wic_x64_enu.exe is the legacy 64-bit English redistributable installer for Microsoft’s Windows Imaging Component (WIC). WIC supplies Windows and applications with imaging and codec functions; the executable is normally a prerequisite package, not a background process you should see running every day.
The filename alone does not establish that a copy is safe. Trust depends on where you obtained it and whether its digital signature is valid. If Setup reports that it cannot find update.inf, start with a clean x64 download and an elevated retry, then repair Windows components with DISM followed by System File Checker if the package itself is not the problem.

- x64 indicates the 64-bit package. It is intended for 64-bit Windows and applications that require that architecture.
- enu identifies the English-language package.
- .exe means the download is a self-extracting or directly runnable installer rather than a Windows service or a DLL loaded continuously by the operating system.
Microsoft documentation and installation guidance for enterprise software identify wic_x64_enu.exe as a legacy WIC prerequisite. One Microsoft Q&A report describes installing the WIC package before .NET 4.0 so that the .NET installation could proceed. A Micro Focus HP ALM Performance Center guide lists the same file as its x64 WIC prerequisite and gives the unattended command wic_x64_enu.exe /q /norestart.

That history explains why the file may appear in an old application’s prerequisites folder, on installation media, or in a setup log even though you did not deliberately search for a WIC installer. It is not, by itself, evidence of malware or of a current Windows process. It is also not a replacement for the WIC components already present in Windows; it is a redistributable installer used by software that needs a particular WIC prerequisite.
Is wic_x64_enu.exe safe?
A legitimate copy obtained from Microsoft’s Download Center or bundled in a trusted application’s signed installer is consistent with the known WIC prerequisite. An unexpected copy from a random download site, email attachment, temporary folder or peer-to-peer source should be treated as untrusted until you verify it.
Use the following checks before running any copy:
- Trace the source. Prefer the Microsoft Download Center or the original software vendor’s official installation media. If the file came from an old DVD, network share or backup, confirm that the media belongs to the application you are installing.
- Inspect the signature. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details. Windows should report that the signature is valid. A missing, invalid or unexpected signer is a reason not to run the file.
- Check the download path and extension. Make sure the item is actually named
wic_x64_enu.exe, not a double extension such aswic_x64_enu.exe.scror an executable with a misleading icon. - Scan it. Use the current security software on the computer and, where available, your organization’s malware-analysis process. A clean scan is useful evidence but does not replace checking provenance and the signature.
- Do not rely on a hash that is not published for your copy. The available documentation does not establish a current SHA-256 value or certificate fingerprint for this legacy executable, so there is no responsible fingerprint to compare here.
If the file fails the signature or provenance checks, delete or quarantine it and obtain a fresh package from Microsoft or the known application’s vendor. Do not try to make an untrusted copy work by disabling security software or bypassing Windows warnings.
What the common errors mean
“Setup could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system.”
This message means the installer expected an update.inf file and could not locate or use it. Microsoft Q&A records the message in connection with a failed or corrupted WIC download. The package may be incomplete, damaged during transfer, extracted incorrectly, or the wrong package for the system.

The installer opens and then closes, or reports that the package is not applicable
Architecture is the first thing to check. The file is the x64 package; it is not the correct choice for a 32-bit installation. A setup launched from a damaged application bundle can also fail before it presents a useful message.
A .NET installation fails after WIC is skipped
Some older installers list WIC as a prerequisite and will not complete a .NET installation until it is present. Installing a clean WIC package first, then rerunning the .NET setup, is the appropriate sequence when the application’s documentation requires it.
WIC API or image errors appear after installation
WIC’s API exposes error conditions such as access denied, bad image, bad header and unknown image format. Those codes can indicate a damaged image, an unsupported codec, a permissions problem or a broken Windows component; they do not automatically mean that wic_x64_enu.exe itself is malicious.

Before changing Windows: identify the failure layer
Use the least invasive remedy that matches the symptom. This avoids repairing the operating system when the actual problem is only a bad download.

