tone.exe is only a filename, not proof of a legitimate Windows component. An unexpected copy—especially one launching from a user profile, temporary folder, or an unfamiliar startup entry—should be treated as suspicious until you verify its path, signature, hash, and behavior. Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 documented a ChromeLoader-related campaign that used a file named Tone.exe for background execution and registry-based persistence. That evidence does not prove that every file called tone.exe is malware, so identify your particular file before deleting it.
What is tone.exe?
tone.exe is an executable filename. Windows does not assign a single, universally trusted identity to that name, and the same filename can be used by unrelated software. The important evidence is the complete path, publisher, digital signature, cryptographic hash, startup behavior, and current scanner results.

Unit 42 linked a malicious Tone.exe variant to a ChromeLoader campaign delivered through malicious ISO images and shortcut files. The executable ran in the background, made network connections, and was persisted through a registry Run key. The campaign is described in Palo Alto Networks Unit 42’s analysis.
A 2023 threat-detection report describes earlier Tone.exe payloads as NodeJS Webkit applications. A batch script extracted them from ZIP content and used reg.exe to create persistence; that activity was tracked as AdSearch. Read the report at 2023 Threat Detection Report (PDF).

Those findings explain why an apparently ordinary filename can be risky: a malicious installer can place it in a profile directory, register it to launch at sign-in, and leave no obvious application window. They do not establish that a file supplied with a legitimate program is malicious. Treat the filename as a lead, then verify the individual file.
ThreatInfo lists one historical sample with MD5 8ce8f42a67bedcd67ab653c92e7304ca, metadata identifying ToneSoftware/ToneApplication, a reported size of 128 MB, and a Trojan.Generic detection dated 2022-03-20. This is telemetry for one hash, not a verdict on every file named tone.exe; the record is available at ThreatInfo’s ToneSoftware page. A different size, date, or hash means you are looking at a different build, so do not label your file from this record alone.
A separate BleepingComputer case shows C:Users...AppDataRoamingToneTone.exe in a user Run entry. Forum reports can reveal useful indicators, but you must verify the copy on your own computer. A path under AppDataRoaming is worth checking closely, yet its location alone is not a definitive verdict.

There is no safe-or-malicious answer based on the filename alone. A copy in a vendor’s installed-program directory with a valid signature may belong to legitimate software; an unsigned copy in AppData that starts through a mysterious Run key deserves immediate investigation. An absent signature is a warning, not conclusive proof, because some legitimate programs are unsigned and signatures can be invalidated by file changes.
| What to check | Lower-risk indication | Higher-risk indication |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Expected Windows or known-vendor program directory | User AppData, temporary directory, ZIP extraction folder, or a path you do not recognize |
| Authenticity | Valid signature from the expected publisher and matching product metadata | Unsigned file, mismatched publisher, invalid signature, or generic metadata |
| Persistence | Startup behavior documented by software you installed | Unexpected Run/RunOnce value, scheduled task, or shortcut created without your consent |
| Detection evidence | Clean, current multi-engine results for the exact hash | Several current detections or a hash linked to a known campaign |
| Behavior | Expected activity when its parent application runs | Unexplained network connections, pop-ups, browser changes, high resource use, or repeated recreation |
Use all of these indicators together. A clean filename search is weak evidence, while a matching path, valid signature, known publisher, expected parent application, and clean results for the exact SHA-256 hash provide a much stronger explanation. Conversely, several weak warnings—an unknown publisher, a Run key, network activity, and repeated recreation—justify treating the file as potentially unwanted until a scan proves otherwise.
How to inspect a tone.exe file safely
Do these checks before opening the executable. If the computer is behaving suspiciously, disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet while you prepare the scan. Do not upload confidential files to public services. If you need a multi-engine opinion, submit only a sample whose contents and business sensitivity you are allowed to disclose.

