Long-lived, human-made chemicals release chlorine and bromine high above Earth. Antarctic winter cold converts those elements into ozone-destroying forms, and returning spring sunlight activates rapid catalytic reactions. The hole usually expands from August, reaches its greatest extent between mid-September and early October, and then fades as the polar vortex breaks up.
What the “ozone hole” actually means
“Ozone hole” is a name for severe depletion, not total absence. NASA’s Ozone Watch identifies the Antarctic hole as the area where total-column ozone is 220 Dobson Units (DU) or less. A Dobson Unit describes the total amount of ozone in a vertical column of atmosphere above a location. The 220-DU threshold was chosen because values that low were not seen in Antarctic observations before 1979 and because aircraft measurements connected them with chlorine- and bromine-catalyzed ozone loss.

Ozone remains present inside the mapped region, but its concentration is far below normal stratospheric levels. Maps show the area enclosed by the 220-DU contour; they do not show the dimensions of a physical opening. That distinction matters when a report gives the hole’s “area.” The figure is the surface area inside that contour at a particular time or averaged over a stated date range.

How the Antarctic ozone hole forms
The process combines the long atmospheric lifetime of ozone-depleting substances with unusual Antarctic winter weather and the return of sunlight in spring.
1. Stable industrial chemicals reach the stratosphere
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances were used in refrigeration, foams, propellants and other applications. Many are chemically stable in the lower atmosphere, so they are not quickly washed out or destroyed. Atmospheric circulation carries them gradually upward into the stratosphere, the ozone-rich layer above the weather systems familiar at Earth’s surface.

2. Ultraviolet light releases chlorine and bromine
In the stratosphere, stronger ultraviolet radiation breaks apart these otherwise persistent molecules. That photochemical breakdown releases chlorine from CFCs and related compounds; bromine-bearing compounds provide another highly reactive halogen. At first, much of this chlorine and bromine is held in comparatively inactive “reservoir” forms rather than attacking ozone immediately.
3. Antarctic winter isolates and cools the air
During the dark Southern Hemisphere winter, a strong circulation called the polar vortex forms around Antarctica. It limits exchange with air at lower latitudes and allows the polar stratosphere to become exceptionally cold. The isolated, thin and dry air can reach temperatures at which polar stratospheric clouds form.

4. Cloud particles activate stored chlorine
Reactions on the surfaces of polar stratospheric cloud particles transform chlorine reservoir compounds into more reactive forms, including chlorine gas. The clouds therefore act as a chemical preparation stage: they do not themselves remove all the ozone, but they convert relatively inactive chlorine into material ready for rapid loss once sunlight returns.
5. Spring sunlight starts catalytic destruction
As the Sun rises higher over Antarctica in late winter and spring, ultraviolet light breaks active chlorine molecules apart. Chlorine then enters reaction cycles that destroy ozone and regenerate the reactive chlorine, allowing one chlorine atom to participate repeatedly rather than being consumed in a single event. Bromine adds to the process and can react with chlorine in especially efficient loss cycles. This catalytic chemistry is why a relatively small amount of halogen can remove a very large amount of ozone.
6. Warming ends the season
Spring warming weakens the polar vortex and ends the cold conditions that sustain polar stratospheric clouds. Ozone-poor air disperses, while air from surrounding latitudes mixes into the polar region. The mapped hole shrinks and the seasonal episode ends until the next winter prepares the chemistry again.
Why the hole forms over Antarctica
The Antarctic location results from a combination of geography, circulation and temperature, not from a uniquely large source of pollution at the South Pole. The winter polar vortex forms a particularly effective barrier around the continent, keeping the air cold and chemically isolated for months. Those conditions favor polar stratospheric clouds more reliably than in most other parts of the world.
The timing is also crucial. Winter darkness allows the stratosphere to cool and the cloud-surface reactions to proceed without the sunlight needed for the fastest ozone destruction. When sunlight returns in August and September, the prepared chlorine and bromine chemistry is switched on across a broad, isolated air mass. The Arctic can experience ozone loss, but its polar vortex is generally less stable and its winter stratosphere less consistently cold, so the same Antarctic-scale seasonal hole is unusual there.

