Valor Mortis is a single-player, first-person action Soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner. It reimagines Napoleonic-era Europe as a plague-ravaged supernatural world. You play William, a soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée who rises from a battlefield grave and discovers that the plague has changed both the continent and him. The game combines stamina-conscious melee combat, parries, evasive dashes, firearms, supernatural powers, finishers, and exploration built around secrets and shortcuts.
Official Steam and PlayStation listings scheduled the launch for October 13, 2026. At the October 13 listing check, Steam still showed the game as not yet available, while PlayStation listed a 17:00 UTC release time. Treat that as the scheduled launch information for that date, not proof that the game was already unlocked everywhere.

What kind of game is Valor Mortis?
Valor Mortis is designed as a first-person action Soulslike rather than a historical simulation. One More Level develops it, and Lyrical Games and One More Level are listed as publishers. The official Steam genre line calls it “a first-person action soulslike from the creators of Ghostrunner.” That description identifies the viewpoint and combat tradition; it does not make Valor Mortis a sequel to, or a story continuation of, the Ghostrunner games.

Its role-playing elements are tied to developing William’s combat options and supernatural abilities, while its action systems emphasize reading enemy attacks, managing stamina, choosing when to attack, and using movement to avoid being overwhelmed. The setting uses real Napoleonic imagery and 19th-century European architecture, but the events and monsters belong to a fictional supernatural reimagining.

The setting: a plague-ravaged Napoleonic Europe
William’s resurrection
William begins as a soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée. The official premise says he is brought back from a battlefield grave into a Europe that no longer resembles the one he knew. A mysterious plague is spreading across the continent, and its corrupting force pulses through William after his resurrection. The developer’s story material identifies him as William Dowsett and places Napoleon’s halted conquests in Eastern Europe at the point where the plague begins to reshape the conflict.
Napoleon, the Eternal Guard, and the conspiracy
War remains central to the world, but the enemy is not simply an opposing army. The plague creates abominations and corrupts Napoleon’s Eternal Guard, turning military power into a source of horror. William investigates why the disease exists, how it relates to his return from death, and what conspiracy is threatening humanity. Developer announcements also connect the mystery to Napoleon’s writing and resistance movements among occupied people.
Those details should be read as fictional story elements. Valor Mortis borrows names, uniforms, weapons, political tensions, and architecture from the Napoleonic period, then alters them with supernatural events. It is therefore better understood as alternate history with horror than as an educational depiction of the Napoleonic Wars.

How combat works
First-person, stamina-and-skill combat
The combat model is built around threat recognition and timing. Official descriptions specifically call out stamina-and-skill-based encounters, parrying, dashing out of danger, and visceral finishers. In practical terms, you are expected to watch attack animations, decide whether to commit to a strike or preserve stamina, and use a successful defensive action to create an opening. The first-person camera makes weapon reach and enemy positioning especially important: threats can come from outside the center of your view, so movement and awareness matter as much as raw damage.
Parries, dashes, and finishers
Parrying is the high-risk defensive option for players who can recognize an incoming blow. A successful timing window can interrupt an enemy’s pressure and set up a counterattack. Dashes provide a separate answer when a parry is unsafe or the attack covers too much space. They are described as a way to outmaneuver plague-ridden enemies, not as a replacement for learning attack patterns.

Visceral finishers give successful engagements a decisive conclusion. The official material presents them as part of the game’s brutal tone, so expect close-range takedowns rather than a clean, bloodless presentation. The systems are intended to make every encounter feel dangerous even when William has access to powerful equipment.
Melee weapons and firearms
William can fight with Napoleonic-era weapons including rapiers and flintlock pistols. The developer’s gameplay overview says players can dual-wield and level up swords, firearms, and magic. That combination gives the loadout system three distinct considerations:
- Melee weapons: Rapiers and other blades support close-range timing, spacing, and parry-oriented play.
- Firearms: Pistols provide ranged pressure in a period-appropriate form, letting you affect an encounter before closing distance or punish an enemy from outside melee range.
- Supernatural abilities: Magic adds options that ordinary Napoleonic equipment cannot provide and is part of William’s connection to the plague.
Dual-wielding is an explicit feature, but the available descriptions do not define every possible weapon combination or the exact ammunition and resource rules. Those details should be confirmed in the final game rather than inferred from promotional language.
Supernatural powers and progression
William’s resurrection is not only a story event; it is the source of his supernatural capabilities. The official descriptions say you can level up swords, firearms, and magic, indicating that progression is not limited to a single melee specialization. A player could therefore approach the game by emphasizing blade skill, building around ranged weapons, investing in supernatural abilities, or mixing all three.
The published information does not provide a complete skill tree, attribute list, maximum level, or respec rules. What is established is the broad structure: combat abilities and equipment improve over time, and the supernatural system is integrated into the same progression framework as weapons.
Exploration, levels, and progression through the world
Metroidvania-style structure
The publisher describes the level design as “Metroidvania-style.” In this context, that means exploration is expected to involve interconnected areas, hidden routes, locked or initially inaccessible paths, and revisiting places after gaining new capabilities. It should not be interpreted as a promise that Valor Mortis is a fully open-world game. The official material does not use that label.
Secrets, shortcuts, and side quests
The developer’s overview names secrets, shortcuts, and side quests as parts of the world. Secrets can reward players who inspect rooms and routes instead of following the most obvious objective marker. Shortcuts support progression through dangerous spaces by reducing the distance between major areas or encounters. Side quests add optional objectives beyond the central investigation into the plague and conspiracy.
Environmental secrets are also described as potentially useful for survival. That wording suggests exploration can provide practical advantages, not only collectibles or lore. The exact rewards, quest structure, and whether side quests have lasting consequences are not specified in the public descriptions.
Historically inspired architecture
Levels are built around a world of historically inspired architecture. Expect the visual language of 19th-century Europe—military spaces, occupied settlements, civic buildings, and war-damaged environments—combined with supernatural corruption. The architecture supplies navigational landmarks while reinforcing the contrast between recognizable history and the plague’s impossible creatures.

