As of October 7, 2026, it is still in development, so its final specifications and real-world performance are not settled. If you need a router upgrade now, compare Wi-Fi 7 routers and mesh systems against your home’s coverage, devices, and wired-network needs; if your current setup works, there may be no reason to replace it yet.
What is Wi-Fi 8?
Wi-Fi 8 is the common industry label for IEEE P802.11bn, an amendment project titled “Ultra High Reliability.” The IEEE lists it as an active project, not a finalized standard. The name refers to the generation in development; it does not mean that final specifications, certification criteria, or consumer performance have been settled. IEEE’s project timeline is the primary source for its standards status.

The goal is to improve connection reliability and consistency, particularly in challenging or crowded wireless environments. MediaTek describes possible applications including extended reality (XR), industrial automation, and e-health, but those are potential use cases—not evidence of a particular improvement in a typical home. Actual results will depend on the final standard, router and client implementations, radio conditions, network setup, and internet service. MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 8 white paper and Qualcomm’s white paper describe the proposed direction from industry participants.
Where the Wi-Fi 8 standard stands
As of October 7, 2026, the IEEE timeline lists P802.11bn at draft D2.0. It records a 77% draft-ballot snapshot alongside the September 2, 2026 milestone; that is a standards-process figure, not a measure of product reliability or consumer adoption. The timeline also includes future projected milestones. MediaTek’s white paper gives September 2028 as a target final approval date, which is a projection rather than a guaranteed completion or product-launch date. Check the IEEE timeline for the current project status.

A product announced with a Wi-Fi 8 label does not establish that the standard is final or that the product is certified to its eventual specification. A May 2026 Tom’s Hardware report on TP-Link’s roadmap described an Archer 8 router tentatively expected in October 2026, pending FCC approval, and other products planned for 2027. A roadmap is not confirmation of current retail stock, final specifications, certification, or price; check the manufacturer and current retailer listings for those details.
Why might Wi-Fi 8 matter?
The case for Wi-Fi 8 is more dependable service, not a guaranteed peak-speed increase. That could be useful in settings where devices move between access points, multiple networks compete for airtime, or a short interruption matters. But an unfinished standard and vendor-described use cases cannot tell you how a future consumer router will perform in your home. The available sources do not establish measured home performance or an independent comparison of Wi-Fi 8 hardware.

A new Wi-Fi generation cannot by itself fix every weak connection. A household’s experience can also be limited by router placement, walls, interference, client-device capabilities, wired backhaul, configuration, or the internet connection. Identify the bottleneck before treating a newer generation label as the solution.

If you need an upgrade before the Wi-Fi 8 standard is complete, Wi-Fi 7 is the current published-standard category to consider. IEEE identifies 802.11be-2024 as a published standard. Its description specifies at least one operating mode with maximum throughput of at least 30 Gbit/s at the MAC service access point. That is a standard-level capability, not the speed a particular router or household broadband connection will necessarily deliver. The standard also specifies backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE 802.11 devices across the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. See the IEEE 802.11-2024 catalog and IEEE’s 802.11be description.

- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to deliver the full speed of your internet plan across a medium to large home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart devices.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- WIFI 7 SPEED FOR TODAY'S FASTEST INTERNET PLANS: Up to 6.5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. Keeps every device connected at the same time with MU-MIMO and OFDMA. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Wi-Fi 7 is a category to compare, not a blanket reason to upgrade. A working router may already meet your needs. TechRadar’s September 2026 guidance discusses waiting and Wi-Fi 7 options, including the TP-Link BE10000 Wi-Fi 7 Range Extender RE653BE, but a range extender is relevant only if it suits the particular coverage problem. Some layouts may be better served by a mesh system or an additional access point. Read TechRadar’s Wi-Fi 8 and upgrade guidance.

Compare the factors that affect your choice
- Coverage and layout: Decide whether one router can serve the space or whether a mesh or multi-access-point setup is more appropriate. Node placement matters.
- Reliability and congestion: Prefer relevant independent tests in a layout similar to yours over a peak-rate label alone.
- Client compatibility: A new router cannot give older phones, computers, or other clients support for capabilities they lack.
- Wired networking: Check WAN and LAN port speeds, and whether you need wired backhaul or fast local transfers.
- Price and need: Compare current local prices and keep existing equipment if it already works well. No particular model is established here as the cheapest or best value.
