot a phone, remove selected packages, perform some wiping and flashing tasks, and expose selected bootloader functions. Because it is a Java application, a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is required before it can run.
The executable name is only a label. Windows, an installer, or an unrelated download can use the same name. A copy found in a temporary folder, an email attachment, a pirated software bundle, or an unsolicited download should therefore be treated as untrusted until its origin and integrity are checked.

What the tool does not replace
The project says it does not replace Xiaomi’s MiFlash or MiUnlock utilities. Its purpose is a consolidated community interface for supported ADB and Fastboot operations, not a universal Xiaomi service program. Compatibility can vary by phone model, Android/MIUI release and the operation selected.
Is xiaomi-adb-fastboot-tools.exe safe?
There is no blanket safety verdict for every file with this name. The repository is open source, but neither the repository nor Xiaomi authenticates every third-party executable copy. Safety depends on provenance, file integrity, Windows security results and what you do after launching it.
Check where your copy came from
- Prefer the project’s repository or a release linked from it: Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot Tools on GitHub.
- Keep the original archive or installer so you can document its source and compare it later. Avoid download portals that repackage executables or add installers.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review the file location, publisher information and any available Digital Signatures tab. The absence of a signature is not proof of malware, but it means you should rely more heavily on source and hash checks.
- Run a current Windows security scan before opening the file. If the scan flags it, or the file is an unexplained random executable, quarantine it and obtain the software again from a trusted project source.
- When the publisher supplies a checksum or signature, compare it with the downloaded file. A matching hash shows that the bytes are unchanged from that published file; it does not by itself prove that the publisher or every operation is safe.
Understand the phone-side risk
The project warns: “Use the tool at your own risk. Removing factory apps which aren’t in the tool may break your phone.” Debloating, wiping, unlocking and flashing can erase data or leave a phone unusable if the wrong package, image or partition is chosen. Xiaomi’s official unlock instructions also warn that “After the device is unlocked, it becomes less secure and more vulnerable to malware attacks, which may lead to the disclosure and loss of your private data.” Read the model-specific instructions, back up first and do not unlock merely to solve a Windows detection problem.
Xiaomi’s Security Center describes its vulnerability-disclosure program and security coordination process at trust.mi.com/misrc. That resource is useful for Xiaomi security information, but it is not a certification of an arbitrary executable downloaded elsewhere.
ADB and Fastboot: which connection you need
| Mode | Phone state | Typical uses | What Windows must detect |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADB | Android is running normally | Debugging, shell commands, reading properties, file transfer and reboot commands | An authorized ADB interface and a serial number in adb devices |
| Fastboot | The phone is in bootloader/Fastboot mode | Bootloader communication, flashing and certain low-level system changes | A Fastboot interface and a device identifier in the relevant Fastboot command |
“Looking for devices” in the GUI generally means the ADB connection has not been established. Reinstalling the GUI alone cannot make Windows recognize a phone if USB debugging, authorization, drivers, the cable or the port are wrong.
Requirements before troubleshooting
- A Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7 computer supported by the project.
- A compatible Java Runtime Environment for launching the Java application.
- A known data-capable USB cable and a direct USB port on the computer.
- The phone charged enough to remain on during setup.
- A backup of photos, messages, authenticator data and anything else you cannot replace.
- Platform-Tools containing
adbfor command-line testing. Use the same architecture and driver package appropriate for your Windows installation.
Fix 1: the executable will not open
Verify that Windows is launching the intended file
- Open the file’s Properties and note its full path, file size, publisher and signature information.
- If it came from an unknown site, stop and replace it with a copy obtained through the project’s repository or a release linked there.
- Scan the file with Windows security tools. Do not disable protection simply to force an unknown executable to run.
- Extract the release to a normal folder such as your Documents folder instead of launching an executable directly from a browser cache or an email attachment.
Install or repair Java
The project explicitly states that it was developed in Java and needs the Java Runtime Environment. Install a current, compatible JRE from a reputable Java distribution, restart Windows if the installer requests it, and launch the program again. If Windows reports that Java is missing, an invalid runtime, or a class could not be loaded, remove a broken Java installation and install one supported by the release rather than downloading a random “Java DLL” from a third-party site.
