For one photo attached directly to a regular X (formerly Twitter) post, use a standard aspect ratio from 2:1 through 3:4. X says images in that range display in full, but its current posting guidance does not prescribe one universal pixel canvas. If you mean a website link-preview card, the official pages do not establish a single current pixel size for organic cards, so do not treat a commonly repeated number such as 1200 × 628 as an X requirement.
The correct specification depends on where the image appears: an attached post photo, an organic link card, a paid advertisement, Media Studio, or a profile. Those are separate products and should not share one “Twitter preview size.”
The answer for a photo attached to an X post
X’s Help Center says: “When you Post a single photo, images with standard aspect ratios (between 2:1 and 3:4) will display in full to allow for a taller photo, without sacrificing quality, relevance, or engagement.” See X’s photo and GIF posting guidance.
Aspect ratio compares width with height. The range includes wide images near 2:1 and tall images near 3:4. It is a ratio range, not a minimum-resolution rule or a requirement to create one particular pixel size. Export at a sensible resolution for your design, then check the actual composition in the post composer before publishing.

Keep important content inside the safe area
Place faces, logos, labels and other essential details away from the extreme edges. The ratio guidance describes the normal display behavior for a single attached photo; other clients, layouts or multi-image posts can present content differently. A composer preview is the final check for your account and current app.
If “preview image” means a website link card
A link card is generated from a URL in your post, rather than being a photo you attach directly. The official pages reviewed do not provide one current, universal pixel recommendation for an organic X website card. That means there is no verified X-mandated answer such as “always use 1200 × 628” for every organic link preview.
Do not copy an advertising specification and present it as an organic-card requirement. Link-card rendering depends on the page’s metadata, the card type available to the account and URL, and the device or client showing the post. If a precise organic-card dimension is critical to a campaign, obtain current documentation for that exact card type rather than relying on an old blog post.
What you can control on your own page
- Use a high-quality social image in the page metadata intended for sharing.
- Keep text and logos away from the edges so a client’s crop is less damaging.
- Test the URL in the X composer and inspect the card before publishing.
- Update the source image and allow caches to refresh if an old preview persists.
Paid X image ads use different specifications
X Ads has placement-specific creative guidance. The figures below are advertising recommendations, not requirements for an ordinary attached photo or an organic link card. X also warns in its Promoted Ads FAQ that there are no “one-size-fits-all specifications” because X appears across devices, platforms and screen resolutions.

Use the specification for the placement and format you purchased. A paid-ad number cannot answer the separate question “What size should my ordinary post photo be?”

Media Studio limits are upload constraints, not preview dimensions
X’s Media Studio Library guidance lists JPG or PNG images, a maximum file size of 20 MB and a maximum resolution of 8192 × 8192 pixels. X explicitly says those instructions apply to Media Studio only; do not assume they are rules for the developer API, Pro Media API, desktop upload or mobile upload.
These limits tell you what Media Studio can accept. They do not promise that an image will appear at 8192 × 8192 in a post or link card.
Profile images have their own dimensions
For profile customization, X recommends a 400 × 400 pixel profile photo and a 1500 × 500 pixel header image. The figures come from X’s profile customization guidance. They answer profile-asset questions only; neither is an ordinary post-photo or website-card requirement.
How to choose and prepare the right file
- Identify the placement. Decide whether the asset is an attached post photo, an organic website card, paid creative, Media Studio upload or profile image.
- Apply the relevant evidence. For a single attached photo, stay between 2:1 and 3:4. For ads, follow the exact placement specification. For profiles, use the profile dimensions. For an organic card, treat the pixel requirement as unresolved in the official guidance.
- Export a clean source. Use JPG or PNG as appropriate, avoid unnecessarily aggressive compression and keep text readable at phone size.
- Preview in X. Add the image or URL in the composer, inspect the crop and verify that the subject and text remain visible.
- Check accessibility. Add an image description when the image conveys information that is not already in the post. X documents this process at its image-description help page.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I need one exact Twitter preview pixel size.”
First determine the image context. X gives a ratio range for a single attached photo, not one universal canvas. A link card, ad, profile asset and Media Studio upload have different rules.
“1200 × 628 is the official organic-card size.”
The official material cited here does not establish that as a universal organic-card requirement. Treat it, at most, as a third-party convention and verify the current card documentation for your specific use.

“The ad specification must be the post specification.”
It is not. Ad dimensions are placement-specific. Use the X Ads creative specifications for paid campaigns and the photo-post ratio guidance for an attached organic photo.
“My link preview still shows an old image.”
Confirm that the page’s sharing metadata points to the new file, publish the change, then test again after caches have had time to refresh. X’s official pages reviewed here do not state one guaranteed cache-clearing interval.
