A copy that came with the official BIOS package for your exact ThinkPad model and carries a valid Lenovo signature is consistent with legitimate software. The filename alone proves nothing, however: an identically named file in a temporary folder, download directory, email attachment or unofficial “fix” package should be treated as untrusted until you verify its path, signer, version and hash.
An error that names winuptp64.exe does not necessarily mean that this executable is the root cause. Windows may be reporting a failure in a BIOS update, a device driver, hardware, or the operating system. Verify the file first, then apply the repair branch that matches the symptom instead of downloading a replacement executable from a random DLL or cracked-software site.

What winuptp64.exe is
Hybrid Analysis recorded a 64-bit Windows executable named WINUPTP64.EXE with Lenovo product metadata. Its ProductName is “ThinkPad BIOS Flash Update Utility,” its CompanyName is “Lenovo Group Limited,” and both its file and product version are listed as 30.0.22.0. The analyzed file was about 4.7 MiB, was submitted on 19 March 2018, and had the SHA-256 hash b617e9d883bb94267980f6a0ba61ca8223ef208b7c74239d8b290ca576777695. The report also records a successfully validated certificate chain.

The 64 suffix normally indicates the 64-bit build. It does not tell you whether the copy on your computer is authentic. Windows can run a malicious program with a familiar name, and an installer can place a legitimate utility in a different directory than the one used by Lenovo’s package. Identity must therefore be established from several independent clues.

Is winuptp64.exe safe?
It is conditionally trustworthy, not automatically safe. A Lenovo-signed copy located inside an official BIOS or driver package for the correct ThinkPad model is consistent with the legitimate utility. An unsigned copy, a file signed by an unexpected company, or a copy that arrived independently of a Lenovo update should not be executed until it has been investigated.

Do not rely on the filename, icon, file size or a single antivirus result. Microsoft recommends Microsoft Safety Scanner or Windows Defender Offline when comprehensive malware detection is needed. Defender Offline is useful when malicious software might be active before normal Windows startup.
Why Windows may report a winuptp64.exe error
The visible executable is often the component that exposed a deeper problem. A BIOS flash utility interacts with firmware, power management and low-level drivers, so a failure can be caused by a damaged download, an incorrect model package, a blocked driver, insufficient disk space, unstable memory, a failing storage device or an operating-system problem.
Microsoft’s crash guidance cautions that “The root cause of stop errors is rarely a user-mode process.” In other words, a message naming winuptp64.exe may identify the process that was running when Windows failed rather than the component that caused the failure. Treat the name as a lead to verify, not as proof that deleting or replacing the file will repair the system.

Common symptom patterns
- BIOS update fails or rolls back: suspect the model package, interrupted power, a damaged download, firmware prerequisites or a blocked low-level driver.
- Windows starts but shows an application error: check the file’s provenance and recent driver, firmware or software changes before reinstalling anything.
- A blue screen or sudden restart names the executable: examine the stop code, dump file, Event Viewer and hardware tests; the underlying fault may be a third-party driver or hardware.
- A security product flags the file: stop execution, preserve the path and hash, and scan before deciding whether the alert is a false positive.
- The message appears only after a BIOS update: use the exact ThinkPad model’s firmware instructions and consider rolling back a recently changed driver if Windows is unstable.
Do these checks before changing or deleting the file
- Write down the complete message. Record the exact wording, error code, stop code, time, whether the computer rebooted, and the full path displayed for winuptp64.exe. A path such as
C:DRIVERSFlash...has a different provenance from a random temporary directory. - Do not download a replacement. Keep the original file available for inspection. “DLL fix” sites and unofficial BIOS archives can provide modified or incompatible executables.
- Check whether a firmware operation was in progress. If the message appeared during a BIOS update, stop experimenting with unrelated cleaners or registry tools. Identify the ThinkPad model and use the package intended for that model.
- Protect your data and power source. Save work, connect AC power, and make a current backup before firmware or driver changes. Never force a shutdown while a BIOS update is actively writing firmware unless Lenovo’s recovery instructions specifically tell you to do so.
How to verify the local copy
1. Inspect the location and file properties
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the Location, Size, Created and Modified dates. Open the Details tab and record Product name, Company, File version and Original filename. A location inside the extracted Lenovo firmware package is more plausible than a user profile’s temporary or download directory, but location alone is not conclusive.
2. Check the digital signature
Open Properties > Digital Signatures, select the signature, choose Details, and verify that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Lenovo or Lenovo Group Limited. View the certificate details and check that the certificate chain is trusted and has not expired or been revoked according to Windows. An absent or invalid signature means you have not established that the file is Lenovo’s utility.
3. Calculate a SHA-256 hash
Open Windows PowerShell and run the following command with the complete path in quotes:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:pathtowinuptp64.exe"Compare the output with the known hash only if your file came from the same package and release as the analyzed sample. A different hash can simply mean a different Lenovo release; it is not by itself proof of malware. A matching hash is useful evidence, but still consider how the file reached the computer.
4. Compare with the official package
Identify the exact ThinkPad model and machine type from the label, BIOS setup or Windows System Information (msinfo32). Download the BIOS package intended for that model from Lenovo’s official support channel, verify the package’s published details, and compare the extracted executable’s name, signer, version and hash. Do not use a package for a similar-looking model or a different regional release without confirming compatibility.