Check Windows blocking and permissions
In Properties, look for an Unblock option on a file downloaded from the internet. Use an account with permission to read the installation folder, but avoid running the program permanently as administrator. If an administrator prompt appears, confirm that the path and publisher information match the copy you intended to use. A blocked or damaged archive should be downloaded again instead of repaired by replacing individual DLL files.

Enable Developer Options and USB debugging
- On the Xiaomi phone, open Settings and locate About phone (the exact label can vary by MIUI or Android release).
- Tap the MIUI version entry repeatedly until Android confirms that developer mode is enabled.
- Return to Settings, open Additional settings, then Developer options.
- Enable USB debugging. Keep the phone unlocked while making the first connection.
- Reconnect the USB cable and watch the phone for an RSA authorization prompt. Select the option to remember the computer only when you trust that computer, then tap Allow.
Without USB debugging, ADB cannot communicate with Android even when Windows can see the phone as a charging device. If the prompt never appears, revoke USB-debugging authorizations in Developer options, reconnect, and watch for a new prompt.
Install or refresh the ADB driver
The project’s FAQ says that Windows most likely does not recognize the phone in ADB and recommends installing universal ADB drivers. Install a reputable universal ADB driver package, disconnect and reconnect the phone, and allow Windows to finish device setup. In Device Manager, expand entries such as Android Device, Other devices and Portable Devices. A warning icon, an “unknown device” entry or a device that repeatedly appears and disappears indicates a driver or physical-connection problem.
Do not select a random driver just because its name contains Xiaomi. The driver must expose an ADB interface while USB debugging is enabled. If a previous package is conflicting, uninstall that device from Device Manager, disconnect the phone, restart Windows, then install the intended driver and reconnect.
Test the cable and USB port
- Use a known data-capable cable; many inexpensive cables provide charging only.
- Connect directly to a rear motherboard port on a desktop or a built-in port on a laptop. Avoid hubs, monitor ports and docking stations while diagnosing.
- Try a second port and, if available, a second known-good cable.
- Unlock the phone and choose a data-transfer USB mode if Android presents a USB notification.
- Check whether Windows reacts when the cable is inserted. No sound, notification or Device Manager change points to the cable, port or phone socket rather than the GUI.

Interpret the result as follows:
| Result | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
A serial number followed by device |
ADB is connected and authorized. | Launch Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot Tools and retry the operation. |
A serial number followed by unauthorized |
The phone has not approved this computer. | Unlock the phone, accept the RSA prompt, then run adb devices again. |
| No device listed | ADB cannot see the phone. | Recheck USB debugging, the driver, cable, port and USB mode. |
adb is not recognized |
Platform-Tools is not in the current folder or PATH. | Open the terminal in the Platform-Tools folder or use the full path to adb.exe. |
Stop at this stage if the list is empty. The GUI cannot solve a missing ADB transport. Fix Windows’ connection first, then reopen the tool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 3: switch to Fastboot only when the operation requires it
Fastboot is not an alternative driver mode for ordinary ADB tasks. It runs while the phone is in bootloader mode. The project states that image flashing, wiping and enabling Camera2 require an unlocked bootloader; other functions generally work without root or unlocking.
Enter Fastboot mode safely
- Power the phone off or use the Android reboot-to-bootloader option when available.
- Hold Volume Down and Power until the Fastboot screen appears. Xiaomi’s unlock instructions document this button combination.
- Connect the phone directly to the computer by USB.
- Install the Fastboot-capable driver if Device Manager shows an unknown bootloader device.
- Use the appropriate Platform-Tools command to confirm that a device identifier is returned before flashing anything.
Do not use Fastboot commands copied from a different model. A successful connection only proves that the computer can communicate; it does not validate an image or command.
Unlocking is a separate, destructive decision
For supported devices, Xiaomi’s documented path uses Mi Unlock on the PC: enter Fastboot with Volume Down + Power, connect by USB, and click Unlock. Follow the current instructions at Xiaomi’s bootloader-unlock page, including any account, waiting-period or data-erasure requirements shown for your region and model.
