The quantum Hall effect is a remarkable electrical phenomenon in which a two-dimensional conductor exposed to a strong magnetic field develops exact, step-like values of Hall resistance instead of changing smoothly. The magnetic field organizes charge carriers into discrete energy levels called Landau levels; as the field or carrier density changes, the measured resistance can stay fixed across a range and then jump to another precise plateau. The effect is not a feature of every Hall measurement. It requires a suitable two-dimensional electron system and sufficiently strong magnetic fields.
That staircase is useful far beyond a physics demonstration. The quantized value is tied to fundamental constants through the von Klitzing relation, RK = h/e2, making quantum Hall devices the basis of precision resistance standards used by national measurement institutes and calibration laboratories. Graphene is being studied as a route to standards that could operate under less demanding conditions than traditional semiconductor systems, while fractional states reveal strong many-electron interactions. The related quantum anomalous Hall effect can produce quantized Hall resistance without an external magnetic field, but accurate present-day devices still require millikelvin temperatures.

Quantum Hall effect in one minute
- What it is: quantized Hall resistance in an effectively two-dimensional conductor under a strong magnetic field.
- What quantized means: resistance forms broad, reproducible plateaus rather than varying continuously.
- What causes it: the field creates discrete Landau levels and fixes how many magnetic-flux quanta are occupied.
- Two forms: integer plateaus are indexed by integer filling factors; fractional plateaus arise from strong electron–electron interactions.
- Why it matters: the ideal plateau values are linked to
RK = h/e2, supporting the SI realization of the ohm. - Where research is moving: graphene may relax operating conditions, while quantum anomalous Hall systems seek quantization without an applied magnetic field.
NIST’s project summary describes the integer and fractional effects, their Landau-level origin and their metrology role: NIST, “Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall Effect” (updated September 2, 2025).

In an ordinary Hall measurement, current flows through a material while a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to that current. The field pushes moving charge carriers sideways. A voltage therefore appears across the sample in the direction perpendicular to the current; this is the Hall voltage. Changing the magnetic field or the carrier density normally changes the Hall response continuously, like moving up or down a ramp.

The quantum Hall effect keeps that sideways geometry but changes the electrical landscape. The conductor is effectively two-dimensional, and the magnetic field is strong enough that the allowed motion is no longer described by a nearly continuous range of energies. Instead, carriers occupy discrete Landau levels. The Hall resistance can then remain locked to one value over a finite interval before switching to another value. The result looks like a staircase superimposed on a measurement that would otherwise be smooth.
| Feature | Ordinary Hall effect | Quantum Hall effect |
|---|---|---|
| Conductor | Can be three-dimensional or two-dimensional | Effectively two-dimensional electron system |
| Magnetic field | Produces a sideways force on carriers | Also organizes carrier energies into Landau levels |
| Hall resistance | Usually varies continuously with field or carrier density | Forms broad, precise plateaus |
| Typical role | Measuring carrier properties and magnetic response | Fundamental-constant-based resistance metrology and many-body physics |
How a magnetic field creates resistance plateaus
1. Confining the carriers to two dimensions
The effect appears when electrons are restricted to a layer or interface thin enough that their relevant motion is effectively two-dimensional. This geometry matters because the magnetic field can organize the carriers into a discrete sequence of allowed energies. A conventional bulk conductor does not automatically show the same quantization simply because a magnet is nearby.
2. Forming Landau levels
A strong perpendicular magnetic field bends the motion of charged particles. In a two-dimensional system, the field groups the available states into Landau levels rather than a continuum. Each level represents an allowed band of orbital motion. The levels are the physical source of the “steps” in the Hall response: the system cannot change its occupied energy states in an entirely arbitrary, smooth way.

3. Filling levels as field or density changes
Two experimental knobs are especially important: the magnetic field and the number of carriers per area. Their ratio determines a filling factor, which can be understood as how the electron population compares with the available magnetic-flux quanta. When a range of conditions leaves the same set of levels effectively filled, the Hall resistance stays pinned to one plateau. Once the next relevant level becomes occupied or emptied, the measurement moves to another plateau.
4. Measuring the transverse voltage
A laboratory sends current through the two-dimensional sample and measures the voltage across it, perpendicular to the current direction. During a field or density sweep, researchers plot Hall resistance against the control variable. A quantum Hall trace shows long, nearly horizontal sections separated by transitions. The longitudinal resistance is measured at the same time to determine whether the device is in a well-developed quantum Hall regime, but the defining visual feature is the quantized transverse resistance.

