UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, is a payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that lets people send money directly between bank accounts through a supported app or other UPI channel. The app is the interface, the bank accounts hold the money, and the UPI PIN authorizes a transaction. NPCI says UPI payments are available 24/7, although that does not guarantee every individual payment will complete without delay.
What is UPI and how do instant bank-to-bank payments work?
UPI is a payment rail developed by NPCI over IMPS infrastructure. It carries instructions to transfer money between the payer’s and recipient’s bank accounts; the payment app helps the user set up and address that transfer. The app does not itself hold the balance in the linked bank account. NPCI’s UPI FAQ explains account linking and payment addresses, while its UPI product booklet describes the service and its payment types.

- Link an account. The user registers through a participating UPI app or provider and links a supported bank account. NPCI says the mobile number verified in the app must match the number registered with the bank for account discovery.
- Address the payment. Depending on the app and bank, the payer can use a UPI ID (also called a Virtual Payment Address or VPA), a QR code, account details, or another supported contact-based option.
- Check and authorize. The payer reviews the payee and amount, then enters the UPI PIN to authorize the bank transaction.
- Receive the result. UPI routes the instruction between the linked accounts, and the app and banks report the transaction status.
UPI supports person-to-person transfers and merchant payments. It also supports collect requests: for example, an online shopper can choose UPI, provide a payment address, receive a request in the app, and authorize it there. Available payment and addressing options vary by app and issuing bank, as NPCI notes in its FAQ.

Is UPI available 24/7?
Yes. NPCI says, “All payments are instant and 24/7, regardless of your bank’s working hours.” That describes the system’s stated availability, not a guarantee that every transaction will succeed or be confirmed immediately. If a payment appears incomplete or you do not receive confirmation, check its status in the app and contact your bank if the status remains unclear, as NPCI advises in its UPI FAQ.

Do I need to register a beneficiary?
No beneficiary registration is required for a UPI transfer, according to NPCI’s FAQ. You still need to select or enter the intended recipient using an option your app supports, and should verify the payee and amount before authorizing the payment.
Is my UPI PIN the same as my bank MPIN?
No. NPCI distinguishes the UPI PIN from a bank-issued MPIN. The UPI PIN is a 4–6 digit passcode set during UPI registration and used to authorize bank transactions. Keep it secret: NPCI says, “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone,” and says bank customer support will never ask for it. Because the PIN authorizes a payment, do not enter it to receive money.

UPI Tap & Pay
Tap & Pay is an optional NFC-based method, not a requirement for ordinary UPI scan-and-pay. In supported apps, an NFC-enabled phone reads a payee’s UPI ID/VPA from an NFC tag or smart QR. The phone or device must support NFC. See NPCI’s Tap & Pay overview.

NPCI’s UPI Global Acceptance applies at select international merchant locations, not everywhere UPI is accepted in India. A user must activate the feature through a supported app or account and confirm that the merchant accepts it. Before paying, review the amount in both local and Indian currency, the exchange rate, and any fees.
Eligible NRI accounts
NPCI also describes UPI access for eligible non-resident Indians using NRE or NRO accounts and supported international mobile numbers. Availability is subject to the participating bank’s terms; see NPCI’s UPI information for NRIs.