Check the publisher and signature
Right-click the file, select Properties, and review Details. Then open Digital Signatures, select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. Compare the signer with the software you remember installing. A familiar company name in the description is not enough if the signature is missing or invalid. Check that the signed file path is the same copy you found in Task Manager, not another file with the same name.
-
Record identifying details
Write down the file size, creation and modification dates, product name, copyright, and publisher. Calculate a SHA-256 hash from PowerShell:
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathtone.exe" -Algorithm SHA256Replace the path with the one you recorded. Compare the resulting hash with current results from a reputable multi-engine scanner or submit the file for analysis according to that service’s privacy policy. The historical MD5 listed above cannot identify a different build. Keep the hash with your notes so you can tell whether a file that reappears is the same sample or a newly downloaded one.

tone.exe, so inspect the complete command rather than only the task name.Rank #3

How to remove a malicious or unwanted tone.exe
Use this sequence when the file is unrecognized, detected by security software, or associated with suspicious persistence. The exact menus can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft Defender is built into modern Windows, so start with its updated definitions and supported scan modes rather than downloading an alleged replacement executable.
-
Disconnect and preserve evidence
If there are unexplained network connections, browser redirects, credential prompts, or other suspicious symptoms, disconnect from the network. Do not run
tone.exeagain. Keep the path, hash, and screenshots you recorded so you can identify a recreated copy. Do not empty quarantine or delete every related file before the scan has recorded what it found. -
Remove software you do not need
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings → Apps → Apps & features (Windows 10). Sort by installation date and uninstall software you do not recognize or no longer need. Microsoft recommends removing unwanted software as part of its guidance at Protect your PC from unwanted software. Do not uninstall a known driver or business application solely because its name is unfamiliar; research the publisher and installation date first.
-
Update Defender security intelligence
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates → Check for updates. Let the security-intelligence update complete before scanning. Keep Windows connected long enough for the update, then disconnect again if you are handling an active incident. Older definitions may not recognize newer variants, so skipping this step reduces the value of the scan.
-
Run a full scan
In Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options, select Full scan and choose Scan now. Allow the scan to finish; a full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan. Quarantine or remove detections through Windows Security, then restart if requested. Record the detection name and affected path before clearing the history.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when it returns
If detections or symptoms persist, return to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), and choose Scan now. Save open work first. Windows reboots into a separate scanning environment, which can detect malware that hides while normal Windows is running. If the offline scan cannot start, note the error and seek administrator or incident-response help rather than repeatedly launching the suspect file.
-
Recheck startup and scheduled tasks
After quarantine or removal, inspect Startup apps, the Run and RunOnce locations, and Task Scheduler again. Remove or disable only entries that point to the quarantined path or clearly unwanted software. Deleting the visible executable without removing its persistence mechanism can allow another copy to be downloaded or recreated.

Clean up browser and shortcut changes
Review browser extensions, default search settings, notification permissions, and homepage settings. Remove extensions you did not install. Inspect suspicious desktop or taskbar shortcuts: right-click a shortcut, choose Properties, and check that Target points to the intended browser or application rather than a script, an archive, or an unfamiliar executable. Malicious ISO and shortcut delivery makes this check especially important when the problem began after opening an attachment or downloaded image.
-
Protect accounts
If the file executed, credentials may have been exposed. From a separate, known-clean device, change important passwords, starting with email, banking, password-manager, and work accounts. Turn on multifactor authentication where available, review active sessions, and contact financial institutions promptly if you see unauthorized activity. Do not change passwords from the possibly compromised computer until scanning is complete.

Why tone.exe keeps coming back
Recurring appearances usually mean the first copy was not the only component. A Run or RunOnce value, scheduled task, malicious shortcut, browser extension, or bundled installer may be restoring it. Another possibility is that the original file was quarantined but a legitimate program continues to recreate its own executable.
Trace the exact recreation path
Note the timestamp when tone.exe returns. Check Task Manager’s startup list, both user and machine Run keys, RunOnce keys, and Task Scheduler for commands that reference the same directory. Also inspect recently installed applications and browser extensions. If the recreated path changes each time, scan the parent installer or archive rather than deleting individual copies. Compare the new SHA-256 hash with your first record; a changed hash indicates that the replacement is not the same binary.
Scan in the right order
Update security intelligence, run a full scan, and then use Defender Offline if the file returns or cannot be removed. Reboot after quarantine and check persistence again. Do not restore a quarantined item merely to test it. If a Run value points to a missing file, remove or disable that value only after confirming which installed program created it.
Prevent a second download
Install software only from the vendor’s official site or the Microsoft Store. Microsoft warns that third-party downloads can be modified to bundle unwanted software. Avoid pirated installers, unsolicited ISO files, and shortcut attachments. Keep Windows and browsers updated, and leave real-time protection enabled.

