The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY, also called USDX) measures the U.S. dollar against a fixed basket of six major currencies. Bitcoin and DXY can sometimes move in opposite directions, but there is no permanent rule that Bitcoin rises whenever DXY falls. The observed relationship changes with the period studied, the dollar index selected, the data frequency and the statistical method.
That distinction matters because DXY is not a measure of U.S. domestic purchasing power or the dollar against every country. It is an exchange-rate index dominated by the euro. A chart that uses the Federal Reserve’s broad trade-weighted dollar index is measuring something different, even if it is labeled simply “the dollar.”

What the U.S. Dollar Index measures
ICE’s U.S. Dollar Index compares the dollar with six foreign currencies through a geometrically averaged calculation. ICE calculates it intraday from spot prices for the component currency pairs. The basket is fixed, so each currency keeps a specified weight rather than changing automatically with current trade flows.
The euro accounts for 57.6% of the basket. Consequently, a large move in EUR/USD can have a substantial effect on DXY even when the dollar’s exchange rates against other currencies are comparatively quiet. The index is therefore best understood as a particular market benchmark, not as a complete score for every aspect of dollar strength.

The six-currency basket
| Currency | Weight in DXY |
|---|---|
| Euro | 57.6% |
| Japanese yen | 13.6% |
| British pound | 11.9% |
| Canadian dollar | 9.1% |
| Swedish krona | 4.2% |
| Swiss franc | 3.6% |
These percentages are the published ICE construction described by ICE Futures U.S. in 2015. They are basket weights, not forecasts and not current market levels. A DXY reading is an index value; one index point is not the same thing as a one-percent change in the dollar, and the reading does not directly state how much U.S. purchasing power has changed at home.
How the index came about
The Federal Reserve developed the index in 1973 as an external bilateral trade-weighted average, after major currencies began to float. ICE administers the index today. The basket changed once, in January 1999, when the euro replaced several European currencies. The combined weight assigned to those former currencies remained 57.6%, which became the euro’s weight.
Because the basket has remained fixed since that change, DXY is easy to compare through time but does not continually rebalance to reflect the latest pattern of U.S. trade. That fixed design is one reason analysts may choose a different dollar series for a question about the United States’ current trading relationships.
DXY is not the same as a Federal Reserve dollar index
The Federal Reserve publishes trade-weighted dollar indexes intended to estimate the overall effects of exchange-rate movements on U.S. international trade. Its data include a broad index and separate advanced-economy and emerging-market sub-indexes. Those measures use trading-partner currencies and trade-based weights, rather than ICE’s fixed six-currency basket.

Neither series is automatically “the correct dollar index.” The right choice depends on the question. DXY is the conventional benchmark in many market conversations and derivatives markets. A Federal Reserve broad index is designed to represent a wider set of trade relationships.
Why chart labels matter
FRED displays Bitcoin alongside the Federal Reserve’s Nominal Broad U.S. Dollar Index. That visualization can help demonstrate how to align two time series, but it is not a Bitcoin-versus-DXY chart. If you use or interpret such a chart, identify the dollar series by its full name. A conclusion about Bitcoin and the Federal Reserve’s broad index should not be presented as a conclusion about ICE DXY.
Why people compare DXY with Bitcoin
Bitcoin is commonly quoted in U.S. dollars, so market participants naturally watch dollar benchmarks when interpreting its price. A stronger dollar can coincide with tighter global financial conditions or a reduced willingness to hold risk-sensitive assets; a weaker dollar can coincide with greater appetite for assets priced in dollars. Those are possible market channels, not a mechanical formula. Bitcoin also has crypto-specific supply, demand, leverage, custody, regulatory and network factors that can overwhelm a broad currency signal.

The comparison becomes especially fragile when the two series are viewed at different frequencies. A daily chart can show an inverse-looking pattern that disappears in hourly returns, while a multi-year chart can hide shorter episodes in which both assets rose together. The index selected also matters: a relationship with DXY cannot be assumed to match a relationship with the Federal Reserve’s broad index.

What empirical studies say about Bitcoin and dollar strength
Available studies do not establish a universal, stable inverse Bitcoin–DXY rule. They examine different periods and ask different statistical questions, so their findings should not be merged into one timeless correlation.
2025 wavelet study: inverse movement was sporadic
A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Risk and Financial Management in 2025 analyzed daily Bitcoin and DXY prices from August 2015 through June 2024. Using a wavelet method, it reported that Bitcoin’s out-of-phase relationship with DXY was lower and more sporadic than the corresponding relationship for mainstream assets.
“Lower and more sporadic” is important. The result does not provide a permanent correlation coefficient, a guaranteed trading rule or a current 2026 estimate. Wavelet analysis examines co-movement at multiple time scales, so the result can differ between short and long horizons. The study’s sample ends in June 2024; it should not be described as a live measure of the relationship today.
New York Fed event study: a different question
A February 2023 New York Fed staff report used an event study of intraday macroeconomic news. Its key result was that, unlike other U.S. asset classes, Bitcoin was orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in the study’s design. The authors, Gianluca Benigno and Carlo Rosa, were describing Bitcoin’s reaction to the selected news events, not claiming that Bitcoin has no relationship with DXY over every period.

