The RBI repo rate is the rate at which the Reserve Bank of India lends short-term funds to banks. It can influence the cost of some floating-rate loans and banks’ deposit pricing, but it is not the interest rate every borrower pays or every saver earns. The latest dated RBI snapshot available here lists the repo rate at 5.25% on September 11, 2026; that figure is not confirmed for October 7, 2026.
What is the RBI repo rate?
The repo rate is a central-bank policy rate: the rate at which the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lends to banks for short-term needs. The RBI uses it as a monetary-policy signal. A higher rate can tighten borrowing conditions and a lower rate can ease them, but the effect on a customer depends on the loan or deposit and its terms. PRS Legislative Research describes the repo rate as the rate at which RBI lends money to banks for short-term needs in its February 2026 Monthly Policy Review.

What was the latest dated repo-rate figure?
The RBI rates snapshot associated with September 11, 2026, lists the policy repo rate at 5.25%. The same snapshot lists the standing deposit facility rate at 5.00%, the marginal standing facility rate and bank rate at 5.50%, and the fixed reverse repo rate at 3.35%. These are figures from that dated snapshot, not verified October 7 rates. The snapshot is available on the RBI rates page.
PRS reports that the Monetary Policy Committee kept the repo rate at 5.25% in February 2026. That is historical context; it does not establish whether a later decision changed the rate.

How does the repo rate affect borrowers?
The rate can pass through to borrowers when a floating-rate loan is linked to an external benchmark, such as the RBI repo rate. RBI handbook material says, “Banks are required to extend floating rate loans to Retail and MSME borrowers with reference to external benchmark lending rates only.” The RBI identifies the policy repo rate as one permissible benchmark; specified Government of India Treasury bill yields published by FBIL and other FBIL-published market rates may also be used. This requirement concerns covered retail and MSME lending, not every loan product.
Benchmark changes do not equal the full loan rate
A lender adds a spread or margin to the benchmark, so the borrower’s complete interest rate is not the repo rate alone. The spread and other loan terms matter when working out the rate that applies to an individual account. RBI material on external benchmarks and loan resets is available in its Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy and master-direction material.

Reset timing affects when a change reaches you
The RBI says the exact reset periodicity forms part of the loan contract; the cited direction material requires external-benchmark-linked rates to reset at least once every three months. A benchmark move therefore may not change a borrower’s payment on the same day. Check the sanction letter or loan agreement and ask the lender for the next reset date.

What a rise or cut can mean for an EMI
If the benchmark on a floating-rate loan rises, the applicable loan rate may rise at reset. The lender may respond by increasing the EMI, extending the repayment period, or using a combination of the two. If the benchmark falls, the reverse may happen, subject to the contract and reset timing. Fixed-rate loans and floating loans linked to another benchmark do not necessarily respond to a repo-rate change in the same way.

There is no reliable single EMI change to quote without the outstanding principal, remaining term, current rate, reset date, and the lender’s adjustment method. For your own loan, check:
- Which benchmark applies, and whether it is the RBI repo rate or another reference rate.
- The spread or margin added by the lender.
- The reset frequency and next reset date.
- Whether a rate change affects your EMI, loan tenure, or both.
- Any fees or conditions if you are considering switching loan products.
How does the repo rate affect savers?
The repo rate may influence banks’ funding costs and pricing decisions, but it does not mechanically set every savings-account or term-deposit rate. The RBI snapshot associated with September 11, 2026, lists a savings deposit rate of 2.50% and a term-deposit rate range of 6.00%–6.75% for terms over one year. Those are snapshot indicators, not guaranteed offers from every bank or rates verified for October 7. Check the bank’s current offer and product terms.

When policy rates rise, banks may make new or renewed term deposits more attractive over time; when rates fall, offers on reinvested deposits may decline. Neither response is automatic or immediate. An existing fixed-term deposit generally remains governed by its contracted terms. Compare the annual rate, term, whether the rate is fixed for that term, and the rules and consequences for premature withdrawal.
Repo rate versus the rates customers see
| Rate or product | What it means | RBI snapshot associated with September 11, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Policy repo rate | Rate at which RBI lends short-term funds to banks; a policy benchmark, not a retail loan rate. | 5.25% |
| Standing deposit facility rate | Separate RBI policy rate listed alongside the repo rate. | 5.00% |
| Marginal standing facility rate and bank rate | Separate rates listed by RBI. | 5.50% each |
| Fixed reverse repo rate | Separate RBI rate listed in the snapshot. | 3.35% |
| Savings deposit rate | Deposit-rate indicator; not the repo rate and not a universal bank offer. | 2.50% |
| Term deposit, over one year | Deposit-rate range for the stated term category; individual offers and terms vary. | 6.00%–6.75% |
