timeinfo.exe is not a known built-in Windows 10 or Windows 11 executable. The name has appeared in a legacy DOS OEM tools folder and in the Windroy Android runtime, so the filename alone cannot establish whether the copy on your PC is legitimate. Treat it as an unidentified program until you verify its path, publisher signature, hash, startup trigger, and scan results.
Do not download a replacement copy or delete the file first. The safe sequence is to identify which program owns it, check how it starts, scan it with Windows Security, and then repair the owning application or remove only an orphaned startup reference.

What timeinfo.exe is—and what it is not
Windows does not document timeinfo.exe as an inbox component of Windows 10 or Windows 11. A process with that name may still be legitimate, but its legitimacy depends on where the file came from and what it does on your machine.

A HijackThis discussion lists C:...OEMCUSTTOOLSDOSTIMEINFO.EXE beside utilities named INFSCAN.EXE, REVERSE.EXE and TREECRC.EXE. That is evidence of a diagnostic utility distributed with a legacy OEM/DOS tool set. It is not evidence that a similarly named file in a modern Windows folder belongs to Microsoft.

Windroy runtime copy
Inventories for Windroy 0.5.2 and 0.5.5 list a 493 KB timeinfo.exe inside the Windroy Android runtime. Such a file is associated with that application, not with Windows itself. If Windroy is not installed on your computer, this example does not explain your copy.
Why the filename is insufficient
Malware and unwanted software can use a familiar-looking name. Conversely, an old utility can be harmless even when Windows does not recognize it. A path under a known application’s installation directory, a valid signature from that application’s publisher, a matching version, and clean independent scans provide useful context; no single item proves safety by itself.
Verify the copy on your PC before changing it
Perform these checks while the process is present. Record what you find so you can identify the owner or submit the correct file for analysis.

Check Properties and the digital signature
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Details and Digital Signatures. Note the publisher, file description, product and file version. On the signature page, select the signer and choose Details; Windows should report whether the signature is valid. An unsigned file is not automatically malicious, especially for old DOS software, but it gives you less evidence of origin.

Identify the parent process and trigger
In Task Manager’s Details tab, add or inspect the Parent process ID column when available, and note which program launched
timeinfo.exe. Also check whether it appears only after signing in, when a particular application opens, or at a scheduled time. The launch context can distinguish an installed utility from an orphaned startup entry. -
Run Windows Security scans
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Run a Quick scan. If the result, location or behavior remains concerning, select Scan options and run a Full scan. Windows Security also offers Custom scan for a selected file or folder and Microsoft Defender Offline scan, which restarts the PC to scan outside the normal Windows session.

Escalate a suspicious file safely
If the path, signer, parent process or scan result is still suspicious, submit the file through Microsoft’s security-reporting workflow or use the current Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT). MSRT targets prevalent malware and complements, rather than replaces, a full antivirus product. Keep the file’s hash and path with your report.

Why timeinfo.exe starts with Windows
A startup message usually means that an application or an auto-start entry is trying to launch the file. The entry can remain after an incomplete uninstall, a moved folder or a failed update. It can also belong to software that is still installed but no longer has a working path.
Find the exact auto-start entry with Autoruns
Microsoft’s Autoruns utility displays the full registry and file locations used by auto-start configuration. Use it to inspect Logon, Services, Scheduled Tasks and other tabs. Search for timeinfo.exe, then record the entry’s command, publisher, location and scheduled-task or registry path before changing anything.
Disable an orphaned entry
- In Autoruns, clear the check box for the specific
timeinfo.exeentry; disabling is safer than deleting while you are testing. - Restart Windows and confirm whether the message or process has stopped.
- If the problem is gone, leave the entry disabled until you have established which old application created it. You can remove the stale entry later after exporting or recording its details.
- If the process still starts, search the remaining Autoruns tabs and Task Scheduler for another command that calls the same path.
Do not disable unrelated entries in bulk. Changing several startup items at once makes it difficult to identify the cause and can prevent required security or hardware software from loading.

