Wi-Fi is a family of wireless local-area networking technologies that lets compatible devices communicate over radio, based on IEEE 802.11 standards. It connects devices to a nearby network; that network may also connect to the internet, but Wi-Fi and internet service are not the same thing.

What Wi-Fi means

Wi-Fi is the familiar name for wireless networking technology associated with the IEEE 802.11 standards. IEEE 802.11 specifies how devices access the wireless medium and how their physical-layer radio communication works. IEEE describes its 802.11 working group as responsible for wireless local-area networking standards; see IEEE 802.11 Working Group.

Wi-Fi is not formally established here as an abbreviation for “Wireless Fidelity.” The useful definition is the technology: a way for compatible devices to exchange data wirelessly within a local network.

Wi-Fi versus the internet

Wi-Fi is the local wireless link between devices and a nearby access point. The internet is a global network of networks reached through an internet service provider. A home can have working Wi-Fi even when its broadband connection is down: devices may still communicate with each other locally, but online services will be unavailable.

In a typical home, a wireless router or access point provides Wi-Fi. A router may also connect that local network to a modem or broadband gateway, which in turn connects to an internet service. Equipment arrangements vary, and some functions may be combined in one device.

How a typical Wi-Fi connection works

  1. A device joins the local network. A phone, computer, television, or other compatible client connects to a Wi-Fi network provided by a router or access point.
  2. Radio carries data locally. The device and access point exchange data wirelessly, rather than needing a cable between each device.
  3. The router directs traffic. For communication with the internet, the router forwards data through the home’s broadband connection. For local tasks, such as reaching a network printer, traffic may stay within the local network.

This is a common arrangement, not a requirement for every Wi-Fi network. Access points can serve local networks in offices, campuses, and public hotspots as well as homes.

Wi-Fi bands and generation labels

Wi-Fi is an evolving standards family, not one fixed speed or set of features. IEEE lists IEEE 802.11-2024 as an active standard published on April 28, 2025. It incorporates amendments published between 2021 and 2024. IEEE working-group materials identify IEEE 802.11be-2024 as Wi-Fi 7.

Wi-Fi products can support different radio bands, including 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz. Wi-Fi Alliance certification records list tested capabilities for particular products, but those records do not mean every router or client supports every band. Availability and use of spectrum also depend on local regulations and the capabilities of the specific product.

What to check when choosing Wi-Fi equipment

Match the equipment to the devices and network you actually use. Useful checks include:

Best Value
TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Generation and compatibility: Confirm which Wi-Fi generations the router supports and whether your client devices can use them.
  • Supported bands: Check the bands supported by both router and clients, and whether those bands are permitted and available where you live.
  • Coverage needs: Consider the size and layout of the area you need to cover, rather than assuming a generation label guarantees a signal in every room.
  • Connected devices and activities: Account for how many devices use the network and what they do, such as video calls, streaming, or local file access.
  • Broadband plan: Compare the plan’s internet speed with your needs. Replacing a router cannot raise the speed supplied by your broadband service itself.

Radio conditions, device support, router placement, building materials, and interference can affect the experience. The standards and certification information cited above do not quantify how much any one factor will change performance in a particular home.
