Unlicensed Band Radio (UBR) delivers broadband by carrying network traffic over a fixed wireless link using radio spectrum that does not require an individual spectrum assignment under the applicable local rules. A point-to-point link bridges two sites; a point-to-multipoint link connects a hub to several remote sites. UBR can provide backhaul or a last-mile connection where a wired route is difficult to build, but it still needs an upstream network and sufficient capacity.
What UBR means
In fixed-network deployments, UBR stands for Unlicensed Band Radio. It describes a category of radio equipment and links that operate in license-exempt spectrum under local regulations—not one universal wireless standard or a single type of device.

Products vary in frequency band, channel width, modulation, antennas, capacity, interfaces, and regulatory approvals. HFCL’s product pages, for example, describe outdoor 5 GHz radios with features including 2×2 MIMO, modulation options, Ethernet interfaces, PoE, and antenna variants. Its ion4le/ion4lx model family lists 802.11ac operation and a 5.1–5.9 GHz range; that specification is for those products, not a worldwide allocation or permission to use every frequency in every country. How a UBR link carries broadband
- Connect the hub to the upstream network. An operator brings an internet or private network connection to a tower, building, or other hub site and connects it to the hub radio.
- Transmit traffic over a radio channel. The hub radio encodes and sends network data to remote radios. In a point-to-point (PtP) design, the link joins two endpoints. In a point-to-multipoint (PtMP) design, one hub serves multiple remote sites.
- Hand traffic off at the remote site. A remote radio passes the traffic to local equipment such as an Ethernet switch, Wi-Fi access point, or customer network.
The radio hop replaces part of a wired network path; it does not create an internet connection on its own. The upstream connection and its available capacity remain essential. UBR may be used for network backhaul between sites or as a segment of broadband distribution to homes, businesses, or community facilities.

PtP and PtMP: which topology does what?
| Topology | Connection | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| Point-to-point (PtP) | One radio endpoint connects to one other endpoint. | A dedicated bridge between two network sites, such as a hub and a remote building. |
| Point-to-multipoint (PtMP) | One central hub radio connects to multiple remote radios. | Distributing connectivity from a central site to several locations. |
Both designs require suitable site placement and radio planning. In PtMP, the hub’s available capacity is shared among the served links, so the number of remotes and their traffic demands matter when estimating what each location can receive.
What speed and range should you expect?
There is no single UBR speed or maximum range. Those depend on the particular radios and channel, antenna characteristics and placement, transmit-power limits, line of sight, Fresnel-zone clearance, interference, configuration, and the network load being carried.

Vendor specifications illustrate product capability, not guaranteed subscriber performance. HFCL lists up to 700 Mbps aggregate throughput for its ion4le/ion4lx variants and a 2 Gbps aggregate-throughput tier on its PtP UBR portfolio page. These are manufacturer-listed product figures, not a general UBR benchmark or an assurance that a customer will receive that rate. Realized link and service performance depend on deployment conditions, configuration, shared capacity, and upstream bandwidth. HFCL’s UBR product portfolio

What “unlicensed” does—and does not—mean
“Unlicensed” generally means that a user does not need an individually assigned spectrum license for the relevant band under the applicable local rules. It does not mean a radio can be operated without restrictions: permitted frequencies, channel use, power limits, equipment approval, and coordination requirements vary by jurisdiction.
Nor does unlicensed mean exclusive or immune to interference. A 2015 report by India’s Committee on National Optical Fibre Network described UBR as not protected from interference. Because unlicensed spectrum may be shared, other transmissions can affect a link. The report is historical and India-specific; it should not be treated as a guide to current rules elsewhere. - 2-WAY RADIOS: The walkie-talkies are equipped with 36 FRS (Family Radio Service) channels, and communication options. Additionally, they offer a convenient channel scan feature that allows users to easily check for activity on different channels. For power, these walkie-talkies offer dual options. They can be powered by the included rechargeable battery pack, providing a reliable and reusable energy source. Users have the option to use 3 "AAA" batteries (not included) for flexibility.
- UP TO 30-MILE RANGE: Unlock the power of long-range communication capabilities in, unobstructed environments with minimal or no obstacles. With enhanced signal reach, these devices enable seamless and reliable connections over greater distances. Enjoy clear communication across open spaces, whether exploring vast outdoor landscapes, participating in outdoor events, or engaging in professional activities. Benefit from extended-range capabilities to stay connected, and coordinate efficiently.
- 121 CTCSS PRIVACY CODES: With privacy codes, the Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System provides a wide selection of up to 2,662 channel options. These codes offer the ability to block out other conversations, ensuring clear and interference-free communication. The walkie-talkies feature a silent operation mode, allowing users to turn off all tones and operate discreetly without any audible signals. With this functionality, your walkie-talkies automatically scan through 10 weather channels, identifying and locking onto the strongest weather channel available. This ensures that you receive critical updates and alerts regarding severe weather conditions. When a potential risk of severe weather is detected, the NOAA Weather Alert triggers an audible alarm, notifying you to take necessary precautions.
- INCLUDED IN THE BOX: Radios (x2), Belt clips (x2), rechargeable battery packs (x2), Desktop charger, AC Adapter, Owner's Manual
When UBR may be a practical choice
UBR can be useful where a new fiber route is difficult, expensive, or slow to build, or where network operators need a wireless backhaul or distribution segment. It can avoid an individual spectrum assignment in some bands and locations, but whether it is quicker or less costly than alternatives depends on the route, equipment, installation, regulatory requirements, and ongoing maintenance.

A 2015 Indian public-network planning report considered 5.8 GHz UBR for connecting Gram Panchayats. It reported that 14% of sampled Gram Panchayats required more than 5 km of incremental fiber under the existing architecture and cited an estimated fiber-laying cost of Rs 4 lakhs per kilometre, excluding electronics. The report also used a 300 Mbps threshold over 10 years as a planning point below which radio connectivity could be considered for certain links. These were historical planning figures for that Indian context, not current costs or general performance standards for UBR. Committee on National Optical Fibre Network report, March 31, 2015
What equipment is involved?
A UBR deployment typically uses outdoor radio units at the link endpoints, appropriate antennas, mounting hardware, power (often delivered over Ethernet where supported), and network equipment for the upstream and local handoffs. The exact combination depends on the radio model and topology. HFCL’s ion4le/ion4lx and ion8xle/ion8xlx are examples of specialist PtP or UBR equipment; they are not ordinary consumer Wi-Fi routers. Selecting a radio therefore requires checking compatible antennas, interfaces, power, regulatory approval, and the intended link design rather than choosing by product name alone. HFCL UBR product information
Bottom line
UBR is a way to carry network traffic between fixed sites over license-exempt radio spectrum. It can provide a useful backhaul or broadband-distribution segment when a wired route is impractical, but the achievable service depends on upstream capacity, link design, local spectrum rules, and radio conditions. Treat model throughput as a specification to assess—not as a promise of subscriber speed.
