tumessages.exe is not a core Windows process. The name is most strongly associated with the legacy AVG PC TuneUp 2014 and TuneUp Utilities “TuneUp Messages” component. A copy in C:Program Filesavgavg pc tuneuptumessages.exe, signed by the expected AVG publisher and present with the parent TuneUp program, is more consistent with the historical legitimate file. The same filename in a temporary, Downloads, user-profile or unrelated system folder—or a file with no valid signature—should be treated as untrusted until Microsoft Defender has checked it.
The safest response is to verify the complete path and digital signature, check whether TuneUp is installed, uninstall an obsolete parent application through Windows, and run updated Defender scans. Do not download a replacement executable from a “missing DLL” website, and never call a phone number shown in a pop-up claiming to be a Microsoft error.

What tumessages.exe is
Older AVG PC TuneUp and TuneUp Utilities releases included a small component called TuneUp Messages. File-reputation records associate tumessages.exe with AVG PC TuneUp 2014, commonly under:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →C:Program Filesavgavg pc tuneuptumessages.exe
Those records identify AVG Netherlands B.V. as the publisher and describe a digital signature. Older TuneUp Utilities records also show TUMessages.exe in a RunOnce entry named “RegistryDefrag Success Message.” That entry was intended to display a message after a registry-defragmentation operation and then run once at the next sign-in.

This history explains why the file can appear in startup records on an old computer, or why Windows may report that it cannot find the file after TuneUp has been partly removed. It does not prove that every file named tumessages.exe is genuine. Malware can use a familiar filename, and an unrelated program or a downloaded file can be given the same name.
Is tumessages.exe a Windows system file?
No evidence identifies it as a component of the Windows operating system. It is associated with third-party TuneUp software, while Windows Security and Microsoft Defender Antivirus are the built-in Windows protection components. Removing an obsolete TuneUp component is therefore different from removing a required Windows executable, but you should still verify the specific copy before deleting anything.
Is tumessages.exe safe?
Safety depends on the individual file, not just its spelling. Use all of the checks below together:

| Location | The historical AVG PC TuneUp directory under C:Program Filesavgavg pc tuneup |
A temporary folder, Downloads, a user-profile subfolder, a random system directory or another unrelated product folder |
| Publisher and signature | Properties shows a valid signature from the expected AVG/TuneUp publisher | No Digital Signatures tab, an invalid signature, an unknown signer or a signer that does not match the installed product |
| Parent application | AVG PC TuneUp or TuneUp Utilities is actually installed and was obtained intentionally | No parent application exists, or the program appeared without your knowledge |
| Security result | Current Defender scans do not flag the file and its behavior matches a simple notification component | Defender detects it, quarantines it or reports suspicious persistence or behavior |
| Startup behavior | A one-time TuneUp notification after a known operation | Repeated relaunches, unrelated tasks, network activity or high resource use without a clear TuneUp explanation |
Microsoft notes that unknown software presents greater risk for typical users until its reputation is established. A valid signature is useful evidence of who signed a file, but it is not a guarantee that the program is wanted or that an old product should remain installed. Conversely, a filename that resembles a historical TuneUp component must not be used to override a current Defender detection.
How to verify a tumessages.exe copy safely
1. Record the complete path
- If a warning names the file, note the full path shown in the alert. Do not click “Allow” or “Restore” merely because the filename looks familiar.
- If the process is running, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Details tab, locate
tumessages.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the folder before closing it. - If Windows reports a startup error instead of showing a running process, continue with the installed-program and startup checks below; a missing file has no location to open.
The path is one of the strongest clues. The historical location under the AVG PC TuneUp folder is materially different from a copy in %Temp%, a browser-download directory or an arbitrary folder created recently.
2. Check the file properties and signature
- In File Explorer, right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for the file description, size and modification date. These details can support an investigation but do not establish authenticity by themselves.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signer and choose Details.
- Windows should report that the digital signature is valid. Confirm that the signer fits the AVG/TuneUp installation you recognize. An absent, invalid or unrelated signature is a reason to stop treating the file as trusted.
Do not edit or rename the executable while investigating. Preserve the path and signature information so you can compare it with the installed program and Defender’s result.

3. Check whether the parent program is installed
On Windows 10 or 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features in some Windows 10 builds) and search for AVG PC TuneUp or TuneUp Utilities. On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If you intentionally installed the old utility and still need it, verify its files and scan the system before allowing the process to run. If it is obsolete, unwanted or no longer listed even though its startup entry remains, uninstalling the parent application is safer than deleting a lone executable. Microsoft recommends uninstalling software you do not need through normal Windows controls.
4. Update Defender and run a full scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Protection updates > Check for updates (the wording can vary slightly by Windows build).
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan and start it.
- Leave a detection in quarantine while you investigate. Do not restore
tumessages.exesolely because the filename matches an old TuneUp record.
Defender uses reputation and observed behavior to distinguish unknown software, malware and potentially unwanted applications. The filename alone cannot overturn a current detection.

