What Is the Thanos Copter? The Marvel Comics Story Behind the LEGO Easter Egg

The Thanos Copter is exactly what its name suggests: an ordinary helicopter associated with Thanos in the reported 1979 issue Spidey Super Stories #39. The joke is the mismatch between Marvel’s cosmic villain and an Earthbound aircraft with “Thanos” printed on its side. A reported LEGO set, The Marvel Skyline (67006), is scheduled to hide the copter in its street scene, and the same gag later appeared in Loki season one, episode five.

The comic plot and LEGO inclusion come from a specialist report rather than a direct examination of the 1979 issue or a confirmed LEGO product listing. Those limits matter: the copter is a genuine Marvel reference, but details about the upcoming set should be treated as reported launch information until LEGO publishes its final listing.

What the Thanos Copter is

A real comic reference, not a fan invention

The Thanos Copter is a helicopter used by Thanos in the reported story “Spidey Super Stories” #39, published in 1979. It is not a new vehicle created for LEGO, and it is not a nickname for one of Thanos’s spacecraft. In the story account published by Brick Fanatics, the aircraft is a conventional Earth-style helicopter with Thanos’s name visibly emblazoned on it.

That conspicuous labeling is central to the gag. Thanos is normally presented as a cosmic Titan whose schemes involve the Infinity Stones and planetary-scale stakes. Putting him in a plainly recognizable helicopter, marked almost like a personal company vehicle, turns an imposing supervillain into someone using an improbably practical form of transport.

Why the joke works

The humor depends on contrast rather than on the helicopter having unusual powers. The vehicle is visually mundane, while Thanos is one of Marvel’s most powerful antagonists. The name on the side removes any mystery about whose helicopter it is, making the image intentionally direct and slightly absurd. Later appearances preserve that same visual idea instead of redesigning the vehicle into a high-tech craft.

The reported comic origin in Spidey Super Stories #39

Issue, year and intended readership

Brick Fanatics identifies the original appearance as Spidey Super Stories #39 from 1979 and describes the series as aimed at younger readers. That attribution is the basis for the commonly repeated origin story. The available account is a secondary report; it should not be presented as a page-by-page verification of the original comic.

Spidey Super Stories was associated with a lighter, accessible style of Spider-Man storytelling. In that setting, a broad visual joke such as a supervillain arriving in a labeled helicopter fits the tone more naturally than it would in a serious cosmic saga. The issue’s reported use of the copter is therefore best understood as a playful children’s-comics image that later readers rediscovered.

What happens in the reported plot

According to the Brick Fanatics account, Thanos uses the helicopter while pursuing the Tesseract. He encounters street-level heroes, drops the cube and is arrested. The sequence is deliberately anticlimactic: a character associated with universe-changing power ends up losing the object he wants and being taken into custody after using an ordinary aircraft.

Those plot details should remain qualified as a secondary-source summary. They explain why the image became memorable, but the reviewed evidence does not establish that every panel or event has been independently checked against an original copy of issue #39.

What the comic does—and does not—establish

  • It establishes the reported early appearance of a Thanos-branded helicopter in a Marvel comic.
  • It supplies the ordinary-versus-cosmic contrast that later adaptations reference.
  • It does not, on the evidence available here, establish the helicopter as a recurring vehicle in Thanos’s mainline mythology.
  • It should not be confused with Thanos’s first overall comic appearance, which Marvel places in Iron Man (1968) #55.

Where the copter fits in Thanos’s Marvel history

Marvel’s official Thanos reading guide identifies Iron Man (1968) #55 as the character’s first appearance. It also highlights major later stories including The Thanos Quest (1990) #1 and Infinity Gauntlet (1991) #1. Those works establish the character’s broader identity as a Titan pursuing extraordinary power, but Marvel’s guide does not independently document the Thanos Copter’s debut.

LEGO’s official character description similarly presents Thanos as a Titan pursuing the Infinity Stones. That context makes the helicopter joke legible: readers know Thanos as a figure associated with cosmic ambition, so an unmistakably normal aircraft feels deliberately out of place. The copter is a tonal detour, not a replacement for the character’s established origin or powers.

How it became a LEGO Easter egg

The reported set inclusion

A Brick Fanatics report dated October 9, 2026 says LEGO Marvel The Marvel Skyline, set 67006, is scheduled for release on January 1, 2027. The report says the set contains the Thanos Copter as one of several small details in a broader street-and-skyline scene. It is described as an Easter egg within the model, not as a separately sold helicopter set.

