wsusservice.exe is the Update Service executable for Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). It normally runs on a Windows Server that administrators use to approve and distribute Microsoft updates, not on an ordinary consumer PC. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine: verify its registered path, Microsoft digital signature, service context and runtime behavior. If the service is crashing or clients are not receiving updates, work through service, log, cache, policy, network and permissions checks before changing files or access-control settings.
What wsusservice.exe does
WSUS is a Windows Server role for centrally approving and distributing Microsoft updates to managed computers. Microsoft’s WSUS Operations Guide identifies wsusservice.exe as the WSUS Update Service, alongside the WSUS web and synchronization services. The executable is therefore normally a server component. A standard home or unmanaged desktop does not need it simply to use Windows Update.

The expected installation area is commonly %Program Files%Update ServicesServices. That is a useful reference, not a guarantee: the directory can differ by Windows Server version and by an administrator’s installation choices. Always inspect the path registered for the service instead of trusting the filename or a search result.
WSUS has two sides that are easy to confuse:

Finding the file on a client does not automatically mean malware is present; an administrator may have installed server components or another product may have placed a similarly named file there. It does mean you should verify why it exists and whether a registered service actually uses it.

How to decide whether a copy is safe
Use all four checks below. A familiar filename is only one clue, and a legitimate executable can still be abused if the host or service has been compromised.
1. Check the service’s registered path
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Locate the WSUS Update Service or the organization’s documented WSUS service entry. Open Properties and read Path to executable.
- Compare the path with the server’s documented WSUS installation directory. A path under the expected Program Files location is consistent with a normal installation; a user profile, temporary folder, recycle-bin location or random download directory deserves investigation.
- Use Task Manager or the service properties to open the file location and confirm that the running process is the same file as the registered service binary.
Do not delete or replace a suspicious file merely because its name is unfamiliar. Record the path, service name, account and timestamps first so an administrator or incident-response team can investigate without destroying evidence.
2. Validate the Microsoft digital signature
In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature and choose Details. The signer should be Microsoft and Windows should report that the signature is valid. A missing, invalid or unexpectedly different signer is a reason to stop and investigate. Signature validation does not by itself prove that the server is clean, but a valid Microsoft signature combined with the expected path is materially more reassuring than a filename match alone.
3. Confirm the service and process context
The process should be launched as the registered WSUS service and should have a command line and parent process consistent with that role. Check the service account, startup type and current state in Services. In Task Manager’s Details view, add the command-line column if it is available and compare the executable path with the service registration. Unexpected parent processes, an interactive desktop launch or a command line containing unrelated scripts are warning signs.
4. Watch what it launches and where it connects
Normal update servicing should not cause a WSUS process to open command shells, launch PowerShell unexpectedly, download unrelated payloads or connect to infrastructure that is not part of the organization’s update design. Microsoft Security Intelligence describes the specific suspicious pattern this way: “The Windows Update process (wsusservice.exe or w3wp.exe) unexpectedly starts multiple Command Prompt windows (cmd.exe), which then launches PowerShell (powershell.exe).” Microsoft associates that behavior with Behavior:Win32/SuspWsusActivity.A and exploitation of CVE-2025-59287.
If you see that chain, an unusual outbound connection or a payload download, treat it as a potential security incident rather than an ordinary service crash. Isolate the server according to your incident-response policy, preserve relevant logs, scan with current security tooling and apply Microsoft’s WSUS security updates. Do not assume that a legitimate filename makes suspicious behavior safe.

First identify whether the failure is on a server or a client
The correct repair path depends on the computer’s role. A WSUS server problem can prevent many managed computers from updating, while a client-side problem may affect only one machine.

Do not install or copy wsusservice.exe onto a client as a repair. Clients normally use the Windows Update service and BITS to communicate with the organization’s update service.
Manual troubleshooting sequence
Work in this order. It starts with reversible observations and service checks, then moves to cache repair, policy and permissions. Keep the exact error code and time of each attempt; those details make Event Viewer and Windows Update logs much easier to interpret.
1. Capture the exact symptom
- Record whether the error appears on the WSUS server, one client or many clients.
- Copy the complete error code, including leading zeroes and the
0xprefix. For example,0x80070005is an access-denied failure, not a generic “WSUS error.” - Note whether the service stops, Windows Update reports “checking” indefinitely, downloads fail, installation fails or clients simply never appear in WSUS reporting.
- Write down what changed immediately before the failure: a policy edit, security-software update, server patch, network change or permission change.
2. Verify service state and read the logs
On a client, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
sc query wuauservIf the service is stopped and there is no policy or maintenance reason to keep it stopped, start it with:
sc start wuauservIn Services, also check BITS and confirm that the Windows Update-related services are not disabled. On the WSUS server, verify that the WSUS Update Service is present, points to the expected executable and remains running after a restart. A service that stops immediately needs log analysis rather than repeated blind restarts.