Why the hole grows in spring
NASA’s Ozone Watch describes growth beginning around August, with the largest area and deepest depletion generally occurring from mid-September through early October. Two requirements overlap during this period:

- Sunlight has returned: ultraviolet light can photolyze active chlorine and drive catalytic ozone loss.
Later in spring, increasing sunlight also warms the stratosphere. The vortex weakens, cloud formation becomes less favorable, and mixing with ozone-rich air outside the vortex dilutes the depleted region. Thus sunlight first accelerates the loss and later contributes, through seasonal warming, to the breakup that ends it.
What determines the size in a particular year?
The annual hole is controlled by both long-term halogen loading and short-term atmospheric conditions. Colder Antarctic stratospheric temperatures generally produce a larger area and lower ozone values in the center. A warmer or unusually disturbed vortex can limit cloud formation and shorten the period of intense depletion.
Consequently, one unusually small or large hole does not by itself prove that the long-term chemical trend has reversed or accelerated. Declining chlorine and bromine loading improves the baseline, while temperature, vortex strength, spring timing and mixing can make individual seasons depart substantially from that trend.
How to read an annual report
Check four details before comparing two years:
- Whether “area” means the region inside the 220-DU contour.
- Whether the report gives a single-day maximum, a minimum ozone value or a seasonal average.
- The exact date or averaging window used.
- Antarctic stratospheric temperature and polar-vortex conditions during the measurement period.
Using different windows or switching between area and minimum ozone can make two reports appear contradictory when they are measuring different things.

Why ozone depletion matters at Earth’s surface
The stratospheric ozone layer absorbs much of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. When ozone is depleted, more ultraviolet radiation can reach the surface beneath the affected air mass. Increased exposure raises risks associated with ultraviolet damage, including skin cancer and cataracts, and can harm crops. The ozone hole is not the sole cause of any of these conditions; it is one factor that can increase exposure where and when depleted air affects a region.
The strongest Antarctic depletion occurs over and around the continent during Southern Hemisphere spring. Winds and seasonal circulation can transport ozone-poor air beyond the central vortex, but the size, location and surface impact vary with the year’s meteorological conditions.
Is the ozone hole getting better?
The long-term direction is improving, but recovery is gradual and uneven. The 1987 Montreal Protocol and its later amendments restricted production and use of ozone-depleting substances. Because CFCs and related compounds can persist for years to decades, atmospheric concentrations respond slowly even after emissions controls take effect.
Best Value
NASA’s 2025 reporting, citing Stephen Montzka of NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory, stated that levels of ozone-depleting substances in the Antarctic stratosphere had declined by about one-third from their peak around 2000, relative to pre-ozone-hole levels. NASA and NOAA said recovery remains on track later this century. That is a broad outlook rather than a single global deadline: recovery timing differs among regions and between the overall ozone layer and the Antarctic springtime hole.
Year-to-year weather can temporarily mask or exaggerate the chemical improvement. A cold vortex can still produce a large hole even while halogen levels decline, whereas a disturbed, warm season can look unusually mild. Long-term assessments therefore examine atmospheric chlorine and bromine, repeated ozone measurements and multi-year behavior rather than one annual map.
Common misconceptions
“There is no ozone over Antarctica.”
Ozone is depleted, not absent. The operational definition is a total-column value of 220 DU or less, not zero ozone.

It is a seasonal phenomenon. Antarctic winter prepares the chemistry, spring sunlight drives rapid loss, and warming plus mixing ends the episode.
“A small year means the problem is solved.”
A small season may reflect warmer temperatures, a weaker vortex or earlier mixing as well as lower halogen loading. It is encouraging, but it cannot establish the long-term recovery trend alone.
“The hole is caused by local Antarctic emissions.”
The key chlorine- and bromine-bearing substances originated largely from human uses around the world. Their long atmospheric lifetimes allow global transport to the stratosphere, where Antarctic conditions make the seasonal chemistry especially efficient.
Bottom line
The ozone hole is a recurring Antarctic springtime zone of extreme stratospheric ozone depletion. Long-lived human-made chemicals deliver chlorine and bromine to the stratosphere; winter cold and polar stratospheric clouds activate them; returning sunlight drives catalytic destruction; and spring warming breaks up the isolated vortex. International controls have lowered ozone-depleting substances by about one-third from their peak around 2000, putting recovery on a gradual path, while weather continues to determine how large each individual season appears.