These are reported launch figures, not independently confirmed official-store information in the reviewed material. Prices, release timing and included details can change by region or before release, so the final LEGO product listing is the authoritative check.

What “Easter egg” means here

In this context, an Easter egg is a recognizable reference placed inside a larger design for fans to spot. The copter’s value is its connection to an obscure, funny comic image; it is not the primary subject of the skyline model. A buyer should therefore expect a scene detail rather than a dedicated Thanos vehicle with its own separate packaging or product identity.

How to check the final information

  1. Look for LEGO’s official product page for set 67006 when the listing is live.
  2. Check the page for the confirmed release date and the exact regional price shown for your country.
  3. Review the official images and description to confirm that the Thanos Copter is included in the final model.
  4. Compare the set number and name carefully; a similarly themed Marvel skyline product is not necessarily the same release.

Until that listing is available, the October 9, 2026 report is useful evidence of the planned Easter egg but not a substitute for LEGO’s final specifications.

The Loki season-one cameo

What appears on screen

The Thanos Copter also appears in season one, episode five of Loki. The episode takes place in the Void, a setting filled with discarded and unexpected objects. The helicopter functions as a quick visual surprise for viewers familiar with the comic reference rather than as an important vehicle in the plot.

How the reference was approved

In a 2021 interview report by ComicBook.com, director Kate Herron said she did not initially know about the reference. She credited executive producer Kevin Wright with suggesting it and said Marvel approved the idea:

“For example, the Thanos Copter, Kevin Wright, my executive producer, that was him.”

Herron also described her reaction when Wright explained the idea:

“I didn’t know about that, and I remember he told me about it and I was like, ‘That’s so funny. We have to, can we put that in there?’ And they [Marvel] were like, ‘Yeah, we totally can.’”

The account presents the cameo as a deliberate comics nod, while also showing that it was not necessarily a reference every member of the production team already knew. That combination—an obscure source image and a brief appearance—helped the copter work as a discovery for longtime readers.

Answers to the questions readers usually ask

Was Thanos really in a helicopter in the comics?

Yes, the reported source is Spidey Super Stories #39 from 1979. The specific chase, dropped Tesseract and arrest come from a secondary summary, so those details should be described as reported rather than as independently verified from the issue itself.

Is the Thanos Copter an important part of Marvel continuity?

It is best treated as a humorous, memorable episode rather than a central element of Thanos’s mythology. Marvel’s official character material emphasizes his Titan identity and Infinity Stone pursuit, while the copter is a comic contrast built around an ordinary vehicle.

Does LEGO sell a separate Thanos Copter?

The reported information does not identify a standalone product. Set 67006 is said to include the helicopter as a small detail within The Marvel Skyline scene.

Why did the Loki team include it?

Kate Herron’s 2021 account says executive producer Kevin Wright proposed the reference, Herron liked the joke and Marvel approved it. The cameo was therefore an intentional comics nod, not an accidental background object.

A short timeline

  1. 1968: Marvel lists Iron Man #55 as Thanos’s first appearance.
  2. 1979: The Thanos Copter is reported to appear in Spidey Super Stories #39.
  3. 1990–1991: Marvel’s reading guide highlights The Thanos Quest #1 and Infinity Gauntlet #1 as major Thanos stories.
  4. 2021: Director Kate Herron discusses the copter’s inclusion in Loki season one, episode five.
  5. October 9, 2026: Brick Fanatics reports the copter as an Easter egg in LEGO set 67006.
  6. January 1, 2027: The reported scheduled release date for The Marvel Skyline 67006.

What to keep in mind when discussing it

  • Call the 1979 appearance a reported debut unless you have directly verified a copy of Spidey Super Stories #39.
  • Separate Thanos’s established Marvel history from the helicopter gag; the official reading guide does not document the copter’s origin.
  • Describe the LEGO inclusion as announced or reported until LEGO’s own product page confirms the final model.
  • Do not mistake the helicopter for a separately sold LEGO set based solely on its presence in a skyline scene.
  • Use the Loki cameo as evidence of the reference’s later visibility, not as proof that the vehicle was a major recurring part of Marvel stories.

The Thanos Copter endures because every version preserves the same simple idea: a villain built for cosmic spectacle using the most conspicuously normal transport imaginable. The comic supplied the joke, Loki made it recognizable to a wider screen audience, and the reported LEGO skyline inclusion turns it into a spot-the-reference detail for builders.