Open Event Viewer and inspect the Windows Update operational log under Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > WindowsUpdateClient > Operational, along with relevant System and Application events. On clients, review SoftwareDistribution.log. On a current Windows client, you can create a readable Windows Update log with:
Get-WindowsUpdateLogRun that command in PowerShell, then correlate the timestamps with the failure. On a WSUS server, include WSUS, IIS and security logs when investigating synchronization, web access or suspicious process activity.
3. Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
Use the built-in troubleshooter before making manual permission changes:

- Windows 11: open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update and select Run.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
Apply only the changes the troubleshooter reports, restart if requested and test again. If the computer is managed by an organization, record the result before changing policy so the administrator can compare the client with the intended configuration.
4. Reset the Windows Update download cache
Corrupted contents in the Windows Update cache can prevent detection or installation. Use an administrator account and do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
- Open Command Prompt (Admin).
- Stop Windows Update:
net stop wuauserv. - Stop BITS:
net stop bits. - In File Explorer, enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand clear its contents. If a file is locked, confirm that both services really stopped before investigating the lock; do not force-delete unrelated files. - Start BITS and Windows Update again:
net start bits, thennet start wuauserv. - Restart the computer if Windows requests it, then run a new update check and review the fresh log entries.
This reset removes the local download and detection cache; it does not repair a wrong WSUS URL, a blocked connection or a damaged server installation. Those conditions require the checks below.

5. Correct date, time and time-zone settings
Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time zone where your organization permits it, choose Sync now, then retry Windows Update. A substantially wrong clock can make authenticated update communication fail even when the network is otherwise available.

6. Check Group Policy and WSUS URLs
A client can be healthy yet receive no updates when policy points to the wrong server or when the policy was never applied. In the Local Group Policy Editor, the relevant setting is under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update. The administrator should verify the policy that specifies the intranet Microsoft update service location and the statistics-server URL. Both URLs must match the organization’s intended WSUS deployment.
For domain-managed computers, compare the effective policy with the policy the administrator expects. Check for a recent conflicting Group Policy Object, an accidentally disabled Windows Update setting or a policy that still references a retired server. Do not overwrite domain policy locally without approval; a local change may be replaced at the next policy refresh.
7. Verify BITS, the Windows Update Agent and network reachability
Windows Update relies on the Windows Update Agent and BITS as well as the visible update service. Confirm in Services that BITS is not disabled and that it can start without immediately stopping. Review its related events when downloads remain at zero or repeatedly restart.
From the client, verify that the configured WSUS server resolves and is reachable over the ports used by your deployment. WSUS commonly uses TCP 8530 or 8531, but the correct port is the one configured by your administrator. A firewall, proxy, VPN route or TLS inspection device can block the connection even when the server is online. Test from an affected client and from an unaffected client to distinguish a local problem from a server-wide or network-wide block.

Avoid deleting registry keys or agent databases based on a generic internet command; the wrong reset can remove configuration that your organization needs.
8. Handle error 0x80070005 without weakening the system
0x80070005 means access was denied, but it does not identify one single cause. Microsoft lists several possibilities:
- Incorrect permissions on the WinSxS or
SoftwareDistributiondirectories. - Registry permissions that prevent the update service from reading or writing required settings.
- Antivirus or other security software locking a file or operation.
- Missing or altered permissions for the
SYSTEMaccount. - Restrictive Group Policy settings.
Generate and review the Windows Update log with Get-WindowsUpdateLog, examine CBS servicing events and compare the failure time with security-software and policy logs. Back up the operating-system disk before repairing permissions. Apply only documented reset commands that match the diagnosed failure, and change the smallest possible ACL or registry scope. Do not grant broad “Everyone” control, disable security software permanently or take ownership of system directories as a first-line fix. If the log does not identify the blocked object, stop and obtain administrator or Microsoft support guidance before changing permissions.
9. Investigate repeated wsusservice.exe crashes
A crash loop is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check the Application and System event records for the faulting module, service termination reason and timestamp. Confirm again that the service points to the expected signed file. Compare the crash time with WSUS, IIS, security-tool and Windows servicing events. If the service fails only during synchronization, inspect server connectivity and synchronization logs; if it fails immediately at startup, focus on the service registration, permissions and installation integrity.

Preserve the original binary and logs, apply current WSUS security updates through your organization’s change process and escalate if the service continues to crash after basic service, cache, policy and permission checks.
10. Treat shell-spawning or downloader activity as an incident
Unexpected wsusservice.exe or w3wp.exe launching cmd.exe, which then launches powershell.exe, is not normal update servicing. The same is true of downloads or outbound connections to unrelated infrastructure. For a suspected CVE-2025-59287 exploitation, follow this order:
- Isolate the WSUS server according to the organization’s incident-response plan, balancing containment with the need to keep evidence and essential management available.
- Preserve WSUS, IIS, Windows, PowerShell, process and security logs before routine cleanup or reimaging.
- Review the process tree, command lines, downloaded files and outbound destinations.
- Apply Microsoft’s WSUS security updates and any other emergency remediation required by your security team.
- While investigating, restrict inbound TCP 8530/8531 access to required management systems rather than leaving the service broadly exposed.
- Use current security tooling to scan the server and inspect neighboring systems that may have received the same policy or payload.
After containment, repeat the path and signature checks, verify the service registration and monitor for another unexpected child process. A clean filename check cannot clear a server that has shown suspicious behavior.

Test the result at the level where the failure occurred:
- WSUS server: the Update Service stays running, no unexpected shells or downloaders appear, synchronization logs show normal activity and the server’s web components respond to authorized management systems.
- Single client: BITS and
wuauservremain started, the intended WSUS URLs are present in effective policy, the client can reach the configured server and new Windows Update log entries show detection or download progress. - Multiple clients: compare an affected client with a working one for policy, DNS, firewall and service differences. If all clients fail after a server or policy change, stop repeating client cache resets and return to the WSUS server and network path.
Escalate with the exact error code, affected role, service path, digital-signature result, relevant Event Viewer entries, Windows Update and WSUS/IIS log timestamps, effective policy and network test results. That evidence is more useful than a screenshot of the filename alone.