Fix a “timeinfo.exe not found” or missing-file error
1. Identify the caller
Read the complete error text and note when it appears: at sign-in, during boot, or when a particular application opens. Use Autoruns to locate a command containing the missing path. Check Task Scheduler for tasks whose actions reference that path, and look in the affected application’s settings or shortcut properties.
If the error names a product, that product is the likely owner. If no installed program claims it, treat the message as an orphaned reference rather than evidence that Windows itself needs a replacement file.
2. Repair the owning application from its publisher
For a legitimate application that is still installed, use its own repair or reinstall option, or download the installer directly from that publisher. Reinstalling restores the correct version and any dependent files; copying an executable from another PC may create a version mismatch or introduce an unsafe file.
If the application is no longer needed, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows editions), then disable any remaining startup or scheduled-task entry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Remove only the stale reference
When scans are clean, no installed application owns the path, and the file is genuinely absent, disable the corresponding Autoruns or Task Scheduler entry and restart. This addresses the error without placing an unknown executable on the system.
Best Value
Handle crashes, freezes and blue screens correctly
A crash that mentions timeinfo.exe does not prove that this process caused the failure. The process may be the component that happened to be running when another driver or hardware fault occurred.
Collect evidence before changing files
- Write down the exact application error, Windows stop code and time of the event.
- Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and System for entries at the same time.
- Record whether the problem occurs only at startup, only with one application, or under a particular device load.
- Preserve the file path, signature, version and SHA-256 hash gathered earlier.
Prioritize drivers and hardware
Microsoft’s 2024 troubleshooting guidance attributes approximately 70% of analyzed blue screens to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code and 15% to unknown causes. These figures describe Microsoft’s analysis and are not a diagnosis of your individual PC. Update Windows, device drivers, BIOS or firmware, and run the hardware checks appropriate to the stop code. If the failure began after a driver or firmware change, use the device maker’s rollback or restore procedure rather than repeatedly deleting timeinfo.exe.
Use Safe Mode when normal startup fails
Microsoft startup guidance recommends Safe Mode and boot logs when startup fails. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and startup programs. If the error disappears there, use Autoruns to re-enable startup items one at a time and restart after each change; the item that brings the error back is your lead. Keep a record of each change so you can undo it.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can you delete timeinfo.exe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Delete or quarantine only after you have recorded the path, checked ownership and completed the scans.
When removal may be appropriate
- Windows Security or another trusted analysis identifies the exact file as malicious or unwanted.
- The file is in a suspicious location, has no legitimate owner and is associated with an unexplained startup trigger.
- The owning legacy application has been intentionally removed and the file is no longer needed.
For a detected threat, follow Windows Security’s quarantine or removal action and restart as requested. For an unowned leftover, disable its auto-start entry first, then delete it only after confirming that no needed application uses it.
When not to delete it
- The file is inside an application you still use and its publisher or installation documentation identifies it.
- The file is part of a legacy diagnostic package you need for that hardware.
- You have not yet determined which task or program launches it.
Do not download a replacement from DLL or “EXE download” websites. Those sites can supply a tampered or incompatible binary and do not establish who should own the file.
Quick Recap
Recovery paths for common symptoms
| Symptom | Best next action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Process appears once, with a known old utility | Verify the utility’s folder and signature; scan it; keep or uninstall the utility as appropriate | Replacing the file from an unrelated download |
| “Cannot find timeinfo.exe” at sign-in | Find the command in Autoruns or Task Scheduler, disable the orphaned entry, restart and test | Deleting random registry values |
| Repeated Defender detection | Quarantine, run Full and Offline scans, and submit the file for analysis if needed | Adding a Defender exclusion |
| Blue screen or system freeze | Capture the stop code and event details; investigate drivers, hardware, Windows and firmware | Assuming the named process is the root cause |
| Application crashes after an update | Identify the owning application and reinstall or repair it from the publisher | Copying an executable from another computer |
Practical decision sequence
- Locate: obtain the complete path from Task Manager.
- Document: record publisher, signature status, version, hash, parent process and startup trigger.
- Scan: run Windows Security Quick scan, then Full, Custom or Offline scan according to the risk.
- Attribute: determine whether a legitimate installed application, a legacy utility or no known owner uses the file.
- Repair: reinstall the owning application from its publisher, or disable the stale startup reference.
- Investigate wider faults: for crashes and blue screens, use stop codes, event logs, driver, hardware, Windows and firmware checks.
- Remove carefully: quarantine a confirmed threat; otherwise delete only an unowned leftover after its startup references are disabled.