William faces plague-ridden abominations and members of Napoleon’s corrupted Eternal Guard. The Steam description emphasizes newfound mobility for outmaneuvering these enemies, so encounters are not presented as stationary duels. Movement, positioning, and the ability to escape a dangerous attack are core survival tools.
The tone is deliberately grim. Steam describes a brutal, war-torn landscape with violence throughout. PlayStation lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language. Players looking for a lighter historical adventure should expect a markedly darker experience, with body horror and battlefield imagery central to the presentation.
Platforms and release information
PlayStation 5
The official PlayStation listing identifies a PS5 version with offline play for one player. It also lists PS5 Pro enhancement, DualSense vibration, and adaptive trigger effects. Those features make the PS5 edition a console-focused presentation of the same single-player campaign; the listing does not describe a separate multiplayer mode.

Windows PC
Steam lists Windows 10 and Windows 11. An SSD is required for both minimum and recommended configurations. The published targets include upscaling, so the stated resolutions and frame rates assume that rendering feature is used.

Which release date should you use?
Lyrical Games announced a September 24, 2026 launch for PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and Steam on June 7, 2026, with a Steam demo. Later official Steam and PlayStation listings superseded that plan with October 13, 2026. Steam still displayed “not yet available” during the October 13 check and showed an expected unlock later that day; PlayStation specified 17:00 UTC. The later storefront information is the date to use, while the unlock status remains time- and region-sensitive.
Price and advertised story length
One More Level announced a launch price of $39.99, with regional prices of €39.99 and 149.99 zł. Prices can vary by territory, taxes, discounts, and later store changes, so check the relevant storefront before buying.
The developer also announced a planned 20-hour story. That is a developer estimate for the campaign, not an independently measured completion time. Optional exploration, side quests, secrets, difficulty, and a player’s combat approach can make an individual playthrough shorter or longer.

Demo and physical-disc status
The developer said the Steam demo would go offline on September 8, 2026. The earlier demo announcement therefore does not establish that a demo remained playable on October 13. The developer also announced that the build intended for physical discs was ready for printing. That supports checking for a physical PS5 edition, but it does not by itself confirm that a retail listing or a particular store listing is live.
Best Value
Who is Valor Mortis for?
Valor Mortis is a natural fit if you want a demanding action game viewed from the character’s eyes, enjoy learning enemy timing, and like combining melee weapons with ranged and supernatural tools. It also suits players attracted to alternate history, plague horror, and environments that reward detours.
When comparing it with another Soulslike, use concrete questions rather than assuming the games play alike:
- Do you prefer first-person combat or a third-person camera?
- How much do parries, stamina management, and evasive movement matter to you?
- Do you want one build centered on melee, or a system that combines blades, firearms, and magic?
- Would you rather explore interconnected areas with shortcuts and secrets than follow a mostly linear route?
- Does your PC meet the published SSD, memory, processor, and graphics requirements, or is the PS5 version a better fit?
Those are comparison criteria, not a claim that Valor Mortis is superior to any other game. Its distinctive proposition is the combination of a first-person Soulslike format, Napoleonic weaponry, supernatural progression, and plague horror.
What is confirmed—and what remains unspecified?
Confirmed public details include the single-player format, William’s role as a resurrected Grande Armée soldier, the supernatural Napoleonic setting, parries, dashes, finishers, firearms, dual-wielding, magic, Metroidvania-style exploration, side quests, secrets, shortcuts, PS5 support, Windows PC requirements, the October 13, 2026 scheduled release, the announced launch price, and the developer’s 20-hour story estimate.
The public descriptions do not establish a complete list of weapons, the exact skill tree, enemy count, difficulty modes, multiplayer or co-op features, cross-save, a final demo schedule, or the availability of a specific physical retailer edition. Those details should not be treated as confirmed until the developer or storefront provides them.
The Bottom Line
Valor Mortis is a single-player first-person Soulslike that turns Napoleonic Europe into a supernatural plague battlefield. Its defining systems are timing-based melee, firearms, magic, mobility, and exploration through secrets and shortcuts. The scheduled launch was October 13, 2026, on PS5 and Windows PC, with availability and store details subject to the latest regional listings.
