What Is the Speed of Sound? Definition, Formula, and Examples

The speed of sound is how fast a small mechanical disturbance travels through a material medium. It is not the speed at which the medium itself moves, and it is not one fixed number: the value depends on the material and its conditions. In air, for example, temperature affects sound speed.

What does “speed of sound” mean?

Sound is a mechanical disturbance that travels through a medium as particles interact. The speed of sound is the rate at which that disturbance propagates—not the speed at which air or another material flows as a whole. NASA Glenn Research Center describes it as “the speed of transmission of a small disturbance through a medium” (NASA Glenn Research Center, “Speed of Sound”).

Because sound needs a material medium, it cannot propagate through a vacuum. Its speed depends on the medium’s physical properties and state, so there is no single speed of sound that applies everywhere.

What determines the speed of sound?

In a gas

For an ideal gas, NASA Glenn gives the relationship a = √(γRT). Here, a is the speed of sound, γ is the ratio of specific heats, R is the gas-specific constant, and T is absolute temperature. Use Kelvin or Rankine for T, not Celsius directly. For a given gas under this model, sound speed increases with the square root of absolute temperature. Gas identity also matters because gases differ in their molecular and heat-capacity properties (NASA Glenn Research Center).

In liquids and solids

In liquids and solids, sound speed depends on how the material responds elastically to compression as well as on its density. In fluids, the value is tied to the fluid’s thermodynamic state; NIST describes it as derivable at a particular state point from the fluid’s thermodynamic surface (NIST, Fluid Properties).

How fast does sound travel in air, water, and steel?

NASA’s educational comparison gives these values for the listed materials at 21°C (70°F):

Medium Temperature Speed
Air 21°C (70°F) 331 m/s (740 mph)
Sea water 21°C (70°F) 1,524 m/s (3,414 mph)
Solid steel 21°C (70°F) 5,180 m/s (11,600 mph)

These are representative published values, not universal constants for each material under every condition. The table shows that sound travels at different speeds in different media.

Why do sources give different speeds for sound in air?

Air’s sound speed changes with temperature, so figures quoted for different conditions need not conflict. NASA’s normal-atmosphere table lists 340 m/s at sea level and 15°C (59°F), 295 m/s at 11,000–20,000 m and −57°C (−70°F), and 301 m/s at 29,000 m and −48°C (−53°F). These are examples from that table, not fixed values for every atmospheric condition at those altitudes (NASA, Speed of Sound).

Chiffonade Ultrasonic Levitation Module DIY Kit – Physics Experiment Tool with Standing Wave Controller for STEM Education & Electronic Projects
  • Stable Levitation: Suspends foam balls consistently for 24 hours using ultrasonic standing wave technology with precise 50x40x28mm module
  • Practical Design: Features durable PCB construction with ultrasonic probes that maintain suspension even in horizontal positions
  • Easy to Use: No programming is required. This mini ultrasonic levitation module is already assembled and is mainly used by DIY enthusiasts to learn the ultrasonic standing wave levitation technology

  • Complete Kit: Includes all necessary components with assembled circuit board for immediate project start, mainly used for DIY enthusiasts to learn about ultrasonic standing wave suspension

For that reason, “the speed of sound is 343 m/s” is incomplete unless the air temperature and conditions are stated. When quoting a value, include its medium and conditions rather than treating it as a universal constant.

How are sound speed, frequency, and wavelength related?

For a sound wave, propagation speed (v), frequency (f), and wavelength (λ) are related by v = fλ. Frequency describes how many wave cycles pass a point per second; wavelength is the distance between corresponding points on successive cycles. Frequency is not the speed of sound, and a change in pitch does not by itself mean the disturbance travels faster through the same medium and conditions. See OpenStax, “Speed of Sound, Frequency, and Wavelength”.
