Miracast lets a compatible phone, computer, or other source send screen content or media to a compatible TV, projector, or receiver. Devices can connect directly using Wi-Fi Direct, so a Miracast connection does not inherently require an existing Wi-Fi network.
What does Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast mean?
Miracast is a wireless-display solution for sharing a device’s screen or multimedia on another display. Typical uses include showing phone photos on a television or presenting a laptop screen on a conference-room projector. The Wi-Fi Alliance’s 2012 launch announcement described Miracast devices connecting directly without cables or a connection to an existing Wi-Fi network: Wi-Fi Alliance launch announcement.

“Wi-Fi CERTIFIED” means a product has completed Wi-Fi Alliance certification testing for the capabilities listed for that product. Certification is product-specific, not a blanket promise that every two devices will work together in every setup. For instance, Microsoft’s Miracast Dongle HD-10 certification record lists Miracast as an application and Wi-Fi Direct as an alternative topology: Wi-Fi Alliance product finder.

How does a Miracast connection work?
One device sends; another receives
A Miracast connection has a source and a display role. The source—such as a phone or laptop—sends the display content. The display endpoint may be a television, projector, or dedicated receiver. Certification records can identify products as supporting the source role, the display role, or both.

- Wirelessly display content from a phone, tablet, or laptop onto a bigger screen with the ScreenCast 4K Wireless Display Adapter. Note: Please use this wireless display adapter in the same room to prevent signal obstruction by walls. Wireless transmission distance of up to 50 ft./15m in an open environment
- With its support of multiple wireless display standards (Miracast, AirPlay, and Chromecast), this wireless display adapter is compatible with devices and TVs you already own, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and other cast compatible laptops, tablets, and mobile phones.
- Featuring customizable background and PIN code functions, this allows you to establish your visual style that leaves a lasting impression and ensures a secure presentation experience. Please note that the PIN code function is exclusive to Miracast. If these two functions are not visible in the Settings Menu, please upgrade to the latest firmware.
- In addition to its compact design, the ScreenCast 4K Wireless Display Adapter features an external antenna for enhanced signal coverage, making it perfect for home, office, and travel.
- Just plug in the adapter, power, and connect to the ScreenCast 4K to start Miracast casting. AirPlay and Google Cast (Chromecast) require Wi-Fi configuration. Please follow the setup instructions in the manual.
Wi-Fi Direct can connect the endpoints directly
Miracast uses Wi-Fi Direct for a direct device-to-device connection. In that connection model, an existing Wi-Fi network is not required. This does not mean every Miracast setup is guaranteed to operate without any network infrastructure: implementations can also involve network infrastructure, and the precise setup depends on the devices. The Wi-Fi Alliance explains the direct-connection model in its launch announcement.
Both endpoints need compatible support
It is not enough for only the sending device or only the screen to support Miracast. Both need suitable functionality for their respective roles. Microsoft’s Windows documentation describes Wi-Fi Direct discovery, pairing, and reconnect requirements, and notes that Miracast sink capability is relevant to device support. Drivers and implementation can affect whether projection works reliably: Microsoft: Wireless projection.

What performance should you expect?
A 2017 Wi-Fi Alliance technical overview describes certification test thresholds, not guaranteed real-world performance for every device or environment. Its criteria include end-to-end video latency of no more than 250 milliseconds at the highest supported resolution and frame rate, video frame drops below 1.5 percent, and audio timing no more than 45 milliseconds ahead of video or 125 milliseconds behind it. Actual results depend on the devices, their implementation, and conditions during use. The overview is hosted by Barco and carries Wi-Fi Alliance copyright: Wi-Fi Alliance Miracast technical overview (2017).
Does my TV support Miracast?
Check the exact TV or receiver model’s specifications for Miracast support and whether it can act as a display endpoint. Do not infer certification from a generic “wireless display” description or assume all smart TVs support Miracast. If the screen lacks Miracast reception, a Miracast wireless display adapter or receiver may add that capability, provided it is compatible with the sending device and the display’s inputs. A historical product such as Microsoft’s HD-10 illustrates the receiver category; its certification record is not evidence of current availability or compatibility with a particular product you might buy.

What to check before choosing a Miracast receiver
- Miracast support and role: Confirm that the receiver supports Miracast display reception and that the sending device supports the source role.
- Your specific devices: Check compatibility with your exact phone or PC, operating system, receiver, and display input. On Windows, wireless projection depends on the relevant capabilities and drivers.
- Resolution and use: Compare the supported resolution and set expectations for performance; certification thresholds are not a promise of identical results in every environment.
- Connection setup: Decide whether direct Wi-Fi Direct operation meets your needs or whether your implementation uses network infrastructure.
Current adapter models, prices, and product-by-product compatibility are not established by the cited certification and technical materials, so verify those details against the manufacturers’ specifications before purchasing.