Manual fixes for a BIOS-update failure
Use the correct firmware package
Re-download the BIOS update for the exact ThinkPad model and confirm that the package is intended for your current operating-system and firmware state. If the downloaded archive is incomplete or its signature fails, discard it and obtain a fresh copy. Follow Lenovo’s instructions for prerequisites, battery level, AC power and restart behavior.
Remove avoidable interruptions
Close applications, disconnect unnecessary peripherals and use a reliable AC connection. Do not run a BIOS flash while the system is unstable, repeatedly losing power or showing signs of failing storage. If the utility reports that the firmware is newer, older or incompatible, stop rather than forcing the operation.
Install Windows and device updates
After confirming the package, install pending Windows updates and review recently changed drivers. A low-level driver can prevent a firmware utility from working or can cause the crash that appears to implicate winuptp64.exe. Restart when Windows requests it, then retry only if the ThinkPad package still matches the model.
If the update was interrupted
Do not immediately delete firmware files or repeatedly launch the utility. Record what happened, preserve the error text and consult Lenovo’s recovery procedure for that model. Firmware recovery steps vary by ThinkPad generation; using instructions for another model can make the situation worse.
Manual fixes for startup errors and crashes
Capture the stop code and crash evidence
For a blue screen or restart, write down the stop code and any driver name shown. In Windows, open Event Viewer by searching for it, then inspect Windows Logs > System around the failure time. Reliability Monitor can show the application or Windows failure timeline. If Windows created a dump file, preserve it before using cleanup software so that a technician can analyze it.

Check drivers and recently changed hardware
Open Device Manager, expand the categories related to the recent change, and inspect warnings or rollback options. If the problem started after a driver update, use the device’s Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver option when available, or reinstall the previous Lenovo-provided driver. Do not install a driver from an unofficial bundle merely because its filename resembles the one in the error.
Test memory, storage and free space
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic for suspected memory errors and use the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when a drive is reporting errors. Ensure that the system drive has enough free space for temporary firmware and update files. Hardware tests do not prove that winuptp64.exe is faulty; they help identify the underlying conditions that can make a low-level utility fail.
Repair Windows components only after evidence points there
If system files or servicing operations are failing beyond the BIOS utility, use Microsoft’s documented Windows recovery and system-file repair procedures for your version of Windows. Keep a backup and record the results. Do not replace a system file with a download that merely has the same name.

- Disconnect the computer from networks if you suspect active malicious behavior, while preserving any information needed for support.
- Do not run the suspicious executable again and do not grant it administrator approval.
- Start a full Microsoft Defender scan. If malware may be active before Windows loads, use Windows Defender Offline. Microsoft Safety Scanner is another on-demand option; download a current copy from Microsoft when you are ready to scan.
- Quarantine or remove detections according to the scanner’s guidance. Keep the original path, hash and signature details for investigation rather than deleting evidence immediately.
- After cleanup, change important passwords from a known-clean device if the suspicious file was executed, and apply pending Windows and firmware updates through official channels.
A clean scan does not authenticate an unsigned file, and a detection does not prove that every Lenovo utility with a similar name is malicious. Make the decision using provenance, signature, metadata, hash and behavior together.

Use Windows Recovery Environment or Safe Mode rather than repeatedly starting the normal desktop. From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, use Startup Settings to enter Safe Mode, then remove or roll back the recently changed driver if that is the documented cause. System Restore can return Windows to an earlier restore point when one exists. If the failure began during a BIOS operation, prioritize the ThinkPad model’s firmware-recovery instructions and avoid generic boot-repair downloads.
When recovery tools cannot start, use another computer to create official Windows installation or recovery media, then choose the repair options instead of immediately reinstalling. A clean installation can erase data and does not repair a firmware problem, so back up files and identify whether the fault is Windows, storage, memory, a driver or the BIOS before choosing it.
How Microsoft’s crash statistics should be read
Microsoft’s crash-root-cause analysis attributes approximately 70% of the cases it studied to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code and 15% to unknown causes. Microsoft does not state a year for those figures on the referenced page, and they are an analysis of Microsoft’s cases rather than a universal rate for every Windows computer. They explain why an executable named in a crash message may be an innocent participant while a driver or hardware fault is the real cause.
The same distinction applies to winuptp64.exe: if the file is a correctly signed Lenovo utility, investigate the firmware package, drivers, hardware and Windows state before blaming the process itself. If the file fails identity checks, treat the security problem first.

- Do not delete winuptp64.exe solely because its name appears in an error.
- Do not replace it with a file from a DLL-download, cracked-software or “PC fixer” site.
- Do not force a BIOS flash for a different ThinkPad model, region or firmware branch.
- Do not assume that a valid filename, a matching icon or one clean antivirus result proves safety.
- Do not interrupt power during an active firmware write unless the model-specific recovery instructions require it.
- Do not suppress a security warning simply to make the error disappear; preserve the file and verify its signer and hash.
Prevent future winuptp64.exe problems
- Keep a record of your ThinkPad model, machine type, BIOS version and recent driver changes.

Verify those details first. Then use the exact-model Lenovo firmware instructions for update failures, Microsoft’s scanning tools for suspicious files, and Windows recovery, driver rollback and hardware diagnostics when the symptom is a crash or startup failure. The executable named in the message may be the messenger rather than the cause.
