tracerpt.exe is a legitimate Microsoft Windows command-line utility for reading Event Trace Logs (ETL), Performance Monitor logs, and real-time Event Trace sessions. A normal copy is usually in C:WindowsSystem32tracerpt.exe and is digitally signed by Microsoft. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine: a file with the same name running from Downloads, Temp, a user profile, or another unexpected folder needs separate investigation.
Most tracerpt.exe problems fall into two groups: the trace data cannot be read, or the Windows executable and supporting system files are missing or damaged. You can diagnose the first group with tracerpt’s input, schema, symbol, and permission options. Repair the second group with DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC), and use Startup Repair if corruption prevents Windows from starting normally.

What tracerpt.exe does
Windows uses Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) to record detailed activity from operating-system components, drivers, applications, and other providers. The resulting files are commonly Event Trace Log files with an .etl extension. ETL files are optimized for collection rather than casual reading, so their contents are usually not understandable in a text editor.

tracerpt.exe is Microsoft’s Event Trace Report utility. It parses ETL files, log files created by Performance Monitor, and active real-time Event Trace providers. It can then write a readable dump, a report, a summary, or a schema file. Microsoft documents the command for Windows 10, Windows 11, and supported Windows Server releases.

That makes tracerpt a diagnostic and conversion tool, not a general-purpose cleaner, optimizer, antivirus, or repair program. Seeing it run during a support session, performance investigation, or trace-conversion task is normal. A command prompt window may appear briefly, or the process may run without a visible window when another diagnostic program starts it.
What it can read and produce
- Inputs: one or more ETL files, Performance Monitor log files, or one or more real-time trace sessions.
- Dump formats: CSV, EVTX, or XML, selected with
-of. - Report formats: XML or HTML, selected with
-f. - Other outputs: a text output file with
-o, a report file with-report, a summary with-summary, and a Microsoft-specific schema with-df.
The utility does not make an ETL file valid when the trace was never completed, is still locked, or was generated with provider information that is not available during parsing. In those cases, the error is usually in the trace workflow or its metadata rather than in tracerpt itself.
Is tracerpt.exe safe?
The genuine Windows copy is safe when it is the Microsoft-signed executable in the expected Windows system directory and is being used for trace conversion. Treat authenticity as a combination of path, signature, and behavior rather than as a filename match.

- Open Task Manager and locate the process, or use the process details supplied by the diagnostic program that launched it.
- Right-click the process and choose Open file location when that option is available.
- Confirm that the executable is normally located at
C:WindowsSystem32tracerpt.exe. The Windows directory can differ if the operating system was installed on a different drive, so check the actual%windir%value rather than assuming the drive letter.
A copy in a user profile, Downloads, Temp, a removable drive, or another writable location is not automatically malware, but it is not the normal system copy. Do not replace or delete it merely because the name matches. Record its full path and investigate that copy separately.
Verify Microsoft’s digital signature
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft. If the tab is absent, the signature is invalid, or the signer is not Microsoft, treat the file as untrusted until it has been independently scanned.
Run Windows Security on an unexpected copy. A legitimate tracerpt process should be associated with ETL or trace-report work, not unexplained persistence, unsolicited network activity, or a command line unrelated to tracing. If a suspicious copy is detected, quarantine or investigate that copy without touching the signed system file.
Can you delete tracerpt.exe?
Do not delete the copy in the Windows system directory. Windows components and diagnostic tools may depend on it, and deleting a protected executable can create a second problem while leaving the original cause unresolved. If the file is missing or damaged, repair Windows components instead of downloading a replacement executable from an unverified site.

How tracerpt.exe is used
Microsoft documents this general syntax:
tracerpt <[-l] <value [value [...]]>|-rt <session_name [session_name [...]]>> [options]The input can be a list of ETL files supplied with -l, or active sessions supplied with -rt. Put paths containing spaces in quotation marks. Write output to a directory where your account has permission and where the destination file is not already locked.

Convert an ETL file to XML
Open Command Prompt, change to a folder where you can write, and run:
tracerpt logfile.etl -o logdump.xml -of XMLThe command reads logfile.etl and writes an XML dump to logdump.xml. If the command says the file cannot be found, use the ETL’s full path and check the spelling, extension, and drive. If it reports access denied, choose an input and output directory that your account can read and write.
Collect a trace, stop it, then convert it
A common ETW workflow is to use logman.exe to start a trace, stop the session cleanly, and then pass the resulting ETL to tracerpt. Microsoft describes the conversion stage as follows:
tracerpt mytrace.etl -o mytrace.xmlThe exact logman start and stop commands depend on the provider and session configuration. The important sequence is to stop the session before conversion so that the ETL has been finalized and is no longer being written. If a provider is intentionally live, use the -rt form and the session name instead of treating a changing file as complete.
Why tracerpt.exe errors occur
Windows cannot find tracerpt.exe
A “file not found” or “tracerpt.exe is missing” message can mean that the executable is genuinely absent, that the command is being run in an environment with an incorrect path, or that a script references a different Windows installation. Check %windir%System32tracerpt.exe first. If it exists, invoke the command from an elevated or correctly configured Windows environment and use the full path when necessary.

