The power identified by recent coverage as Demon Slayer’s “rarest” is the Selfless State: a condition in which Tanjiro suppresses the fighting spirit that Akaza’s Compass Needle detects. The available evidence does not show that creator Koyoharu Gotouge recently unveiled or directly explained it, so that headline framing should be treated cautiously.
What is Tanjiro’s Selfless State?
In the explanation given by OpenGames’ October 5, 2026 article, the Selfless State is a mental condition that masks a fighter’s fighting spirit. That matters in Tanjiro’s battle with Akaza because Akaza’s Compass Needle is described as sensing fighting spirit. The explanation is secondary coverage, not a verified statement from Gotouge or a technical definition reproduced on the official publisher pages.

Shueisha’s official synopsis for Volume 18 places Tanjiro and Giyu’s confrontation with Upper Rank Three Akaza in the relevant story context and refers to Tanjiro reaching a state connected with his father’s teaching. It does not give a full explanation of the Selfless State’s mechanics.

How does it help Tanjiro against Akaza?
As described by OpenGames, Akaza’s Compass Needle relies on detecting an opponent’s fighting spirit. If Tanjiro can conceal that signal, Akaza loses the same basis for reading him through the Needle. This is an advantage in that matchup, not evidence that the state automatically makes Tanjiro stronger or faster: the secondary article says it does not itself increase basic strength or speed.
#1 Best Overall
The distinction is important: the reported effect is about what Akaza can sense, rather than a general power boost. The official Volume 18 synopsis confirms the Akaza confrontation and father-related context, but not this detailed account of the technique.
Did Gotouge unveil the power?
The evidence behind the headline does not establish a new announcement by Gotouge. OpenGames identifies the ability and explains it, but provides no direct Gotouge quotation. Shueisha’s volume listing and VIZ’s licensed English chapter listing are publisher sources for the story, not evidence of a recent creator disclosure.
Rank #2
It is therefore more accurate to say that recent coverage highlighted the Selfless State than to say Gotouge newly unveiled it. “Rarest” is also that article’s framing; the available publisher pages do not establish a canon-wide ranking of powers by rarity.
Is the Selfless State the same as the Transparent World?
The available evidence is not enough to treat those terms as interchangeable or to give a complete comparison of their mechanics. The official Volume 18 synopsis refers to a state tied to Tanjiro’s father’s teaching, while the secondary article uses “Selfless State” and also calls it “the Domain of Supremacy.” The latter wording is not verified here as the official English name in the licensed manga.
Rank #3
For exact terminology and how the scene is presented, consult the licensed chapter rather than relying on a secondary article’s label. VIZ lists Chapter 152 in the relevant sequence.
How many characters can use it?
OpenGames says Tanjiro, his father Tanjuro, and Yoriichi are the three known users. The publisher pages cited here do not independently verify that list or establish “three” as an official count, so it should be attributed to that secondary source rather than stated as a confirmed statistic.
Rank #4
Where to read the Akaza confrontation
Shueisha’s official Volume 18 listing is a useful guide to the collected manga volume containing the confrontation. VIZ lists the official English Chapter 152. Both are manga references; the material available here does not establish exact differences between the manga scene and any film adaptation.
