Wii MotionPlus is a detachable motion-sensing accessory for the original Wii Remote. It gives specially designed games a finer representation of the controller’s movement. Nintendo also sold the Wii Remote Plus, which builds the same functionality into the controller instead of using a separate attachment.
Support is game-specific, not automatic. Nintendo says to look for the Wii MotionPlus icon on the packaging of the exact regional release. Confirmed examples include Wii Sports Resort, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Virtua Tennis 2009, Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.

What Wii MotionPlus actually does
An original Wii Remote detects movement, but MotionPlus adds a more detailed motion-sensing capability for software written to use it. The accessory works with the original remote; it is not a standalone controller and it does not turn every Wii game into a MotionPlus game.

There is no general system-wide enhancement that makes ordinary Wii software more precise.

Nintendo of Europe described the intended effect in its 2009 announcement through a quotation from Laurent Fischer, then Managing Director, Marketing & PR: “Wii MotionPlus will create that feeling again, taking gameplay to a new level of realism.” That statement is a description of the accessory’s goal, not a promise that every game or every mode uses its sensing data.
MotionPlus is an attachment, not a new console controller
The detachable unit is designed for an original Wii Remote. The practical distinction matters when buying used hardware: a listing for “MotionPlus” may mean the add-on alone, while a listing for “Wii Remote Plus” means a complete controller with the capability integrated. Nintendo describes Wii Remote Plus as replacing the combination of an original Wii Remote and the separate MotionPlus add-on.

For a game that accepts either form, the choice is mainly about the hardware you already own and whether you prefer an add-on or an integrated controller. Neither option makes an unsupported game MotionPlus-compatible.

The official material identifies several clear examples, but it does not establish a complete worldwide list. The titles below are therefore best treated as documented examples rather than a definitive catalog of every compatible release.

Wii Sports Resort
Wii Sports Resort is the clearest general demonstration of the accessory. Its manual instructs players to attach Wii MotionPlus whenever they play, and it presents 12 sports and activities. The number 12 describes the contents of that game; it is not evidence that 12 Wii titles support MotionPlus.
If you are buying a used copy, check both the disc and the controller requirement. Owning the game alone does not provide the sensing hardware. An original Wii Remote needs the detachable accessory, while a Wii Remote Plus supplies the integrated alternative.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Nintendo’s support information is explicit: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword requires a Nunchuk and either Wii MotionPlus or Wii Remote Plus. This makes it different from a title where MotionPlus is merely an optional enhancement. Plan for all of the required controller hardware before starting the game.

A Wii Remote Plus satisfies the MotionPlus part of the requirement, but it does not replace the Nunchuk. With the detachable arrangement, you need an original Wii Remote, the MotionPlus accessory and a Nunchuk.

Other Nintendo-listed examples
Nintendo of Europe’s 2009 announcement also named Virtua Tennis 2009, Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 as compatible. The announcement establishes Nintendo’s compatibility claim for those examples, but it does not say that every gameplay mode, feature or control option depends on MotionPlus. It is more accurate to call them Nintendo-listed compatible games than to promise a particular level of integration.
How to check whether another game supports it
The most reliable check is the packaging for the specific regional release you are considering. Nintendo says games that take advantage of MotionPlus carry the Wii MotionPlus icon on their packaging. A title without that icon should not be expected to gain enhanced motion control from the accessory.
- Identify the exact edition. Regional packaging can differ, so inspect the release you will actually buy rather than relying on a photograph or description for another market.
- Look for Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus icon. Treat the icon as the compatibility signal Nintendo provides for that edition.
- Read the controller requirements. An icon can establish support without telling you whether a Nunchuk or another controller is also needed.
- Match the requirement to your hardware. Decide whether you will use an original Wii Remote with the add-on or a Wii Remote Plus.
- Ask the seller for a clear package photograph when buying used. If the icon or required accessories cannot be confirmed, consider compatibility unverified rather than assuming it.
Nintendo maintains a manuals catalog that includes documentation for Wii MotionPlus, Wii Sports Resort, FlingSmash and Skyward Sword, among other Wii products. That catalog is a documentation index, not a compatibility database. The presence of a manual there does not prove that the corresponding game uses MotionPlus.

If you already own an original Wii Remote
The detachable MotionPlus accessory is the direct route. Confirm that the attachment is included and functional, then check the game’s packaging for the icon and any additional controller requirements. For Skyward Sword, add a Nunchuk to the plan.

If you do not own the attachment
A Wii Remote Plus is the integrated alternative where the game accepts it. It removes the need to combine an original remote with a separate accessory, but it remains a controller rather than an attachment. Check that the specific game recognizes Wii Remote Plus and that any other required accessory is present.
If you are buying pre-owned hardware
- Confirm whether the listing is for the MotionPlus add-on, an original Wii Remote, a Wii Remote Plus, or a bundle.
- Check that the model shown is genuine and that the physical parts match the description.
- Ask whether the controller and accessory function; an attractive listing is not proof of working motion sensing.
- For Skyward Sword, verify the Nunchuk separately.
- Do not infer current retail availability from old Nintendo announcements; the cited official material does not verify present stock.
What MotionPlus does not do
It does not upgrade every Wii title
MotionPlus only benefits software designed to use it. A game without Nintendo’s packaging icon should not be expected to receive enhanced movement simply because the accessory is connected. This is the most important misconception to avoid when assembling a used Wii setup.
It does not prove that every feature uses motion data
For the three games named in Nintendo of Europe’s 2009 announcement, the available statement identifies compatibility but does not explain whether support applies to the whole game, selected modes or particular features. Avoid translating “compatible” into a promise about every control or gameplay situation.
A manual listing is not a compatibility list
A Nintendo-hosted manual can be useful documentation, but a catalog entry alone does not establish MotionPlus support. This is why a manual listing for a title such as FlingSmash should not be treated as proof without the packaging or another explicit compatibility statement.

A practical buying and setup checklist
- Start with the game. Write down the exact title and regional edition you intend to play.
- Confirm the icon. Inspect the package for the Wii MotionPlus mark Nintendo specifies.
- List every controller requirement. For Skyward Sword, that list includes MotionPlus or Wii Remote Plus and a Nunchuk.
- Choose the controller format. Use the detachable accessory with an original Wii Remote, or choose Wii Remote Plus as the integrated option.
- Check completeness. Used listings should account for the remote, attachment and any Nunchuk required by the game.
- Test before relying on it. Confirm that the controller and accessory operate correctly rather than assuming a second-hand part works.
This process prevents the common mismatch of owning the right disc but the wrong controller arrangement.
Why there is no single definitive worldwide list
The official pages consulted identify specific games and explain Nintendo’s packaging-icon check, but they do not publish one exhaustive worldwide catalog covering every full or partial MotionPlus implementation. Releases can differ by region, and an announcement that names a compatible title may not describe how extensively the feature is used.
Consequently, a responsible answer separates confirmed examples from an exhaustive claim. Wii Sports Resort and Skyward Sword have clear requirements in Nintendo documentation. The three sports titles named in the 2009 European announcement are documented compatible examples. For any other game, verify the packaging of the edition you are buying.
The bottom line for Wii owners
Wii MotionPlus is a detachable add-on for an original Wii Remote that provides finer motion sensing in games built for it. Wii Remote Plus offers the same idea in an integrated controller. Start with the game’s packaging, not the accessory: Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus icon is the practical compatibility test. Wii Sports Resort uses the accessory, Skyward Sword requires MotionPlus or Wii Remote Plus plus a Nunchuk, and Nintendo also listed Virtua Tennis 2009, Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 as compatible examples. No official source here supports treating that group as a complete global list.