Unlocking can wipe the phone and weakens the security boundary. It should not be used as a generic fix for an ADB driver error. Back up first, confirm the exact model and image source, and understand that an unlocked device can be more exposed to malicious software and private-data loss.
Fix 4: recover from common tool errors
“Looking for devices” never finishes
- Confirm that
adb devicesshows an authorized device. - Close other phone-management, synchronization or ADB-server programs that may hold the interface.
- Disconnect every other Android device, restart the computer, reconnect one phone and retry.
- Restart the ADB server from Platform-Tools with
adb kill-server, thenadb start-server, and runadb devicesagain. - If the list remains empty, return to the driver and cable checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling the GUI.
ADB shows “unauthorized” repeatedly
Unlock the phone and accept the RSA prompt. If it is hidden, keep the screen awake, change the USB cable or port, then use Developer options to revoke USB-debugging authorizations and reconnect. A work or school policy can also restrict debugging; test with a personally controlled Windows account and phone when possible.
The program opens but a feature is unavailable
Check whether that feature needs root, an unlocked bootloader or Fastboot mode. Image flashing, wiping and Camera2 enabling require an unlocked bootloader according to the project. A feature being disabled is not evidence that the executable is malware or that reinstalling Java will unlock it.
The phone is stuck after debloating or flashing
Stop issuing commands. Keep the backup, record the exact model and package used, and consult the model-specific recovery or official service instructions. The project’s warning about removing factory apps is significant: removing packages outside its curated list can break the phone. Do not flash an image merely because its filename looks similar, and do not wipe user data until you understand what will be erased.

Safe operating checklist
- Verify the repository or release source before launching the executable.
- Scan the file and retain the original download.
- Install Java from a reputable distribution; never replace missing DLLs with random downloads.
- Back up before debloating, wiping, unlocking or flashing.
- Use the exact model, region and Android/MIUI build when selecting images or packages.
- Test ADB with
adb devicesbefore opening a GUI operation. - Authorize only computers you trust and revoke USB debugging when finished.
- Keep the phone charged and connected directly; avoid hubs while flashing.
- Do not interrupt a write operation or close the program while a partition is being changed.
- Record the command, package and result if you need to recover or ask for support.
Choosing the right remedy
| Your symptom | Best first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The executable does not start | Verify the copy, scan it and install a compatible JRE. | The project is a Java application; a bad or untrusted file must be ruled out first. |
| The GUI says it is looking for devices | Enable USB debugging, accept authorization, install ADB drivers and run adb devices. |
The README attributes the Windows failure primarily to the phone not being recognized in ADB. |
| ADB is empty but the phone charges | Try a data cable, direct port, USB-transfer mode and refreshed driver. | Charging does not prove that a data interface exists. |
| You need to flash or wipe | Confirm the exact image and bootloader state, make a verified backup, then use Fastboot only if required. | These operations are more destructive and require an unlocked bootloader. |
| You need official bootloader unlocking | Use Xiaomi’s Mi Unlock procedure for supported devices. | The community GUI does not replace MiUnlock. |
What is and is not established about safety
No authoritative dated study or independent test establishes a malware-detection percentage, failure rate or safety score for xiaomi-adb-fastboot-tools.exe. The available evidence is qualitative: the project’s warnings and feature documentation, Xiaomi’s bootloader-security warning, and Xiaomi Security Center’s security-disclosure information. Treat the file as a tool that requires verification, not as automatically safe or automatically malicious because of its name.
If the manual Java, USB-debugging, driver and cable checks do not resolve a broader Windows crash or configuration problem, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings, clean temporary and cache files, check vulnerabilities and log app crashes. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.
Final verdict
xiaomi-adb-fastboot-tools.exe normally denotes a Java-based Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot utility, not a Windows component. Its safety cannot be inferred from the filename. Verify the source and scan the file, install Java, establish an authorized ADB connection with the correct driver and cable, and reserve Fastboot, unlocking, wiping and flashing for a backed-up phone and a model-specific procedure.
