The Xbox app on PC is a Windows hub for finding, downloading and launching Xbox games, including eligible PC titles in the Game Pass catalog. Game Pass is a separate subscription: you sign in with the account that has the subscription, choose an included PC game, and either install its local Windows version or stream a supported title through cloud gaming when your plan, region, device and connection qualify.
Xbox app and Game Pass are different things
The Xbox PC app is software you run on Windows. It provides a storefront-like catalog, installation and launch controls, social tools, remote-play access, rewards and a combined game library. It does not grant Game Pass access by itself.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Game Pass is the separately sold subscription that determines which games your account can use. Your plan, country or region and the current catalog all affect entitlement. A game can leave the catalog, be unavailable in your market or require a plan different from the one you have, so seeing a title in the app does not guarantee that it is included for you.
What you can do without a Game Pass subscription
You can still use the app to sign in, browse games, manage titles you own through supported Xbox and PC entitlements, use chat and friend activity, and view an aggregated library. Buying or owning a PC game through another supported storefront does not make it a Game Pass title; the app may simply list that installed game alongside Xbox games.

What a Game Pass subscription adds
With an eligible plan, the app identifies included PC games and lets you install the local PC version when one is available. Eligible plans can also provide cloud gaming for supported titles. The exact catalog, plan names, regions and cloud availability change, so check the current localized Xbox pages before relying on a particular game or benefit.
How to install and play a Game Pass PC game
The normal download workflow is short, but each step uses the account and hardware checks that determine whether a title will run.
- Install or open the Xbox app. The official PC app page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, about 150 MB of app storage and a 720p display as its baseline requirements. A particular game can require substantially more storage, memory, graphics capability or a newer Windows build.
- Sign in with the right Microsoft account. Use the account that owns the Game Pass subscription or the account entitled to the game. If the app shows a subscription prompt for a title you expect to have, verify the account before reinstalling anything.
- Open the Game Pass catalog. Browse the Game Pass area or search for a title. Read the listing for its platform, plan eligibility, size and system requirements. Catalog membership is not permanent.
- Select an included PC game and choose Install. This downloads the Windows PC build to your selected drive. Downloading is a local installation; it is not the same as streaming the game.
- Wait for installation, then choose Play. The Xbox app can launch the installed title later from your library. The game itself still performs its own startup, account or launcher checks where applicable.
Xbox cautions that the app may require leaving Windows S mode to play games. S mode restricts software installation, so check your Windows edition and the app’s prompt before attempting to install a title.

Download versus cloud gaming
A download runs a local PC version from your computer. Cloud gaming runs a supported game on Xbox servers and streams the result to your screen, which can save local storage and avoid waiting for a large installation. It also makes your experience dependent on internet quality, service availability and supported devices.
| Consideration | Local download | Cloud gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On your PC after installation | On Xbox servers; video and input are streamed |
| Game eligibility | An included PC title or a game you own, with a PC version and entitlement | A supported cloud title, an eligible subscription, and availability in your region |
| Hardware | Your PC must meet that game’s CPU, memory, graphics and storage requirements | Your device runs the stream, but Xbox still requires a supported device and compatible service conditions |
| Internet dependence | Internet is generally needed for downloading, updates and account checks; play performance then depends mainly on the PC | A stable, sufficiently fast connection is central to image quality, latency and continuity |
| Storage | Needs space for the complete local game and updates | Does not install that streamed game locally |
| Input | Use the controls supported by the PC version | Xbox says cloud gaming supports a variety of controllers and other input methods; a controller is not established as mandatory for every game or play method |
Cloud-gaming requirements are not the same as app requirements
Xbox’s December 19, 2025 cloud-gaming guide lists Windows 10 version 20H2 and later for cloud play. The Xbox PC app page separately lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher for the app itself. Those numbers describe different layers: a device might meet a cloud-play requirement while not meeting the current app requirement, or the reverse.
The same guide reported that cloud gaming was available with Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate at the time it was published. Plans and availability are date- and location-sensitive, so verify the offer shown for your account rather than treating those names as a permanent worldwide rule. Xbox also reported a 45% year-over-year increase in cloud-gaming hours in 2025. That is Xbox’s own service-usage figure, not an independent test of latency, reliability or player satisfaction.

