What unigram.exe is
Unigram is described by its project as “Telegram for Windows.” The project distributes the client through the Microsoft Store and official direct-download channels. A normal Store installation places the executable inside a protected package directory such as C:Program FilesWindowsApps.... The exact folder name changes with the package version and architecture.

Store packages are registered with Windows and normally have a package identity, version and architecture associated with them. A direct download may instead be placed in a folder selected by the installer or by you. That difference is not automatically a safety problem, but you should be able to explain why the file is there and where the installer came from. If you cannot account for the file’s arrival, treat it as untrusted until scanning and signature checks are complete.
Is unigram.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer based on the filename. Treat a copy as probably legitimate only when the evidence agrees:
- It was installed from the Microsoft Store or obtained through the official Unigram project.
- Its path matches the protected Store package location or the folder chosen for an official download.
- The file’s Digital Signatures tab identifies the expected publisher and Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Microsoft Defender and Windows Security do not detect it.
Microsoft’s reputation and signature controls can classify unsigned or invalidly signed files as untrusted. Smart App Control can block malicious or potentially unwanted applications, while Windows Security’s potentially unwanted application (PUA) controls can block an app or download. A detection remains blocked until you deliberately select and start an action; do not override a warning simply to make the program launch.

Microsoft’s malware guidance recommends downloading software from a trusted vendor, keeping Defender security intelligence current, removing software you do not need and running a full or offline scan when unwanted software is suspected. A same-named file in an unexpected directory, with an unknown publisher or launched by a suspicious startup entry, should be treated as a possible impersonation until it is checked.
A 2026 Dr.Web threat entry lists Unigram.exe among Telegram-family processes that a trojan attempts to terminate. That means malware can target or interfere with the process; it does not mean the legitimate Unigram application is malware.
Quick comparison of two copies
| Check | More consistent with the official app | Needs investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Microsoft Store or official Unigram project | Attached to an unsolicited download, crack or unknown installer |
| Path | Protected C:Program FilesWindowsApps... package path, or a folder selected for an official package |
Temporary, user-writable or randomly named directory |
| Signature | Expected publisher and a valid Digital Signature | Unknown publisher, missing signature or an invalid signature |
| Security status | No Microsoft Defender or Windows Security detection | Defender, Smart App Control or PUA warning |
| Crash evidence | Package path and module correspond to the installed version | Different path, mismatched package or unexplained loaded modules |
How to check the path and signature
In Task Manager, select the Unigram process and use Open file location if Windows offers it. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and read the General and Digital Signatures tabs. A valid signature should identify a publisher that matches the package you intentionally installed, and Windows should report that the signature is valid. An absent signature is not proof of malware by itself, particularly for a file obtained through a documented direct-download channel, but it removes an important layer of confidence and warrants a scan and source check.

Compare the path shown in Properties with the path recorded in Event Viewer. If the two differ, you may be looking at separate copies or at a launcher that starts another executable. Also compare the file version and package version with the version listed in Microsoft Store or the Unigram installer. A version mismatch can explain why one copy crashes while another works, and it can reveal that an old download is being started by a shortcut.

Do not change permissions on WindowsApps merely to inspect a file. The directory is protected by design. Changing ownership or granting broad access can weaken Windows package security and can interfere with future Store updates. Use the application properties, Task Manager and Process Explorer for evidence instead.
Why unigram.exe crashes or fails to start
Windows 10 N lacks required media components
The official Unigram project states that Windows 10 N requires the Media Feature Pack. A documented Windows 10 N crash showed Unigram.exe running from a Store package and faulting in Microsoft.NET.Native.Framework.2.2SharedLibrary.dll. If your edition is Windows 10 N, install the Media Feature Pack offered for that edition, restart Windows and test Unigram again. The feature’s name and installation screen can vary by Windows build.
The N edition omits certain media technologies from the base operating system. Therefore, a normal-looking installation can still fail at launch or when a feature initializes if the required component is absent. Install the feature through Windows’ own Optional Features or Features-on-Demand workflow for your exact build, not from a third-party DLL site. Restart after installation so the framework and package registration are reloaded.
Architecture mismatch on ARM64
A separate issue report described an ARM64 Windows device receiving an x64 Store package and crashing after launch or sign-in. Check Settings > System > About and record the value shown for System type. Compare it with the architecture of the installed Store package before reinstalling. An architecture mismatch can produce a repeatable crash even when the executable is genuine.
Recommended Free Tools
Record whether the machine is x64, x86 or ARM64, and preserve that detail when contacting support. Do not infer architecture solely from the processor brand or from the fact that another Windows application runs. A package delivered by the Store can still be the wrong build for a particular device, and reinstalling the same package repeatedly will not correct a mismatch until the Store or project supplies a compatible build.

