The SCP Foundation is both a fictional secret organization that contains dangerous anomalies and a real collaborative writing community that tells its stories through classified-style files. Its open Creative Commons license lets filmmakers adapt SCP material—including for commercial releases—but requires attribution and share-alike licensing, so no studio can claim exclusive control of the shared universe.
What does SCP mean?
In the fiction, SCP stands for Secure, Contain, Protect: the Foundation’s mission to investigate anomalous entities, objects, places and phenomena, then keep them from harming the public. The Foundation’s official homepage describes it in-universe as “a clandestine organization dedicated to containing dangerous and incomprehensible horrors, keeping them safely from the light of day.”
Outside the fiction, the SCP Foundation Wiki is a collaborative writing site. Its stories appear as case files, research notes, containment procedures and other documents that pretend to be classified records. The format gives different authors room to invent anomalies and viewpoints without requiring every entry to fit one definitive storyline.
Is the SCP Foundation real?
No. The Foundation and the anomalies it contains are fictional. The real-world project is the wiki and its community of writers and artists. The official site invites newcomers to read its guide, explore the setting and join the wiki.

According to a 2026 CinemaBlend report, SCP-style fictional reports began appearing in 2007, and the current Wikidot site was created in 2008. Those dates describe the project’s reported beginnings and website history; they do not make the Foundation an actual organization.
How does the SCP universe work?
Rather than follow one central hero or a single sequence of novels, SCP stories commonly take the form of records about an anomaly: what it does, how it is contained, and what happened during an investigation. Tales and other works can add characters, conflicts and competing interpretations. The document format makes each entry feel like a fragment from a larger institution, while leaving authors room to tell different kinds of horror stories.

The wiki is a real collaborative site, not a publisher that owns an exclusive, fixed canon in the conventional franchise sense. That distinction matters when an outside creator wants to adapt its material: the rules come from the shared license, not from a studio negotiating sole rights to the entire universe.
Can anyone make an SCP movie?
Yes, provided the project follows the wiki’s Creative Commons license. The official licensing guide says derivative works—including films, games and stories—must give attribution and, when they use a particular SCP article, credit its author and link to the source. Derivative works must also be released under CC BY-SA 3.0. The guide summarizes the rule this way: “Any content based on the SCP Foundation is itself going to be under Creative Commons.”

The license allows commercial as well as noncommercial adaptations, but it is not a way to buy exclusive control. The wiki’s staff say they cannot suspend the Creative Commons license or grant exclusive adaptation rights. A film can be distributed theatrically or online if it complies with the license; the official statement says it cannot use DRM to prevent copying or claim exclusive distribution.
One important exception: the former SCP-173 image
The text of SCP-173 remains licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0, but the sculpture image formerly associated with the entry is different. The official licensing guide says Izumi Kato’s Untitled 2004 image is not available under a compatible Creative Commons license and should not be used commercially. Permission to adapt the story does not automatically clear every image associated with it.

What is happening with SCP films in Hollywood?
As of October 2, 2026, the available reports describe separate projects, not one studio-controlled SCP franchise. CinemaBlend reported on July 7, 2026, that producers including Roy Lee’s Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios were developing a feature adaptation connected to the V/H/S anthology franchise. The reported concept uses standalone found-footage segments framed as recovered field documentation of anomalies investigated by the Foundation.
The official SCP statement about that V/H/S-linked film says wiki staff and authors were not consulted or contacted. It also states that A24 cannot hold exclusive rights to SCP material. That is consistent with the site’s open-license rules: a production may make a compliant adaptation, but it cannot lock everyone else out of using material covered by the license.

A separate official statement about an announced NEON film says the staff were satisfied that NEON intended to meet the CC BY-SA requirements. The statement nevertheless emphasizes that it is not an “official” SCP Foundation film: wiki staff are not involved in writing or production, and no staff member is receiving compensation.
| Project | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| V/H/S-linked adaptation | CinemaBlend’s July 7, 2026 report describes a feature-length project with standalone found-footage segments. The official SCP statement says staff and authors were not consulted or contacted and that the film must follow CC BY-SA rules. | A confirmed release date and complete production details are not stated in the cited report or official statement. |
| NEON film | The official SCP statement says staff were satisfied with NEON’s stated intention to follow CC BY-SA requirements, while clarifying that the film is not an official SCP Foundation production and that staff are not involved or compensated. | A confirmed release date, complete production details and a specific narrative format are not stated in the cited official statement. |
These statements distinguish a licensed adaptation from an officially produced one. A project may draw on SCP material and comply with its license without being commissioned, written or controlled by the wiki community.