Access is denied
Tracerpt needs to read the ETL and create its output. Access can fail when the input is in a protected directory, the destination is not writable, the file is owned by another account, or another program has the file open. Copy the ETL to a working folder you control, choose a new output filename, and retry. Elevation may be required for protected trace files, but running as administrator does not fix a locked or malformed ETL.
The ETL is invalid, empty, or unreadable
An ETL can be unusable if tracing was interrupted, the producer crashed, the file is zero bytes, the file is still being written, or the provider generated data that the parser cannot interpret. Check the file size and timestamp, confirm that the producing session was stopped cleanly, and retry after copying the file to a local working directory. Preserve the original file so that a second attempt does not overwrite evidence.
Schema, TMF, or symbol warnings appear
Some providers require metadata to turn event payloads into meaningful names and messages. Supply the appropriate schema with -df, TMF definitions with -tmf and -tp, or symbol information with -i and -pdb. If you only need a best-effort dump, try -lr, but treat missing fields or undecoded messages as a limitation of that output rather than proof that the trace is complete.
Tracerpt crashes or Windows reports system-file corruption
A repeatable crash with different, known-good ETL files can point to damaged Windows components, although the ETL, metadata, permissions, or a third-party caller can also be responsible. Repair protected system files before attempting any manual replacement. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses, and SFC then checks protected files such as the system copy of tracerpt.
Manual fixes, in the order to try them
1. Capture the exact error and context
- Copy the complete error text, including any error code or filename.
- Note whether the failure occurs with one ETL or every ETL.
- Record the input path, output path, account used, and whether the trace is a file or a real-time session.
- Check whether the failure began after an interrupted trace, a Windows update, a driver change, or a storage problem.
This distinction prevents a valid parser from being “repaired” when the real issue is a bad input file or an unwritable destination.
2. Check the executable before changing Windows
Confirm the full path and Microsoft signature using the verification steps above. If the expected system file exists and is signed, leave it in place. If a same-named executable in another directory is involved, scan or quarantine that copy separately and repeat the test with the signed system executable.

3. Use a clean, writable working folder
- Create a folder such as
C:TraceWorkin a location your account can access. - Copy the ETL there without changing the original.
- Open Command Prompt and change to that folder, or provide full paths in the command.
- Use a new output name, for example
logdump.xml, so a locked report does not cause an overwrite error.
If conversion works from the working folder, the original failure was a path, permission, or file-lock issue rather than a damaged tracerpt executable.

Make sure the ETL producer has stopped before conversion. For a trace created with logman, stop the session through the same workflow that started it. Check that the file is not zero bytes and that its timestamp stops changing. For a real-time session, use -rt with the active session name rather than pointing tracerpt at a file that is still being written.
5. Add the metadata the provider requires
Read the provider’s tracing instructions and provide its schema, TMF files, symbol path, or PDB data with the corresponding options. Use -lr only when an incomplete, best-effort result is acceptable. Save the command line and the warning output with the resulting report so another analyst knows which metadata was unavailable.
6. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use an administrator Command Prompt. Run DISM first, because it supplies the component-store files that SFC may need:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannowDo not close the window until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC scans protected system files and can replace corrupted files with cached copies.
Interpret the final SFC message as follows:
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC found no missing or corrupted protected files. Return to the ETL, metadata, path, and permission checks.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: Restart Windows if requested, then retry the original tracerpt command with the same input.
- SFC could not repair some files: inspect
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logand follow Microsoft’s documented recovery guidance. Do not download a random replacement executable.
Run both commands even if the first one reports that it completed successfully; DISM and SFC repair different layers of Windows.
7. Use Startup Repair when Windows will not start correctly
If corruption affects boot or normal sign-in, enter Windows Recovery Environment. Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair. Startup Repair is designed to address missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, incompatible drivers, and registry errors that prevent Windows from starting. After Windows boots, run the DISM and SFC sequence again if system-file errors remain, then retest tracerpt.
8. Re-test with a known-good command
Use a small, finalized ETL and an output location you can write to:
tracerpt logfile.etl -o logdump.xml -of XMLIf this succeeds while the original trace fails, compare the two inputs and their provider metadata. If every known-good ETL fails after system repair, capture the exact command, output, signature details, and SFC/DISM results for the administrator or support team handling the Windows installation.
Choosing the right troubleshooting approach
Different fixes address different failure layers. The following comparison helps avoid using a high-risk system repair for a simple file-path problem.

How to prevent repeat tracerpt failures
- Stop tracing cleanly: finalize the session before opening the ETL for conversion.
- Keep the original: work on a copy and retain the unmodified ETL when a report may need to be regenerated.
- Use explicit paths: specify both the input and output locations instead of relying on whatever directory launched the command.
- Preserve metadata: keep the provider’s schema, TMF, symbol, and PDB files with the trace documentation when those files are required for decoding.
- Separate outputs: use unique names for XML, CSV, EVTX, report, and summary files so one process does not lock another process’s destination.
- Record context: note the Windows edition, provider, session name, command line, and parser warnings with the resulting report.
These practices do not change tracerpt’s parser, but they make it clear whether a later failure comes from the executable, the trace data, the provider metadata, or the Windows environment.
