Vampire: The Masquerade is a tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) about vampiric horror. Each player portrays a vampire, while a Storyteller guides a continuing story called a chronicle. You decide how your character hunts, survives rival vampires and hunters, pursues power, and protects—or abandons—what remains of their humanity.
The title’s three key terms describe different parts of that premise: the Masquerade is the secrecy that hides vampires from ordinary people, a clan is a vampire’s bloodline, and a sect is a political alignment. Understanding that distinction is more useful than memorizing lore, especially when you are choosing a character or joining an existing group.

What you actually do in the game
Vampire: The Masquerade is played around a table or through a virtual tabletop. Players create Kindred—vampires in the setting’s terminology—and describe what they say and do. One person is the Storyteller. That person presents locations, non-player characters, dangers and consequences, then interprets the group’s choices and the rules.
A chronicle can be a short mystery, a political campaign lasting months, or anything between. There is no single board, map or victory condition. The drama comes from decisions that have costs: feeding may keep a character alive but endanger a human, using supernatural powers may expose the vampire, and accepting help from a rival may create a debt that lasts for years.

The recurring dramatic loop
- Find a problem. A coterie (the player characters’ group) may need to investigate a suspicious killing, protect territory, negotiate with another faction or locate safe blood.
- Choose an approach. Players can use investigation, persuasion, intimidation, stealth, violence, supernatural abilities or alliances. The rules resolve uncertain actions rather than replacing the players’ decisions.
- Pay a price. Failure can cost Health, Willpower, resources, territory, trust or secrecy. Success can create new obligations instead of ending the danger.
- Manage the aftermath. The group decides how to repair relationships, conceal evidence and deal with hunger before the next crisis.
The official game description calls Vampire: The Masquerade “A Storytelling Game of Vampiric Horror.” Its central pressures are hunger, survival, power, humanity, rival Kindred, political danger and hunters. Those pressures make it different from a game in which being a vampire simply grants a list of powers.
What the rules represent
Characters have supernatural capabilities, but the game keeps ordinary problems important. A vampire may be physically formidable and still need an invitation to enter a building, a believable explanation for missing time, a source of blood and a way to avoid being recognized. The exact dice, traits and procedures depend on the edition your group uses.
The Masquerade, in plain language
The Masquerade is the secrecy that keeps vampires’ existence hidden from human society. It is the setting’s basic survival arrangement: Kindred live among mortals, but ordinary people are not supposed to learn that vampires are real.

In practical play, secrecy is a source of ongoing risk. A public display of supernatural power, a body that cannot be explained or a witness who talks can bring hunters’ attention and create a crisis for an entire local community.
Why secrecy creates stories
- Feeding has consequences. A character needs blood, but choosing a victim, a hunting ground or a method can affect innocent people and local politics.
- Evidence must be controlled. The coterie may need to erase recordings, persuade witnesses or answer questions from other vampires.
- One person’s mistake can endanger everyone. The Masquerade is communal. A breach can threaten allies and rivals who would otherwise have no reason to cooperate.
- Hunters turn exposure into action. Once people suspect that something is wrong, the story can shift from negotiation and investigation to flight, defense or retaliation.
For example, a character who uses a supernatural ability in a crowded station may solve an immediate problem but leave camera footage and frightened witnesses behind. The next session might concern covering up that incident rather than confronting the original antagonist.

What a clan means
A clan is a vampire lineage. In the setting, a vampire’s sire—the Kindred who performs the Embrace—passes on a connection to a bloodline. Ancient progenitors are believed to persist through their descendants, and that inherited blood is associated with shared powers, weaknesses and recurring beliefs or behaviors.
Clan is therefore a character identity and a story hook, not a personality test. A Brujah is not required to be angry, a Ventrue is not automatically wise, and a Toreador does not have to be a painter. The clan gives the Storyteller and the player material to explore, while the individual character’s history and choices provide variation.