The filling factor and the ideal resistance formula
The ideal integer quantum Hall relation is:
RH = RK/ν
Here RH is the Hall resistance, ν (the Greek letter nu) is the filling factor, and RK is the von Klitzing resistance constant:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →RK = h/e2
The symbols are fundamental constants: h is Planck’s constant and e is the elementary charge. The formula says that the resistance scale is not set by the dimensions of a particular wire or by an arbitrary calibration artifact. It is determined by constants of nature and by the integer that labels the occupied state. The Nobel Prize background material explains the filling factor as the ratio of electrons to magnetic flux quanta: Nobel Prize Outreach, background material for the 1998 physics prize.
In a real experiment, contacts, sample geometry and measurement electronics still matter. They must be engineered so the measured plateau represents the quantized state rather than wiring errors, leakage or inadequate field control. The ideal relation is the reference value that a resistance standard realizes and compares against.
Integer quantum Hall effect
In the integer quantum Hall effect, well-developed plateaus correspond to integer filling factors such as one, two or another whole-number index. The integer can be introduced through the occupancy of Landau levels: as the field or carrier density changes, an entire number of these levels is filled in the relevant range. The resulting Hall resistance follows the reciprocal relationship RK/ν.
“Integer” describes the filling factor, not a claim that every measured quantity in the device is an integer. The voltage, current and field can all take ordinary continuous values; it is the ratio that labels the plateau. Integer states are the form most directly associated with resistance standards because their quantization is robust enough for precision comparisons when a device is operated in its appropriate high-field regime.

Fractional quantum Hall effect
Fractional quantum Hall states occur at fractional filling factors rather than whole numbers. They cannot be explained adequately by treating electrons as independent particles simply occupying single-particle Landau levels. Strong interactions among the electrons are essential: the many-body system reorganizes into correlated states that produce fractional plateaus.

This makes the fractional effect a window into collective quantum physics. It also means that the phrase “fractional quantum Hall effect” covers a family of states, not one universal behavior. Different fractions can have different microscopic properties. Some even-denominator fractional states are of special theoretical interest because they are expected to support non-Abelian statistics, but that expectation remains an active research topic rather than an established technology or routine application.
| Comparison | Integer quantum Hall | Fractional quantum Hall |
|---|---|---|
| Filling factor | Integer values | Fractional values |
| Basic explanation | Landau-level occupancy provides the starting picture | Strong many-electron correlations are essential |
| Physics revealed | Single-particle quantization in a two-dimensional system | Collective, strongly interacting quantum states |
| Practical status | Foundation of quantized resistance standards | Primarily a research platform for correlated quantum matter |
Why the effect matters for the ohm
The most mature use of the quantum Hall effect is precision electrical metrology. A laboratory can operate a quantum Hall device on a selected plateau, compare an unknown resistance with that quantized value and build a traceability chain back to fundamental constants. The reproducible scale is expressed through RK = h/e2, the von Klitzing relation reported in NIST’s metrology literature: Randolph E. Elmquist, NIST, “What Metrology Gains With Quantized Resistance Standards” (December 1, 2000).
NIST identifies the quantum Hall effect as the basis of the SI resistance standard. In practice, national measurement institutes and calibration laboratories use specialized devices, high-field systems, cryogenic infrastructure and carefully characterized electrical bridges. The chain then supports calibration services and high-accuracy measurements in other laboratories. This is specialized standards infrastructure, not a consumer component that appears in ordinary household electronics.
What a standards laboratory actually does
- Prepare a suitable two-dimensional device. The sample must support a clear quantum Hall regime and provide reliable electrical contacts.
- Establish the required magnetic-field and environmental conditions. The field must be strong enough to separate the relevant Landau levels, while temperature and electrical noise are controlled so the plateau remains well developed.
- Sweep field or carrier density to identify plateaus. Researchers locate a range where the Hall resistance is flat and the device behavior is stable.
- Measure the Hall voltage with precision instrumentation. The current and voltage are compared against the expected quantized value, with corrections and uncertainty budgets documented.
- Transfer the value through a calibration chain. Other resistance standards and instruments can be compared to the quantum Hall reference, extending traceability beyond the original device.
The phrase “resistance standard” therefore refers to a complete measurement system and traceability practice, not merely a material that happens to show a plateau.
What graphene changes
Graphene is a two-dimensional carbon material whose carriers can be probed at its surface. NIST reports active work on graphene quantum Hall systems because graphene can sustain the effect under more relaxed conditions than traditional semiconductor systems. That combination could make future resistance standards easier to operate or broaden the settings in which they are practical.
The qualification matters: graphene is a research route toward higher-temperature or otherwise less demanding standards, not a universal, plug-and-play replacement for every existing quantum Hall standard. Device quality, contacts, field range, temperature, measurement uncertainty and long-term stability still have to be demonstrated for each design. NIST’s quantum-conductance program describes this direction: NIST, “Quantum Conductance”.