Fixing a tone.exe error when no malware is found
A startup error can be a leftover reference to a file that was already removed, or it can belong to a legitimate application. The safest approach is to identify the parent program instead of downloading a replacement tone.exe from a random website. A web page offering a similarly named executable cannot prove that it matches your original file and may introduce another threat.
Best Value
- Read the complete error. Record whether it names a path, missing DLL, blocked publisher, or scheduled task.
- Check installed apps and startup entries. If an uninstalled program still points to
tone.exe, disable its startup entry and uninstall the parent application through Settings. - Repair or reinstall the known application. Use Settings → Apps → Installed apps → [application] → Advanced options → Repair where available, or reinstall from the application’s official source.
- Run Windows system checks only for system-file symptoms. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run
sfc /scannow. If Windows reports component-store problems, runDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, restart, and run System File Checker again. These commands repair Windows components; they do not certify an unknown third-party executable. - Restart and verify. Confirm that the error no longer appears and that no suspicious startup or scheduled-task entry has returned.
How to avoid fake “tone.exe” support
Pop-ups that claim your PC has a tone.exe infection and display a phone number are a common support-scam pattern. Microsoft states that “Microsoft error and warning messages never include a phone number” in its tech-support-scam guidance. Close the browser, do not call the number, do not grant remote access, and do not pay. If you already allowed remote access, disconnect the computer, uninstall the remote-access tool, scan offline, and change passwords from a clean device. A legitimate Windows warning will not require payment or a caller to take control of your screen.
When should you seek professional help?
Get qualified assistance if Defender Offline cannot complete, the machine is controlled by an organization, encrypted files or account takeovers are involved, or the executable returns after you have removed every identifiable persistence entry. Preserve scan results and paths. For a business computer, involve the administrator or incident-response team rather than deleting evidence. Escalate immediately when the file is making unexplained network connections, security tools are disabled, or multiple accounts show suspicious activity.

tone.exeidentifies a filename, not a verified program.- Unexpected copies connected with AppData paths, Run keys, scheduled tasks, or network activity deserve a full investigation.
- Use the exact path, signature, metadata, SHA-256 hash, and current scan results to judge your file.
- Microsoft Defender’s updated full scan and Offline scan are the supported manual removal path.
- Deleting only the executable may fail when persistence mechanisms remain.
- Never trust a pop-up or caller that supplies a phone number or requests remote access to fix a Windows warning.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is tone.exe?
It is an executable filename, not a unique Windows component. Unit 42 associated an unexpected Tone.exe with a ChromeLoader-related campaign, while other software could use the same name. Verify the exact path, signer, hash, and behavior of your copy.
Is tone.exe safe?
The name alone cannot answer that. A valid signature from the expected vendor in a known program directory is less concerning; an unsigned copy in AppData with a Run key, network activity, or current multi-engine detections is suspicious. Check the exact SHA-256 hash rather than relying on a filename reputation.
How do I remove the tone.exe virus?
Disconnect if the computer is behaving suspiciously, update Windows Security intelligence, run a Microsoft Defender Full scan, and use Defender Offline if the file or symptoms persist. Quarantine detections, then remove only confirmed unwanted startup, Run/RunOnce, scheduled-task, shortcut, or extension entries. Do not simply download a replacement file or delete registry values blindly.
Why does tone.exe keep coming back?
A Run or RunOnce value, scheduled task, shortcut, browser extension, or bundled installer may be recreating it. Record the time and new path, compare hashes, inspect both user and machine startup locations, scan the parent installer or archive, and run Defender Offline.
What should I do about a tone.exe error after scanning finds nothing?
It may be a leftover startup reference or a damaged legitimate application. Read the full path in the error, identify the parent program, disable its stale startup entry, and repair or reinstall that application from its official source. SFC and DISM repair Windows components but do not validate an unknown third-party executable.
Can Microsoft or Windows support call me about tone.exe?
No. Microsoft says its error and warning messages never include a phone number. Close the pop-up, do not pay or grant remote access, and scan the computer. If you already allowed access, disconnect, remove the remote tool, scan offline, and change passwords from a clean device.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat an unexpected tone.exe as suspicious but not automatically malicious. Verify its path, signature, metadata, SHA-256 hash, persistence, and behavior; then use updated Microsoft Defender Full and Offline scans and remove the mechanism that keeps recreating it.