The official clan reference describes fourteen distinct clans in the modern nights. It discusses Caitiff, Thin-Blooded vampires and other minor bloodlines separately, so they should not be counted as additional entries in that fourteen-clan total.
| Clan | Beginner-friendly story hook from the official descriptions |
|---|---|
| Brujah | Rebels and idealists who may challenge authority or defend a cause. |
| Gangrel | Survival-oriented, beastlike shapeshifters tied to life outside polite society. |
| Malkavian | The clan is listed among the fourteen; its detailed rules and presentation depend on the edition used. |
| Nosferatu | Visibly cursed spies and information brokers who survive through secrecy and networks. |
| Toreador | Artists and seekers of beauty or sensation, with strong ties to culture and desire. |
| Tremere | The clan is listed among the fourteen; consult the relevant edition for its current abilities and conflicts. |
| Ventrue | Aristocratic leaders whose authority, responsibility and influence can drive a chronicle. |
| Banu Haqim | The clan is listed among the fourteen; its exact presentation and mechanics are edition-specific. |
| The Ministry | The clan is listed among the fourteen; its current details belong to the edition’s clan rules. |
| Hecata | The clan is listed among the fourteen; use the matching edition book for its bloodline traits. |
| Ravnos | The clan is listed among the fourteen; a chronicle may emphasize different themes depending on its edition and Storyteller. |
| Salubri | The clan is listed among the fourteen; rules and availability should be checked in the game line your group uses. |
| Tzimisce | The clan is listed among the fourteen; its story role and powers are defined by the applicable edition. |
| Lasombra | The clan is listed among the fourteen; consult the relevant edition for its present-day political and mechanical treatment. |
The table’s five descriptive entries are narrative identities, not mandatory behavior or a ranking. The remaining names are included to show the official fourteen-clan count without inventing edition-specific details that may differ between books.
Caitiff, Thin-Blooded vampires and minor bloodlines
Caitiff are vampires without a recognized clan identity. Thin-Blooded vampires are distant enough from older vampire blood that they occupy a distinct place in the setting. Both appear in the official clan reference alongside the fourteen clans, but neither should be treated as one of two extra clans. Minor bloodlines add further options in some editions and supplements.

How to choose a clan
- Start with the conflict you want to play: rebellion, leadership, investigation, survival, art or another theme.
- Read the clan’s current weakness as carefully as its powers. A limitation is often what creates the most memorable scenes.
- Ask the Storyteller how common the clan is in the chronicle and what relationships it already has in the setting.
- Do not choose from a supposed tier list. The official descriptions are story identities, not proof that one clan is universally stronger.
What a sect means
A sect is a political alignment, not a bloodline. If clan answers “Where does this vampire’s blood come from?”, sect answers “Which political group or orientation does this vampire support, tolerate or oppose?” Two vampires from the same clan can belong to different sects and become enemies. Vampires from different clans can cooperate because they share a sect or a local goal.

The official sixth-edition FAQ names five planned alignment choices: the Camarilla, the Anarchs, the Sabbat, Independents and The Unbound. That is a statement about the sixth edition’s planned framework, not a complete history of every edition or a promise that every chronicle uses all five.
| Sixth-edition FAQ alignment | What to decide as a player |
|---|---|
| Camarilla | Whether your character accepts the authority and obligations represented by this political alignment. |
| Anarchs | What your character wants to change, and how much order they are willing to retain while resisting established authority. |
| Sabbat | Whether this alignment’s ideology and conflicts fit the tone and boundaries of your group. |
| Independents | How your character operates outside the major organized blocs and what protection or influence they give up. |
| The Unbound | What motivates a character who does not accept the usual political structures. |
The FAQ provides the names, while a particular edition and chronicle establish their rules, relationships and local meaning. Ask your Storyteller which alignments are available before writing a backstory that assumes a specific political structure.
Clan and sect are different choices
| Question | Clan | Sect |
|---|---|---|
| What does it describe? | Bloodline and the Embrace that connects a character to it. | Political allegiance or orientation. |
| What does it influence? | Shared powers, weaknesses, traditions and story expectations. | Alliances, enemies, obligations and political conflicts. |
| Can characters share one but not the other? | Yes. Members of one clan can have different political loyalties. | Yes. A sect can include vampires from multiple clans. |
| Is it universal across editions? | The fourteen-clan modern-night count is stated by the official references, but availability and rules vary by edition. | The five-name list above is specifically from the sixth-edition FAQ. |
A character concept might therefore be “a Nosferatu information broker aligned with the Anarchs,” or “a Ventrue leader who operates independently.” The first part gives a bloodline hook; the second establishes political context.
Which edition should a beginner use?
Edition compatibility is the practical issue to resolve before buying a rulebook. The official sixth-edition FAQ, dated July 30, 2026, says sixth edition is still in alpha development, has no announced release date or price, will use different mechanics and is expected to carry over much of fifth-edition lore. Those plans can change during development.