An event response and a rolling price correlation answer different questions. An asset can show little reaction to a specific category of announcements while still moving with another asset over a longer window, or the reverse. The report therefore adds context but does not settle whether Bitcoin usually moves opposite DXY.
Kansas City Fed bulletin: risk-asset behavior in stress periods
A Kansas City Fed bulletin examining safe-haven behavior found a weak positive correlation between Bitcoin and the S&P 500 during financial-stress periods in its sample. In that analysis, Bitcoin behaved more like a risk asset than a dependable safe haven. This does not equal a direct estimate of Bitcoin’s correlation with DXY, and it should not be extended to every stress episode.
The finding is nevertheless relevant to dollar comparisons. If investors are selling risk assets to raise cash, Bitcoin may fall even while the dollar strengthens. If risk appetite and liquidity improve, Bitcoin may rise for reasons that have little to do with a day-to-day change in DXY. Treating Bitcoin as an automatic hedge against dollar strength ignores the conditional, risk-sensitive behavior documented in that analysis.
Does Bitcoin usually rise when DXY falls?
Not reliably enough to use that sentence as a rule. Bitcoin and DXY have often displayed inverse-looking moves over selected windows, but the inverse relationship is not stable across all horizons or market conditions. The 2025 wavelet study specifically characterized the out-of-phase relationship as relatively sporadic, and the other studies examined different forms of market response rather than a permanent BTC–DXY correlation.
Best Value
A falling DXY can accompany a rising Bitcoin price when market participants are adding risk, liquidity is improving or other crypto-specific demand is strong. Bitcoin can also fall while DXY falls if a separate shock is affecting digital assets. Conversely, both can rise during a period when dollar demand and Bitcoin demand are being driven by different forces. These examples explain why the direction of one series cannot, by itself, forecast the other.
Correlation also does not prove causation. Even a statistically negative correlation could reflect common responses to interest-rate expectations, liquidity, positioning or risk sentiment rather than a direct effect running from DXY to Bitcoin. A useful analysis must state the period, frequency, dollar series, transformation and statistic used.
How to compare Bitcoin with the correct dollar series
If you are building a chart or testing a claim, use a defined procedure rather than relying on visual impressions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Identify the dollar index. Confirm whether the series is ICE DXY, the Federal Reserve Nominal Broad U.S. Dollar Index or another Fed sub-index. Do not shorten every label to “USD” or “the dollar.”
- Record the basket and purpose. For DXY, note the six-currency fixed basket and its 57.6% euro weight. For a Fed index, note that the measure is trade-weighted and designed around U.S. trading partners.
- Align timestamps. Use the same observation frequency and comparable time zones for Bitcoin and the dollar series. Intraday comparisons require particular care because cryptocurrency trades continuously while many macroeconomic series follow market-session conventions.
- Choose prices or returns explicitly. A correlation of price levels can be dominated by long-term trends. Returns, changes or another transformation answer a different question. State which one you use.
- Define the window. Report start and end dates and, if relevant, examine several windows. A result from August 2015 through June 2024 is not a current 2026 estimate.
- Select the statistic and interpretation. Pearson or rank correlation, event-study response and wavelet co-movement are not interchangeable. Name the method and avoid calling it a forecast unless it has been tested as one.
- Check for regime changes. Separate calm markets, financial-stress periods and major crypto-specific events when the question calls for it. Do not assume one average describes every regime.
- Refresh the data for current claims. No current numerical BTC–DXY correlation is established here. A present-day figure requires fresh, aligned data and a clearly defined calculation.
Common mistakes when reading a BTC–DXY chart
- Confusing DXY with a broad dollar index: the series may be the Federal Reserve’s trade-weighted index even when the chart title says only “dollar.”
- Reading an index level as a percentage: a move of one DXY point is not automatically a one-percent change.
- Treating DXY as domestic inflation: DXY measures exchange rates against its basket, not the cost of goods and services inside the United States.
- Assuming the euro is a minor component: its 57.6% weight means EUR/USD developments can heavily influence the index.
- Inferring causation from an inverse chart: co-movement can reflect shared reactions to liquidity or risk conditions.
- Combining incompatible studies: an intraday news event study, a daily wavelet analysis and a stress-period safe-haven test do not measure the same thing.
- Calling an old sample current: the 2025 wavelet paper’s observations end in June 2024, so it cannot serve as a 2026 correlation estimate.
A practical decision framework for interpreting a DXY move
Start by asking what changed in the dollar series and over what interval. If DXY moved because EUR/USD moved, the implication may differ from a move spread across several component currencies. Then ask whether Bitcoin’s move occurred at the same frequency and whether a crypto-specific event provides a more direct explanation.
Next, test the claim against the appropriate evidence. A question about immediate reactions to a central-bank announcement calls for an event-study design. A question about several years of co-movement calls for aligned time-series data and a stated correlation or multiscale method. A question about crisis hedging requires stress-period analysis, not a simple full-sample chart.
Finally, treat the result as conditional information. DXY can be one input into a broader market assessment, but it is not a standalone Bitcoin signal. The evidence reviewed supports careful comparison, precise labeling and regular updates rather than a promise that Bitcoin will rise whenever the dollar index falls.
Quick Recap
What the index can—and cannot—tell a Bitcoin reader
- DXY tells you how the dollar is moving against a fixed six-currency basket administered by ICE.
- It gives especially strong exposure to euro-dollar movements because the euro carries 57.6% of the basket.
- It does not tell you the dollar’s domestic purchasing power or represent every trading partner equally.
- A Federal Reserve broad index may be more appropriate for a trade-weighted question, but it is not DXY.
- Bitcoin’s relationship with either dollar measure depends on the sample, frequency, market regime and method.
- An observed correlation is descriptive; by itself it is neither proof of causation nor a reliable forecast.