Manual fix 1: obtain and prepare a clean package
- Confirm the requirement. Read the application’s prerequisite list or setup message. If it specifically requests the x64 WIC redistributable, do not substitute an unrelated codec pack.
- Use an authoritative source. Download from Microsoft’s Download Center or the original software vendor. Avoid mirrors that rename installers or wrap them in download managers.
- Confirm the machine architecture. In Windows, open Settings → System → About and inspect System type. A 64-bit operating system can run the x64 package. A 32-bit operating system cannot use it as its native prerequisite.
- Save the file locally. Put it in a simple folder such as
C:Users<your-account>DownloadsWICrather than launching it from a browser’s temporary location, removable media or a disconnected network share. - Check Properties. Confirm the file is not blocked by an attachment mark in the General tab, and review the Digital Signatures tab as described above. If you trust the source and Windows shows an Unblock option, select it, choose Apply, and reopen Properties to confirm the change.
- Run it elevated. Right-click
wic_x64_enu.exeand choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt and allow the installer to finish without closing the window.
For a controlled deployment, an administrator can use wic_x64_enu.exe /q /norestart. The /q switch requests quiet operation and /norestart prevents the package from restarting Windows automatically. Test that command on one machine first, because quiet mode suppresses prompts that would otherwise explain a failure.
Manual fix 2: resolve an update.inf error
When Setup says it cannot find update.inf, do not create a blank file or copy one from another installer. The missing file is part of the package’s expected contents; manufacturing a replacement can leave an incomplete or unsafe installation.
- Cancel the installer and delete the damaged download.
- Clear only the incomplete WIC package, not unrelated application folders.
- Download the x64 English package again from Microsoft or the original vendor over a stable HTTPS connection.
- Compare the new file’s size with the value shown by the official download page or the vendor’s installation media, if one is provided. The available documentation does not establish a universal file size, so do not treat an internet value as a definitive test.
- Save the new copy locally, verify its signature and run it as administrator.
- If the package is supplied inside another application’s installer, copy the complete installer set to a local folder and rerun the parent setup. Do not copy only the executable if the vendor’s package expects companion files.
If a freshly downloaded, correctly signed package fails with the same message on several attempts, the problem may be in Windows servicing rather than in the transfer. Continue with the component repair sequence below.

Microsoft Support documents DISM followed by System File Checker as the repair order. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source; running SFC first can leave it without a healthy source.

Run DISM
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - At the elevated prompt, enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- Press Enter and let the operation complete. Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.
- Read the final status. If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, proceed to SFC. If it cannot find source files, use the matching repair-source form described below.
Run System File Checker
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent and note whether Windows repaired files, found no violations, or could not repair some files.
- Restart Windows if requested, then retry the WIC or dependent .NET installation.
Do not interrupt either command by closing the console or powering off the computer. If SFC still reports unrepaired files after DISM succeeds, restart once and run SFC again; persistent failures should be treated as a broader servicing problem rather than a reason to download random replacement DLLs.
Use a repair source when Windows Update cannot supply one
DISM normally obtains repair content through Windows Update. Microsoft Support documents an alternative that points DISM at a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessReplace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition, architecture and servicing level. The source must contain valid Windows component files; an arbitrary folder or a source from a different release can make repair fail or introduce mismatched components. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow again.

Some WIC and .NET prerequisite failures are really update-side failures. Back up important files before servicing changes, and ensure you can approve administrator prompts.

- Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and apply the fixes it recommends.
- Restart the computer and check for updates again.
- If the troubleshooter indicates a damaged update cache, stop the update-related services using the documented Windows administration method, rename or clear
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, restart the services, and retry Windows Update. Change the cache only when corruption is suspected; deleting it routinely is unnecessary. - Retry the WIC installer after Windows Update has completed or after the update error is resolved.
Windows Update is an essential Windows component for security, stability and access to current features. If update repair repeatedly fails, capture the exact error code and seek Windows servicing support rather than repeatedly replacing the WIC executable.
Manual fix 5: complete the dependent installation safely
Once WIC installs without an error, rerun the application or .NET setup that requested it. Use the same administrator account and installation source. If the dependent installer still fails:
- Confirm that the application expects the English x64 WIC prerequisite rather than an x86 or another-language package.
- Run the parent installer from a local folder containing all of its files.
- Restart Windows once if the WIC setup requested or performed servicing changes.
- Record the exact new message before changing another component; a different error usually identifies a different layer.
Do not install several redistributable variants at random. Each additional package makes it harder to determine which prerequisite the application actually needs.
When the problem is not the installer
Only one image fails
Test the application with a known-good image. If other images open normally, investigate the damaged file, unsupported format or missing codec named by the application. Reinstalling WIC will not repair a corrupt image.
Several imaging applications fail
Multiple failures point more strongly toward Windows component damage, permissions or a shared codec problem. Run DISM and SFC in the documented order, then apply Windows Update troubleshooting if servicing errors remain.
The file is in a suspicious location
A copy in a browser cache, a temporary folder or an unexpected user-profile subdirectory deserves the same provenance and signature checks as any download. If you cannot establish where it came from, do not run it simply because the name looks familiar.
The installer requests a restart
Save work and allow the restart when practical. In managed environments, the documented quiet command’s /norestart switch can defer the reboot, but the prerequisite may not be usable until Windows has restarted and completed pending servicing operations.