“We are still in the alpha phase of development and want to ensure we can polish the material and implement the valuable feedback we’re receiving before we announce specifics like a release date or cost.”
That statement is from the official Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition FAQ. It means a sixth-edition book should not be treated as an available replacement for the current rules yet, and fifth-edition mechanics should not be assumed to transfer fully to sixth edition.
An official World of Darkness store search result surfaced a Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition Core Book, and the game page directs readers toward Vampire books. Because listings and stock change, verify the current product page before purchasing. The safest rule is simple: buy the core book for the edition your group is actually playing.
| Your situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| You are joining an existing chronicle | Ask the Storyteller for the edition, allowed books and character-creation rules before buying anything. |
| You are starting a fifth-edition game | Use the fifth-edition core rules and supplements approved by the group. |
| You want to follow sixth edition | Track official announcements; the July 30, 2026 FAQ lists alpha development with no release date or price. |
| You only want to understand the basic loop | Use the publisher’s free Basic Mechanics infographic or PDF before committing to a full purchase. |
How to start your first session
The publisher’s Basic Mechanics announcement, dated October 9, 2023, says its infographic is free to print and share, is designed for an entry-level tabletop session and is also available as a PDF. It points beginners toward Vampire dice, Health and Willpower. It is a useful orientation, but it does not replace the complete rulebook your table has selected.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the edition. Ask whether the group uses fifth edition or another rules set, and whether the chronicle permits all fourteen modern-night clans or selected options.
- Agree on tone and boundaries. Vampiric horror can involve violence, coercion, addiction, prejudice and loss of control. Decide which subjects are off-limits and which safety tools the group will use.
- Choose a character conflict. Write one sentence describing what your vampire wants and what they fear losing. “I need political status but refuse to abandon my mortal family” gives the Storyteller usable material.
- Select a clan. Pick the bloodline whose powers, weakness and social expectations create the kind of scenes you want to play.
- Select a sect or political position. Use the options allowed by the edition and chronicle. If the character is independent, define what they gain and what protection they lack.
- Build mortal connections. A former colleague, family member, professional contact or rival gives the character reasons to remain involved with human society, where the Masquerade matters most.
- Learn the table’s core procedures. Keep the group’s reference for dice, Health and Willpower nearby, and ask how hunger, supernatural powers and recovery are handled in that edition.
- Begin with a contained problem. A missing vessel, a suspicious witness or a disputed feeding ground lets everyone practice investigation, negotiation and consequence management without requiring encyclopedic lore.
Common beginner mistakes
Treating clan as a personality assignment
Clan traditions are pressures, not instructions. Give your character a reason to fit, resist or reinterpret those expectations. The contrast between a character and their clan can be more interesting than a perfect stereotype.

Choosing a sect before asking about the chronicle
A sect that is central in one campaign may be absent, hostile or redefined in another. Confirm what the Storyteller is using before building a backstory around a political faction.
Assuming the newest announcement is a playable release
The sixth-edition FAQ describes alpha development and provides no release date or price. Treat it as a development update, not as a rulebook you can use at the table today.
Focusing only on powers
Supernatural abilities are tools for creating choices, not a substitute for a character. Decide whom your vampire protects, what they will not do and which relationship can force them to compromise.

Rules, character creation and terminology can differ. Match the book to the group’s edition, and do not assume that fifth-edition mechanics will carry over unchanged to sixth edition.
What to remember
Vampire: The Masquerade is a collaborative tabletop horror story about surviving as a vampire while balancing hunger, power, politics and humanity. The Masquerade supplies the secrecy that makes exposure dangerous. Clan supplies inherited bloodline identity, powers and weaknesses. Sect supplies political alignment. Once those three ideas are clear, you can approach the setting without memorizing its entire history: find the edition your group uses, choose a conflict you want to explore and let the consequences of secrecy drive the chronicle.