Damaged package or shared component
Repeated startup failures, a missing-DLL message or an exception in a framework module can indicate a damaged package or an incomplete Windows component update. The faulting module is more useful than the filename alone: it tells you whether the failure is inside Unigram, a Microsoft framework or another loaded component.
Note the exception code as well as the module name. Two crashes that both say “Unigram.exe has stopped working” can have different causes if one identifies a .NET Native framework DLL and the other identifies an application module. Package registration can also become inconsistent after an interrupted update, a rollback or a failed Store download. Repair and reinstall address those package problems without replacing shared Windows files manually.
Security blocking or impersonation
Windows may block an unsigned or invalidly signed file, a download classified as potentially unwanted or an executable with poor reputation. If the file is not in the expected package location, do not attempt to unblock it first. Verify the source, inspect the signature and scan it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtection History can show whether the action was a quarantine, a block or a user-selected response. Read the detection name and the exact path before deciding what to do. If the path points to a temporary download rather than the installed Store package, remove that copy and obtain Unigram again from an official channel. If the legitimate package is being blocked, keep the protection enabled and gather the detection details for support instead of creating a broad exclusion.
Complete manual troubleshooting procedure
Follow these steps in order. Stop at the first point that identifies an unsafe file; do not continue repairing or launching a copy that fails the provenance and security checks.
- Capture the crash details. Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.mscand press Enter. Open Windows Logs > Application, find the event at the time of the failure and record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, package path, Windows version/build and CPU architecture. Windows Error Reporting is designed to record application faults and can supply this troubleshooting information. - Confirm which file is running. In Task Manager, right-click the Unigram process and choose Open file location when that option is available. In the file’s Properties, note the full path, file version and the Digital Signatures tab. A Store copy normally resides under the protected WindowsApps directory; a different location requires an explanation from the installer you used.
- Inspect loaded modules when the cause is unclear. Microsoft’s Process Explorer can show the active process, its loaded DLLs and handles. Use it to see whether the crashing process is loading a module from an unexpected directory. Record the module name rather than deleting it blindly; a Windows or .NET component may be shared by many applications.
- Update Defender and scan before repairing. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, install the latest security intelligence updates and run a Full scan. If the file remains strongly suspicious, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan, which restarts the PC and checks outside the normal Windows session. Do not add an exclusion merely because the scan prevents Unigram from starting.
- Review Smart App Control and PUA actions. In Windows Security, inspect the protection history and App & browser control pages. Read the detection name and file path. If Windows identifies an unsigned, invalidly signed or potentially unwanted file, quarantine or remove that copy and obtain Unigram again from an official channel instead of overriding the warning.
- Check the Windows edition and architecture. Open Settings > System > About. Record whether the edition is Windows 10 N and whether the system is x64, x86 or ARM64. This information determines whether the Media Feature Pack is required and helps explain a package-architecture mismatch.
- Install pending Windows and Store updates. Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates and restart. Then open Microsoft Store, select Library and choose Get updates (the label can vary by Store version). Reboot once more before testing the app.
- Add the Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 N. If your edition is Windows 10 N, use Windows’ Optional Features or Features-on-Demand screen to locate Media Feature Pack, install the package intended for your Windows build and restart. Do not substitute a random media DLL downloaded from a third-party site.
- Try the built-in app repair. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Unigram > Advanced options. Select Repair if it is available, then launch Unigram. Repair attempts to correct the package without removing its installed data. If the crash continues, return to the same page and use Reset; Reset can remove local app data and settings.
- Uninstall and reinstall from an official source. Remove the damaged or untrusted package from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows and reinstall Unigram from the Microsoft Store or the official Unigram project channel. This replaces package files and registration without introducing third-party replacement DLLs. Check the path and signature again after installation.
- Check startup entries if the process launches unexpectedly. In Task Manager’s Startup apps page and in Settings > Apps > Startup, look for an entry pointing to an unfamiliar
unigram.exelocation. Disable the entry while you investigate, then scan the file. The legitimate client should not require you to approve a random startup command to complete installation. - Escalate with precise information. If the official package still crashes, report the exact error text, package version, Windows build and edition, CPU architecture, Store or direct-package origin, faulting module and exception code. Include whether Repair, Reset, the Media Feature Pack and a clean reinstall changed the behavior. These details distinguish a reproducible application defect from a damaged Windows component or an impersonating file.
Match the symptom to the likely next action
| Symptom | What it suggests | Manual response |
|---|---|---|
| Crash immediately after installing on Windows 10 N | Missing Media Feature Pack or a framework fault such as SharedLibrary.dll |
Confirm the N edition, install the Media Feature Pack, restart, update Windows and repair or reinstall the Store package. |
| Crash on an ARM64 device or immediately after sign-in | Possible x64 package delivered to an ARM64 system | Record System type, verify package architecture and reinstall the correct official package. |
| “Missing DLL” or invalid-package message | Damaged package, missing Windows component or wrong architecture | Record the module and exception in Event Viewer, update Windows, then use Repair or reinstall. Never download a replacement DLL from a random site. |
| Windows blocks the file or shows an unknown publisher | Unsigned/invalid signature, reputation warning, PUA detection or impersonation | Stop launching it, inspect path and signature, review protection history and run a full or offline Defender scan. Remove the copy if it is not from an official channel. |
| Unigram appears in startup from a temporary folder | Suspicious persistence or a nonstandard installation | Disable the startup entry, preserve the path and event details, scan the file and reinstall only from an official source. |
What the key diagnostic fields tell you
Faulting application path answers which copy crashed. If it points into WindowsApps, it is associated with a Store package; if it points to Downloads, Temp or an unfamiliar profile folder, investigate provenance first. Faulting module path identifies the component that raised the exception. A Microsoft.NET Native framework path points toward a shared component or edition requirement, while an unexpected third-party path raises a security question.

