The executable record identifies it as bundled with UniConverter 11 and lists only that known Windows 10 release.

Those records are third-party file-directory entries. They are useful identification clues, but they do not authenticate every copy found on a computer. A file can have the right name and still be copied, modified, or placed somewhere it does not belong.

The WS prefix is significant because the available evidence ties this filename to Wondershare’s product. It should not automatically be treated as the separate PhantomJS open-source browser project.
How to check whether your copy is legitimate
1. Find the complete path
- When an error names the file, copy the path shown in the message. If no path is shown, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, look for a running process with that name, right-click it, and choose Open file location. - In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the location on the General tab.
- Compare that location with the folder where Wondershare UniConverter is installed. A path inside the application’s own directory is more plausible than one in
%TEMP%, Downloads, a browser cache, or an unexplained user-profile folder.
Do not move the file while investigating. Record the path, file size, modification date, and the application that appears to be launching it. This information helps distinguish a damaged installation from an unrelated process using the same name.
2. Check the publisher signature
- Right-click
WSPhantomJS.exeand select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present, select the signer, and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Wondershare Software Co., Ltd. An absent or invalid signature is a warning, not conclusive proof of infection; treat it as a reason to scan and verify the installation.
A signature check is stronger evidence than the filename, but it should be considered alongside the path and your installation history. If you never installed UniConverter and cannot explain the file, do not trust it merely because the name looks familiar.

3. Scan with Microsoft Defender
- Right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender if that option is available.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Update security intelligence, select Full scan, and let the scan finish. A full scan can take considerably longer than a single-file check.
- Review Protection history for the detection name, affected path, and action taken. Follow Defender’s quarantine or remediation instructions instead of restoring a file you do not recognize.
Microsoft documents detections such as Trojan:JS/PhantomStealer!MTB and describes Backdoor:Win32/Phantom capabilities including credential theft, system-level command execution, ransomware or cryptominer deployment, and disabling security services. Those threat names are not evidence that WSPhantomJS.exe itself is one of them; they explain why an unexplained executable should be scanned rather than assumed safe.

4. Use isolation only as an additional precaution
Windows Sandbox is a Microsoft-supported disposable environment for running untrusted applications separately from your main Windows installation. It can reduce exposure while you observe behavior, but opening a file in Sandbox does not certify that the file is safe. Do not sign in to sensitive accounts or provide credentials while testing an unknown executable.
What the common errors mean
Messages associated with this file include “WSPhantomJS.exe could not be found,” “failed to load,” “error loading,” and “the file is missing or corrupt.” Before repairing anything, capture the exact wording, the path in the message, and the application that produced it. A missing-file error from UniConverter has a different remedy from a startup alert caused by an unrelated program pointing to a deleted file.

Reported causes include accidental deletion, an uninstall that removed a shared file, incomplete or damaged installation, system crashes, storage corruption, outdated Windows components, and possible malware interference. The message alone cannot identify which cause applies.
How to fix wsphantomjs.exe errors
Step 1: Confirm the parent application and preserve evidence
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and search for Wondershare UniConverter.
- Write down its installed version and installation location. If the program is absent, do not download an individual
WSPhantomJS.exeto satisfy an error message. - Save the exact error text and path. If Defender has quarantined the file, note the detection and do not restore it until you have established that it is a false positive.
Step 2: Use System Restore or a known-good backup when the timing fits
If the problem began immediately after an installation, update, cleanup, or system change, a restore point from before that event may return the application and related system settings to a working state.