5. Use Defender Offline when the file persists
If the suspicious file returns after a normal scan, cannot be removed while Windows is running, or continues to create unexplained startup behavior, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). Save open work first. Windows will restart and scan before the usual desktop loads, which can help when a persistent process interferes with a normal scan. Review the result in Windows Security after the computer restarts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fixing “tumessages.exe not found” at startup
A missing-file message commonly appears after an old TuneUp installation has been removed incompletely. The documented TuneUp RunOnce entry named “RegistryDefrag Success Message” makes an orphaned startup reference plausible, but that explanation is an inference from the older behavior rather than a current Microsoft repair diagnosis.
Remove the obsolete application first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features).
- Uninstall AVG PC TuneUp or TuneUp Utilities if you no longer want it.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
Do not start by deleting random registry values or downloading a replacement executable. Removing the parent program through its uninstaller can clean associated startup references and is easier to reverse than manual registry editing.
Best Value
Review startup entries after uninstalling
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select Startup apps. Disable an entry clearly associated with the uninstalled TuneUp product, then restart to test.
- If the pop-up remains, create a restore point before editing the registry. Press Win+R, type
regedit, and approve the User Account Control prompt. - In Registry Editor, use Edit > Find to search for
tumessages.exe. Check each result and note whether it is a RunOnce or other startup value belonging to the removed TuneUp program. - Export the relevant key before changing it: right-click the key, choose Export, and save the
.regbackup somewhere you can find. - Delete only the stale value that explicitly points to the missing TuneUp executable. Do not remove an entire key, and do not alter values you cannot identify.
- Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.
If the reference belongs to another product, points to an unexpected path or returns after removal, stop editing and complete a Defender Offline scan. A recurring entry can indicate an unwanted program rather than a harmless leftover.
Fixing repeated crashes or high resource use
- Confirm the path and signature before changing anything. A crash in the historical TuneUp folder is a different case from a crash in a temporary directory.
- Use Task Manager’s Processes and Details tabs to observe whether CPU, memory or disk use rises only briefly during a notification or remains high.
- Run an updated Defender full scan. Use Defender Offline if the process returns or normal scanning cannot complete.
- If AVG PC TuneUp or TuneUp Utilities is no longer needed, uninstall it through Windows and restart.
- Check Task Manager’s Startup apps list after the restart. Disable only the obsolete TuneUp entry; do not disable unrelated Windows security components.
- Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for an entry at the crash time. The faulting application path can reveal whether the event actually involves
tumessages.exeor a different program.
Do not obtain a replacement EXE or DLL from an unofficial “missing file” site. Such downloads can be modified, unsigned or bundled with unwanted software, and they do not repair the underlying installation or persistence problem.
What to do if Defender detects tumessages.exe
- Allow Windows Security to quarantine the detection and record the detection name and file path.
- Run a full scan with current security intelligence.
- If the alert returns, run Microsoft Defender Offline.
- Review installed applications and startup entries for the parent TuneUp program or another application that may be recreating the file.
- Keep the item quarantined unless you have independently verified the exact path, signature and parent installation and Defender provides a clear reason that the detection was a false positive.
A historical association with AVG PC TuneUp is not an exemption from present-day security controls. An unsigned copy, an unexpected location or behavior that does not resemble a simple TuneUp message component should be handled as untrusted.

Recognizing fake tumessages.exe support warnings
A browser page or phone call may display a frightening “Windows error” and claim that tumessages.exe requires immediate support. Microsoft states that “Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.” Do not call a number shown in a browser pop-up, give a stranger remote access, or install remote-control software because of an unsolicited warning.
Close the browser tab or window, disconnect from the session if someone already connected remotely, uninstall any remote-control program you did not intentionally install, update Defender and run a full scan. Microsoft recommends obtaining software from official vendor websites or the Microsoft Store and scanning after a suspected support scam. A genuine Windows Security alert appears in Windows Security, not as a demand to telephone an unknown number.
When can you delete tumessages.exe?
Do not delete the file merely because it is old or because the name is unfamiliar. First verify the path, signature, parent application and Defender result.
Quick Recap
- If TuneUp is installed and trusted: leave the component alone unless the product itself is malfunctioning; consider removing the entire obsolete product if you no longer need it.
- If TuneUp was uninstalled and the file remains: run scans, confirm that no startup entry or service still requires it, then remove leftovers only after a backup or restore point.
- If the file is unsigned, misplaced or detected: quarantine or remove it through Windows Security and investigate what created it. Do not restore it because the filename resembles a legitimate historical file.
- If Windows reports it is missing: remove the stale parent-program entry rather than downloading a replacement executable.
Decision checklist
- Have you recorded the complete path from Task Manager or the alert?
- Does the file sit in the historical AVG PC TuneUp directory rather than a temporary or download folder?
- Does Properties report a valid signature from the expected publisher?
- Is AVG PC TuneUp or TuneUp Utilities actually installed?
- Has Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence been updated?
- Has a full scan completed, and was Defender Offline used if the behavior persisted?
- Did you uninstall an obsolete parent application before editing startup references?
- Have you avoided unofficial replacement EXE/DLL downloads and phone numbers in pop-ups?