Exception code helps separate a repeatable software fault from a general “not responding” report. Preserve it exactly, including leading zeroes. Package version and architecture let support compare your installation with a known issue. Windows build and edition matter because Windows 10 N has different component requirements and an ARM64 device can receive a package different from an x64 system. Recording all five fields prevents guesswork and avoids unnecessary reinstalls.
What not to do
- Do not assume every
unigram.exeis safe because the name matches Unigram. - Do not download a replacement
.dllfrom an unknown “DLL fixer” website. - Do not disable Defender, Smart App Control or PUA protection just to bypass a warning.
- Do not delete a framework DLL identified in Event Viewer before determining whether Windows or another application uses it.
- Do not report a crash without the faulting module, exception code, package path and system architecture; those fields often determine the correct fix.
- Do not copy an executable from another computer to “replace” the failing file. Package registration, dependencies, signatures and architecture must match the local installation.
- Do not repeatedly reset the app before preserving logs. Reset can remove local app data and may make it harder to reproduce or describe the original failure.
When a reinstall is the right answer
Reinstalling is appropriate when the package path is official but files are damaged, Repair and Reset fail, or Store registration remains broken after Windows and Store updates. It is also the safest response when a downloaded copy has an unknown publisher or an unexpected path: quarantine or remove that copy, scan the system, and obtain a clean package from the Microsoft Store or official Unigram project.
A reinstall is not a universal cure. If Event Viewer continues to identify the same framework module, the same architecture mismatch or a Windows component outside Unigram, address that underlying condition instead of repeatedly replacing the application.
Bottom line
Legitimate unigram.exe is the Unigram Telegram client, but the filename is not proof of identity or safety. Verify origin, path, signature and Defender status first. For crashes, capture Event Viewer evidence, check Windows edition and CPU architecture, install the Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 N, update Windows and Store components, then use Repair, Reset or an official reinstall. Avoid third-party DLL downloads and treat an unknown-path or unknown-publisher copy as suspicious.
As an optional shortcut after these checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, check selected vulnerabilities and log app crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial lasts by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. Frequently Asked Questions
What is unigram.exe?
It is normally the executable for Unigram, an open-source Telegram client for Windows. Confirm that the copy came from the Microsoft Store or the official Unigram project and verify its path and signature.
Is unigram.exe a virus?
The filename alone cannot answer that. A legitimate copy should have an expected source, a consistent package path, a valid publisher signature and no Microsoft Defender detection. An unknown-path or unknown-publisher copy may be an impersonation.
Best Value
Why does unigram.exe keep crashing?
Common documented possibilities include a missing Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 N, an ARM64 system receiving an x64 package, damaged package files and failures in a shared framework. Event Viewer’s faulting module and exception code identify which path to investigate.
How do I fix “unigram.exe has stopped working”?
Capture the Application event first, then update Windows and Microsoft Store apps, check your edition and architecture, install the Media Feature Pack if you use Windows 10 N, and try Repair or Reset. Reinstall only from an official channel if those steps fail.
Why is Windows blocking unigram.exe?
Smart App Control, reputation checks or PUA protection may block an unsigned, invalidly signed or suspicious file. Read Protection History, inspect the path and signature, scan the file and remove it if it did not come from an official source. Do not disable protection just to launch it.
Do I need the Media Feature Pack for Unigram on Windows N?
The Unigram project states that Windows 10 N requires the Media Feature Pack. Install the feature intended for your exact Windows build through Optional Features or Features-on-Demand, restart, and then test or repair the app.
Where should a legitimate Store copy of unigram.exe be located?
A Store installation commonly runs from a protected package directory under C:Program FilesWindowsApps. Package names and version folders vary. A file in Temp, Downloads or another user-writable directory needs a clear explanation and a security check.
Should I download a replacement DLL to fix Unigram?
No. Random DLL sites can supply modified or incompatible files. Record the missing or faulting module, update Windows, install required components such as the Media Feature Pack, and use the app’s Repair or official reinstall options.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Include the exact error text, package version, Windows build and edition, CPU architecture, Store or direct-package origin, full package path, faulting module and exception code. State whether Repair, Reset, updates or a clean reinstall changed the result.
Can malware target the Unigram process even if my copy is legitimate?
Yes. A threat entry lists Unigram.exe among Telegram-family processes a trojan may attempt to terminate. That describes interference with the process, not proof that the genuine Unigram client is malicious. Verify the file and scan the system.
The Bottom Line
Legitimate unigram.exe is usually Unigram for Windows, but safety depends on provenance, path, signature and scan results. Capture crash evidence, check Windows edition and architecture, install the Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 N, update components, and repair or reinstall only from an official source.