Graphene also gives researchers a convenient surface system for studying transport. Its unusual electronic structure makes it valuable for examining both the integer effect and interaction-driven states, while metrologists assess whether a graphene device can provide the same dependable reference behavior as established semiconductor devices.
Quantum Hall effect versus quantum anomalous Hall effect
The quantum anomalous Hall effect is related to the quantum Hall effect but removes one defining ingredient: an externally applied magnetic field. In a quantum anomalous Hall system, internal magnetic order and the material’s electronic structure can produce a quantized Hall resistance without an external field.
| Question | Conventional quantum Hall effect | Quantum anomalous Hall effect |
|---|---|---|
| External magnetic field | Strong applied field is part of the usual setup | Quantized Hall resistance can occur without an external field |
| Underlying setting | Two-dimensional carriers organized into Landau levels | Material-specific internal magnetism and topology generate the Hall response |
| Practical condition | Requires specialized high-field measurement conditions | NIST reports that accurate current devices require millikelvin temperatures |
| Deployment status | Established in resistance metrology | Research challenge for practical, broadly usable standards |
The zero-field label does not mean the two effects are interchangeable. Ordinary quantum Hall devices still rely on an applied magnetic field. NIST’s quantum-transport program discusses the anomalous effect and its present low-temperature limitation: NIST, “Quantum Transport Measurements”.
Discovery and historical milestone
Klaus von Klitzing discovered the integer quantum Hall effect in 1980. The discovery showed that a macroscopic electrical measurement could reveal exact quantum structure and led to the resistance constant that bears his name. He received the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the quantized Hall effect. The Nobel Prize’s background material places the discovery and award in this historical sequence: Nobel Prize Outreach background document.
The later study of fractional states extended the story from single-particle Landau-level quantization to strongly correlated many-body phases. That progression explains why the quantum Hall effect is important in two different communities: metrologists use robust integer plateaus as standards, while condensed-matter physicists use integer and fractional states to test theories of quantum matter.
What the quantum Hall effect does—and does not—tell you
It does tell you
- That a suitable two-dimensional electron system can have a quantized transverse resistance in a strong magnetic field.
- That Landau levels and their filling organize the observed plateaus.
- That the integer effect provides a resistance scale tied to fundamental constants.
- That fractional plateaus signal strong interactions rather than a simple collection of independent electrons.
- That material choice matters: graphene may permit less demanding operating conditions, while other systems remain necessary for established standards.
It does not tell you
- That any ordinary Hall sensor will display quantized plateaus.
- That a large magnetic field alone is sufficient without an appropriate two-dimensional material and controlled measurement environment.
- That every fractional state has identical properties or practical uses.
- That quantum anomalous Hall devices are already easy, room-temperature replacements for conventional standards.
- That quantum Hall resistance standards are consumer products; their primary role is specialized laboratory metrology.
Why plateaus are more useful than a single exact point
A conventional calibration based on one point can be sensitive to a small change in field, temperature or carrier density. A quantum Hall plateau is valuable because the resistance remains nearly unchanged over a finite range of operating conditions. The flat region gives a laboratory room to set the instrument, verify stability and repeat the comparison without requiring a perfectly tuned single value.
Best Value
The plateau is not an invitation to ignore experimental controls. The range has boundaries, and transitions between plateaus are not quantized flat regions. A standards laboratory therefore chooses a well-developed plateau, monitors the relevant conditions and includes measurement uncertainty and systematic corrections in its result.
Common misconceptions
“Quantum” means the resistance is random or imprecise
The opposite is closer to the truth for the integer effect. “Quantum” refers to discrete allowed states; a well-developed plateau is unusually reproducible and is used precisely because it supplies a defined resistance value.
Every Hall voltage is a quantum Hall measurement
No. The ordinary Hall effect is widespread and usually varies smoothly. Quantization requires a suitable two-dimensional system, strong magnetic field and conditions that resolve the Landau-level structure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fractional means the resistance is simply a fraction of an ordinary resistor
No. A fractional filling factor identifies a correlated quantum state. The fraction refers to the relationship between carrier density and magnetic flux, not to a resistor cut into a convenient fraction.
Zero-field quantization means a normal quantum Hall device needs no magnet
No. Zero-field quantization describes the related quantum anomalous Hall effect. Conventional quantum Hall measurements use an applied magnetic field.
Where the field is heading
Research is pursuing resistance standards that are easier to operate, especially through graphene and other materials that may sustain quantization under less demanding conditions. At the same time, fractional states remain important for understanding strongly correlated matter, and even-denominator states are studied for their possible non-Abelian statistics. Those possibilities are scientific research directions, not established consumer technologies.
The central achievement remains the same: a two-dimensional quantum system turns a continuously adjustable experiment into a staircase of exact resistance values. That bridge between microscopic quantum mechanics and a practical unit of electrical measurement is why the quantum Hall effect remains both a foundational physics result and a working part of modern metrology.