Choosing the better method
- Choose a download when you have enough storage, your PC meets the game’s requirements and you want local execution with less dependence on streaming conditions.
- Choose cloud play when the title is supported, your plan and region qualify, and you prefer to start without a large installation.
- Check both options when available. A title can be in the broader Game Pass catalog but lack a PC download entitlement, or be available for download while not supported in the cloud.
System, catalog and account checks before you install
Confirm the app and Windows version
Use the app requirement as a starting point: Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later, approximately 150 MB for the app and a 720p display according to Xbox’s product page. Treat that as an app baseline, not a promise that every game will run. Open the game’s listing and compare its own processor, graphics, memory, storage and operating-system requirements with your PC.
Confirm entitlement and region
Look for the plan and platform labels on the title page while signed in. If a game is marked for console or cloud but not PC, installing the Windows version may not be offered. If a title is absent from your catalog, it may be a plan, regional or catalog-rotation issue rather than an app failure.
Confirm storage and installation location
Large games can require much more space than the 150 MB app. Select a drive with room for the download and future updates, and remember that a failed or interrupted download can leave temporary files until the app cleans them up. Do not confuse an installed game shown in the aggregated library with a game included in your subscription.

Features beyond Game Pass downloads
Social and account tools
Xbox lists chat and friend activity across PC, mobile and console, along with account connections and rewards. These features sit beside the catalog; they do not change which games your Game Pass plan includes.
Remote play from your Xbox console
The PC app can provide remote play from an Xbox console. That is different from cloud gaming: remote play uses your own console as the host, while cloud gaming uses Xbox’s servers and a supported cloud catalog. The app’s remote-play option therefore does not turn every console game into a PC download.

Xbox Mode on Windows 11
Xbox Mode is a related Windows 11 experience, not another name for Game Pass and not a replacement for the Xbox PC app. Xbox began rolling it out in select markets on April 30, 2026. It is a controller-optimized, full-screen interface intended to make the Game Pass catalog and installed games from leading PC storefronts easier to reach.
Because the rollout is market-based, do not assume every Windows 11 PC has Xbox Mode. Its availability is separate from the general Xbox app requirement, and seeing the app on a computer does not prove that the Xbox Mode interface is enabled for that device.
Troubleshooting common problems
The app says you do not have access to a game
- Check that you are signed in with the Microsoft account holding the subscription or purchase.
- Read the game’s platform and plan labels; console-only or cloud-only access does not create a PC download entitlement.
- Check whether the title has left the catalog or is unavailable in your country.
The Install button is missing or the download fails
- Compare your Windows version with the app requirement and check whether Windows S mode is blocking the installation.
- Confirm that the destination drive has enough free space for the game and updates.
- Review the game’s own hardware requirements rather than relying only on the app’s 150 MB figure.
Cloud play is unavailable or unstable
- Verify that the game supports cloud play and that your current plan and region are eligible.
- Use a supported device and a stable internet connection; streaming quality and input delay can deteriorate even when the app opens normally.
- Try a supported input method. Xbox recognizes multiple controllers and other inputs, but support can vary by game and device.
A game appears in the library but is not included
The aggregated library is designed to combine installed games from supported storefronts with Xbox and Game Pass entries. Its presence is not an entitlement signal. Open the game’s detail page and check the purchase or subscription status tied to the account that supplied it.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you want to browse, chat and manage games, or are you expecting the app itself to provide a subscription? Install the app for the former; obtain Game Pass separately for subscription access.
- Is the specific game labeled for PC, and is it included with your plan in your region today?
- Can your PC meet the game’s requirements and hold the installation? If yes, download it for local play.
- If not, is the title cloud-supported and are your device, Windows version, connection, plan and region eligible? If yes, stream it instead.
- Are you on Windows 11 and do you see Xbox Mode in your market? Treat it as an optional controller-focused interface, not as a different subscription.
For current plan, catalog and regional details, start with Xbox’s Game Pass getting-started page and the app’s official PC-app requirements. Xbox’s library aggregation announcement is documented in this Xbox Wire article.