Win+R, enterrstrui.exe, and press Enter. - Choose a restore point dated before the first error, select Scan for affected programs when available, and review the changes.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows. If no suitable restore point exists, use a known-good backup instead of guessing at individual files.
System Restore does not replace personal documents and is not a malware-removal process. If the file is suspicious or Defender reports an active threat, scan and remediate that issue rather than relying on a restore alone.
Step 3: Reinstall Wondershare UniConverter
Reinstalling the parent application is the supported way to restore a missing or damaged bundled executable.
- Back up any UniConverter projects, presets, or output files you need.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Wondershare UniConverter and choose Uninstall. Follow the uninstaller, then restart Windows.
- Download the current UniConverter installer only from Wondershare’s official support or download channel. Avoid third-party “DLL” or “EXE fix” pages.
- Run the installer, allow it to recreate its complete file set, and restart if requested.
- Open UniConverter and repeat the action that previously produced the error. Check the new file’s path and signature if the alert returns.
If the uninstaller fails, remove only the application through Windows’ normal uninstall process and contact Wondershare support for activation or installation assistance. Do not delete random files from System32 or the Windows folder to force the uninstall to complete.

Step 4: Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available quality, security, and compatibility updates, and restart when prompted.
- Check again after the restart until Windows reports that no further updates are ready.
Outdated Windows components are listed as one possible contributor to loading failures. Updating is not a substitute for reinstalling a damaged UniConverter installation, but it removes a common compatibility variable.

Step 5: Run a complete malware check
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and update protection intelligence.
- Run a Full scan. If Windows Security offers an offline scan for a persistent threat, read the warning, save your work, and follow its restart instructions.
- After remediation, restart Windows and check Protection history for additional affected files or persistence locations.
If the computer shows unexpected account activity, disabled security services, unexplained network connections, or a file that keeps returning, disconnect it from the network. From a separate trusted device, change important passwords and obtain professional incident-response assistance. Do not continue experimenting on a potentially compromised system.
Step 6: Repair the cause of a leftover startup message
If UniConverter has been removed but Windows still displays a wsphantomjs.exe alert, the message may come from a stale shortcut, startup item, scheduled task, or another application that still references the old path.
- Check Settings > Apps > Startup and disable only entries you recognize as belonging to the removed application.
- Inspect the Startup folders by pressing
Win+R, enteringshell:startup, and then checking the equivalent all-users folder with administrative guidance if necessary. - Use Task Scheduler to look for tasks whose action points to the old UniConverter directory. Confirm the publisher and path before disabling a task.
- Restart and verify whether the message has stopped. If an unknown task recreates the executable, stop investigating locally and seek professional help.
Can you delete wsphantomjs.exe?
Do not delete it simply because the name is unfamiliar. If UniConverter is installed and working, removing a bundled executable can break the application and cause new errors. If you no longer want UniConverter, uninstall the complete application first and restart; that removes its files through the intended process.

Manual deletion can hide evidence and may not remove a process that recreates the file.
Why downloading a replacement executable is risky
Wondershare normally distributes UniConverter components through its installer. A standalone download from a file-directory or “missing DLL” site can be the wrong version, incorrectly copied, modified, or bundled with unwanted software. The file-directory guidance for this component warns that incorrectly copied EXE or CONFIG files can destabilize the application or operating system.
A page promising a “100% malware-free” replacement is not a substitute for provenance, a valid signature, and a clean installation from Wondershare. The safer sequence is to identify the parent application, scan the existing file, uninstall the damaged installation, restart, and reinstall the complete product from the official channel.
How PhantomJS relates to the name
PhantomJS is a separate open-source project whose official description calls it “a headless web browser scriptable with JavaScript.” It ran on Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD. The project is not the same thing as Wondershare UniConverter’s WSPhantomJS.exe.
PhantomJS released version 2.1 on January 23, 2016. Its maintainer later wrote, “Due to the lack of active contribution, I am going to archive this project soon,” and said PhantomJS 2.1.1 would remain the last known stable release. The repository is now archived and read-only. That history explains why the filename contains “PhantomJS,” but it does not prove that a copy named WSPhantomJS.exe is an official PhantomJS distribution or that installing PhantomJS will repair UniConverter.

Treat unexplained locations, invalid signatures, repeated recreation, and Defender detections as investigation or incident-response issues, not as ordinary missing-file problems.
